[Minister of Finance Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala]

Minister of Finance Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala yesterday denied reports by an online medium saying that she bought a N1.2 billion mansion in Maitama, Abuja.
In a statement signed by her Senior Special Assistant, Paul C. Nwabuikwu, the minister said that the news was simply the latest in a well financed smear campaign against her “by persons and groups whose interests are profoundly selfish and anti-Nigeria.”

The statement reads thus: “It has been brought to our attention that an online news website, Pointblanknews.com has just published a story alleging that Ngozi, who is also the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, has purchased a property worth N1.2billion in Maitama, Abuja.”

According to the website, the minister paid for the property in November 2011, she said. Iweala said that “the story is totally false and without foundation. The minister has no interest of any sort in the property in question.”
She did not even buy a house. undecided

The woman in question has alot of money with or without her job. For those that unaware Okonjo Iweala comes from a Royal family.  Her father is the Obi of Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family of Ogwashi-Ukwu. She might have paid the house with her legit money or not. This is poor journalism, they should have gone farther rather than speculate.

When will you people learn to worry about yourself and stop engaging yourself in other people's business. Is it by force?  The Igbo mentioned what is going in Nigeria today is what they experienced after the civil war and over-comed it.  The community proved they do not need handouts to survive, they can manage themselves without one. What is your problem with that? Didn't your people chest-beat on NL, Igbo do not have political voice in Nigeria, now you want their voice?  grin grin You cannot force people to join a failed protest, you just cannot. Una getting desperate, stop begging and masking it of as a sincere concern.

I hate the stupidity Nigerian whom have not traveled outside of their villages display on NL.  Jealousy has never been good Nigerians.  That is difference between a typical white man and a typical black man. The shame

lukkie:
I'd feel bad if i was Ibo too. But this is actually true. Why do Ibo buy so much property outside their homeland when they remember the wounds of Biafra? Or do they think it can't happen again? Yorubas also buy property outside their homeland but it's largely insignificant compared to Ibos.

But everybody should know that Nigeria may implode at any moment. This is even being fast-tracked by the clueless president we currently have.

Goodluck to everyone sha.
The same reason Igbo buy houses, etc outside of Africa or where-ever they reside and also the same reason why the Igbo who own property all over Nigeria, has alot of property back in their hometown as well. Long story short, those property latter in life will bring wealth incase things become to scarce for them, at least they have something to fall back on thus the reason why most of the Igbo returning back to Enugu sold all their property up north.  That money will help them open up a new business and feed them until that business kicks off.

SMH.  Nigerians, Nigerians, I pity Una.  This is why poverty is lower in SE and SS region in Nigeria, they think ahead when in comes to life.

Growing up, I had many yoruba friends. Its a shame so many of them hate us, because we have a lot in common. I have lurked on NL for some time and just started posting. I never heard such hate for us in person. After the war, we were giving 20 pounds each, our property was seized, making us among the poorest people in the world. By the grace of God, 40 years later we have essentially are equal or surpass them in almost every sphere of life from sports, entertainment, academics, business acumen, beauty/good looks, shear determination, etc. We have waxed stronger and stronger. We have been through more than any people in Nigeria and we still hold our heads up high. I'm sure that some of it is envy. Jealousy is just love and hate at the same time.
You've spoken the truth, it is like you are reading my mind: I thought they were cool, not tribalistic, jealous and all time hatred. Few visit on NL, my eyes opened.  I pray one day all the Igbo in this world visit this forum and see oo, they wouldn't even know how to process it but we, as the people will learn who we can or cannot trust!!! The bolded, na true talk.  When I think about it, I actually laugh, the Igbo community despite getting the short end in Nigeria has surpassed all Nigerian region that took the little they had after the Biafran war.  Comical to say the least, It is a shame the curse the british descended on SE and SS.  It is a shame indeed. SS, though we are used and dumped on by Nigeria daily, our region is better in many categories than other Nigerian region.  The only other region that can stand in par with us is SE. Though I know this is mocking, I think you hit the nail in the head.  Business is everywhere in SE and SS thus alot of competition thus they seek places that have alot of potential but is wasted on the indigenous of that land which in return provide very little to no competition from the indigenous of the land.  Most of the Igbo living out are the ones who couldn't or were unable to make it in their region thus seeking an easier place for them. Comical enough, they remain the poor ones when compared to all Igbo community in the world. Maybe they should stop fearing competition and try learning from businessmen in Igboland.

Remember SE dose not need oil to survive, great nations of this world are not great through crude oil. an Igbo son does not beg any were in the world, it is a God given potential.so there is nothing man can do about that.

SE and SS has been one historically, culturally and geographically even before the discovery of Crude oil. There are Igbos in Rivers,Delta and even part of c river. Rather i think is people like you that is trying to create divisions in the eastern region because you cannot resist crude oil.
Your almajery begging mentality will not allow you to leave eastern Nigeria alone.

@ nnena1 you right, but they are not constructive in their protest. no body is even talking about the wicked importers who have been sharing this money with our devilish politicians all these yrs. All they are shouting is Gej b/cos they think he is a gentle president nd some feel he is weak.

@ GAR3TH. Also in America, a particular region will not be sponsoring the bombing of innocent citizens simple because they want to undermine the regime of a president or to make him appear incapable.
Isn't it comical to say the least.  Beaf, a non-igbo but SS, started this thread but yet Igbo & SE are being blamed for calling other parasite.   No offense to Beaf, I like you. Nnenna1:
I understand the rationale (or theory) behind the removal of the subsidy. However, I read several posts here that calculated what is claimed to be the true cost of fuel (~N45) and I'm a little confused. I want to know how the removal of this subsidy translates to over a 100% increase in the price of fuel.

Honestly the people aren't angry at the subsidy removal. They aren't even really angry that the government is corrupt and Nigerians are suffering - after all the Nigerian government has been corrupt since inception and no one really complained (sad but true).

The REAL contention here is the increase in fuel price that happened in the blink of an eye - which in turn may cause much more corruption and suffering than Nigerians can take.

The government's history of elephant projects and siphoning away of the so called funds set aside for good use, is enough to convince Nigerians that this sacrifice may too be high to bear.

We must know how the books justify the intense spike in fuel price. In addition, if the intention is to "shift" subsidy to other areas how about we get results that we can see immediately? Double the minimum wage, for instance. Anything that can bring immediate relief the the burden of the common man.

I can sort of understand why South Easterners and Niger Deltans are a little quiet about this, but guys know that challenging the government, even if officials have good intentions, is for the betterment of everyone.

We all don't even have to like each other to see reason in this - let us speak up on this issue and demand that 1) Measures be taken to counteract the effect of the subsidy removal immediately, 2) the fuel subsidy be repealed and reintroduced subtly, and with counteracting measures to "even" things out or  3) the removal be repealed in its entirety.

Yes there is a small chance that this removal is for the better, but I have a sinking feeling that it will be for the very worst if these crucial issues are not addressed.

Should this removal backfire, it will severely affect everyone regardless of ethnicity. Please set aside whatever grudges you all may have and work towards a life that is less hellish, at least as far as SS and SE is concerned, if that is all matters.
Nnenna
undecided huh smiley smiley cheesy grin wink.  You are right, the concept behind the protest isn't about fuel subsidy as they claim but a more hidden agenda.

Politicians need more money to share.
I support the bolded. An average Igbo, SE and SS knows this protest is not going to change the mind of the of the politician especially when the protest is about something we experienced and still experiencing.  It is now a national problem and they b1tching about it  undecided.  As a former comment mentioned when SS was protesting and crying where was other Nigerian region, the only other region that stood up for us was SE, now they want us to protest with them? Commot.  When SE was protesting, they were branded as bad by Nigerians, now SE decided not to protest, Na wahalla too. What do they want? Is an Igbo or any other SE or SS protesting going to change the outcome of what happened? I suppose because the scapegoat refused to protest, a new scapegoat has to surface in case things turns sour and they do not want that.  I support Igbo not protesting; I support SE and SS as whole not protesting we want succession, not revolution.  Nigeria is unfixable and every day, Nigeria proves this fact.  Each year new problem surfaces and when that is dealt with, another problem surfaces. It is as easy as ABC, as they say you cannot save a dead man, all you can save is a dying man. Nigeria has corrupted the mind of SE and SS politicians, when Nigeria break apart, our politicians will be dealt with but as for now let us focus on the breaking away part thus SE and SS listen to the old, young and new do not protest.  Listen oo!, don’t get involved at all.
