A former Governor of Plateau State , Senator Joshua Dariye , continues to receive the N 750 , 000 salary and N 13 . 5 m monthly running cost from the National Assembly , 11 months after his conviction by a Federal Capital Territory High Court, SUNDAY PUNCH can report . This implies that his total earnings have risen from N 85 . 5m in November last year to N 171 .1 m in May . The sum is separate from a severance package he is supposed to receive as an outgoing member of the National Assembly . The payment to the account of the convicted lawmaker has continued despite a lawsuit filed by the Socio -Economic Rights and Accountability Project before a Federal High Court in Lagos to “ stop the Senate President Bukola Saraki from paying former Plateau State governor , Senator Joshua Dariye , N 14 .2 million monthly allowances while he serves out a 10 -year prison sentence for corruption because such payment violates Nigerian law and international obligations. ” Investigations by SUNDAY PUNCH showed that Dariye , who represents Plateau Central Senatorial District , still received the allowances because his seat had yet to be declared vacant by the leadership of the National Assembly . The senator , who served as governor of Plateau from 1999 to 2007 , was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and convicted by Justice Adebukola Banjoko of a FCT High Court for embezzling N 1 .162 bn . He was subsequently sentenced to 14 years in prison , but his sentence was reduced to 10 years by the Court of Appeal which upheld his conviction last month . The Director of Information at the National Assembly , Mr Agada Rawlings , in an interview with our correspondent, explained that constitutionally , Dariye could not be denied the payments . Rawlings said , “ The point there is that his seat has not been declared vacant. You ’re looking at the moral side of it but we are looking at the constitutional side . There are two issues that are at stake. Dariye , as of today, is still a senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria . He has not been recalled . “ Secondly , INEC has not declared his seat vacant. As the management of the National Assembly , we do not have such powers to do anything otherwise until the law speaks otherwise. “ So, it ’s not for us as the management to decide who stays and who does not stay. The law on that is clear . The only constitutional provision to declare a seat vacant is on the basis of recall or death of a member . ” He noted that some courts had given judgment , saying , even upon suspension by the rules of the house , if certain procedures were not met, such actions were deemed to be void. “ But in this particular instance , there is a moral burden , but if there is no law that states that he has been barred as a result of the judgement and the court in this judgement did not say his position at the Senate of the Federal Republic ( had ) lapsed, ” Rawlings added . Albania manhunt after gang target plane in '€10m heist' The Austrian Airlines plane was held up as it was preparing to leave for Vienna A suspected gang leader was shot dead after a dramatic raid on an Austrian airlines plane on the runway at Tirana airport in Albania. Passengers waiting for the Airbus plane to leave Mother Teresa airport near the capital saw the gang approach security police wielding AK-47 rifles. They are then thought to have entered the plane to steal as much as €10m (£8.5m; $11m) in cash. The gang fled but then ran into a police patrol and opened fire. What happened at the airport? Albanian media showed footage of a white van carrying tax agency signs being driven inside the airport fence before the robbery at around 15:00 on Tuesday. It had apparently burst on to the site through a gate used by emergency services. It is thought the masked gang had inside knowledge of the cash cargo that had been loaded on to the plane ahead of its flight to Vienna. As Albania's central bank does not accept deposits of hard currency, some locally based foreign banks have to ship foreign currency to Austria by plane. The airport has been targeted by robbers before. The gang held up the guards and forced open the plane's cargo doors before loading their vehicle with most of the cash on the plane. The robbery lasted three or four minutes, reports said. They then drove away in the van but were confronted by police a short distance away. They opened fire and, when the patrol fired back, one of the three robbers was shot in the head. Albanian reports say the dead man was later identified by his family as Admir Murataj. Deputy Prime Minister Erion Brace praised the police, saying they had "eliminated the leader" and were pursuing the rest of the gang, saying all the robbers had been identified. The deputy prime minister described the gang as one of Albania's most dangerous The robbers' van was later found burned out and one witness told Albanian TV that they had escaped by bicycle. As news of the robbery emerged, banking officials said they may have to stop transfers of cash to Vienna. Organised crime gangs have been behind previous raids on cash transfers to Vienna. Almost €1m was stolen in a raid in 2016 not far from the airport. Then in February 2017 thieves stole €3.2m ($3.6m; £2.7m). Police later found some of the money stashed underground in pressure cooker. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-47879438 |
Hedonisst:And pray, what is he doing o. ![]() |
Jowanson:He doesn't need 25% of votes from the southeast. What he needs is THE MAJORITY OF votes cast and AT LEAST 25% OF VOTES IN 24 STATES. |
may320:You are welcome bro.Let the best candidate win. I have done my civic duty;cast my vote. May Nigeria prosper under whichever candidate win. |
may320:I don't need to convince anyone.I simply stated my opinion. You saw my post and quoted me.So I thought you were interested in having a healthy conversation. And of course listening to an opinion that differs from yours.Apparently,I am wrong. |
may320:Look here my bro,I am not a political fanatic. If I don't know about something,I don't comment.Osun is something I know about. In the last gubernatorial election,if Adeleke wasn't from Ede,believe me,it wouldn't have been close at all.Oyetola would have swept the poll.ln most of the major towns Aregbe is well liked if not loved. The only exception is Ile-Ife,because of the Omisore factor |
may320:Are you actually in Osun,or you just follow all the noise in the media?I am from Eden, and believe me, Aregbe tried in Osun. How many states didn't owe salaries? There were states that owed more than osun(eg. Plateau). It was just politics that led to osun making the news then.I move between Ede and Ibadan,so I know what I am talking about. |
may320:I actually thought Pdp would win Osun because historically, whichever party that wins Ede, usually wins the state. And because of the perceived injustice towards the Adeleke family, pdp will surely win there. |
This is very funny. Now am waiting for Fani Kayode to come and confirm this story like he did that of Jubril from Sudan. |
FarahAideed:You are the bigger dullard here. |
Worst enemy?!So the government should exempt his company from paying tax? |

I was given an SRT 4950 by a friend who had abandoned it for a long time. The problem now is that it frequently trips off. And at times, when it is on,the signal always fluctuates.I gave it to an electronics repairer but he couldn't find the problem. Please masters in the house what can I do to get it back in good working order. |
