Nigerian politics is synonymous with drama and controversy. When politicians are not begging for votes, they are engaging in street brawls or making the electorate miserable. See list of the 5 most controversial Governors in the Office: Ayo Fayose : Governor of Ekiti state, he is renowned for his theatrics. He's popularly referred to as 'The People's Governor' because of the massive support he enjoys in his state. No news day is complete without a scathing statement from Fayose. Nyesom Wike Governor of Rivers state. Though he's yet to engage in a street brawl , most Nigerians readily associate him with hooliganism. He's currently engaged in a fierce battle with his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi. Nasir El-Rufai Governor of Kaduna state. Mallam El-Rufai is an elitist whose policies are causing groaning in his state. He recently placed a sanction on religious activities in his state. He is also currently carrying out major demolition projects across the state. Adams Oshiomhole Governor of Edo state. He is the self appointed auditor of the Nigerian treasury and never fails to thrill Nigerians with his outbursts of how 'trillions' were looted. Critics claim Oshiomhole is trying to secure his next job by being as loud possible considering his tenure as Governor ends this year. Rauf Aregbesola Governor of Osun state. Argebesola is the former poster boy of his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC and currently a neglected 'bride'. The Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT on Wednesday in Lagos said it had arrested an impersonator and 11 suspects for allegedly attempting to stow away in a vessel to Europe. The Commanding Officer NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Abraham Adaji, made the disclosure when he addressed journalists at Apapa, Lagos. He gave the names of the suspects as Akinwunmi Jeflando, Pope Olu, Jacob James, Samuel Jodge, Ade Samadin, Dan Gogo, James Akinbami, Paul Oguns, Joseph Emmanuel, Stephen Cooper and Jalo Cooper. Adaji said: "Preliminary investigations revealed that the arrested persons boarded the vessel, CITRON, through the rudder trunk access manhole in a bid to travel with the vessel to Europe. "The suspects were arrested at about 12. 30 a.m. on March 11 for illegally boarding Merchant Vessel CITRON berthed at Capital Oil Jetty, Apapa, Lagos. "They were detected and subsequently arrested by our patrol boat,’’ Adaji said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adaji handed over the suspects to the Nigeria Immigration Service for further investigation and prosecution. He also said that the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice-Adm. Ikot Ibas, had zero tolerance for all maritime crimes in Nigeria’s waters. He called on criminally-minded Nigerians and other nationals to seek legitimate employment instead of engaging themselves in illegal activities. One of the stowaways, Olu said he was not happy with his standard of living which prompted him to attempt to enter Europe illegally. Another stowaway, Cooper, blamed frustration for his attempt to travel abroad through illegal means. A representative of the NIS, Mr Lekan Olagunju, a Chief Superintendent, received the stowaways from the Navy. He said that investigations would continue with a view to ascertaining the claims of their nationalities before they could be prosecuted. In another development, the Navy also arrested one Mohammed Abubakar, for allegedly impersonating a Seaman Writer in the Nigerian Navy. While being handed over to the Nigeria Police, Adaji said he was arrested in Lagos. "The police will further conduct investigations on the suspect,’’ he said. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/nigerian-navy-arrests-11-for-attempting.html cc: lalasticlala |
The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) on Saturday urged President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on Gov. Rauf Aregbesola of Osun to rescind his plans to dismiss 1,083 workers of Ladoke Akintola Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH), Osogbo. Mr Afolabi Abiodun, the Chairman of JOHESU in Osun, made the appeal while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo. He alleged that the plans to sack the workers had reached an advanced stage, while the yet-to-be-delivered termination letters of the workers had already been written by the hospital’s management board, on the order of the state governor. Abiodun stressed that at this juncture, only Buhari’s intervention could save the situation and prevent the planned workers’ sack. He said that the governor had already taken a position on the audit report carried out on the hospital, which recommended that 1,083 workers, out of the 2,047 workforce of the hospital, should be laid off. He said that the governor jettisoned all other recommendations of the audit report but decided to stick to the recommendation on downsizing the workforce. Abiodun said that in reaction to the government’s plans, a peaceful protest was staged within the hospital premises on Wednesday. He warned that if the ``downsized’’ workers were eventually served with the termination letters, all the workers would go on strike. Meanwhile, the state government has debunked the claims regarding the purported plans to sack bona fide workers of LAUTECH. One of the governor’s aides, Mr Semiu Okanlawon, the Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, told NAN that only workers who were recruited into the hospital without the mandatory government’s approval would be affected by the exercise. He stressed that the state government was not interested in the sack of any of its worker. ``Government is not interested in the sack of any of its employee but rather its interest has always been how to get more people employed in the state via its job creation policy. ``But having said that, if there are any noticeable irregularities in the recruitment exercise of any government agencies, that does not mean such thing will be overlooked,’’ he said. Okanlawon said that the report of a forensic examination carried out in LAUTECH revealed that there had been irregular recruitment in the hospital since 2012. ``It is just unfortunate for anyone to lose his job but all the same, government cannot overlook any perceptible irregularity in the process of recruitment,’’ he added http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/governor-aregbesola-set-to-sack-1083.html cc: lalasticlala |
A Lagos-bound Air Peace plane on Saturday made an air return some minutes after taking off from the Port Harcourt International Airport, according to an official. Mr Sam Adurogboye, the General Manager, Public Relations, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the incident in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos. Adurogboye said an alarm was raised about fire in the cabin which forced the pilot to make the air return. ``The flight crew did the right thing by returning to base to check the situation,’’ he said. The NCAA spokesman, however, said the aircraft did not crash land, adding that there was no panic as the pilot properly briefed the passengers before landing safely. ``Air return is a precautionary flight safety procedure that must be adopted in the event of a snag. ``The pilot acted according to Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs),’’ Adurogboye said. He also reiterated the NCAA's commitment to safety of Nigeria's aviation sector. NAN leant that another aircraft was later provided to convey the passengers to Lagos. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/lagos-bound-plane-makes-air-return.html |

The former senior special assistant to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan gives his opinion on ending the lingering fuel crises..Read below The perennial fuel scarcity with its attendant pains and misery is here again. This phenomenon has become an intermittent plague that has bedevilled our national life for decades now. For most part of the life of the last administration it was contained to some extent by government pandering to the often repeated threats and blackmail of the league of importers or the members of the Tanker drivers association. Government did this at very great and sometimes unjustifiable costs. The present prevailing economic conditions however precludes government from delving into such luxury. This government, unlike its predecessor, is luckier because it has removed the contentious fuel subsidy without rancour or any major societal upheavals. What it must now do is take the next bold step and carry the deregulation of the downstream to its logical conclusion. Government must remove all constraints and restrictions, and completely liberalise the importation of Petroleum Products. Let all business men and financially capable companies import various grades of PMS and distribute and sell to the Nigerian public at their prices. This will put pressures on the special discharging facilities at our ports. Therefore a follow through action of concessioning new facilities to build, operate and own must of necessity be put in place. Many smaller non oil producing nations in Africa, Togo, Benin, Mali. Tanzania. Uganda and even Lesotho do not have petroleum scarcity ever! I am not sure of any country in the World with our level of our economic status where the Government is directly involved in importation, disistribution and selling of petroleum products. The PPPRA should be scrapped forthwith as its continued existence and functionality runs contrary to the fundermental principle of deregulation and liberalization of the Petroleum sector. Finally of great concern to me is the unwritten discriminatory and insensitive policy of petrol stations nationwide not to sell petrol to people in jerry cans. It is the poor and low level middle class amongst us majorly who need to fill their small gen sets with petrol just to get a few hours of sleep after the labour of the day. Those of us who are rich need petrol for our cars and diesel for our generators. The argument that storing petrol in jerry cans at home is purile. Travelling by automobiles is equally dangerous because of accidents but we don't ban purchase if cars instead we warn road users of dangers of bad driving and get drivers to comply with driving regulations http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/fuel-scarcity-and-what-we-must-do-doyin.html cc: lalasticlala |
Dr Ibe Kachikwu has joined President Muhammadu Buhari in apologising to Nigerians on the lingering fuel scarcity, but he promised that the massive queues at the various petrol stations will disappear in the next two days. He spoke yesterday at a monitoring tour of filling stations in Abuja. “I apologise to Nigerians for all the pains, nobody wants to see people spend up to two hours on fuel queues. “The president is very bothered about this, and if there is anything that bothers him, it is the sight of people waiting for fuel but we are doing everything we can, the NNPC is taking the whole nation on its shoulders. Kachikwu added that the corporation had massively increased its truck out petrol to depots and filling stations in the country. “God willing, we will see this through and in the next one or two days, we should be clear and we are looking at long term “Impressive, we have enough coming in, obviously the three days of strike hit us very badly but we are supplying an average of over 300 trucks again into Abuja. ” It is going to take a bit of while for the queues to clear off and we are hoping that between tomorrow and the next one, two days, the queues will all disappear. “We are continuing to pump in, a lot of our stations are open 24 hours a day,” he said The minister noted that as long term strategy, there would be the need to systemically look at how to prepare the nation in circumstances to respond to emergencies. He said that he would initiate a long term solution to curb the menace of products scarcity in the country. “We are obviously not getting it as well as we should,” he added. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/fuel-scarcity-will-end-on-monday.html cc: lalasticlala |

The suspect, who was nabbed by the policemen along Abeokuta-Expressway, Ikeja axis, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria said that stealing had become his act since childhood. He made this confessional statement upon his arrival at the RRS’ headquarters at Alausa, mentioning Sanni Azeez, 27, and Hakeem Kamoru,40, as receivers of the stolen items. According to him, “the act of stealing has become part and parcel of me. I am a specialist in burgling unsuspecting members of public’s houses without their knowledge. I used to gain entrance into any house by cutting the door and window net with a razor blade. I derive pleasure in taking what does not belong to me.” “Apart from house burgling, I also operate during a traffic jam most especially most areas prone to traffic congestion such as Ikorodu Road, Lagos-Abeokuta, Apapa-Oshodi Expressways and so on. The last operation I went was at Ilupeju where luck ran out of me on getting to Ikeja.” During an interrogation, he explained that he entered the building through the balcony door which was left opened before proceeding to the victim’s room to steal three handsets, two Nokia and one blackberry phones with other valuables. The suspect revealed that the receivers of all his stolen phones were his friends living in Akala Street in Mushin local government. The suspect had stolen the mobile phones and other valuables at Ilupeju area before the Policemen suspected his movements along Ikeja upon seeing them during routine patrol on the highway. “We noticed his suspicious movement upon sighting us. He wanted to drop his cross bag at one corner but when he found out that we have seen him, he bolted. But we made a hot chase and later caught up with him before Ile-Zik. We interrogated him why taking to his heels immediately he saw us, he could not provide satisfactory answers then we conducted a thorough check on his bag where we recovered the stolen items,” a top police officer who craved anonymity said. The police said that his confessional statement enabled them to apprehend the receivers of all the stolen handsets in Mushin. The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Superintendent of Police, SP Dolapo Badmus, said the suspects would face the Wrath of the Law for the offence committed. The three suspects have been further transferred to Ilupeju Divisional Police station upon a request from the station’s Divisional Police Officer (DPO) to continue the investigation. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/photo-i-was-born-to-steal-suspected.html cc: lalasticlala |
At least, 16 more bodies have been removed from the ruin of the 5-storey building which collapsed in Lekki area of Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Tuesday. This brings to 34, the people that have died as a result of the collapse of the massive building being developed by the Lekki Worldwide Estate Limited. Only 13 people have survived the collapse so far. While 18 bodies were removed from the debris on Tuesday, 16 were evacuated up till 4pm on Wednesday. And more people are still believed trapped in the rubbles. As at 2pm , spokesperson, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye said that 12 more dead bodies had so far being removed from the debris, making it a total of 30 removed from the collapsed building. He said apart from the 13 people rescued on Tuesday, no other person was rescued alive today, while rescue operation continued. Rescue operators include officers of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Lagos State Fire Services, Lagos State Ambulance Service, LASAMBUS, Rapid Response Squad, RRS, Civil Defence, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Navy and the Nigeria police. Lagos has witnessed several building collapse with devastating effect. Apart from the Synagogue building collapse of 2014 which claimed over 116 lives, the Lekki collapse ranks next in devastation in the last two decades in Lagos. Enforcement of Town Planning Laws in Lagos has been at the lowest ebb, with developers flagrantly breaking the laws and going scot-free. In most cases, the Lagos State Government plays the reactive role rather than being proactive by enforcing the law. Thousands of buildings are being developed in the metropolis without approved plan from the state government, while developers often used substandard materials to erect buildings to maximize cost at the expense of people’s lives. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/03/collapsed-lekki-building-death-toll.html cc: lalasticlala |
Nigeria may be turning a corner in its dollar reserves, as data published by the Central Bank of Nigeria shows a rise since 12 February.
