He is a perfect representation of what is wrong with Nigeria:
- He is greedy.
- A ruling class/elite
- Using religion to drive home selfish agendas
- Support violence and get to enrich himself through it
- Practice favoritism and man-know-man politics
- Practices Godfatherism
- Member of the Cabals
- Contract Kickbacks and hyper inflated budgets
- On the list of Nigerian leaders with no leadership skills.
- Corrupt and surrounded by the very corrupt as well.

I have said it several times on this forum, the petroleum subsidy saga would forever remain the biggest theft in recorded history of humankind! How can one explain such an exponential rise in subsidy receipts when there was no corresponding rise in the usage of petroleum products?? The most tell tale indicator that it was a carefully orchestrated theft is the fact that it happened in an election season!!

Nigerians would do themselves a huge favour by voting out this crop of morbidly corrupt class of humanoids from the corridors of power!

Politics › Re: Nigerian's Trade Surplus Now At 20.3% by omenka(m): 11:04am On Aug 22, 2014
barcanista: Nigeria’s international trade remains at 92% import, 8% export in six months
September 11, 2013

As an import-dependent economy, Nigeria’s international trade has remained unbalanced as the volume of import continues to surpass that of export. This is as the container market in Nigeria in the last six months has been strongly dominated by imports.

Since the last six months, Nigeria’s import and export ratio has remained at 92 percent import to 8 percent export, said Jan Thorhauge, managing director, Maersk Nigeria Limited (MNL) and head of the Central West Africa Cluster, in a trade report released by Maersk Nigeria Limited.

The containerised import market to Nigeria is estimated to have ended at about 159,000 forty foot equivalent units (FFE) compared to 155,000 FFE recorded within the same period in 2012. The report shows that most of Nigeria’s laden containers come from the Far East, mostly China, while the export commodities have been going into Europe.

“Major products coming from the Middle East are industrial raw materials, chemicals, electronics, iron and steel and tyres, while industrial raw materials, frozen fish and cars are the goods that come mainly from Europe,” he said.

There was an increase in sourcing pattern, which was attributed to better pricing from these regions, increase in the age limits of imported automobiles from five to 10 years, increased construction as well as growing demands for finished products by Nigerian populace.

Charcoal and agricultural produce including cocoa, sesame, cashew nuts and cotton were the commodities mostly exported out of the country in the first half of the year. According to the report, charcoal export rose by 76 percent when compared to the volume in the same period in 2012. The report attributed the rise in volume to the longer winter season experienced in Europe.

On the other hand, finished products exported out of the country within the period experienced 39 percent growth because major manufacturing firms made Nigeria their production hub for the West African region.

Nigeria’s export ratio can be improved, the Maersk boss said, if government improves on infrastructure such as power supply, road network and rail services.

The dominant items imported into the country include cars, electronics, construction materials, food items, chemicals, electrical fittings, machinery and paper, among other goods covering industrial as well as private needs.

www.businessdayonline.com/2013/09/nigerias-international-trade-remains-at-92-import-8-export-in-six-months/
It's even far worse than I thought!! Smh.

Basic knowledge of economics gives one the understanding that there can be no trade surplus without a very vibrant manufacturing/industrial sector!!

What does Nigeria manufacture?? What do we export?? You don't keep exporting raw materials and import finished products while expecting a healthy trade balance sheet.

That aint rocket science, it is basic economics!

Had those sandals then they used to call Ali and Simbi (if my memory serves me well) and some girls panties they used to call "mothercare" grin. D¤pe stuffs everyone who knew "what's up" must have.

Remember then we used to wake up, get prepared, and have the school bus come take us to school. Twas fun driving around town and picking up other pupils from various points before finally heading to school. Comfortable buses with ACs and fans hanging on the roof of the cabin. Later they stopped putting on the AC and just turn on the fans only. Later they came up with a ticketing scheme where you buy monthly tickets to board the buses! Then later, the buses stopped showing up altogether!!!

Things just took a turn for the worse generally.

Oh Nigeria...

Politics › Nigeria’s Revenue Earning Declines By N154.6billion by omenka(op): 8:34am On Aug 22, 2014
Revenues collected by the Federal Government dropped by
about N154.56 billion in July, the Minister of State for
Finance, Bashir Yuguda, said on Tuesday.

Mr. Yuguda said this at the end of the Federation Accounts
Allocation Committee, FAAC, meeting in Abuja and added
that only about N630.32 billion revenue was realized during
the month, down from N784.88 billion collected the
preceding month.

Mr. Yuguda attributed the sharp decline in revenue to Force
Majeure declared by Shell Petroleum Development
Company, SPDC, and a series of shutdown of trunk lines and
pipelines at various terminals.

Force Majeure is always declared by a company to bring to
the attention of their customers about unforeseen
developments in their operations that may likely make
meeting obligations to scheduled contracts difficult or
impossible.

Mr. Yuguda also identified the substantial decline
experienced by the Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, in
their Companies Income Tax, CIT, collections as also
contributory to the dip in revenue for the month under
review.

In spite of the shortfall in revenue accruals, the minister said FAAC still distributed a total sum of N654.58 billion to the three tiers of government as allocation from all revenue
sources, an amount that is N30.31 billion more than what
was shared in June.

Politics › APC Begins Process To Pick Presidential Candidate October by omenka(op): 8:18am On Aug 22, 2014
Nigeria’s main opposition party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fixed October for the commencement of its primary elections that would culminate in the nomination of its presidential candidate for the 2015 general election.

It also demanded a temporary lifting of the curfew currently in place in Adamawa State in the preparation for the October 11 governorship election in the state.

These are some of the resolutions taken at the party’s National Executive committee meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

The APC spokesperson, Lai Mohammed, said after the meeting that the NEC approved the use of the modified direct primaries for picking the party’s presidential candidate in subsequent elections.

Among members of the party believed to be eyeing the presidency are former military Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and governor of Kano State, Rabi’u Kwankwaso.

Mr. Mohammed said the party demanded the lifting of the curfew in Adamawa state to ensure mass participation in the election.

Politics › IS World Vision Apocalyptic- US Defence Secretary by omenka(op): 7:54am On Aug 22, 2014
US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel says Islamic State group
has an "apocalyptic" vision and that it must be defeated.

The sophistication, wealth and military might of the Islamic
State group represents a major threat to the United States
that may surpass that once posed by al-Qaeda, US military
leaders have said.

"They are an imminent threat to every interest we
have, whether it's in Iraq or anywhere else," Defence
Secretary Chuck Hagel told reporters at the Pentagon.

Hagel's assessment of Islamic State, which gained
strength during Syria's civil war and swept into northern Iraq earlier this summer, sounded a note of alarm several days after the group posted a video on social media showing one of its fighters beheading an American journalist who had been kidnapped in Syria.

Asked if the group posed a threat to the United States
comparable to that of the attacks of September 11, 2001,
Hagel said it was "as sophisticated and well-funded as any
group we have seen."

"They are beyond just a terrorist group. They
marry ideology, a sophistication of ... military prowess. They
are tremendously well-funded. This is beyond anything
we've seen."

Hagel spoke as the United States continued attacking
Islamic State targets in Iraq. In the past two weeks, US
drones and fighter jets have conducted 89 airstrikes against
the group's targets in northern Iraq.

So far, US President Barack Obama has sought to limit
his renewed military campaign in Iraq to protecting
American diplomats and civilians under direct threat.
Obama ended the war in Iraq that killed thousands of
American soldiers and consumed US foreign policy for
nearly a decade,

Even after the gruesome killing of US journalist James Foley,
Obama is seen as unlikely to deepen his near-term military
involvement in either Iraq or Syria as he seeks to avoid
becoming embroiled in another messy Middle Eastern
conflict, Reuters news agency reported.

But US officials say they have not ruled out
escalating military action against the Islamic State group,
which has increased its overt threats against the United
States since the air campaign in Iraq began.

'End-of-days vision'

"We haven't made a decision to take additional actions
at this time, but we truly don't rule out additional action
against ISIL if it becomes warranted," Ben Rhodes, a senior
Obama aide, told National Public Radio earlier on Thursday,
using another name for the group.

General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs
of Staff, said officials were worried about the possibility that
European or US nationals, radicalised after fighting in
Iraq or Syria, would return to their home countries.
Dempsey suggested the group would remain a danger
until it could no longer count on safe havens in areas of
Syria under rebel control.

"This is an organisation that has an apocalyptic, end-of-days
strategic vision and which will eventually have to be
defeated," Dempsey said.

"To your question, can they be defeated without
addressing that part of their organisation which resides in
Syria? The answer is no. That will have to be addressed on
both sides of what is essentially at this point a non-existent
border."

Agriculture › Price Of Food Items On A continuous Rise - NBS by omenka(op): 5:02am On Aug 22, 2014
The pockets of Nigerians have continued to thin out as the
cost of food rose month after month since March 2014.

Once again, the Food index edged higher to 9.9 percent in
July from 9.8 percent in June.

People generally paid more for items like bread and cereals,
meats, and fish groups.

The pace of the increase, the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics
[NBS], said was weighed upon by slower increases in the
dairy, sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery; and
coffee, tea and cocoa groups.

“After increasing at a faster pace for the previous three
months, the pace of price increases measured by the ‘All
items less farm produce’ or Core sub-index eased in July,” a
report from the National Bureau of Statistics said.
Prices, it added, rose by 7.1 percent (year-on-year), a
full percentage point lower than the rate recorded in June,
while slower price increases in the alcoholic beverages,
tobacco and kola; clothing and footwear; housing water,
electricity.

Gas and other fuel; and many other divisions contributed to
the muted increases in the Core sub-index.
On a month on month basis, the agency said price increases
in the headline index eased for the second consecutive
month, with prices increasing by 0.65 percent in July, lower
from a 0.77 percent increase in June.

The slower price increase of the Headline index in July were
equally driven by a slower rise in all areas that contribute to
the index, with Urban prices (year-on-year) increasing at a
faster pace for the third consecutive month in July.

Rural prices, on the other hand, followed a similar trend
over the period, increasing by 8.1 percent from 8.0 percent
in June. On a month on month basis, the bureau said the
pace of increases in Urban prices eased in July after
advancing faster for two consecutive months, with Urban
Headline index increasing by 0.70 percent, about 0.1
percentage points lower from June.

The Rural All-items index rose at a slower pace by 0.60
percent in July, down from 0.74 percent in June.
The percentage change in the average composite CPI for
the 12-month period ending in July 2014 over the average of
the CPI for the previous twelve-month period was recorded
at 8.0 percent, unchanged from the average 12-month rate
of change recorded in June 2014.

The corresponding 12-month year-on-year average
percentage change for the Urban index stood at 8.1 percent
in July, unchanged in the previous month, while the
corresponding Rural index eased to 7.8 percent for the
Month of July.

Food prices, as observed by the Food sub-index, the report
stated, rose by 9.9 percent (year-on-year) in July, marginally
higher from 9.8 percent recorded in the previous month.
“This is the highest price increase observed in a year, and
an advancement in the pace of price increases for the fifth
consecutive month,” the report said.

It attributed the price increases during the month to price
increases in fruits, vegetables, and potatoes, yam and other
tuber groups.
On a month-on-month basis, food prices increase
recorded approximately the same rate of change for four
consecutive months by 0.8 percent, with highest price
increases recorded in the Fruits, Meats, Fish, and Potatoes,
Yam and Other Tubers groups.

On average annual rate of change of the Food sub-index for
the 12-month period ending in July 2014, the report said it
was 9.5 percent, unchanged from the previous month.
After increasing for three consecutive months, the pace of
increase of “All items less Farm Produce” or Core index,
which excludes the prices of volatile agricultural products
slowed during the month under review.

Prices rose by 7.1 percent, down from 8.1 percent in June,
indicating the slowest price increase recorded since the
beginning of the year.
Price increases on a month-on-month basis also slowed to
this year’s low, as prices rose by 0.2 percent, down by 0.5
percentage points from June.

Also, Nigeria’s consumer price index, CPI, which measures
inflation rate in the country, rose 0.1 percentage points from
8.2 percent in June to 8.3 percent in July (year-on-year),
latest statistics by the NBS shows.

The NBS, in its latest edition of the statistical news released
late on Sunday, said the rise represented the fifth
consecutive month of year-on-year increases in the headline
inflation index.

The Bureau indicated that the faster pace of price increases
recorded in the Headline inflation index were attributed to
an increase in multiple divisions mirrored by the Food sub-
index observed in movements in food prices between
February and July.
The report contains the revised CPI based on Nigeria
Living Standard Survey (NLSS) conducted between 2003 and
2004.
