PoliticsBREAKING: Prophet T.B. Joshua Is Dead by olatade(op): 12:53am On Jun 06, 2021
Temitope Balogun Joshua, a frontline Nigerian preacher and televangelist, has died, family sources told Peoples Gazette.

Mr Joshua, the founder of The Synagogue, Church Of All Nations (SCOAN), died in Lagos on Saturday evening shortly after concluding a programme at his church, The Gazette learnt from family sources who did not want to be quoted as an official statement was still being prepared, said. He was 57.

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed to The Gazette, but family sources said his remains had been deposited at the morgue and an autopsy would be performed forthwith.

Mr Joshua reigned for several decades as a fiery preacher on television, using his platform to attract a large number of Christians from across the world.

In 2014, his church was at the centre of a multi-national investigation following a section of his church headquarters in Lagos collapsed, leaving dozens killed and many more injured.

Mr Joshua denied allegations of negligence and a trial over the incident was still underway prior to his demise.

PoliticsBreaking News - Facebook Suspends Trump For Two Years by olatade(op): 6:05pm On Jun 04, 2021
The company said it wanted a suspension 'long enough to allow a safe period of time after the acts of incitement' as well as to act as a deterrent
Suspension starts from Jan. 7, 2021
That means it will remain through the 2022 off-year elections where Trump is seeking to play a significant role
It referenced 'acts of incitement' in reference to his comments on the platform around the time of the January 6th Capitol riot
The blow comes after it was revealed Trump was taking down his own 'From the Desk of Donald J. Trump' web site after reports of slow traffic
Details of suspension come as Trump continues to say the election was 'stolen'
Facebook announced Friday that it would maintain its suspension of former President Donald Trump's participation in the social media site for an additional two years – until January 2023.

The company responded in a statement after its oversight board announced Trump's suspension from Facebook and Instagram, but without providing an end date.

It cited the 'gravity' of the conduct that got him bumped in the first place, after flagging his repeated claims of election fraud and other issues. The statement also referenced 'acts of incitement' in reference to his comments around the time of the January 6th Capitol riot, when Congress met to certify the electoral votes.

Given the gravity of the circumstances that led to Mr. Trump’s suspension, we believe his actions constituted a severe violation of our rules which merit the highest penalty available under the new enforcement protocols,' according to the statement, authored by Vice President of Global Affairs Nick Clegg.

'We are suspending his accounts for two years, effective from the date of the initial suspension on January 7 this year,' the company said.

That means the suspension will remain through the 2022 off-year elections where Trump is seeking to play a significant role

We are today announcing new enforcement protocols to be applied in exceptional cases such as this, and we are confirming the time-bound penalty consistent with those protocols which we are applying to Mr. Trump’s accounts.

But the company warned: 'When the suspension is eventually lifted, there will be a strict set of rapidly escalating sanctions that will be triggered if Mr. Trump commits further violations in future, up to and including permanent removal of his pages and accounts.'

'In establishing the two year sanction for severe violations, we considered the need for it to be long enough to allow a safe period of time after the acts of incitement, to be significant enough to be a deterrent to Mr. Trump and others from committing such severe violations in future, and to be proportionate to the gravity of the violation itself,' the company said.

The blow comes after it was revealed Trump was taking down his own 'From the Desk of Donald J. Trump' web site after just 29 days following reports of slow traffic.

The Facebook ban drew howls of protest from Trump and GOP allies who railed against 'Big Tech' and its ability to use its sway to try to keep public figures from using the platform.

But the company spelled out what it viewed as a 'serious risk to public safety' if Trump were allowed back on.

'We will evaluate external factors, including instances of violence, restrictions on peaceful assembly and other markers of civil unrest. If we determine that there is still a serious risk to public safety, we will extend the restriction for a set period of time and continue to re-evaluate until that risk has receded.'

The announcement comes during a week when the New York Times reported Trump expects to be reinstated to the White House later this summer, following the conclusion of 'audits,' such as one ordered by the Republican Senate in Arizona. That is one of the states where Trump claims election fraud, although the state certified President Joe Biden as the winner and Congress counted the votes for Biden.

BusinessBanks Now Charge N6.98 USSD Fee by olatade(op): 11:17am On Jun 04, 2021
Commercial banks and mobile network providers have started charging customers a flat rate of N6.98 per transaction every time they use the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) service.

The new charge followed the announcement made in March by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC)

“Effective March 16, 2021, USSD services for financial transactions conducted at DMBs (Deposit Money Banks) and all CBN-licensed institutions will be charged at a flat fee of N6.98 per transaction,” CBN and NCC spokesman Osita Nwanisobi and Ikechukwu Adinde had said in the statement.

The charges were part of the agreement reached when banks and telecommunication operators discussed the N42 billion debt with the apex bank and the NCC after network providers threatened to withdraw the service from banks as the accumulated debt remained unpaid.

In the statement, both the CBN and NCC assured that it would collect the new USSD charge on behalf of network providers directly from customers’ bank accounts and would not impose any extra charges on customers to use the USSD service. Both bodies noted the new payment arrangement would be cheaper for customers to enhance financial inclusion.

Nigerians have taken to social media to comment on the news USSD fee.

Omo, I wanted to recharge yesterday with USSD, I saw that they want to charge me N6 for airtime of N200. I cancelled it and resolve to buying paper card.
