My goodness. A well intentioned thread about important Nigerian history has descended into crude name calling. I wish I had not posted on this thread. The incredible aspect is that 90% of the book is NOT even about the "Igbo coup" issue being debated here.
It has to be Igbo coup because Katsumoto need to justify mass murder of innocent Igbos in 1966, tens of thousands for about 15 dead politicians.

Hear him out:

Katsumoto:
This guy must be high on something!!!!   grin grin grin grin grin

I guess I am responsible for instigating a group of Igbo officers to kill non-Igbo citizens. I must also be responsible for the political marriage between the Easterners and Northerners. Damn, I must also be responsible for ensuring that Zik assisted in the formation of Nigeria. Of course, I am responsible for Ojukwu taking a knife to a gun fight. Yes I am responsible.
The lesson has been well learned. Just don't pretend you were fighting back. You had been planning this extermination well before the events of 1966. I would even guess from the carpet crossing era in 1953.

To your utter disappointment, we survived, and are today talking freely about it. We will continue talking about it until it saturates our people because I strongly suspect there will be a next time. Today looks so much like 1966 in substantive ways.

HELL YES! They should study you like a book. cool cool

More like you are "the philosophy" to exterminate them, and you are still very much alive and potent. You represent their deadliest enemy in Nigeria. The deadly enemy is not the open and loud one like the northerners. The deadliest enemy is the hidden cowardly one (like Casius in Julius Caesar story). The history of my people from 1952 to 1970 prove that had they understood "you", they would have avoided about 95% of the problems they encountered in Nigeria even up to this day.
So my friend take your fake mask elsewhere.
I don sabi you now. cool Arthur Nzeribe and Uche Chukwumerije also understood you. My duty here is to ensure that other Igbo understand you as well.

THE picture of a Nigerian policeman or woman is one in faded uniform standing with a substandard weapon beside a rundown patrol truck with worn out tyres and broken windshield. He has no modern day radio system for communication. He looks beggarly, but angrily at the world with yesterday’s hunger in his eyes waiting for a victim.

Nigerians insult policemen and women to their faces like they are not fellow countrymen and women. They accuse the police of taking bribe, but do not condemn themselves for offering them bribe at every turn. Fact is, there is no group of Nigerian public servants that is as overloaded with the amount of responsibilities and expectations that the Nigerian Police Force is laden with that can hold its head above water. The Nigerian Police Force is structurally flawed. They are sinfully underpaid, under equipped, and undermined by the very people they are supposed to serve.

The Nigerian Police Force is structurally flawed because it is designed as a national force with wide ranging responsibilities not just to protect the lives and property of the Nigerian people, but its territories.  This is at a time when advanced democracies around the world like the United States of America and United Kingdom are looking inwards and effectively policing their people through state police systems.

This shift in focus from the federal-based police force to state and local police forces is the secret behind the success of such complex systems, with more challenging security demands. In fact, the police force in the United States includes not just the city police, but separate departments to deal with schools and traffic (like our traffic wardens).

State police forces in Nigeria will make a lot of sense and much-needed difference. Reputable citizens will be recruited to take care of the citizenry, unlike the present situation where non-indigenes go to other states to make money instead of work. They do whatever they can disinterestedly and go home. They literally destroy the barracks they live in knowing full well they will leave on transfer sooner or later. In the U.S., locals are employed in state police departments and posted close to home. This cuts down on corruption as they are heavily invested in the security of their home towns, where words get around quickly and criminals are quickly pointed out and flushed into dungeons.

The issue of improved emoluments for the police will be taken care of effectively through state police systems. States that can afford it can pay higher wages than others, and by so doing attract the very best to do their duties within the state. States can also follow this up by equipping their police department with functioning patrol cars, radio systems and weapons (pistols and AK-47) as the case may be. States do not have to wait for the Federal government to debate to death and politicize increased salaries and improved equipment for the police. States and local governments can do this independently for effective policing of their states and towns.

Having state police forces will help check the incessant infiltration of states of terrorists and extremist fanatics who parade themselves as religious converts aka Boko Haram and Maitasine. This is particularly important if Nigeria as a nation is serious about stopping the continued massacre of its citizenry every two years or so for religious purposes. Calling out soldiers time after time after the effect to parade burnt towns to plunder what remains of a disgraced people is adding insult to injury. Nigeria must take itself serious and police its people; else the fire started by those who are continually misinformed about the state of the nation will some day burn the hand that started it.

To checkmate this, Nigeria must reverse its course and instead adopt the state police system.
Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world that do not harness the experience, expertise and statesmanship of good police officers after their time in service. From all indications, Nigerians do not expect much from them, so do not prepare them for life after their service. This is not so in the United States. Retired police officers have turned out to become elected officials like mayors, councilmen and women, legislators, state prosecutors and senators. This is because of their continued stay within a state as state policemen and women. This way, they build a base based on their character and integrity. The people return this favour by electing them to elective positions. This is why the police are looked up to with respect in the United States.

Nigeria must not let the fear of regional militia as is continually harped upon each time a discourse on state police force is brought up keep it from emulating better systems that work. The federal police force has failed the Nigerian people and must be replaced soonest. States must be allowed to set up their own police force to manage the challenges they are faced with. The federal government through the NSO (national security organization), SSS (state security service) and CID departments can still control inter-state crimes for effective adjudication of serious federal crimes. The federal government must free itself of the immense responsibilities of policing every state in Nigeria to be truly effective.

To do this is to reverse the fortune and image Nigerians have of the police. Nigerians want to see healthy young men and women adorn the police uniform with pride and sense of purpose. Nigerians want to not just fear, but also to respect its police force. They want reason to assist the police. They want to help, but must be given the reason to do so. Now is the time.

Yes Lugard amalgamated Nigeria in 1914 but in 1957, James Robertson offered each region complete autonomy. We couldn't have done anything about the amalgamation in 1914 but we had options in 1957.

I am sorry to say but you argue like a child. 8 coup plotters who were not rich in resources are about to take on targets in Kaduna and Lagos and you are expecting them to expend resources in taking out a man who was in jail. I answered your moronic argument the other day but you are not satisfied. What was the point in expending resources to go to Calabar to kill Awo in prison. Now, of all the plotters, who would you have sent to Calabar? They were so under-staffed that it was Captain Nwobosi that was sent to Akintola in Ibadan. Not forgetting that Obienu did not turn up for the coup. Tell me, what would have been the point in wasting scarce resources to kill Awo when Awo would have still been in prison had the coup succeeded?

Why do I have to account for the thousands of people killed in the pogroms or the civil war? was I a party to it? was I even born. Stop personalising the argument. Just focus on the argument and stop your usual tactics of attacking the person that disagrees with you.
I told my Igbo folks to just focus of these people's logic and the "facts" they present. There are HOLES EVERYWHERE in them.

So it is no longer an Igbo coup? You want the whole world to believe that a tribe of about 12 million at the time could only find just 8 men to execute a plot to "take over Nigeria and dominate"? huh huh huh

I know hate can be a powerful thing, but dude I never knew it could make someone completely delusional.

I wouldn't ( and I know NO IGBO would) try to take over my clan in Nnewi using only 8 men, not to talk of taking over my sub-village, village or the town.

You want the world to believe that Ndigbo sent 8 men to topple things and create a scenario for Igbo superemacy in Nigeria.

Well to quote you: "It would take more than a man and his hunting dog to do that".

Anytime you people reach that conclusion, you insult your own intelligence(if you have any undecided).  It is frankly not even childish but moronic.

No coup in Nigeria was ever termed a tribal coup except Jan 1966 coup, and it was deliberate - to justify the planned extermination of Ndigbo.
PoliticsRe: Max Siollun Unravels That The 1966 Coup Was Not Just An ''igbo Coup'' by Onlytruth(m): 7:54pm On Jul 15, 2010
Katsumoto:
What is the correlation between stating that it was an Igbo coup and the pogroms which followed? Are they not mutually exclusive events? Is it not possible for one to state that it was a coup organised by Igbo officers without wanting the deaths of innocent people? Does the senseless pogroms justify the deaths of those killed in January 1966? Please lets leave sensationalism out of analysis. Were non-Igbo citizens singing hosana when the pogroms took place?

Your attempts at exonerating Ndigbo from the malaise bedeviling Nigeria is naive at best and mischievous at worst. Did you forget the actions of Igbo sons in forming the entity called Nigeria. Perhaps you are unaware of several events in our history. One did not need a soothsayer to know that the amalgamation of the various bodies into Nigeria would be a disaster. The British lumped the Republican Igbo, the feudal North together with the semi-republican and semi-feudal yoruba to form a nation. But the same British offered each region complete autonomy in 1957 with Awo accepting, Bello rejecting (on the basis that the North wasn't ready), and with Zik holding the deciding vote. What did Zik do? He chose to delay independence by three years so as to achieve a personal ambition of ruling over a UNIFIED Nigeria. Each region could have been autonomous by 1957 but instead we got Nigeria.

Then when the time for forming a coalition came, what did Zik do, he chose to serve under the errand boy (Balewa) of his rival Bello. Lets not forget that if you put Bello and Balewa together, they wouldn't be as educated and enlightened as Zik's left leg. Did you need a soothsayer to also tell you that a feudal North is the antithesis of a republican Ndigbo? The marriage between the two regions leads to the first coup in January 66 and the revenge coup in July 1967. Yet Cohomology wants us to believe that Ndigbo is blameless.

Who is to blame? Is it the North that did not want independence, was just satisfied with being ruled by the British and had its reverred leaders murdered and sought revenge? Or is it the West that wanted complete autonomy, was rebuffed by the other regions and was a bystander in the events of the 66? or is it Ndigbo who chose to unify Nigeria, delaying independence in the process, chose to get in bed with a suitor that wasn't suited to it and subsequently carried out the first putsch in the new nation killing non-Igbo citizens in the process?
Why not go back to 1914 to remind us how Igbo helped Lord Lugard to form Nigeria, and how prior to that Igbo  told the British to head to Nigeria? undecided
The fact is that you will NEVER accept the truth, because if you do you will have to account for the thousands that were murdered in the aftermath of the coup.

You vehemently refused to answer why the coup plotters completely left Awo alive in Calabar since they were planning total Igbo domination of Nigeria. At first, you tried to convince me that Calabar was not within reach. When I reminded you that Calabar was within a walking distance of my village, you changed again to something else -that Awo was under guard. I then reminded you that the coup plotters were heavily armed soldiers who could overwhelm mere prison guards in Eastern Nigerian jail. You still changed your point again.

You can choose to say whatever you want (you know the truth).  When one of the coup plotters stated that they wanted to enthrone Awolowo, a discerning mind would likely believe him because after all Awo is not a small fish by any measure at that time.
An "Igbo coup", planning to dominate Nigeria, would not miss Awo at all. Yet, he survived, to be freed by Ojukwu (because Ojukwu could still have defied Gowon over Awo's release). Ojukwu sent Awo home hale and hearty only for him to plot the most invidious extermination of the same people that saved him.

This is the most cogent reason why I was asking hard questions about the Eko Atlantic City. In my own research I found out that the city will have a sea wall (Levy) about 7 meters high. I wondered whether the planners considered this future sea level scenario.

Secondly, I had thought that the entire Lagos state needed a "comprehensive" sea wall that protects the whole state against future sea level increases. This is what I expected from a well thought out physical planning strategy (urban, regional, state and even national undecided to cover places like Niger delta). I have not seen any such plans yet. undecided

Nigeria being what it is, people are more interested in mega projects even if they aggravate the existing problems.
