Regarding the aircraft chosen by Arik Air for that long haul, the A340 is renowned as an underpowered piece of chit whose well-known structural weakness in the tail vertical stabilizer may likely have been to blame for the recent Air France A340 stormy weather crash into the ocean off the West African coast.

Last year on my way to London waiting in the lounge to board the plane, one of the staff or crew notice to passengers who had hand luggages in excess of the original 9kg (or is it 10kg) the lady's hand luggage looked well over 30kg it was so huge, the other guy's luggage was huge but not as the lady, now tell between Checking in and boarding this lady has acquired more stuff and gone through Immigration, both were told to either leave the luggage behind or send it as an extra suit case mean they have to pay the fixed fee! for the extra luggage! she brought out her phone calling that one this one but the crew member said no, the other guy accepted his fate and paid the extra fee, now tell me if that situation had occur and the crew were Nigerian? the story would be different, they would have brided their way or someone from the top would have made a call to let the lady through, I could remember during the mid 90s at Heathrow airport people flying by the old Nigeria airway Looking at the queue you would think that we were at a sea port that people want to ship their luggage to Nigeria, so huge no wonder things quickly pack up with the airline….
