PoliticsPHOTOS: Gov. Obiano Drives Tractor As He Flag Off 2016 Farming Season by olokfor(op): 8:39am On Jun 23, 2016
The governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has declared that two years of result-driven investment in agriculture by his administration has turned up impressive results that have restored the pride of his people.

Speaking at the flag off of the 2016 Farming Season in Umunze on Wednesday, Governor Obiano recalled that “two years ago, when we lit the fire of agricultural revolution in Anambra State, we had nothing but our dreams. Today, standing before you on this podium, I am proud to declare that Anambra State has become the first state in Nigeria to export farm produce to Europe.”

Enumerating the achievements of his administration in agriculture in the past two farming seasons, Obiano pointed out that the state now has large industrial farms that have pushed up its rice production to 190,000 metric tons, leading to the creation of thousands of jobs and had finally capped the achievements up with the production of wheat in commercial quantity.

“We are making steady progress that will eventually drive home the point that Agriculture is the neglected corner stone of the Nigerian economy. We are extracting values to justify our decision to make agriculture the number one pillar of my Economic Blueprint. Indeed, from May 15, 2014 when we made the call to arms in agriculture, we have given Ndi Anambra another reason to be proud of their beloved state,” he declared.

Pointing out that the state had attracted $1.011 worth of investments from seven firms to agriculture alone, Governor Obiano commended Ndi Anambra for heeding his call to invest in agriculture, singling out Stine Industries Limited for a special praise for winning the Best Rice in Africa award at the recent African Products Forum in Lagos and dusting competing rice brands from South Africa, Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Namibia and Cameroun. “That is the Spirit of Anambra! That is change at its best. That also is a fulfilment of one of the basic expectations of leadership – to shine the light so that the people will see the way,” he explained.

According to him, the state government had empowered about 50,000 farmers through cooperatives, approved over N120m worth of business plans and linked 3000 cooperatives to institutions offering credit facilities.

“This farming Season, we shall raise the bar of performance. The Anambra Small Business Agency (ASBA) will today pave the path to a brighter future for 15,000 people through the disbursement of the N1billion in its SME Retail Lending Programme. The sum is part of the N2bn Micro Small and Medium Enterprise Development Fund that my administration has accessed from the Central Bank of Nigeria,” Governor Obiano further declared, pointing out that 800 direct jobs and 5000 indirect jobs were created through the scheme during the last farming season.

Narrating the plans of his administration for the new farming season, the governor explained that his administration had set up a Monitoring and Control Centre to capture and build up a data bank on all famers in the state to avoid identity duplication and ghost farmers.

He also revealed that plans are underway to set up an Agro Library that would archive important data like the history of land ownership and boundary information in order to check the incidence of land disputes that might stall progress in the state.

Also speaking, the MD/CEO of Anambra Small Business Association (ASBA), Mr. Clement Chukwuka revealed that of the N1bn disbursed the agency last year, 45% went to manufacturing and 35% went to agriculture while 12% and 10% went to trade and commerce and services respectively.

According to him, “it is gratifying to note that our N1bn SME facilities granted to beneficiaries since last year has almost zero default rate as no obligor has defaulted in their monthly interest payment obligations.”

Mr. Chukwuka also revealed that ASBA would commence the second phase of the micro credit scheme as it had concluded modalities to ensure that the 250 youths that underwent training at the Agricultural Training School in Mgbakwu and their counterparts who graduated from the Technology Incubation Centre in Nnewi would be given seed monies to start up their own businesses.

In his own remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Afam Mbanefo revealed that the state had developed a world class Farmers Information management System (FIMS) that would enable it practice smart farming.

“We have the information and data to guide and manage our farmers as well as interested investment. We have the traceability functionality, we have the required transparency. We therefore request our farmers to approach the control center desk here or visit our office to register for free and be provided with Farmer ID and Cooporative ID,” he declared.

Also, in an obvious response to the challenge posed by the growing menace of Fulani cattle herders, Hon. Mbanefo revealed that his ministry was developing plans to sustain clean meat policy in partnership with the Anambra state butchers association, one of which is to develop Ramp for rearing of EFI Igbo & Ewi Igbo with a keen interest in also promoting the good old Okuko Igbo.

He expressed confident that the development would bring back the Igbo traditional livestock heritage and introduce a market that would attract billions of Naira into the Anambra state business strata.

PoliticsI Know Nothing About Alleged Forgery - Saraki by olokfor(op): 8:05pm On Jun 22, 2016
Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, today (Wednesday) maintains he knows nothing about how the rules adopted in the inauguration of the Eighth Senate on June 9, 2015 was formulated.

He said the on-going efforts to drag him into a case of forgery before the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, was just another phase in the orchestrated persecution he has faced since he emerged as Senate President a little over a year ago.

Saraki, in a statement by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, stated that he was not a part of the leadership of the 7th Senate that made the rules in question and prior to his unanimous election as Senate President on June 9, 2015, he was merely a Senator-elect like all his colleagues, and therefore was not in a position to influence the rules that were to be used in the conduct of the election.

“The Police in their investigation were conscious that the incumbent Senate President was not in office prior to June 9, 2015 and that was why in their letters inviting some individuals for their investigation, they only mentioned officers of the 7th Senate. The last of the letters was written to the Clerk of the National Assembly on June 7, 2016 and he was not among those invited.

“Those who decided to smuggle the name of the Senate President into the charge sheet after the fact knew perfectly well that only the leadership of the 7th Senate were invited for investigation. But they needed to implicate him in keeping with their declared vow to ensure that even if their current efforts to nail him through the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) fails, they would find other ways to carry out their vendetta.

“This so-called forgery case is another wanton abuse of the judicial process and making a mockery of the institution of justice. As the Senate earlier stated, the sponsors of this plot are not only gunning for Dr. Saraki, what they have just launched with this latest antics is a grand onslaught on the foremost institution of our democracy. The only institutional difference between dictatorship and democracy is the presence of the legislature. Therefore, by seeking to cripple the National Assembly, they have declared a war on our hard-won democracy and aimed for the very jugular of our freedom.

“Let us restate the fact that the Senators who initiated the Police investigation in the first place had raised the same matter on the floor and were overwhelmingly overruled. They also filed a civil suit and were told by the court that neither the judiciary nor the executive can interfere in the internal affairs of the legislative arm.

“The Senate President recognizes the sundry problems bedeviling our nation today – food insecurity, devaluation of the Naira, inflation, unemployment, failing national infrastructure, insurgency in the North-eastern part of the country, restiveness in the oil producing areas, and general insecurity, among others – and believes that finding solutions to them should be the priority, at this period, for every individual in government, not the pursuit of narrow political objectives. That is why these needless distractions will do nobody any good. In fact, it will not help in delivering on the promise of bringing positive change to the lives of our people who voted for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last elections.

“The Senate President does not see what value this current attempt to shut down the Senate by dragging its presiding officers before a court for a phantom allegation of forgery will add to the attempts to solve the problems confronting the nation.

“Dr. Saraki will however explore all legal options necessary to ward off this fresh case of persecution and distraction”, the statement added.

Signed

Politics'I Can’t Even Have Sex’- Another Accused Nigerian Lawmaker, samuel Okon Writes US by olokfor(op): 6:20pm On Jun 22, 2016
Member of Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives, Hon. Samuel Ikon, who was among the three lawmakers alleged to have illegally sought sexual favours while in the United States, has written a letter to the country’s ambassador in Nigeria, James Entwistle, in a bid to clear his name and state his case.

His full letter reads:

It is with a deep sense of sadness and great hurt that I write to respond to a letter dated June 9, 2016 addressed to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, copied to me and signed by you, alleging that I, Hon. Samuel Ikon, with Hon. Mark Gbillah requested hotel parking attendants assist us solicit prostitutes.

Let me state unequivocally sir that this allegation is not just false, but in bad taste. I Hon. Samuel Ikon never on that trip, nor on any trip to the US or anywhere in this world, ever sought to consort with prostitutes. This act would not only be inimical to my health, but totally unacceptable to my faith.

May I draw your attention Mr. Ambassador to the fact that I almost did not make that trip due to my state of health, a situation that was well known to your mission accompanying staff Mrs. Victoria Ibi. Even at the airport before our departure, I still was not sure but travelled due to the deep respect and appreciation I had at the time for the US government nominating me for the program on one hand, and the fact that I carried necessary medication for the Malaria and Typhoid that I was diagnosed of.

Mr. Ambassador, I was miserable throughout our stay in Washington DC and only got a bit stable in Cleveland when the medication began to kick in. Secondly, I was at the same time on medication to reduce my PSA level which tests in February this year had indicated a disturbing increase thus the issue of sex was totally ruled out for me in view of my health (laboratory results available if needed). I therefore find it funny and unacceptable to be so linked as in your letter.

I have another proof of my innocence which wiII completely tear down this false conclusion but will leave it out for a later time should you fail to redeem my integrity and I am forced to take legal action.

I wish to categorically state that at no time did I either alone, or in the company of Hon. Mark Gbillah a gentlemen with impeccable moral standing, approach any parking lot staff or any hotel staff for that matter to assist me solicit for prostitutes. It never happened nor was ever intended or thought of.

I have been in the legislature in the past nine (9) years and has attended over 30 conferences, seminars and meetings in about 20 countries globally and has never sought for a prostitute in any of these countries including the USA. I was in New York for a UN hearing on Narcotics in February for 4 days and never sought for a prostitute. My impeccable record of accomplishment is there to be seen. I have done programs in Harvard and Stanford Universities in the US and completed them successful without an incident or request for prostitutes.

I am an Elder in my Church since 2006 and clearly knows the tenets and doctrines of my faith one of which abhors such desires for prostitutes as such very offensive to be so linked.

His Excellency sir, let me inform you that I am happily married to a woman who is a mother, friend and confidant to me for twenty (20) years now and I have no reason to seek comfort in the bosom of a prostitute with all the attendant health risks especially the latest known as Zika Virus which has entered the USA.

Mr Ambassador, I therefore find this false allegation condemnable, repugnant and totally unacceptable to me.

Most distressing is the statement in your letter that your mission took pains to confirm this allegation and my identity. How sad. How can you confirm it to be my identity when I never had such an encounter with any hotel staff.

Moreover, how did you come to such conclusion without any fair hearing as you never sought my own view or account. Not driving a car myself, what would I be doing at the parking lot area, to then meet a staff there for such discussions?

May I draw your Excellency’s attention to how he would feel or react if after a meeting, say in the state department in Washington DC, he returns to Abuja only to receive a letter two months later that he sought to consort with prostitutes whilst in DC, an allegation His Excellency knows is false because he never did such . That’s exactly how I feel now.

(I) I never sought anyone’s help to get prostitutes .

(2) I never had need for prostitutes.

(3) My health situation especially at the time could not have allowed such desires.

(4) My faith abhors such desires.

(5) I have never desired a prostitute.

I wish to draw your attention to the fact that it was myself and Hon. Mark Gbillah that sought to travel with our wives but your mission advised against it yet my reason for wanting to travel with my wife was because of my health condition at the time of the trip.

His Excellency sir, kindly note that I attended every session of the program from day 1 to the last, missing only a lunch date due to my medication time.

Worthy to note is the fact that there was a basketball match that period and the hotel had a lot of guests as such this may be a case of mistaken identity. I couldn’t even attend the game due to my state of health as my body couldn’t stand the chill weather for long.

I therefore urge that you review this case within 7 days taking a more detailed look at the evidences available for such like video recordings especially audio showing time and date of such discussions. So you can realize that a mistake has been made here and my integrity restored, else I will be seeking legal redress in competent courts of law both in Nigeria and in the US.

I am alive and not dead. I am sane and capable of knowing what I did, said and who I met. As such cannot accept this false allegation by your mission on my person and reputation built over the years.

Mr. Ambassador sir, United States is held in high esteem for its providing platforms for liberties and the rule of law. It’s my hope that these beliefs will not fade in my sight due to this great injustice.

On the issue of revocation of Visas, I wish to state that until my name is cleared and apologies tendered , I have no intention to visit a country where I can be so easily accused and adjudged so, without any fair hearing as such you need not worry.

Your Excellency, I am confident that you will take steps to address my response to your letter as it will be most unfair to taint my reputation, carrier and psych by o false and untrue allegation.

It is sad that this false allegation has gone to the press and now in the public domain further tarnishing my image and reputation. I hope you will address this aspect properly when the issue is fully resolved.

While awaiting your action in this regard, be assured of my highest regards.

Yours faithfully,

Rt. Hon. Samuel Ikon

The Kwara State Community Health Insurance Scheme (KWCHIS) on Thursday, 9 June won the 2016 Financial Times/IFC Transformational Business Award.

KWCHIS beat GSK UK, Etisalat UAE, Living Goods USA, and Sustainable Health USA to win the “Achievement in Sustainable Development: Maternal and Infant Health” category of the awards.

The award event, which was held at the Hilton Hotel, Bankside in London had in attendance the Director General of the Kwara State Hospital Management Board, Mrs. Bunmi Jetawo Winter and the Executive Secretary of KWCHIS, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Abdulsalam.

Kwara Health Insurance Programme was selected for the prestigious business award after a rigorous review of different programmes from across the world that have had transformational impact on people.

The Financial Times award is a remarkable testimony of the impact of the health scheme on the people of Kwara State as well as a motivation for the efforts of the state government towards finding a long-term financing solution for the programme.

Meanwhile, Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed in a statement on Friday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Dr. Muyideen Akorede, said that he was pleased to hear that the Kwara State CHIS has again received international endorsement.

The governor noted that the recognition has added impetus to the state government’s efforts in expanding rural access to affordable healthcare delivery, stressing that his government will continue to prioritize the wellbeing of the people by initiating policies and programmes that will increase efficiency and effectiveness in the healthcare system of the State.

Governor Ahmed also thanked Kwara’s partners in the scheme, the Dutch Government, PharmAccess Foundation and Hygeia Community Health for supporting the scheme since it was launched. The scheme allows beneficiaries to have access to quality health care all year round, for a token of N500.

It will be recalled that the health insurance scheme in 2014 in Paris won a finalist prize at the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Development Assistance Committee awards for development initiative.

The scheme had also received commendation from the United Nations and Bill Gates Foundation for its creative approach to pro-poor health care.

PoliticsArmy Releases Names Of Senior Officials To Be Sacked by olokfor(op): 9:50am On Jun 12, 2016

According to the list, ADCs to former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and Goodluck Jonathan are among the 58 military officers retired by the Nigerian army in its latest exercise.

They were given compulsory retirement over two allegations, according to the army: partisanship and corruption.

Ojogbane Adegbe, a colonel and former ADC to Jonathan, and Mustapha Onoiveta, former ADC to Yar’Adua, were both retired.

Nicholas Achinze, a colonel and former military assistant to Owoye Azazi, a retired general, and Sambo Dasuki, a retired colonel, was also retired.
