Standing at 5ft 11 inches, barrel-chested carpenter, Ajisafe Akande, appears like a formidable contender in the heavyweight boxing category.

But he did not fight an opponent in his category. He engaged in a fatal bout with his wife, Fasila, over the custody of their four-and-a-half-year-old son, Abdullahi. Fasila did not survive the fight.

Akande did not heed the warning of Horace, the Roman poet, who lived in 65BC. ”Anger is a momentary madness, so control your passion or it will control you,” Horace warns in his Epistles.

A Chinese proverb also cautions, ”If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will escape a hundred days of sorrow.” Neither did Akande consider the admonition of Chinua Achebe, who writes in Anthills of the Savannah, ”An angry man is always a stupid man.”

Returning from work late on Wednesday evening, Akande had gone to see Abdullahi, his son, who lived with his estranged wife, Fasila, in Balogun area of Orita-Gbaemu, Osogbo.

Having lost two of his four children, Akande had become critical of the welfare of the rest. Particularly, he had problem with the way his wife was looking after Abdullahi, and threatened to take him away from her. But Fasila had resisted previous attempts by Akande to take custody of the little boy.

Speaking with our correspondent at Oja-Oba Police Station, where he is being held, Akande said he was sad when he got to Fasila‘s residence and found Abdullahi all on his own without his mother. In that instance, Akande resolved to take Abdullahi with him but Fasila arrived shortly.

”I am an indigene of Osogbo,” he began. ”I live at No 3A, Ibokun Road, Osogbo. Help me beg government, I won‘t do so again. It‘s the devil‘s work. I did not mean to kill her. I did not touch her. She was the one that bit me and clawed me with her nails. It was when she bit my finger that I pushed her away. She dragged the boy with me. But I eventually removed the boy from her grip and I went to the police station to report the matter.

“I told the police that I had taken my son from his mother. I left my phone number and residential address with the police. When the DPO called me on Thursday morning, I thought he wanted to settle the quarrel for us. I did not know that my wife had died over the night.”

When asked if he suspected his wife was having extra marital affair, Akande said, ”I did not like the wayward life she was leading. I mean, she wasn‘t taking good care of the boy; she was not always at home and I felt this was affecting her upbringing of the boy.”

An eyewitness, who pleaded anonymity, said the couple engaged in a tug of war over the custody of the child.

He said, ”They were dragging the poor boy between themselves. The boy was weeping profusely but the man had the upper hand in the end and he left with the boy. He beat the woman when she prevented him from taking the boy away. She fainted after her husband had left. She was confirmed dead at the hospital.”

The relatives of Fasila were still in shock when our correspondent visited her home on Thursday as they declined to comment on the issue.

A neighbour, who pleaded for anonymity, described Fasila as an easy-going young woman, who was hard-working and friendly.

”She loved Abdullahi so much and she didn‘t want him to be taken away by his father. She felt she was entitled to one of her two surviving children. She felt she would never have access to the boy again if his father took him away,” the neighbour said.

Police Public Relations Officer, Osun State Command, Mr. Olabode Akinola, said the case would be transferred from Oja-Oba Divisional Police Station to the state Criminal Investigation Department, Osogbo, for thorough investigation.

The PPRO said, ”We want to determine the motive behind the alleged act. Was it intentional or not? An autopsy will be performed to know the actual cause of death. Human life is sacred and violation of such will not be treated with levity.”

In the 90's we were all told that we should get of the plane that the plane was needed in Abuja (during the Abacha Regime) this was the old Nigerian Airways

Someone once mentioned to me that the last time he got on the old NA the plane crash landed at MM in Lagos, he said it was like the plane just dropped 500ft from the sky unto the tarmac
Travel › Re: Bellview: The Worst Airline In Nigeria. Don't Try It! by omar22(m): 2:59pm On Aug 28, 2009
Please spare me about Bellview being Nigerian = Failure etc. What a load of bollocks. For the price you paid for your ticket, what did you expect? VIP treatment? How can you pay £320 for a Lagos - London flight, and expect to be comfortable? Did you pick the airline because of the price, or because of the comfort? If you wanted comfort, why didn't you fly first class with BA? Did they not deliver the services advertised (i.e fly you to your destination). So what are you complaining about? Lagos to PH, 45 minutes flight, and you are complaining about food. Didn't you eat before you left the house?
Excuse me! so because its cheap that means i should have an heart attack on the flying molue!! I paid £179 from London to Chicago (an £11hrs ok we stopped at Texas) the journey was so smooth, I thought I was in a Swissair or Emirate, Even Ryair that cost £1 from London to Brussel, you would still enjoy your flight.  I once got a flight from Gatwick to Spain, we were told that they need to replace a small device (something smaller than a fuse) an hour later, the engineer had a form to be signed,

I was thinking to myself that if that was Nigerian plane, they wouldnt even bother. I dont care how much a pay for a flight, the air firm has a duty to provide a good service and their plane should be up to a certain standard (Satisfactory level) before they are allowed to even fly from Ikeja to Agege let alone Abuja!!!

DON'T EVER CALL THE COPS EXCEPT YOU WANT TO FINALLY DESTROY YOUR MARRIAGE
***EXCUSE ME****

Tell me what should she do when the husband revves up for his next round of beating he is prepared to dish out on the wife?

because it seems like its acceptable for the guy to knock 7 bells out of his wife and she should stand still because she has a chin like George Forman!!!!
TV/Movies › Re: Robert De Niro Or Al Pacino. Who Is Better? by omar22(m): 9:58pm On Aug 27, 2009
Robert De Niro
2 Oscar

Al Pacino

No Oscar

In fact De Niro has had more blockbuster movies, commands more money, has gone from the Hero to Villian, from thriller to comedy, Al Pacino is not even in the same class, Al Pacino is in the same class as the morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkin or gene hackman level, when you talk about De Niro, then you think of Jack Nicholson, Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando etc.

It is always the young and single ones who scream and bark 'call the cops'.

While i do not condone anyform of physical violence especially in a married home i also do not think calling the security agents would do anything good for a/your marriage.
Oh please save the loose the husband slogan, the cops would only ask you to leave the house and ask if you want to press charges, like I said earlier on, the Nigerian that beat his wife to death in 1995 in North London didnt start over night, the wife didnt want to call the police because theirs a strong chance the husband would be deported, well the wife is now six feet under the guy got life (released after 10 years and his life continues). I would advise any woman to call the police if a pattern of beating develops. I know of a Ghanian lady who married a Sierra Loanian, the first the guy beat her, she warned him that she would let that pass as a mistake, the next time the husband beat her, he found himself in free town,

when they lock her husband up, will you become her husband?
when she starts sleeping outside, will that guarantee hapiness?

Hey lady don't forget you are from Africa
Here we go again! because she is an African does that automatically mean she is a punching bag, the reason why it still happens today or it looks like a norm among Africans is because its one of those knowledge being passed down from generation to generation, a boy that saw his father beat the living daylight out of his mother is more likely to do the same to his wife unless he breaks that stronghold! no wonder the western world still think we live in tress! one little our culture is thrown into the mix as an excuse!

am not saying because things got physical the first time it automatically means the end of the manager, but when it becomes regular or a set pattern am sorry that marriage has run its course but hey, who am I?

I know of a man who beats his wife almost everyday afterwards have sex with her which I cant get my head round to me its rape! now if you see the life of the children it mirrors the parents,
Family › Re: I Had A Fight With My Husband by omar22(m): 3:29pm On Aug 26, 2009
why should she call the cops or start bring inlaws in
So she should sit around and wait for "Busta Douglas" to come around and rain blows on the wife,

Which part of the weaker vessels people dont understand?
Family › Re: I Had A Fight With My Husband by omar22(m): 3:06pm On Aug 26, 2009
call the cops?
what if shes the one always on the assault?
the story didnt say
The guy could easily walk away and wait for her to cool down, raging woman could do anything when they are angry and they dont fight fairly, if a gun is in sight dont be shocked if she heads for it,
Family › Re: I Had A Fight With My Husband by omar22(m): 3:01pm On Aug 26, 2009
on the other hand,

Whats wrong with her calling the cops? should she wait for him to knock 7 bells out of her, in 1995 a Nigerian beat his wife to death only because she didnt want to call the police due to his immigration status, she died because of blood clot to the brain but the husband thought he was dishing out a lesson (well thats what he said in court).

Look I would tell any woman, "if the husband is dishing out a beating to you" you have a duty to report him, run or wait and see how strong your chin is when he lands the blows
Family › Re: I Had A Fight With My Husband by omar22(m): 2:43pm On Aug 26, 2009
Hitting him back wasn't a wise choice. . .sorry I would have called the cops were I in that situation. . .screw what anyone says. . .he hit you once without even considering your baby. . .he would do it again!

Look am not here to defend the husband but during an arguments women don’t fight fairly, they dig deep into sensitive issues and throw it their man, some men would react some would walk away, but in reality a wife beater is a no no no it shows that he is a  coward! But did YOU say anything to him that might have triggered him to physically assault you?  And be honest!

The Gospel truth is, people dont think like along the lines you broke it down, its like reading George Owen's Animal farm "we are led by pigs" I think the Government lacks foresight in every sense!

When FIFA said that the NFA has to be a private entity and not under the Govt, some people nearly passed out!!!

what do you expect!!!

Theirs almost 7 to 8 channel on Sky that shows Nollywood movies (I dont know whether they ask for their permission) in England the sale of these movies has automatically slowed down the sale which would automatically lead to a slow down in production (which I pray for because Nollywood have been churning out to much crap movies for my liking)

Theirs a reason why a hollywood film that been shown at the cinema would take up to another 8 months before its been shown on Sky for everyone to see

Your point?
