hi dev
how far are u settled now?
fill me in

Reservoir is still viable, even if there are latest software to enhance the job process, you still have to know the basics before you can use the software , or else nothing will make sense to you, when i was doing my national service , we used eclipse 2 for reservoir simulations then it was the in thing! now its obsolete!!, we have to spend time on the library to even comprehend what the software is all about before we were even allowed to touch the mouse.
you have to keep updating yourself in the latest software but the basic fundamentals have to be there first and its not something you can read overnight, you have to play with real projects and scenerios, all the same reservoir has to do with - DATA's

no more no less, without data you cant drill.

it has also evolve as other discipline ,like subsea, asset management, reliance engineer management, e.t.c

its easier to become a driller by working your way up as a roughneck but in reservoir you have to put years of university education incorporated with hands on practicals, so
that,s just my 2 cedis's,

How did the interview(consulate office ) go?
CareerRe: Subsea, Mud, Reservoir, Pipeline, Petroleum, Drilling Engineers & Supervisors Zone by okeyz(m): 7:51pm On Jun 20, 2011
@ Z-MURDA

OF Cos anybody can be a roughneck, its the lowest cadre in the drilling industry cos it requires little or no education just muscle to move and lift heavy load, that been said, i am talking based on the Nigeria context , where there is non -existent job let alone a rostabout job!!, if the job was available in nigeria we will not be screaming of local content, we are saying such jobs have been cornered by the powers that be , i know what i am talking about  cos i was in the same shoes with ibude some few years back searching for this elusive roustabout job which is difficult to come by, of cos from the address on your id u r resident in texas where roustabout jobs abound !! infact drilling companies there are having a hard time finding employees to mann their rigs let alone a roustabout job that is tasking.
But here Its a diffierent ball game everything is politicized ,its who you know that determines what u get, i know of guys that traveled out to get IADC well cap cert just to get a pass to the rig with their own money, which is not suppose to be so.

In an ideal situation a roustabout job should be a starting point for someone who is eager to work his way up the ladder in the drilling heriarchy, after some few months upgrade and move to the next level by doing some certain required exam for that position.
In my opinion, a GRADUATE , should not even vie for a roustabout job cos it is reserved for those that have less than minimum education required for such job but since the desired is not available, the available becomes the desired, which in this case is not even available---unless your father owns the company or is a senator.

thats just the way it is !!

@ibudes
personally i dont think i have a clue about getting such job in Nigeria, you can take a shot at the indigenous drilling coy and see if there can absorb u, it all still depends on if you know somebody there, well i dont want to dampen ur spirit, just talk to other professionals in the industry, who knows things might have changed for the better, if u are in port harcourt it will be a good idea to visit this drilling companies personally and show them what u can do or better still do a short course related to drilling , that can give u a start.

you are not far from the truth, 2-pac spoke vehemently against the US govt who are predominantly illuminati's and as such they have to silence him cos his music was becoming a tool for rebellion, they have even tried to win him over but he told them to bleep themselves since then, his ordeal began, the most painful part is that suge "idiot" knight betrayed him by masterminding his demise, his own producer!!!

just imagine don jazzy setting d'banj up, how would that look like to his teeming fans

@ ibude

its a good thing you are willing to start from the bottom , that has been the traditional way, but the real problem is that the rougneck jobs has been cornered by politicians who give these jobs out to their relations/friends,i know of somebody that read hotel management and is a rough neck for one local drilling company!!

The foreign coys are not willing to hire nigerians, they prefer to hire other nationals and bring them to work on nigerian waters, mostly fillipinos and indians, even the federal govt is not helping matters. the local content thing is a farce!!

well do not loose hope,

on the other hand, a friend of mine who recently relocated to alberta ,canada, got the same roughneck job without knowing anybody!! huh

he is even planning to take a 3 months course that will give him a drillers position and guess what? , he read botany !!

tales of two country , you  might say,

@
adec234:
2nd u can also go to marine time academy at VI as a graduate with cert in mech you don't  have to start as fresher because it has many stages of exams

it about 3 consecutive stage programme to study and also write the exams.  from their you learn workshop practical where you see little different between mech & marine because the workshop is what will put you in the marine field.

you can go their to make inquiry.

thats the only sure way of getting into the marine field in Nigeria

so give it a shot!!!

actually that is my own definition based on my own experience engaging in supply chain, be that as it may supply chain does not have a "one size fits all" definition , it can have different definition and interpretation based on the different industry , but the final goals and objectives is streamlined to given value to the end user and bringing profit to the stakeholders involved.
CareerRe: Petroleum Engineers - Bp, Total, Exxonmobil Or Chevron? by okeyz(m): 8:07pm On May 27, 2011
@ A-town and co
I found your arguments rather funny, from the look of things you both have just succeeded in confusing the guy some more,if i may say here that the four companies he mentioned are all equally good.

Schlum has been buying up a lot of companies lately and their profit margin looks good, of course they started as a contractor but they have really grown to be the prefered contractor for the "fat cats" oil giants, and also mind you that these oil giants where once consortium of different companies that merged together to form an alliance chevron/texaco/star. exxonmobil etc.

I will give my own experience, when i was doing my internship at Mobil we were regularly sent to schlum at idowu taylor for trainings, why , because , according to my supervisor then, schlumberger was the BEST! in terms of what we want to learn.

As for laying off, it happens in all companies, once there is duplication of duties or there is a new development in technology that will perform well what humans are doing then there is no need to have excess workers and that is what schlumberger is all about, INNOVATION!!!

@ server

if you want to enjoy job security stay with the majors, if you like mobility, hands on experience, professional advancement career-wise stick with the "so called" contractors.
come to think of it, a stint with schlum or halliburton or baker hughes will get u a job anywhere in the world, these coys have really paid their dues in terms of technological breakthrough in the oil and gas industry, this is not a mean feat

one more last thing, when i was doing my service with one of the indigenous oil and gas coy and we often go to the rig , we do nothing else than supervising, answering the name "company man" but those that do the nitty gritty are the contractors!!, they have the technology, the competence and the technical know how and that my friend is what counts in todays technology driven oil and gas industry, make ur choice

wink
CareerRe: How Should You Handle Working Under A Boss Who Is Younger Than U? by okeyz(m): 2:23pm On May 27, 2011
there is no problem in working under some one thats younger than you, if the person is knowledgable , has leadership qualities and most of all COMPETENT, you can share ideas and views about how to make the work place co-habitable for easy work flow

the worst scenerio is when you have to work under someone you know you are far more competent than, that is where the real problem is  angry
CareerRe: Logistics Or Supply Chain Management by okeyz(m): 5:46pm On May 26, 2011
@ abinibi,

I couldn't access the video but anyways ,

you will agree with me that for a thorough effective management of a supply chain , there have to be a network of entities and that can be made possible by information technology, collaboration between the stakeholders  and process owners to give         on- time delivery of products and services.

I just chipped in that first definition, i want the discussion to digress further before i chipp in what i supply chain really is in this present competitive world, meanwhile how are you enjoying your new status?,  smiley

Greatpeter:
I have returned those items back to the store and I've not been able to identify the culprit but there is suspect.

I have directed their case to their immediate boss.

He will give his findings and verdict tomorrow.

I directed him to handle it and then feed me back.
Great peter, in management ,sometimes you have to apply the ferrule , if you understand what i mean, these guys are criminals they r just testing you,u caught them the first time ,they begged and pleaded and u let it go,and they did the same thing again bigger than the first and again u let it go, worse still u returned the items back to the store.
This is theft!!, you should not have RETURNED BACK those items,it makes u an accomplice since u already have knowledge that those items are stolen!!

those guys are testing you to see what will happen,do not be surprised that they will still do the same thing again but on a bigger scale or worse still get you implicated!!
like someone rightly says here cover your ass!!.your position is at stake here, you never know someone is trying to use this plot to unsit you!!

Look at it this way, your dept oversees what happen in the catering dept and a theft is been carried out and u r aware(the final authority) and what happenshuh, NOTHING!! and why? because u don't like sacking pple, (emotions involved)
Your silence has given them a signal to hatch a bigger plot, u can bet your lunch that their boss is behind this or is even aware of it and approves it.

theft in a company is not something that senior management treats with kid gloves ,no matter who is involved.

CareerRe: Pls Help, Msc Process Engr Or Geophysics by okeyz(m): 11:06am On May 09, 2011
@  valacious,

your query is very typical of most petroleum engineering graduates who have found themselves in the banking system which is no fault of theirs, but if i should add my 2 cents, going for a degree in geology or geophysics now will really limit your options,

However going for a masters degree in Pet Eng in the States or Canada is not a bad idea but its quite cost intensive.

But, u can try other countries like Europe, they are schools that have free education, Germany, Netherlands, Norway ,turkey,to name a few and the quality is just as the same with the states or Canada.

As some one  pointed out here u really need to do a research in what you want in you career, from your post it seems you are trying to take whatever course you feel is the in road to the oil and gas company, just to let you know u can get into the oil and gas industry as a Driver !,  but u need a strategy.

i will just give u some few tips
there is SAIT in Canada(ALBERTA)  their petroleum engineering courses are one the best globally
also there is NAIT too there fees would be btw the ranges of 15,000 to 20,000 Canadian dollars and u get to work while schooling too,

there is one university in Nova Scotia too, fairly cheap but they require Toefl .
u can browse for universities offering petroleum engineering at masters level in Germany , Bulgaria, Egypt, turkey, which are affordable besides as a petroleum engineering graduate u can work in the oil and gas industry as a completions man, well planner, well intervention specialist, driller, assistant driller, waste management specialist, well tester, reservoir engineer, rig supervisor even as a drilling representative , the opportunities are endless,

just sit down and do a qualitative research in what you want out of your career, go to career websites of oil companies and check out what skills are needed in most positions it will give u an overview of what u might need to start off, u can also join some professional online forum related to the oil and gas, i am sure u will get some helpful tips from experienced professional there

Do not give up, Good luck

Very interesting topic. cheesy I for one studied Biochemistry, but im beginning to feel that chemists are not really required in the oil and gas sector. I have done a Shell Accredited training in HSE levels one and two but most vacancies require about 2 years experience in dat field. Presently I work in a construction firm but I would like to ask and your seek advice.

1. Are chemists relevant in the oil sector?

2. Wat other relevant training apart from Hse can a chemist do? I know there r probably some departments that r not too popular?

Anyone Helphuh!!! undecided undecided huh

since you are already in construction industry, you take a shot at project management,it will lead you straight to major E & P projects.
