Beaf:
No. The Nigerian reality is that an alarming proportion of the population finds it almost routine to bomb each other or embark on wholesale slaughter with whatever weapons come to hand. The few that are living side by side will not bring back the dead or save those who are next to die come the next ethnic, religious or resource clash.
A contract for our collective existence needs to be set out or we abandon the Nigerian project. Doing nothing costs lives.
Do you think folks like Kobojunkie are interested in that truth? They are the confusionists; those who believe that if you tell a lie long enough, it becomes true.

I am interested in what alternative you have; I'm talking about practical solutions that will resolve the current ethnic / religous malaise.
Kobo and crew have NONE! In fact I dare him to put forward his own solution, other than his usual "ALL NIGERIANS ARE EQUALLY GUILTY". They would even blame rape victims!

A friend of mine once told me, that he was very happy that Nigeria won't be going for the WORLD CUP. and i was quick to ask, WHY?
I might share your friend's concern but for a different reason. It is true that football is the only thing (apart from the gun) that unites Nigerians occassionally, but I'm begining to think that if Nigeria fails to qualify, it will precipitate other reactions from people, probably  forcing a real opportunity for dialogue and change.
Going to the world cup only masks our more serious problems.
The other thing I want to ask is that, if we had AREWA , ODUDUWA , BIAFRA and maybe others, vying for the world cup tickets, do you think none of them will qualify? I don't think so.
Already, two of Nigeria's clubs - Heartlands of Owerri and Kano Pillars of Kano- have qualified for the semi-finals of the African Champions League. It might even be an all Nigerian final!
That tells me that there are more strengths in our local managements and control than our central or federal controls.
PoliticsRe: Are Igbo's Really Jews? by Onlytruth(m): 7:21pm On Sep 15, 2009
Actually it may be the other way round! (who cares anyway!) Jews may be related to Igbos. Remember that Africa is the oldest continent in terms of human geography and anthropology. There are striking cultural and behavioral similarities between Igbos and Jews, but that is all to it! Igbo culture (as African culture) is much older than the Jewish culture.

@Nairaland politicians,

Honestly, we are all lilly livered armchair critics .we are all selfish, opinionated loosers who go no balls whatsoever.
We hide behind ethnicity to be throwing barbs at each other instead of facing reality.

My poser

1) If you really feel bad and hate another group so vehemently, arrange a walkout-- or call people of likeminds and get out
What if you have a gun pointed to your head?

2)If you feel you are bold, get your representative or senator to move a motion for any change you want in the polity
3) You know your oppressors are the people you elected/selected to go to Abuja and your state capitals and they are not serving right and
cannot confront them. You did not vote for them and you kept quiet
What if they are guarded by heavily armed mobile policemen?

4) When you have any difficulties- it is the fault of Hausaman/Igbo?Yoruba as the case might be
5) The cabal exploiting you is the same - military/political elite and they are located as follows

This is a clear lie!

-politicians and businessmen/contractors who steal your votes , corrupt the system and bank balances ( latest fad)
-lawyers and judges who manufacture judgments and injunctions for the ODili's and Ibori"s of our time
WHat do you expect an average Nigerian to do about that huh

- Ethnic jingoists in MEND/MAssoB /Afenifere/ Arewa etc etc who provide cover for all our phobias and ventilate them.
They are the only thing real about Nigeria, so face it and live with it!

- spineless people who occupy the civil service/ government positions in INEC, PTF/NDDC ETC.
More like THIEVES!

Nigerians, tell me who among these is not your brother, inlaw, uncle or tribesman or classmate. YEt you cannot face him , even at your village meeting.
NONE! When those people you allude to come home from abuja, they don't attend village meetings! So they are not my brothers or sisters. They will be lynched by the angry villagers!

NA for Nairaland you go dey blow grammar and throw abuse and champion assaults on each other. Your problem dey for your village, go cure am then come back make we move on,
NA  LIE! Remove police and army protection from those people and you will see what will happen!

Wow, are you serious? Okay, let me not argue, no arguing needed. Just look at the poll in this thread: https://www.nairaland.com/nigeria/topic-299456.0.html
Here is the result again:

Those for division - 71.2%
Those against division - 28.8%

My interpretation:

This survey is by no means scientific, but it reflects the views of the most active members of our society. No one comes to NL Politics section unless he/she is really interested in the politics of Nigeria. Mark my word, there are top members of the Nigerian ruling class on NL. They mask their identity of course, but they are here. So, that poll is important.

The question of whether to split Nigeria up or not has not even occured to millions out there. There are more concerned about breaking out of their situation, in their personal lives, than they are with this bogus message some have caged their minds up with.
And I say that is a lie my friend! Millions of people in Nigeria think about that, which is why MASSOB was able to mobilize millions of Igbos through a sit at home protest. The Niger delta people think about that too (even if only from the resource control perspective). The islamic extremists in the north still dream of forcibly converting all Southerners to Islam. And the rest of Nigerians are worried about what would happen should Igbos leave Nigeria, which is why the name Biafra attracts so much vitriol.

Are you prepared to put that to vote? You'll be shocked by the result! In a country will little or no credible statistics I'm not surprised you think that.
The barrel of the gun from the center is the only thing still keeping Nigeria one. But other barrels (from the regions ,eg MEND and BOKO HARAM) are springing up fast these days to challenge the center. It shouldn't be that way, but the LORDS OF NIGERIA only understand violence. They're afraid of dialogues or conferences because those things bring out the truth and enable the situation to be resolved (which may see them losing their corrupt power).
Which is why AREWA is opposing the Nigerian Peoples Constitution put foward by the CHANGE NIGERIA group.
All I would say is that people who are strong believers in One Nigeria should go and advise AREWA to have a change of heart. Else, trouble dey for land o!
PoliticsRe: Greatest Nigerian War General Of All Time by Onlytruth(m): 5:19pm On Sep 13, 2009
Generals should be evaluated on the basis of bravery in battle and superior military strategic and tactical thinking in defense of the country against FOREIGN enemies. To evaluate Nigerian Generals on the basis of their performance in the civil war is disingenious to say the least. In fact I would go a step further to say that the Biafran "Generals" are the ones to be so evalutated because they fought to defend Biafra against a foreign enemy -Nigeria. For as long as the Nigerians believed that they were fighting against fellow Nigerians in "Biafra", then how can one evaluate that?
I want to see Nigerian Generals evaluated on their performance against Cameroun in Bakassi. In that assessment, only one General could really be evaluated because he was the only one brave enough to even attempt a war with Cameroun. That General was General SANI ABACHA.

Just this week, a group of patriotic Nigerians( really decent and honorable fellows, including those who repented from earlier erroneous positions) called CHANGE NIGERIA came up boldly to demand a truly Nigerian peoples constitution. Decent and honest Nigerians toiled for years to produce a document which (if allowed to see the light of day) could snowball into a genuine constitution for a normal and stable country. Guess who just mobilized against it? Yes the one and only NORTH (AREWA). Aisha, I think your project will go far if you begin with your people. Charity begins at home. That is a very incisive question. It depends, can you be loyal to a parent who has not looked after you and doesn't care whether you live or die?
Some people have actually killed abusive parents (I'm not supporting it but it happens). Parents have no rights to destroy their children and no responsible parent does that.  That is what the "forster parents" systems solve. It protects children from abusive parents. Who will protect us from Nigeria! huh

PoliticsRe: Are You Loyal To Nigeria Or Your Ethnicity? by Onlytruth(m): 1:21am On Sep 12, 2009
To further demonstrate my point, let there be free and fair elections in Nigeria for once. Let that happen for 10 years and let's see who will be where.
If the North want that today, it can happen. But IS IT IN THEIR INTEREST? That is the big question.

So I don't believe in the Nigerian game. It may be more like a Northern Nigerian Game!
PoliticsRe: Are You Loyal To Nigeria Or Your Ethnicity? by Onlytruth(m): 1:16am On Sep 12, 2009
Beaf:
The 1% of the population who understand the "Nigerian game" are far from tribalistic. Indeed, they put their pockets before both nation and ethnicity.

Ethnicity is used as both a power base and a vicious divide and rule weapon against the remaining 99%. We hear about Afenifere, Arewa and Ohaneze; they are all fucking tools of the elite 1%.

Obviously, if we want to progress and overthrow the status quo, we are better off seeing one another as fellow humans.
Beaf I respect you a lot but I disagree with you on this. I don't believe there is really a NIGERIAN GAME, and I can prove it.  That theory of Nigerian game is what people who are desperate to keep Nigeria one have been peddling and it is a lie. We in the East  want progress and fast! We are desperate for progress but Abuja and the north won't let us choose our own governors. We want to demonstrate that it is possible to develop (Ngige proved it in Anambra State, Peter Obi is proving it now), but those who want to prove that all Nigerians are corrupt and the same won't let us. What we have is a Hausa/Fulani and to some extent Yoruba imposed socio-political system pervading the Nigerian space. I would exonerate the Yoruba to some extent though (at least for the sake of Jakande and Fashola).
There is nothing wrong with being a Nigerian and Igbo, but if Nigeria wants to kill the Igbo in me just to make me "Nigerian", then Nigeria will have to give way to Biafra.
I am Igbo first.
PoliticsRe: Arewa Consultative Forum: Do Not Touch The Military 1999 Constitution! by Onlytruth(m): 9:14pm On Sep 11, 2009
Again isn't it counterintuitive for the AFC to argue that the solution to the current unviable states structure is the continuation of the status quo? In other words, the system of reliance on the Federal government is in Northern interest!
In other words, any state that aggressively pursues self reliance is not acting in the North's (read Federal government's) interest. Do you now see why Ngige suffered in Anambra State , why Chris Uba is still heavily guarded and protected and why Peter Obi may be rigged out? People (especially fair minded Southerners) need to keep their eyes on this almight ball - THE MAIN ISSUE -Self reliance is anti-north. Self reliance is anti-north! That is why those of us who believe in self determination are skeptical about the nation called Nigeria!

The Northerners can go ahead with whatever arrangement they deem fit for their people and future. But when they want everybody in Nigeria to tow the same line, they cross a line.

una don hear of goat wey like christmas day? this is no surprise.

Did anyone read the Press Release from the CHANGE NIGERIA group? I would go a step further to say this, anyone who believes that Nigeria is one country is either in denial or merely naive (I don't want to use harsh words here). What the CHANGE NIGERIA group called for is a system whereby every region (those who agree to form each region) should have its own constitution. After that, the regions would then come together to create a Federal constitution. "Progress"  or "Success" in the south (east, west and south) might mean western education, or a thriving private business; while the same in the north might mean islamic education or conducting the hajj or marrying more wives, or landing a Federal government job, or anything else but western education or personal/private initiative and drive.  I can go on.

The issue here is that the current constitution is DOOMED TO FAIL because of this dissimilarity in perception between the North and the South. My concern is that it may take 100 years before the North can agree to a workable constitution, a timeline any sane southerner cannot afford. Does the North have the right to hold everybody to its own definition of unity and world-view? He who makes peaceful change impossible makes violent change inevitable.

larez:
If the South tries to secede now, there will be mass starvation if the North refuses to send Agriculture produce to the South. And of course you know that all the Southern owned properties in Abuja will be seized, when Abuja becomes Arewa capital city. Shipping lanes will also become closed if he North strategically places a few mines around the lanes leading to Oil facilities. Considering that Angola is a safer location to source oil, you might as well forget the Oil industry of the south helping to raise funds.

What I am saying here is that Nigeria has become a Nation that has all our collective interests intertwined. Our energies need to be focused on resolving issues and differences instead of the senseless noise about secession. It will definitely be a losing proposition for the South with the exception of Lagos which will remain non-aligned. lol.
We've been trying to do that for 50 years while other sane countries have raced ahead of us, so I don't share your optimism! The Change Nigeria group agrees with me!

I just cannot understand how these people spreading secessionist propaganda can even catch a following. They are obviously clueless about logistics an the planning it takes to attempt such a move. Northerners are about the most humble of Nigerians and they are also very focused and come to concessions amongst each other  faster than Southerners can muster. We in the South are always blinded with selfish interests and hardly see further than the tips of our noses with our current crop of leaders. It is to every Nigerian's advantage to intermarry and make sure that we don't end up hating each other. This only serves the present crop of politicians.

The miseries that the average Nigerian suffers transcends tribal affiliation.
E be like say someone turned you down on the basis of your tribe grin

Our problems are much more serious than frivolities like marriage and the lot. In fact inter-tribal marriages might even worsen our situation (crucify me for this view, I don't care!). We are talking of Nigeria where people can't even own up to their own tribal origins for fear of marginalization. I read somewhere that Adolf Hitler's father was a Jew!

Having said that, I think you are simply scared stiff about Nigeria's disintegration. You have to be more open minded about the situation though. You may be scared of Nigeria's disintegration while I am scared about Nigeria continuing this way for another 50 years! We are on opposite sides my friend! You are rational and I am rational too. So I agree with the Change Nigeria group! Now back to the topic!

PRESS STATEMENT

MALICIOUS ADVERTISEMENT AGAINST THE GOVERNMENT AND PEOPLE OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA BY SONY COROPORATION

The attention of the Federal Government of Nigeria has been drawn to an advertisement by Sony Corporation on the internet which from all indications is designed to portray Nigeria in bad light in an effort for Sony to market her products.

1. The advert in question currently circulating on youtube.com and facebook.com and other international websites creates the impression that Nigerians hardly do genuine business. This insinuation is in bad faith and unacceptable.

2. The Government and the good people of Nigeria reject this unwarranted attack on the reputation and image of the country. The government sees this as an attempt by Sony Corporation to undermine Nigeria’s business interest around the world.

3. It is on record that Sony Corporation has operated in Nigeria since the country’s independence and has enjoyed tremendous patronage from Nigerians at home and abroad. Over these years, there is no established record that the company has recorded any major incidence of scam or fraud by Nigerians that warrants its deliberate campaign against the country’s image.

4. While Nigeria accepts or concedes that there are few criminal minded people within her population just like any other country including Japan the home country of Sony Corporation. The Federal Government of Nigeria has as a matter of policy put in place institutions and mechanisms to rid the country of any form of fraudulent practices. Nigeria therefore does not see the basis to single out the country as an example in that infamous advertisement.

5. In the light of the above, the Federal Government of Nigeria requests Sony Corporation to immediately withdraw that advertisement from circulation.

6. Nigeria also demands an unconditional apology from Sony Corporation for this deliberate negative campaign against the country’s image and reputation. The apology must be given the same measure of publicity by Sony Corporation in all channels where the unfortunate adverts were aired.

7. The Federal Government of Nigeria wishes to assure all genuine investors around the world that Nigeria remains a major investment destination and a country where most businesses thrives in trust, good faith, competition, competence and integrity.

Civil War Genocides
The genocide of Anioma by Gen. Murtala Mohammed and Major Gen. Ibrahim Haruna (Retd), during the Nigerian-Biafran War started on the 21 of September, 1967 on the recapture of Benin City from the Biafrans sweeping Asaba, Ogwashi-Uku, Ibusa, Otutu and Ishiagu, Igbodo, Aboh and Ushisha communities but the massacres carried out in Asaba remains the most severe and unforgettable in which mostly helpless women, youths and children were killed in vapidity by the federal troops.

Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Retd) the then Head of State would later apologise to the Igbo community, while Major-General Ibrahim Haruna, the General officer Commanding (GOC) Two Division of the Army during the Civil War while testifying at the Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission Panel aka Oputa Panel held in 2004, insistently maintained that he had no regret for the Asaba massacres in which the Igbo were killed by his troops since it was motivated by sense of duty to protect the unity of the country, he stated this under cross examination by Ohanaeze Ndiigbo group.

The man had serious character flaws and was mentally unstable somehow. How do you commit mass murder in planning a first coup to pull your people out of Nigeria, and then turn around within 1 year to commit genocide against another group for attempting the same thinghuh?

Any form of discrimination is deplorable and should never be supported. It even becomes worse when the people concerned are already Nigerian citizens (whether born in Nigeria or naturalized). If all Nigerians are required to go to Abuja to renew their passport, then fair enough. But don't split Nigerians into "natural-borns" and "naturalized" in processing passports.
