Matters Arising From the UNIZIK Vice Chancellorship Crisis

Dr. Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh was named the official Vice Chancellor of the citadel of education on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, by Amb. Greg Ozuomba Mbadiwe, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka.

This was carried out amid legal actions brought by roughly three professional associations in the country's competent courts: the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNIZIK Chapter; and the Medical and Dental Consultants' Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), Nnewi Branch.

This indicates that the blessings required for Dr. Odoh's rapid climb were not bestowed at his "election" or "selection" into the esteemed position. For example, MDCAN is set up for conflict because its eligible members were denied the right to vote and subjected to discrimination. The case is still pending. Dr. Odoh was created in a poisonous, hostile, and discordant setting as UNIZIK VC.

The past events leading to the current situation at the institution will be recalled. Upon the conclusion of Professor Charles Esimone's term as the immediate past VC, he appointed Professor Joseph Ikechebelu as the Deputy Vice Chancellor, DVC (Administration), after a fair election and approval process by UNIZIK Senators. This complied with the guidelines set forth by the Federal Ministry of Education and the University Act.

The then Federal Minister of Education, however, did not issue a letter of appointment to Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu in the absence of a UNIZIK Governing Council, either by act of commission or omission.

Knowing full well that the acting position would end in six months and a full-fledged VC would be elected, Amb. Mbadiwe, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, dismissed the current Acting VC instead of providing him with a confirmatory letter when the Governing Council was established. This act of impunity is quickly becoming the norm in the nation.

Therefore, Amb. Mbadiwe replaced Prof. Ikechebelu with Prof. Carol Arinze-Umeobi in a humorous, shameful, disparaging, and contentious way, enforcing his authority as the Pro-Chancellor and upsetting the calm and harmony that prevailed in the academic community.

The letter of her appointment was reported to have been handed over to her at the parking lot in front of the University's Administrative Block. This provoked and spurred the Students Union Government (SUG) to hold a demonstration.

Although it was done correctly, the procedure was incorrect. From then on, intrigues, manipulation, discrimination, and maneuverings became the norm in the process of choosing or appointing a VC for UNIZIK until Dr. Odoh was announced as the organization's substantive VC.

Dr. Odoh works as a university employee and is a reader. In addition to never having been a department head, faculty dean, director, provost, or DVC, he has never achieved the status of professor.

This desperation provided justification for the discrimination against some candidates for the same position, which was reported in an editorial on page 33 of the Vanguard newspaper on Thursday, September 12, 2024, to discourage prospective candidates from running for office. The unpopular Vanguard publication's content sparked outcries, abuses, condemnations, and other harsh comments.

Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), one of the group of professionals who's members were discriminated against, went to court seeking redress to claim her right. Association of Senior Staff of Universities, ASSU, protested to express their grievances. The university environment in recent times appears unfriendly, engulfed with toxicity.

In his acceptance speech, Dr. Odoh proudly stated that he is the first UNIZIK alumnus to reach that great height, having earned his Ph.D., first and second degrees, and other degrees from the university. Similarly, Prof. Chinedu Onyeizugbe, the previous director of UNIZIK Business School, congratulated the controversially elected VC and took satisfaction in becoming "the first alumnus (of UNIZIK) to hold this prestigious position."

Contrary to this assertion, and as if in response to Prof. Onyeizugbe’s stand point, Prof. P. I. Okafor asked, “Is being an alumnus of UNIZIK one of the conditions/qualifications? Are we extrapolating the spirit of ’emilokan’ into the university?, he further inquired.”Are we telling the non-alumni professors to go to hell? Shouldn’t we be bothered about the flouted due processes and obvious impunity in disregarding all protestations against this selection process?

Any research undertaking that begins with preconceived notions is tantamount to academic irresponsibility. Every condition included in the advertisement was modeled to fit a specific outcome, and the outcome of this VC selection was known and predetermined. Plagiarism is evident in this. The anticipated response to the protests will be "Go to court."

Breaking: Suspended Lagos LG Chairman Writes Assembly, Seeks Lawmakers' Forgiveness

Suspended chairman of the Alimosho Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State, Jelili Sulaimon, has pleaded with the state Assembly men for forgiveness, nearly a month after he was axed for non-compliance, defiance and unyielding attitude to the legislative House.

In a 'Letter of Apology' personally signed by the embattled chairman, addressed to Speaker Mudashiru Obasa and read on the floor of the House on Tuesday, Jelili agreed that his actions may have caused disrespect to the House.

While expressing regret, he promised to henceforth show maximum respect to the House and work closely with the legislators.

The suspended chairman also informed the House, through a letter by his lawyers, that he had withdrawn the suit he filed against the Assembly before a Federal High Court, Abuja.

"I am writing to express my most sincere and heartfelt apology for any actions or inactions, misrepresentation or conduct on my part that may have contributed to the recent misunderstanding between myself and the esteemed Lagos State House of Assembly under your leadership.

"Upon reflection, I realised that my conduct and certain decisions I made might have been perceived as disrespectful or contrary to the standard of leadership and the mutual respect that defines the relationship between the Assembly and the local government leadership.

"This was never my intention. I deeply regret any discomfort or displeasure this may have caused your personality as well as the entire House.

"I have always held the Lagos State House of Assembly and your esteemed office in particular, in the highest regard.

"Any action or miscommunication that may have suggested otherwise was an unfortunate oversight on my part. I am committed to fostering a more constructive and respectful relationship going forward.

"Once again, I sincerely apologise for any inconveniences caused by my actions or inactions," the letter read as Jelili promised to work closely with the House henceforth.

The House is yet to debate the letter.

Federal University Gusau Debunks Staffer Claim by Dr. Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh Amid Unizik Vice Chancellor-Ship Saga

....As the bone of contention as regards the inauguration of Dr. Bernard remains sketchy; due process boycotted.

It should be noted that the Federal University GUSAU in response to the academic disclosure quest by UNIZIK administration debunk claims that the now contending Ag VC of UNIZIK Dr Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh was a staff of its Federal University as seen in the communique above.

The intense attempts to install Dr. Ifeanyi Bernard Odoh to serve as vice chancellor at Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, as well as the issue surrounding the appointment of a temporary vice chancellor, have hit a rough patch.

Meanwhile, some lecturers are allegedly discriminated, sidelined while some intimidated, coerced and bribed. It is alleged that Dr.Odoh has been claiming to be a professor in order to occupy the hallowed position but is alleged to be a mere reader and an associate professor. About three professional groups like Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN), have put up litigation challenging the delisting their members from contesting for the vice chancellor-ship.

A careful analysis carried out by a member of the University Community on the cause of disparities in Nnamdi Azikwe University (UNIZIK), shows that the situation has taken a new dimension with the aim of stifling the once conducive environment good for academic pursuit.

Further pointers by the member of UNIZIK university states that:

The problem with the Ag VC appointment is that appropriate process was not followed, which undoubtedly gave the university a peculiar method of carrying out the right and simple task of electing and selecting a vice chancellor.

First, the Senate members would be asked to remain composed by the acting successor to the former VC, as well as any other gentlemen and devout individual. Do you want others to be violent or do you anticipate him to be violent?Students were gathered by the Students' Union Government (SUG) to express their disapproval of the Ag VC that the Chairman of Council had chosen.People are complaining in writing that due process was not adhered to. Did the female professor decide not to take office today because of that? No! It was seen in the video on the UNIZIK Facebook wall.

Second, to buttress on level playing field as discussed by some; Universities is governed by acts which includes outlined due process for installation governing bodies. It is believed that; the Federal University Act in Nigeria, does not include the age range of 66 to under 70.

Meanwhile, the former DVC in UNIABUJA who is a 41-year old lady has been confirmed and appointed by UNIABUJA Governing Council. Is UNIABUJA not same federal university with UNIZIK.

In a letter to the council chairman, NUC urged him to abide by the university's regulations. He was adamant, though. I dare state that under Prof. Ilochi Okafor's leadership as VC, former VC Prof. BC Egboka served as the previous DVC (administration). In those days, there was no council. The Governing Council corrected the letter when Prof. Egboka, Minister of Education, was appointed Acting VC after Prof. Ilochi Okafor transferred the leadership to him.

Prof. Egboka completed his five years in office, for a total of six years, while serving in an acting capacity for a year during which the Council was established and the proper procedure for VC appointment was followed.

Thirdly, the outgone VC Prof. Charles Esimone followed the due process of electing the Ag VC (Prof. Joseph Ikechebelu) before leaving office according to NUC, Federal Ministry of Education directives. As of June 3, 2024, only Prof. Joe Ikechebelu was the DVC in UNIZIK. So, the mantle of leadership fell on him. In UNN, there were three DVCs, and voting took place at the floor of the senate, which produced the present Acting VC in UNN.
The Federal Minister of Education refused to write a letter that appoints Prof. Joe Ikechebelu as the Acting VC in the absence of Council.

Since the council had been established, it was appropriate to issue the letter of appointment to Prof. Joe Ikechebelu in order to correct the UNIZIK Senate's mistake.The outgoing VC had no authority to issue the letter of appointment.

Fourth, VC/Ag VC is the chairman of the senate at any Nigerian university. An emergency senate meeting was set for July 19, 2024, according to a note in UNIZIK, however it was later moved to July 24, 2024. Additionally, a Council meeting that was originally planned on July 20, 2024, was moved to July 29, 2024.

The agenda for these meetings was Appointment of Ag VC.
Then 35 professors wrote on Friday evening of July 19, 2024, under the name of the NAU Professors Forum that they held an emergency meeting of the Senate and issued a letter to the Chairman of Council submitting the names of two former DVCs as those qualified to be appointed as the Acting VC.
Who chaired that meeting, and who was the secretary?

The Chairman of Council turned around and summoned a Council meeting to be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024, which ended in a stalemate, but the Chairman and his other four external members left the Council chamber, went downstairs at the car park, and issued the letter in the vehicle to another person.

Is it right for the Chairman of Council NOT to liaise with the former DVC for harmonized dates to have held those senate and council meetings, respectively? How can he be dictating to the Ag Registrar of the University when and when not to schedule meetings? It is a mess, believe you me.

In a bid to build development strategy in the correspondent chapel wing of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Lagos, the chapel had made it a point of reference to advocate and sort for prominent matrons and patrons to move its affairs into great strides and enhance development while fulfilling purposes unachieved in times past. As such, Elder Dede Kalu is included among the remarkable few for his diligence in business and vast knowledge, which serves as an integral input to improve the well-being of the chapel. 

Dede, who expressed a warm welcome towards the visiting excos, revealed he operates a well-grounded marketing service including radio, television, and publication marketing as a strategy to promote businesses all over the nation and has recorded successes so far. He mentioned that a certain incidence many years back involving a young lady who, while crossing an expressway, got hit by a car due to her inability to cross swiftly on heels had created the initiative for the heel competition. 

Dede said the 7th edition of the 4inch Heel Race event is upcoming; meanwhile, the turnout of participants over the years has been encouraging, and winners of the previous events got financial rewards, good public acknowledgement, and exposure. He noted that the criteria to choose participants cut across races, status, and education. Secondary school graduates, university undergraduates, and graduates are mostly included.

LCDAs Have Come To Stay, Lagos Speaker Says as Assembly Holds Public Hearing On Proposed Local Govt Law

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has said there are no plans to scrap the 37 Local Government Development Areas (LCDAs) of the state.

Dr. Obasa, represented by Deputy Speaker Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, said this at a second public hearing on the bill to amend the Local Government Administration law of the state on Thursday.

"We are gathered here to consider and reflect on a bill that seeks to further enhance how our third tier of government should be administered.

"The LCDAs have come to stay and they would remain so by the special grace of God. Nobody is killing the LCDAs. Instead, we have come to say here is the Supreme Court judgement; how do we go about it? I know we all have the interest of this state at heart.

"Did we follow the right part in creating the LCDAs? The answer is 'yes'. So at this point, it is a call for every Lagosian to rise up and protect the LCDAs by reaching out to all our representatives at the national level.

"Our representatives and senators should lobby their colleagues there. We will continue to do our part and we are doing it to ensure that the 37 LCDAs are listed in the constitution," the Speaker said.

He recalled that just about two weeks ago, people were also gathered to deliberate on the electoral bill for the Local government election which he said is the first right step before the House could go into how the local governments should function.

"This Bill has passed the preliminary stages and the House is hereby subjecting it to public appraisal in our transparent convention. At this stage, we subject the bill to public assessment, gathering public observations and thoughts to reflect on them in the next stage of the bill.

"The bill is seeking to consolidate all laws on local government administration. The law, when passed, will allow the local governments function optimally with strict adherence to the rule of law and separation of powers," he added.

The Speaker stressed that the bill also made mention of four-year tenure for the elective offices in the local government, which, according to him, has finally removed the ambiguity of the past as regards tenure of these elective officers.

The bill, he said, has elaborated all that needs to be done for an effective administration of the local governments including declaration of assets, nomination of a chairman, removal of a chairman or vice chairman, discharge of functions of the chairman, local government area supervisors appointees, executive powers of the local government, street naming and many more.

Section 4(3) of the Bill states: "The 20 local governments shall have designated local council Development Areas as listed in the First Schedule to this law for effective and efficient local government administration in the State.

Section 4(1) of the Bill further states: "There shall be 37 Local Council Development Areas in the State with the names specified in Schedule II of the Creation of local government (Amendments) of 2004."

Speaking after an overview by Hon. Noheem Adams, Majority Leader of the House, Lagos-based lawyer, Muiz Banire (SAN) identified some clauses in the Bill that needed further inputs.

Banire argued: "The import of the Supreme Court judgement is simple. The State Governor does not have the power over council chairmen, if any council chairman misbehaves, it is the councillors that can decide on what to do."

He also advised that section 38 of the Bill should be expunged, noting "It is no longer legal for the Ministry of Local Government to be issuing guidelines for local governments."

However, Banire was countered by former Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Kolawole Taiwo, who said: "The constitution gives power to the State House of Assembly to create local government, the law has been tested, our LCDAs have been in existence but only not listed.

"Nobody can say the law is not in existence, I was the Majority Leader as at then. You are saying the House should not have the power to do some things again; we need to be very careful. We know some governors are making nonsense of the local governments but Lagos is an exemption."

Corroborating the position of Taiwo, another former Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Funmilayo Tejuoso said: "When you have a child that does not have a name, does it mean that the child is dead? It simply means that the LCDAs are still existing. The Supreme Court has recognised them, we are only waiting for the constitution to reflect the LCDAs."

She therefore stated that the LCDAs should continue to exist, noting "We shouldn't throw away the baby with the bath water."

Also speaking, Imam Ibrahim Tijani from Itire-Ikate said he supported the continued existence of the LCDAs.

A stakeholder, Ajose Agbejoye, suggested that elections into local government councils should start six months before the expiration of the four-year term of a current administration so that electoral issues would have been settled before the swearing-in of a new chairman.

President of Greater Lagos Initiative, Adeniyi Olutimehin also appealed to the House to allow the LCDAs to continue to function irrespective of whatever amendments it makes to the Bill.

Lagos Assembly Intervenes in Model College Fee Hike as Parents Protest

Following a protest by some Lagos parents over the increase in the boarding fees of the state's model colleges, the Lagos State House of Assembly has directed the Chairman of its House Committee on Education, Hon. Mosunmola Sangodara, to invite all the concerned stakeholders and report back within a week.

This directive came after the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, met with the protesters at the Assembly gate.

The fees were hiked from N35,000 to N100,000 for the 2024/2025 session which commenced on September 15, 2024.

During plenary on Monday, Obasa said that he had to intervene when he heard the crowd chanting protest songs at the entrance to the Assembly.

He advised the parents to remain calm, assuring them that the matter would be addressed.

Hon. Sangodara (Surulere II) informed the House that the committee had already engaged the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders.

Hon. Shabi Adekola (Lagos Mainland II) also explained that during a meeting with the officials of the Ministry of Education and others, it was agreed that the parents should continue paying N35,000 pending further review of the fees.

Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu (Eti-Osa Constituency II) pointed out that the increment was primarily related to students’ feeding costs. He, however, urged the government to explore ways to ease the financial burden on parents and offer assistance where necessary.

In his contribution, Hon. Bonu Solomon (Badagry I) added that parents had raised concerns that students unable to pay the new fee were not allowed to purchase food within the school premises adding that this had further complicated the situation.

The House is expected to await the report from the education committee before taking further steps.

Lagos Assembly To Hold Second Public Hearing On LG Administration Bill

- invites Attorney-General for interpretation of Supreme Court judgement

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday agreed to conduct another public hearing on a bill that seeks to review the Local Government Administration law of the state.

The House also invited the Attorney-General of the State, Lawal Pedro, for an interpretation of the recent Supreme Court judgement on financial autonomy for local governments.

The resolutions came at a sitting presided over by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

Dr. Obasa said the review of the Local Government Administration law is not aimed at scrapping the LCDAs but to further strengthen them.

"I agree on the need for us to schedule a second allotted day for the public hearing," the Speaker said while adding that he had been inundated with calls by people who wanted to know the fate of the LCDAs.

"We are not scrapping the LDCAs. Rather, what we are trying to do is to look at the recent Supreme Court judgement in terms of Lagos and local governments joint account and fashion out a way where the parent local governments and the LDCAs work together without the LDCAs shortchanged," he added.

The Speaker also agreed on the need to work for the formal listing of the LCDAs by the National Assembly.

"Kano has 44 local governments and out of Kano, Jigawa was created and has 27," he said as he suggested a review of the revenue sharing formula by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

Chairman of the Committee on Local Government, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, had, while giving a report on the public hearing earlier conducted by the committee, said that many of the stakeholders invited for the event could not make it.

He attributed the poor attendance to the weather condition of the day just as he prayed the House to approve a second allotted day for the exercise.

Supporting Hon. Okanlawon's request, his colleague, Hon. Ladi Ajomale said: "A lot of people are saying they do not understand what is going on and maybe the government is trying to wipe some people out of the local government system," he said.

He also called for a liaison and better collaboration with the National Assembly with the aim of making the upper legislature understand why the LDCAs should be listed as substantive local governments.

On his part, Hon. Desmond Elliot noted that because of the size of Lagos in terms of population and its economic importance to Nigeria, it was imperative to work for the listing of the LCDAs.

"Anambra state has 21 local governments and it is nowhere close to what Lagos has in terms of resources, economic importance and dividends of democracy," he said.

My name is Prince Amb (Dr) Adedipe Dauda Ewenla, The Chairman United Abule Egba/Awori Forum and the MD/CEO Adedas Group. It is my honor and privilege welcome you all and appreciate those who have contributed in making this Year Abule Egba day a possiblity .

In a recent analysis made by Leadership Initiative For Youth Empowerment (LIFE), it is said that unsafe abortion remains a significant public health issue in Nigeria, contributing heavily to maternal morbidity and mortality. However, the federal government can curtail maternal morbidity through improved access to healthcare, community education, and partnerships. 

LIFE noted that despite advancements in healthcare, many women, especially those in rural and underserved communities, face limited access to safe reproductive health services. The consequences of these limitations are severe, as unsafe abortion procedures continue to threaten the health and lives of countless women across the country.

Unsafe abortion, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a procedure for terminating an unintended pregnancy either by individuals lacking the necessary skills or in an environment that does not conform to minimal medical standards.

LIFE's analysis in understanding unsafe abortions in Nigeria reveals that restrictive abortion laws permitting abortion only to save a woman’s life have forced many women to seek clandestine and unsafe procedures. These procedures are often carried out by untrained individuals in non-sterile environments, increasing the risk of complications.

More also, maternal morbidity due to unsafe abortion in Nigeria is alarmingly high. It is said that each year, approximately 1.25 million abortions are estimated to occur in the country, with a significant portion being unsafe. Studies indicate that about 40% of women who undergo abortions experience complications that may include severe hemorrhaging, infections, damage to the reproductive organs, and, in severe cases, infertility or death.

Furthermore, several socio-economic and cultural factors contribute to the prevalence of unsafe abortion practices in Nigeria, like;
Lack of access to reproductive health services like family planning services, contraceptives, and safe abortion care, particularly in rural areas. This inequacy leaves them vulnerable to unwanted pregnancies and unsafe procedures.

More factors, including stigmatization and legal barriers, poverty and low education levels, and inadequate sex education, are also factors contributing to unsafe abortions.

Meanwhile, the health implications of abortion vary and have severe physical and psychological consequences for women in Nigeria. Complications such as severe bleeding, infections, and organ damage are common. Women who survive these complications often face long-term health issues, including chronic pelvic pain, infertility, and increased vulnerability to subsequent high-risk pregnancies. The psychological impact, such as trauma and anxiety, also poses a significant health burden.

LIFE inputs that efforts to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality due to unsafe abortion in Nigeria must focus on:
Lack of Access to Reproductive Health Services: Expanding access to safe and legal abortion services, postabortion care, and contraceptive options is essential.
Health facilities, particularly in rural areas, should be equipped with skilled professionals and necessary resources.

Legal and Policy Reforms: Reforming Nigeria’s restrictive abortion laws could help provide women with safer options and reduce reliance on unsafe practices. Advocacy efforts should aim at creating an enabling legal environment for women’s reproductive rights.

Community Awareness and Education Programs: Increasing awareness about the dangers of unsafe abortion and providing comprehensive sex education are crucial. Programs should target both men and women to reduce stigma and misinformation while promoting family planning and reproductive health services.

Partnerships with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs): Collaborating with NGOs and international organizations can help provide additional support, training, and funding to improve reproductive health services.

In conclusion, LIFE added that unsafe abortion remains a leading cause of maternal morbidity in Nigeria. Addressing the issue requires a multi-faceted approach that combines legal reform, improved healthcare access, community education, and partnerships. By tackling the root causes and providing women with safe reproductive health options, Nigeria can significantly reduce maternal morbidity and protect the health and well-being of its women.

Lagos State Govt Collaborates with UNICEF to Sensitize On Non-Polio Supplemental Immunization Activities ( SIAs) For Nigerians

The Ministry of Information & Strategy partners UNICEF for a media orientation dialogue on non-polio Supplemental Immunization Activities (SIAs) for Nigerian Citizens from ages 9 months to 44 years. UNICEF is also supporting the Lagos state government to ensure that all critical stake holders are on board including religious leaders, traditionalists and the grassroots to create awareness, enhance and sustain the acceptance of vaccines.

The sensitization program held on Monday, October 14th, 2024 in Lagos is meant to create awareness on the essence of safeguarding health by Immunization which is the first line of defence in strengthening the health indices of a family, the healthcare system and the society as a whole. To this effect, an immunization exercise will commence on Saturday, October 19, 2024, in all 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas ( LCDAs) in Lagos.

The yellow booster vaccination exercise is targeted to reach 85 percent of Lagosians from nine months to 44 years of age as organised by the Ministry of Information and Strategy and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF),

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information & Strategy, Directors of the Min of Info and strategy and LSPHCB, Program Managers, other Immunization Partners and the press in attendance had an in depth analysis on sustainable strategies to create awareness especially amongst persons misinformed on the importance of immunization.

The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Information and Strategy Dr Abimbola Bowale told pressmen that disseminating accurate and impactful information is pivotal in our collective effort to ensure that every child receive life saving immunizations with no one left behind. Says the influence we weild in shaping public perception and behavior cannot be overstated. Implores the media So it is important that the media spread this news so that people can access this vaccine.

She further stated that:

"Non-polio SIAs are a critical component of our strategy to protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases. The vaccines to be given include Measles,Yellow Fever, and other routine immunizations including HPV."

" The goal is to achieve herd immunity and the only way to do so, is to ensure that at least 95% of the eligible population receive the measles vaccine and 80% of the eligible population receive the yellow fever vaccine.
These activities are not merely operational tasks; they are life-saving interventions that contribute to the health and well-being of our future generations."

" By reaching out to communities with compelling and accurate narratives, you help us drive home the importance of immunizations and dispel any myths or misconceptions."

She urges the media to harness various platforms to amplify the importance of immunization and create a stealthy ground for a vast majority to partake. Vital Information made available to the public about the benefits of these supplemental immunizations and the safety protocols in place can significantly boost participation and trust in these health initiatives.

The media collaboration, is paramount to ensure that no child is left behind, that every mother is reassured, and that every community understands the indispensable value of these immunization efforts. The shared goal as partners in the fight, is a healthier, stronger Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole free from the scourge of preventable diseases, she added.

Mrs Aderonke Akinola Akinwole, the Social & Behavioural Change Specialist UNICEF stated that the media orientation is a call to action by media practitioners to help popularize vaccine's safety and acceptance . She noted that in times past, the populace has shown reluctance due rumours, misinformation and disinformation.

Via media collaboration, the awareness will gain a vast momentum reaching depths, nooks and crannies of the state by means of various media platforms to disseminate the right information leading to increase in vaccine trust and acceptance,Aderonke said.

Aderonke further stated that Lagos state government will be launching the Non_Polio supplemental immunisation activities, assures the people of Lagos that the right health workers with uniforms for identification purposes will be put in charge of vaccination.

Aderonke stated that, as an integrated campaign, a lot of vaccines will be administered including different antigens. There will be routine immunisation for children under 2 years of age, measles vaccine for 9 months to 5 years old, yellow fever vaccine from 9 months to 44 years old as well as HPB vaccination for girls which prevents cancer and can be found at primary health care centers. Noted that it is important for parents to make sure their children who falls within these categories gets vaccinated.

More also, girls within the age 9 to 14 can access the HPB vaccines for free from now to December 2024; From 2025, the access to HPB vaccines will be made available for f only 9 year old girls for free, Aderonke affirms.

Physically challenged tricycle snatchers arrested in Lagos

An attempt to commit an offence with snatching of tricycle leads to the arrest of two suspects while one fled.

On October 10,2024 at about 3pm, a complainant who is physically challenged and a tricycle rider reported at Denton Police Station that on October 9th at about 8pm he picked up three passengers at General Pay Ajah namely; Mande Bello 'M' aged 30, Samsudeen Usman 'M' aged 23 and Gazali 'M' all physically challenged to Boson Roundabout Oyingbo.

The complainant( tricycle rider) further stated that the physically challenged passengers begged cut journey short and instead alight at the Third mainland bridge intersection. The driver stated that he declined but later agreed to their plea.

The complainant however stated that while the 3 snatchers alighted at the proposed intersection, Mande Bello brought out a cable wire to strangulate him and that he wrestled them and forcefully turned back to Okobaba with two of the suspects, Mande Bello and Samsudeen Usman while Gazali escaped at the scene.

On the receipt of the case, two suspects were arrested and their statement recorded. Preliminary investigation revealed that the three suspects specializes in snatching tricycle from unsuspecting members of the public in Lagos state.

Investigation is ongoing and effort is being made to apprehend the other fleeing suspect.

We Must Build A Virile Legislature For The Future, Speaker Obasa Says

Speaker Mudashiru Obasa of the Lagos State House of Assembly, on Sunday, counselled members of the House to strengthen the legislative arm of government ahead of the future.

Dr. Obasa gave the advice in Abeokuta, Ogun State at the opening of a three-day budget retreat for lawmakers and staff of the House with the theme: 'Optimising the legislature's power of the Purse' for effective service delivery in Lagos State'.

The Speaker challenged the lawmakers to be committed in their legislative duties as they must leave lasting legacies for the future, strengthen governance, responsibility and accountability.

He charged the lawmakers on improved and effective legislative oversight functions being one of the responsibilities of the legislature.

"What we do now is really not about us; it is for the totality of the system.

"I appreciate this budget retreat. Each one of us must be responsible in carrying out the assignments we are tasked with. This is very essential.

"We carry out budget scrutiny based on what is presented by the executive. Once we give a go-ahead, it means the executive must comply and treat it accordingly because it has become a law.

"Going forward, all the reports of each committee must be presented at the floor of the House. This will help us decide on how to act for the sake of transparency and accountability," the Speaker said.

He advised the lawmakers against docility in the task of ensuring that Lagos continues to weather economic storms.

"We all have roles to play and, in doing that, sentiments and self-benefits must be removed. The day you start with self-benefit, you have become a failure.

"If you do your job the way you should do it, you will earn your respect and will be held in high esteem by the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

"We are here today again to look at how we can improve on the laws we make at the House of Assembly as well as our oversight functions.

'Let's continue to be dedicated and loyal and I am sure we will get there. Let's always straighten the path for Lagosians and those coming behind us," he urged.

In his opening remark, the Clerk and Head of Service of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, described the retreat as an avenue to have insights into the state's budget.

While commending the Speaker, he urged the participants to "be attentive and take home fresh ideas and knowledge."

Breaking: Ogun state APC youth leader whisked away in commando manner confirmed to be DSS

Information reaching Naomi Sophy Blog states that the unidentified men who barged into the premises of the Ogun state APC youth leader in a commando style to hurriedly whisk him away is confirmed to be DSS personnel.

The DSS personnel led by the Ijebu Ode head also carted away some cash, hand phones and other items. The Ijebu Ode head is a high handed leader who subjects his major supporters to humiliation, restricts member's freedom to associate and other vices as alleged by members of the public.

Following the incident believed to be kidnapping against Aremu Babatunde, it is imminent that the aggrieved members of the both associations of Ismail Mustapha and Aremu Babatunde is scheduled for a meeting on Monday, October 13th, 2024 which might result to a public breach of peace from members of both aggrieved parties as intimated by a reliable source; Yet the Ogun State Government is silent about the disturbing development.

In a statement by Oludairo Johnson of Bold News Africa and SA on Media to the APC youth leader of Ogun state, Aremu Babatunde stated that it is surprising and disappointing that the DSS decided to act in aberration. It is paramount that the Ogun state government and APC leaders of the state to clear the air to ensure the safety of people.

Why I Support Floating the Naira: A Response to Peter Obi’s Approach - Prince Nixon Okwara

In line with my previous interview in Sun News, where I expressed my firm support for President Bola Tinubu's policies, I would like to address Peter Obi's recent comments on what he would have done differently concerning Nigeria's economic challenges. Obi suggested he would have devalued the Naira and borrowed to defend it. While this might sound appealing to some, history shows that this approach has been tried before and failed. I firmly support the floating of the Naira under Tinubu's administration, a move that I believe will lead to sustainable growth rather than a temporary fix.

Several past Nigerian administrations have adopted Peter Obi's strategy of artificially defending the Naira through borrowing. For instance, the administration of Goodluck Jonathan resorted to a similar method, which only depleted foreign reserves and increased national debt without addressing the underlying issues of corruption, poor productivity, and import dependency. The quick fixes of these past governments, including under Sani Abacha's regime, gave the illusion of stability, but they only postponed the inevitable economic crash that came once the resources to defend the Naira were exhausted.

President Tinubu’s approach, on the other hand, uproots these deep-rooted problems rather than masking them. Floating the Naira is not a short-term, populist solution but a bold move aimed at addressing fundamental economic distortions. By allowing market forces to determine the value of the Naira, Tinubu’s administration is effectively dismantling the structures that have stifled growth for decades. This move encourages transparency and attracts foreign investment, which is vital for reviving Nigeria’s economy. The floating of the currency forces Nigeria to confront its productivity deficit, encouraging the country to focus on self-reliance, local production, and export growth, all of which are necessary for sustainable development.

In contrast, Obi’s suggestion to devalue the currency and borrow money to prop it up would only postpone the country’s financial reckoning. Borrowing more at a time when Nigeria is already overburdened with debt would have been reckless. His approach would have drained Nigeria's reserves further and kept the country locked in a cycle of debt and dependency, romanticizing Nigeria's problems instead of fixing them. If Peter Obi had adopted this policy, his administration would have simply kicked the can down the road, leaving the next government with an even worse financial situation.

I also call on Atiku Abubakar to clearly articulate his economic policies, had he won the 2023 election. Nigerians deserve to hear from those who aspire to lead, especially during these challenging times. It is essential to interrogate their ideas and policies, especially when some are attempting to exploit the current hardship to position themselves for the 2027 elections. It is not enough to criticize; Nigerians need to know what tangible solutions these leaders would offer. We must stop falling for populist rhetoric without asking the hard questions.

Ultimately, I stand firmly behind the policies of President Tinubu’s administration. His decision to float the Naira, among other reforms, is a decisive and long-overdue move to reset Nigeria's economy. While the transition may be painful in the short term, it is necessary for building a future based on self-sufficiency, innovation, and real economic growth. Unlike Peter Obi’s quick fixes, which would have only postponed our problems, President Tinubu is dismantling the failed structures of the past and reinventing Nigeria for a better tomorrow. This is the kind of leadership we need to move the nation forward.

Breaking: Alimosho LG Vice Chairman Gets Appointment Letter To Take Over Office

The Vice Chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Mr. Akinpelu Johnson has officially received an appointment letter to take over from the suspended Chairman, Jelili Sulaimon.

The letter, dated 8th October, 2024, was signed by Kikelomo Bolarinwa, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development.

Titled: 'Re: Suspension of Mr. Sulaimon Jelili, Chairman, Alimosho Local Government Area Resolution of the House', the appointment letter read: "I write to refer to the resolution of the House of Assembly in respect of the above
subject which states that Mr. Sulaimon Jelili has been suspended indefinitely from
Office as the Chairman, Alimosho Local Government in accordance with Section 24
(1,2,3,4) of the Local Government Administration Law (Amendment) Law, 2016. (Copy attached for ease of reference).

"In view of the above, you are to assume duty IMMEDIATELY as the Acting Chairman, Alimosho Local Government."

Recall that the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday suspended Jelili Sulaimon from office following various allegations by the lawmakers.

The lawmakers resolved at the sitting that Johnson should take over the running of the affairs of the council.

The lawmakers further instructed the management of the council, including the manager and treasurer, to recognise Johnson and accord him all the support to make him work effectively.

Meanwhile, four out of the seven councillors in the council have denounced the purported suspension of Johnson by their three colleagues.

In a press release signed by the four councillors including Deputy Leader Mojisola Fabusuyi Ayeni (Ward D), Saheed Adejoke (Ward C), Rasheed Semiu (Ward E), Elizabeth Fashina (Ward F), they commended the House of Assembly for intervening while urging stakeholders' in the council to go about their activities peacefully.

Illegal Suspension of Hon. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson,Vice Chairman Alimosho Local Government


We, the undersigned legislators from Alimosho Local Government, officially dissociate ourselves from the staged managed, and illegal suspension of Mr. Akinpelu Ibrahim Johnson, The Vice Chairman of Alimosho Local Government.

We condemn in totality the purported suspension of the Vice Chairman by minority legislators who acted on instructions of the validly suspended Chairman.

As representatives of our people from different wards in Alimosho, we remain committed to supporting the state and federal government's efforts to improve the lives and well-being of our people, most especially at the grassroots.

We commend the State House of Assembly for their intervention in the mismanagement of the local government over the years. We urge all stakeholders to remain peaceful as there's no cause for alarm.

Don't Be Ignorant Of The Law, Lagos Assembly Hits Back At Suspended Chairman, Lawyer

The Lagos State House of Assembly has asked suspended chairman of Alimosho Local Government Area, Jelili Sulaimon, and his lawyer, Dr. Abdul Mahmud, to recognise the place of law rather than sentiments and emotions as guiding principles of legislative practices in Lagos State.

The advice by the Assembly on Tuesday was in response to the purported reaction of the duo to the suspension of the council chairman by the House on Monday at plenary.

The House, in the reaction signed by Hon. Stephen Ogundipe,
chairman, Committee on Information, Strategy and Security, further advised Jelili against ascribing self-made meanings to the laws empowering the lawmakers act where necessary in the interest of the people.

JELILI SULAIMAN'S SUSPENSION BACKED BY LAW

The attention of the Lagos State House of Assembly has been drawn to a statement supposedly signed by Dr. Abdul Mahmud, counsel to the embattled Alimosho local government chairman, Mr. Jelili Sulaimon, claiming to condemn the unanimous agreement of the Assembly to suspend his client on Monday, October 7, 2024.

Beyond the sensational rhetoric and half-baked details in the statement that is replete with emotions rather than deep-thoughts, it is pertinent to break down the real situation and puncture arguments as to the powers of the House to suspend Mr. Jelili.

In his race to the public to 'garner' sentiments, Jelili's lawyer forgot to remember that there are no local government areas that created themselves. In other words, the creation of a local government follows strict processes of the law and Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended) creates the path to knowledge about this.

"The system of local government by democratically elected local government councils is under this Constitution guaranteed; and accordingly, the Government of every State shall, subject to Section 8 of this Constitution, ensure their existence under a Law which provides for the establishment, structure, composition, finance and functions of such councils." Does this answer a question from the arguments of Jelili's lawyer as to who has the power to create laws that regulate the activities of local government councils and their administration?

For better understanding, that section provides for the existence of: democratically elected system of Local Government to be guaranteed by a law of the State House of Assembly.

The same section provides that the House of Assembly is required to make provisions for statutory allocation of public revenue to Local Government Councils in a State. Section 8(3) highlights the procedure to be undertaken by a State House of Assembly in the creation of a new Local Government Area(s) in a State while Section 8(4) highlights the procedure to be undertaken by a State House of Assembly, through law, in the boundary adjustment of existing Local Government Areas.

Now, Section 162 ( of the Constitution stipulates that a Law of the State House of Assembly shall provide for the distribution of monies standing to the credit of Local Government councils in a State.

Maybe we should remind him, his client and those travelling with him that Section 128 of the same Constitution further gives clarity to the powers of the House of Assembly.

"Subject to the provisions of this Constitution, a House of Assembly shall have power
by resolution published in its journal or in the
office Gazette of the Government of the State
to direct or cause to be directed an inquiry or
investigation into -
(a) any matter or thing with respect to which it
has power to make laws.

Here and based on the above constitutional provision, we are moved to ask again: who is legally guaranteed to make the law that creates the running of the local government? It is definitely not the National Assembly which is granted the constitutional powers to create states and not local governments.

This brings us to the Lagos State Local Government Administration Law (as amended) upon which the creation, administration and related activities of the local government system of Lagos State are based.

For better public information and effective knowledge, Section 24(a) of the amended law gives powers to the Lagos State House of Assembly to pass a resolution for the removal or suspension of any chairman, vice chairman, or official of any local government area (LGA) or local council development area (LCDA) after conducting an investigation. It states further that all that is needed for this resolution is a simple majority of the Assembly members. This emphasis is further highlighted in Section 5 of the law.

The amendment aims to ensure accountability and maintain order within the local government structure in Lagos State.

With this level of enlightenment as to the position of the laws guiding the administration of local government councils, it is further important to avoid misinformation or misrepresentation of the recent Supreme Court judgement concerning local governments in Nigeria. There is a marked difference between financial autonomy (upon which the lawyer's argument rests) and administrative powers of the House. The rush to churn out a defence armed, albeit, with inferior understanding of the Supreme Court judgement does not give a sufficient case against the action of the House of Assembly.

The Local Government Administration law from which the council chairman and other elected officials of the local government system derive their powers is a product of the House of Assembly. The office of the Auditor-General for Local Governments that monitors the financial activities of this third tier of government is created by the law made by the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The Local Government Service Commission which handles issues relating to the officials of local governments is a creation of the House of Assembly. The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) that conducts elections into elective offices at the local government level is a creation of the House of Assembly. Therefore, jettisoning these facts will amount to a poor knowledge of the legislature. If you say the Lagos State House of Assembly does not have the power over local governments, it means all these laws created by the House should not be in place. If the laws should not be in place, then why would local governments exist?

We learnt that in a bid to protect the chairman, the councillors of the Alimosho Local Government Area hurriedly suspended the Vice Chairman, Akinpelu Johnson. To show how laughable this is, it is good to note that the law guiding them does not have a provision for suspension. The Local Government Administration law gives them the opportunity to remove a chairman or vice chairman but this also comes with a process. Thus, the suspension of Johnson is simply invalid. It is therefore necessary to remind the council leader that he can also be removed in line with the Local Government Administration law of Lagos State. If he does not know this, then, it is a pity.

For the few trying to juxtapose the functions of the National Assembly with those of the House of Assembly in this case, they should take a chill pill and request to be tutored. The National Assembly cannot interfere with the runnings of a State. It is not a part of its duty. On the other hand, the constitution grants the State House of Assembly powers over the local governments.

It is to be noted that this is not the first time the Lagos State House of Assembly would be suspending the same council chairman. In May 2021, he was suspended with two others by the House for their total disregard for the local government guidelines created by the State Legislature.

While we urge against mawkishness, we would also like to task residents of the council and members of the public not to allow themselves be swayed by positions and opinions that are opposite the law in this regard.

Breaking: Lagos Assembly Suspends Alimosho Council Chairman

The Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday handed down an indefinite suspension to the chairman of the Alimosho Local Government Area, Jelili Sulaimon. The suspension is with immediate effect.

Sitting at plenary, the lawmakers resolved that the vice chairman of the council, Mr. Akinpelu Johnson, should take over the running of its affairs.

The House further instructed the management of the council, including the manager and treasurer, to recognise the authority of the vice chairman and accord him all the support to make him work effectively.

The chairman was suspended in a unanimous vote by the lawmakers over an alleged non-compliance, defiance and unyielding attitude to the legislative House.

Moving a motion for his suspension, the Chairman of the House Committee on Local Government Administration and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, recalled that in April 2024, pandemonium broke out in the Iyana-Ipaja axis of Alimosho Local Government leading to the death of one Mr. Micheal Ajayi.

Hon. Okanlawon, whose committee was saddled with the responsibility to investigate the cause of the pandemonium, said that it was discovered that Jelili masterminded the chaos.

According to Okanlawon, all stakeholders involved in the issue were invited, but Jelili had continued to show acts of misconduct to the committee of the House.

He highlighted the council chairman’s failure to adhere to the Assembly's directives and his mismanagement of public funds. He, therefore, called for Jelili's immediate suspension in line with relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

"He should be suspended immediately while the vice chairman, Akin Johnson, takes over with immediate effect," he prayed.

Majority Leader of the House, Noheem Adams, while supporting the call for Jelili's suspension, added that the action would make other local government chairmen sit well.

"The Alimosho council chairman does not follow procurement processes or the budget. There has been a lot of misconducts from him and I support that the chairman be suspended indefinitely," he said.

In his contribution Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts for Local Government, referred to the report submitted by the State Auditor-General concerning the activities of Jelili. The report underscored the council chairman's consistent non-compliance with financial regulations, with significant irregularities in his records.

Akinsanya, emphasising these discrepancies, suported Okanlawon’s call for Jelili's suspension.

Similarly, Hon. Ladi Ajomale expressed surprise that the council chairman had been recalcitrant despite previous reports detailing his alleged financial mismanagement.

Hon. Sa'ad Olumoh, while echoing his concerns, also prayed the House to invite Mr. Kolade Alabi and Mr. Rasak Ajala, chairmen of Bariga LCDA and Odi Olowo LCDA respectively, as heads of the Conference 57, to explain the widespread disregard by council chairmen for governance protocols.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa, who presided over the sitting, directed the Clerk of the House, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to communicate the Assembly's resolution to all relevant authorities

Hon. Odunbaku, the local government chairperson of Ojodu on behalf of Ikeja federal constituents and Lagos in its entirety, noted in his speech that the retiring commander of FRSC Lagos is indeed dedicated to the course of his service to the nation. Commander Patrick, he says, has shown integrity, courage, and leadership since the early days of his career until his retirement. Odunbaku commended the retiring officer's steadfastness in ensuring the safety of lives during his career and described Davol Patrick as a kind man whose legacy will not be forgotten. 

The retiring commander of FRSC Lagos, in his farewell speech, thanked God for a successful career; he stated that his career started in 1996. So far, so good; he's dedicated himself to hard work and diligence to attain success. He says promotion came for him slowly but steadily, making him reach desired heights as Zonal Commander of Lagos FRSC before retirement. Charged subordinates to leverage on his legacy to ensure diligence and accountability. Thanked stakeholders and colleagues supportive in contributions and commitment to the course of ensuring safety during his tenure. He made a plea to those he offended during the course of service and celebrated his wife for being understanding and supportive of his career.

Officers and friends made a good will speech in attestation of the retiring commander's impactful administration.

Nigeria@64: We are in bondage; the struggle for a change must continue—Human rights activist demonstrates captivity.

Demonstrating the situation of Nigeria, Human Rights Activist Comrade Prince Saviour Iche says Nigeria @64 is in bondage as he wraps himself up with the Nigerian flag tightened to his frame in show of the current reality of what a democratic system in Nigeria entails. 

Iche says it is seemingly sad to note that Nigeria, the largest continent in Africa, rich in all manner of resources, operates a democratic government where nobody can challenge the excesses of the government without being apprehended.

Comrade Prince Saviour Iche says,

"A country that takes instructions from the western world and cannot make decisions on her own, a country that takes orders from the IMF for an increase or decline in currency value, a country that depends mainly on oil to generate GDP while foreign bodies explore our natural resources to develop their countries, a country that forbids to conduct a free and fair election is a failed state."

"Nigeria of today depends more on importation for sustenance. More also, Nigeria has the highest ranking in Africa of student dropouts, meanwhile employment is on the increase and minimum wages for workers, as agreed, have not been put into effect. Nigeria is in a coma; it is not time to truly celebrate independence."

"President Tinubu should know that the youths who are the leaders of tomorrow have been stagnated by the retrogressive factors affecting the nation."

"There is no credible election; they merely do selection to office; it is noted that a leading political party must not lose an election to an opposition party. Moreso, Nigeria has become a mockery before other nations; the Buhari and Tinubu administration appointed incompetent ministers by choice, not by merit or area of specialization."

"Tinubu's speech on October 1st was mere noise with no merit or hope for Nigerians; Nigerians are suicidal and depressed due to hardship, while our president, ministers, and leaders in government bask in wealth. Nigeria is not a democratically independent state; the struggle for a change must continue."

Nigeria@64: Is Nigerian Independence a blessing or curse? Human Rights Advocates Make Analysis

Says Nigeria is in the menopausal stage

A coalition of human rights advocates in commemoration of October 1st Nigerian Independence Day had converged to analyze the state of the nation at 64. The major point of view in retrospect was centered on the theme: Is Nigerian independence at 64 a blessing or a curse? Organized by Ambassadors of Peace and Enlightenment Foundation (AMPEF) in collaboration with Know Your Rights for Justice (KnoRights).

Human rights advocates present are: Special Guest Speaker: Comrade Afolabi Gbajumo, the Lead Activist Africans for Human Rights International (AfriRights); Other speakers: Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, President Ambassadors of Peace and Enlightenment Foundation (AMPEF); Comrade Olusegun Adeeko, chairman/lead activist, Know Your Right for Justice (KnoRights); Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Adams, National Amir Muslim Initiative on Rights and Justice (MIRAJ) represented; Comrade Lucky Ehigina, President Christian Rights of Justice of Nigeria (CRJN); Comrade Ambassador Ajimotokin Bankole, Centre for Economic and Human Rights Advancement (CHERA);. 

The guest speaker, Comrade Afolabi Gbajumo, noted that the essence of the celebration of October 1st Independent Day is a charade for Nigeria is not truly independent. He emphasized that Britain colonized various nationalities and amalgamated them into a rainbow union in 1914; he called it the "Niger area," uniformed to mean Nigeria as imposed by the British imperialists. From 1914 to 2024 shows that Nigeria is 110 years in existence, not 64; however, whether Nigeria is 110 years or 64 years in existence, the nation is in retrogression, not progression. 

He stated that, from those many decades to date, our leaders are still busy traveling junketing in Presidential Jets around the worlds of Britain or the UK, USA, China, and Japan like beggars with caps in their hands begging foreign colonizers to come and solve Nigeria's self-created problems while the solutions remain with us, not foreign bodies. 

He further said:

"In as much as the leaders have continually sorted after Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), no foreigner will permanently invest in our insecure country except with imperial interests to re-enslave the country and engage in huge capital flights in hard currencies at the detriment of us. So we should stop deceiving ourselves, as I say here, that Nigeria is not yet a truly independent country."

"On the issue of misgovernance, the founding fathers/leaders of yesteryears like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, SAN, Alhaji Ahmadu Bello in the North with groundnut pyramids in Kano, and Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe in the East with large palm trees' plantations who had shown genuine concern in accomplishing the overall interests of the people were more revered, unlike our present ruling politicians who are solely concerned with looting the country's commonwealths and resources meant for catering for the masses."

"More regrettably, are those who abused the military process for their gain even resisted our tasky efforts in ending military regimes and installing democracy. Yet the democracy we fought for, they still infiltrated it with the likes of former military Head of State (1976-1979) the Rtd. Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo becoming President for 8 years (1999-2007) and later another former military Head of State (1983-1985) Rtd. Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari also wasted another 8 years of Nigerians as civilian President between 2015-2023 last year."

"The basic solutions will not be achieved by relying on failed rulers past or present, but should rest on the masses engagement in a peaceful-revolutionary struggle that would transform the country and make governance very-less expensive and unattractive. We must not be cajoled by ethnic sentiment, religious bigotry, or deceived with a token from their loot to enable sustainably massive advancements."

"From both wings of the misruling class of military and civilian regimes in Nigeria, the bottom line of our experience with them has been their condemnable corruption-upon-corruption, thereby manipulating what ought to be overall blessings into obvious curses from the hard-working people they have turned into "monkeys dey work, haboons dey chop."

Comrade Olusegun Adeeko, chairman/lead activist, Know Your Right for Justice (KnoRights), who seconded in speech and opinion on the theme, added that the primary purpose of the government is to provide welfare and security, but Nigeria lacks both, making it a failed state. Nigeria, he says, has no significant development that has positively affected her citizens at 64. However, the struggle continues until our leaders get it right, Olusegun quipped.

Comrade Ajimotokin Bankole of the Centre for Economic and Human Rights Advancement (CHERA), still on the guest speaker's analysis, added that independence means freedom from colonial rule, which implies that we as citizens can now enjoy positive change and development. To examine properly, there is a need to analyze independence with our present reality, which spells 'hardship'. Our living standards have been imprisoned, we have been betrayed by our leaders, and positive expectations have turned into depression and oppression. I must say that this independence is far from being a blessing, Ajimotokin laments. 

Comrade Prince Saviour Iche, also in lieu of Nigerian Independence, @64, noted that the country is experiencing a curse as a result of bad leadership where the primary purpose of a government has failed in her duties to provide welfare and security. There are four nonfunctional refineries, while Dangote, who solely and completely built one is controlled by mode of operation, subsidies were removed without considering its adverse effect on Nigerians. Electricity in many areas of the country has zero availability compared to neighboring African countries like Ghana and others. Meanwhile, the rate of unemployment is at its peak. Nigeria is at its menopausal stage. It is time for all to stand up for what is right, he asserts. 

Meanwhile, to show patriotism, Comrade Iche is training over 40 persons between the ages of 8 and 18 years of age on skill acquisition. The participants are meant to complete learning and be certified on 7th December 2024 with empowerment funds, which serve as start-up capital to enhance their various skills for productivity.

During a courtesy and familiarization visit to the office of Mr. Albert Sunday Ndem, the proprietor of Christ Devine Favour Schools Yaba, by the executives of Correspondent Chapel NUJ Lagos, the school proprietor noted that the federal government should appoint professionals in education to head the various branches in the educational sector. Encourages private educational institutions to give scholarships to the less privileged.

Mr. Albert laments the poor state of the educational system and says the spate of tribalism played in getting approvals of schools and other relevant approvals from the governing bodies of the educational sector is a call for concern. Moreso, the appointees fixed to head departments in the educational sector are not educationists; therefore, set policies by these non-educationists meet with complications as they are not in accordance with educational standards.

In his statements, he emphasized that

"Govt should look into the educational sector critically and holistically. There are challenges in tribalism that have been neglected for years; it's high time the government gives full concentration to the educational sector and reshuffles heads devoid of tribalism. Educationists should head educational bodies and institutions."

Mr. Albert added that some non-governmental organizations and churches have also assisted in giving free scholarships to the less privileged students of his school. NAWOJ, FRSC Collaborates To Promote Safety Awareness For Nigerian Road Users

The Lagos State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) promises collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to foster productive partnership in promoting safety on the Nigerian roads during a courtesy and familiarization visit to the office of Corps Commander Patrick D. Davou, Lagos State Sector Commander. 

The executives and members of Nawoj, chaperoned by Dr. Adeola Ekinne, also aim to establish a long-lasting relationship with the sector to enhance visibility in the know-how of rules and regulations as regards safety on the roads. Thereby creating awareness for vulnerable road users, including women and children; intensifying media coverages of road safety issues; promoting responsible driving; and working toward reducing accidents and fatalities on our roads.

Dr. Adeola Ekine, the chairperson of Nawoj Lagos, stated in her speech at the courtesy visit that the NAWOJ Lagos State Chapter is a notable platform for advocating gender equality, promoting responsible journalism, and driving societal development. Moreso, the association's commitment to its set goals aligns with the Federal Road Safety Corps’s mission to ensure safer roads and save lives across the nation.

Road safety, Ekine says, is a pressing issue that affects every family, community, and individual in Nigeria. As journalists, we must play a critical role in educating the public, spreading awareness, and promoting safe driving practices through responsible media coverage via our platforms with the intention to support the FRSC’s efforts to reduce road accidents, promote compliance with traffic regulations, and enhance road safety consciousness in Lagos State, she said. 

Ekine added that, by working together, both sectors can amplify shared objectives for the betterment of society. Commends the sector commander for demonstrating true leadership, dedication, and resilience, especially in managing the complexities of Lagos, a city renowned for its high traffic density. 

The Corps Commander, Patrick D. Davou, Lagos State Sector Commander FRSC, acknowledged NAWOJ's purpose for the courtesy visit as an inspiration to propel in the advancement to ensure safety on our roads. He mentioned that FRSC as a sector was formed with the aims and objectives to reduce road accidents by means of strategies and laws to ensure safety. 

Corps Commander Patrick noted that disseminating information has been made easy with the help of the media. Sensitization involving the women in media ensures that safety measures will be repeated instructions in the home in hopes that more people will imbibe safety awareness. Commends Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu and his administration for the support given to FRSC to enhance operations. 

Other Sector Commanders of FRSC who warmly received the executives and members of NAWOJ during the courtesy visit include: LD Oguntade, UN Njoku, UN Emmanuel, EC Obi, and EO Jaiyeola.

In addition to the sector commander's acknowledgement, LD Oguntade said the collaboration of NAWOJ and FRSC will be a long-lasting experience and a great achievement for the Lagos command. He says it is sacrosanct that both bodies work together for the benefit of all Nigerians. More also, the joint efforts to promote safety will be a lot easier to curb the spate of contradictions in Nigeria.

UN Njoku said;

"Women are very powerful and special. Women should learn to plan their movements and not be in a rush to do things. Women should have morals and guide the younger generations about modesty in dressing and morals in general."


At the visit, the outgoing Corps Commander, Patrick D. Davou, Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC, was decorated as one of the Ambassadors of NAWOJ Lagos Chapter. Speaker Obasa Celebrates First Lady Oluremi Tinubu At 64

- calls her Nigeria's shining light

The Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has congratulated Senator Oluremi Tinubu on her 64th birthday describing her as a compassionate Nigerian dedicated to impacting the citizens of the country.

In a message by the Speaker's media office, Dr. Obasa noted the First Lady's courage, commitment to a better society, support for the President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and her belief in an egalitarian society.

The Speaker further described her as a shining example of a Nigerian woman who commits her life and service to lifting the downtrodden.

"The First Lady's love for Nigeria and her roles in national unity and development are worthy of emulation by every well-meaning citizen. She has continued to touch lives across the country, particularly lifting women and children out of poverty.

"With her philanthropic activities, it is noteworthy that Senator Tinubu has continued to etch her name in the history of Nigeria as a politician of repute, a champion of the downtrodden and an advocate for the youth, the aged and good governance," Dr. Obasa said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele.

The Speaker added that right from the time she played roles as First Lady of Lagos, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has remained a crusader for a more vibrant democracy in the country.

According to Obasa, "our First Lady has been a great pillar of support for the President as she takes up roles that further unify the country.

"History will never forget how, with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, she played her part in the fight that finally gave birth to the democracy currently practised in Nigeria.

"As a true mother, she ensured that those exiled during the fight against the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election result won by Chief MKO Abiola were adequately cared for.

"It is also noted that as First Lady of Lagos State, she made sure that the children of the poor were lifted through educational programmes including The Spelling Bee Competition, which, delightedly, has produced great minds and future leaders.

The Igbo cultural day is set aside especially to celebrate Igbo sons and daughters at home and in diaspora. It's a means of preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of the Igbo people. It provides an opportunity for Igbo individuals and communities to showcase their traditional values, customs, language, arts, music, and dance, as seen in the celebration of the new yam festival known as 'Iriji' on Sunday, September 15, 2024, by the Ezendigbo of Ijegun Ijeododo, Chairman Council of Ezes in Lagos, Eze Amb. Dr. Eze Chika Nwokedi of Obi Eziokwu's Palace.

The highlight of the event involved the cutting and eating of the new yam, the presentation of kolanut, Igbo cultural displays, traditional folk music, masquerade displays, and others.

The first half of the occasion commenced with the bestowing of the chieftain title on eight members identified with Obi Eziokwu Palace in recognition of their behavioral qualities in the last 10 years. These title holders include: High Chief Chibuzor Obidike, 'The Oyi of Oyi' Ijegun Ijeododo; High Chief Obiora Okonkwo, 'Ozo Igbo Ndu Guruguru'; Chief Udegbe Sylvester Chioma, 'Ozuo ome 1 of Ijegun Ijeododo; High Chief Dr. Ndubuisi Ebem, 'Uru ka Na Chukwu Ijegun Ijeododo'; and High Chief Christian Ikechi Uwaeme, Akaekpuchionwa 1 of Alimosho.

Speaking with the title chiefs, Naomi Sophy Blog gathered that the titles were given according to the roles played individually towards members of the society. It is expected that the chiefs maintain the given titles to enable a wider scope in their effort and responsibility towards people in the community, as emphasized by Eze Chika.

The second half of the event was done glamorously with a rich display of cultural heritage in welcome of the new yam. According to customs and tradition, the Iriji is celebrated in the ember months. For Eze Chika Nwokedi, he celebrates 'Iriji' every 3rd week of September yearly to usher in the king of all crops as well as the commencement of a new era of fruitfulness. It is an Igbo culture to celebrate the bountiful harvest of yams before consumption.

A speech was given in reference to the new yam festival by Chief Ifeanyi Iguegbe as he welcomes all in attendance. In the official speech, it is noted that the new yam festival is an epic historical event that should be observed by Igbos at home and in diaspora, as seen in Eze Chika's yearly event for being a custodian of tradition.

Speaking with Chairman of the occasion Chief Martins Ifenedebem, the former president of the 'Electrical Dealers Association of Nigeria Alaba International Market', he noted that the importance of the new yam festival is in significance with the Igbo culture, which stems from revering yam as the king of all crops before consumption to enable a better harvest in subsequent years. Advices Igbos to plant their own yam and watch out for it's harvest as tradition demands.

Eze Amb Dr Chika Nwokedi, the Ezendigbo of Ijegun Ijeododo, Chairman Council of Ezes in Lagos, in excitement, told pressmen at the new yam festival of 2024 that despite the economic downturn, the turnout of attendees from all tribes coming together to celebrate the Igbo cultural day with the Igbos in the Ijegun Ijeododo community in unity makes the occasion a remarkable event. He stated that it is paramount for Igbos to represent their culture anywhere in the world, as it is a reminder of one's origin. Advices Igbos against unwise decisions of accumulating wealth to purchase material things, forgetting they do not own landed properties. Do well to help the less privileged rather than do frivolous spending, he added.

As usual, the magnanimous monarch, Eze Chika, in company of his wife, Pst. Tessy Chika Nwokedi 'Ugoeze,' gave out lots of gift items as well as educated attendees on the act of giving. Eze Nwokedi, who has helped a lot of people, including widows and the incarcerated, will be empowering over 100 more widows and widowers in December 2024 as he encourages his VIP friends to support his course.

Lastly, the cutting and eating of the new yam as the occasion demanded was done in the company of co-monarchs and dignitaries present. The VIP attendees of the Iriji event include: AIG Ogundele J. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have taken into custody a wanted alleged drug baron, Alhaji Suleiman Ganiu Aremu (a.k.a Barryshine) two years after coming under the radar of the anti-narcotics agency.

Suleiman who is the Managing Director/CEO of Barryshine Suleiman Nigeria Ltd came under the agency’s watchlist over his alleged role in four foiled attempts to export cocaine to Saudi Arabia and Qatar through the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA Ikeja Lagos between 2022 and 2024.

His name first featured on November 13, 2022, when a female passenger on Qatar airlines flight to Saudi Arabia, Alhaja Ajisegiri Kehinde Sidika was arrested at the MMIA in possession of 400 grams of cocaine, which was concealed inside female footwears.

Investigation later revealed that one Abdullahi Olarenwaju Ramon, who is a brother to Suleiman hired the arrested drug courier. Further facts emerged that the flight tickets and other travel expenses of the suspect were sourced by Alhaji Suleiman Ganiu Aremu.

A few days after the arrest of Ajisegiri Kehinde Sidika, another drug mule, Lawal Lateef Oyenuga was also arrested on November 24, 2022, with the same quantity of cocaine, 400 grams, concealed in male footwears while going to the same destination, Saudi Arabia.

The suspect, Lawal Lateef Oyenuga confessed that one Wasiu Sanni Gbolahan (a.k.a Teacher) who was later arrested and convicted by the court, hired him for Suleiman. Lawal further alleged that Wasiu Gbolahan linked him up with the baron through one Igbono, who was later unveiled through investigation as Oluwafemi Akande Abidoye (a.k.a Igbono, Murphy, Femi Iwaya, Ade Iwaya, Baba Eje and Ejeoto)

While investigation of the two cases subsisted and the manhunt for the baron was ongoing, two drug mules were arrested at the MMIA on June 21, 2024 on their way to Doha, Qatar. One of the suspects who was later identified as Aikhomoun Daniel (a.k.a Oladapo Olanrewaju) expelled in observation custody a total of 90 pellets of cocaine, weighing 1.022kg, which he ingested, while the second suspect, Ayigoro Waheed Omobolaji excreted 60 wraps of cocaine with a total weight of 662 grams.

Further investigation later revealed that the two arrested couriers, Aikhomoun Daniel and Ayigoro Waheed Omobolaji were recruited by the same Igbono who works for the baron and featured in 2022 during the arrest of Ajesegiri Kehinde Sidika and Lawal Lateef Oyenuga. Financial investigation conducted by the agency also linked the baron Suleiman to the arrested suspects and two of his associates who recruit traffickers for him: Oluwafemi Akande Abidoye and Olanrewaju Abdullahi Ramon, both currently at large.

As a result, the agency blocked the bank accounts linked to members of the cartel after which Suleiman was eventually taken into custody on August 26, 2024 for further investigation.

In his statements, Suleiman claimed he was into property development and hotel management while he lived in Lagos and Paris, France. He also stated that he ran another business that dealt in in cloths with his wife at Balogun market, Lagos Island, adding that his regular visits to Saudi Arabia was to perform lesser hajj.

He said he held the traditional title of Akeweje of Yaba (Youth Leader of Yaba Land). Already, some properties traced to Suleiman include: two houses at 63 and 72 Queens Street, Ebute-Meta and his Barryshine hotel at 95 Freeman street, Yaba, Lagos.

Meanwhile, Justice Dipeolu Deinde Isaac of the Federal High Court, Lagos has granted an application by the NDLEA for the extension of the detention of the drug kingpin Suleiman for 30 days and to declare his two associates: Oluwafemi Akande Abidoye and Olanrewaju Abdullahi Ramon, both currently at large, wanted.

Ruling on the motion ex-parte in suit number: FHC/L/MISC/555/24, Justice Dipeolu said: “an order is hereby made declaring one Oluwafemi Akande Abidoye a.ka ‘Igbono’, ‘Murphy’, ‘Femi Iwaya’, ‘Ade Iwaya’, ‘Baba Eje’, ‘Ejeoto’ wanted who is presently at large for his involvement in multiple drug trafficking activities with Suleiman Aremu Ganiu (a.k.a Barryshine).”

The judge also ruled that “an order is hereby made declaring one Olarenwaju Ramon Abdulahi wanted who is presently at large for his involvement in the drug trafficking activities with Suleiman Aremu Ganiu (a.k.a Baryshine) with respect to the arrest of Ajisegiri Kehinde Sidika who was arrested at MMIA Ikeja-Lagos during outward clearance of Qatar Airways flight to Saudi Arabia with 400 grams of cocaine concealed in foot wears.”

Reacting to the development, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended the officers and men of the MMIA Strategic Command for the painstaking two years investigation that culminated in the conviction of three traffickers and the eventual arrest of the kingpin behind the cartel. He said this demonstrates that the long arm of the law will always get whoever is involved in the criminal trade no matter how long it takes.

Chairman of Aguiyi Ironsi International Spare Parts Market Association Chief Chukwuma Fears Arrest Over Alleged Harassment, Violence on Traders; Seek Cover

Police Intelligence operatives from the Tactical team in Surulere, Lagos, have began manhunt for the Chairman of Aguiyi Ironsi International Spare Parts Market Association, Chief Chukwuma Onyebinanma a.k.a Ikukuoma, who was said to have gone into hiding over alleged violent attack on another trader, Mr. Lotanna Okafor, inside the market.

Naomisophyblog reports that this happened barely few days after Onyebinanma was released on bail at IRT office at the Force Headquarters in Abuja over use of violence by force of arms to retain power in the market by attacking some traders, Uche Eze a.k.a Baba Ido and Izuchukwu Ikeuba, who allegedly wrote petitions against him and members of his task force.

Ikukuoma was said to have become violent after he lost his goodwill and popularity with the traders due to poor leadership and high-handedness, he was said to have resort to violence to retain power. He was alleged to have empowered members of his task force to use force of violence on perceived enemies in the market, which has caused serious tension in the market recently.

The latest manhunt for him was as a result of the brutal attack on Mr. Lotanna Okafor, popularly known as Obi Eziokwu, while he was attempting to attend the General Meeting of the market association. The members of the task force attacked and inflicted injury on him while they also destroyed his expensive medicated glasses in the process.

The Chairman was initially said to have gone to the Tactical team office, was granted an administrative bail and asked to come back with his task force chairman for further investigation over the allegations of armed violence, assault, intimidation and harassment against him by the complainant.

According to the traders, the evidence provided by the complainant was said to be overwhelming against him.
Since then, Chief Onyebinanma was said to have gone into hiding to escape prosecution should he be found culpable in the course of investigation.
Onyebinanma, who is the prime suspect with his task force chairman in the latest petition by Mr. Okafor, was said to have been running helter skelter seeking for help on how to resolve the matter.

He was said to have also gone to a popular Igbo traditional leader in Ijegun area of Lagos seeking for his support and intervention in order to make peace with the aggrieved traders in the market.

According to some of the traders, the embattled Chairman, Ikukuoma, became brutal after he destroyed his good will when he took over and became unpopular in the market while wanting to contest for a second tenure. And having realized that he may likely lose in the coming election, he resorted to violence against perceived opposing traders coupled with the sudden introduction of ID cards issued only to his supporters in order to disenfranchise his opponents.

When the traders and some of the chairmanship aspirants protested, he became brutal and started using members of his task force to harass and intimidate them having marked them as enemies in the market.

Speaking to Naomisophyblog, Onyebinanma, who denied all the allegations, was unable to deny the use of arms such as knives and cutlasses by his task force and preventing known members of the association from attending meetings. He claimed that he introduced the use of data base and ID cards to know their members and for security reasons. However, he was unable to explain why he introduced it especially the ID cards at the period the market wants to conduct an election he is interested in.

He also denied sending any person or the task force to attack Mr. Okafor but acknowledged that Okafor was actually attacked by the task force based on his instruction not to allow members without ID cards to attend meetings.

Chief Ikukuoma stated:

“On 18th July, 2024, when I was about to preside over our monthly meeting, I got a call informing me that some people held a meeting and they were coming to disrupt my own meeting with thugs and cultists.

" I called my task force chairman to explain the matter and insisted that nobody without their ID cards should be allowed to attend the meeting. Later people with machetes, daggers and other weapons started coming out from everywhere."

" My task force protected the market by using their knives and cutlasses to chase them away. Not knowing this was all planned, they snapped them with the knives when they were chasing the thugs. After everything, they wrote a petition to the IRT Abuja, and CP Surulere.”

He also confirmed that he had visited the Tactical team at Surulere and was asked to come back with the task force chairman, but he was unable to go over fear of prosecution according to sources in the market.

Chief Kelechi Oputa Debunks Claims Related to Arrest of Ladipo Market Chairman, Onyebinanma

The Chairmanship aspirant for the Aguiyi Ironsi International Market leadership, Chief Kelechi Oputa a.k.a Baba KC, has debunked claims by the embattled chairman of the market, Chief Chukwuma Onyebinanma, in connection to his arrest following the petition by some aggrieved traders over high handedness and that of members of his task force and unlawful attack on the perceived opposition traders, which is causing crises in the market in Lagos State.

 Naomisophyblog reports that Chief Oputa  noted that he had no relatedness whatsoever with respect to the petition against him and members of his task force and their subsequent arrest.

He maintained that all what the aggrieved traders are demanding from him and his Executives is a free and fair election and for them to desist from intimidating and harassing the traders with the task force in the market.

Chief Oputa further said:

“I was not a party to the petition and did not go to Abuja over the matter. Yet Onyebinanma went on social media mentioning my name in order to tarnish my image just because I declared my intention to contest for the position of chairman of the above mentioned market in the forthcoming election, which is my right as a  law abiding member  of the Aguiyi Ironsi International Market, Ladipo, Lagos State” Chief Oputa said."

" I am known in the market as a peace maker and that was why the traders gave me the title as Ambassador of Peace, for the sacrifices i made to ensure that there is peace in the market after I contested the last election with Onyebinanma and accepted the outcome of the election."

" Let it be known that i contested the last election with Onyebinanma and the electoral committee declared Onyebinanma winner with one vote, which nearly caused trouble in the market over the manner he was declared the winner."

He further explained that in order to avert crisis in the market, he intervened and pleaded with his supporters to accept the result for the interest of peace in the market. He wondered why Onyebinanma should be mentioning his name because he wants to contest for the position of the Chairman in the market, which he had done before with other contestants.

Chief Oputa stated that the contentious issue in the market is that he declared to contest for the position of the Chairman,  which Onyebinanma felt threatened about and started creating selective and  strange membership data base and ID cards for some selected members with the intention of using same as a qualification for voting in the forthcoming election in the market, which has never happened before during elections in the market.

 In his words, “He has started disenfranchising perceived opponents supporters in the market from attending meetings using the said ID card, which he has given to his supporters alone”.

On the issue of petition to the IGP by some aggressive traders, Chief Oputa explained that on the day of their General Meeting, he went for the meeting and they reluctantly allowed him to go in.

However, when the immediate Vice Chairman and Treasurer of the market,  Uche Eze a.k.a Baba Ido and Izuchukwu  Ikeuba, came for the same meeting, the members of the task force refused them entry, manhandled, assaulted and  attacked them with unlawful objects, which led to crises and writing of the petition to the IGP and did not link him.

On the issue of ID cards for the election, Chief Oputa stated that majority of the traders do not want it because it was mainly meant to suit the Chairman’s purpose and the ID cards are given selectively to Onyebinanma’s supporters, which is not acceptable.

He explained that during previous elections in the market, it was usually conducted by shop to shop enumeration, which was also used in the last election, where he was declared the winner.

“But because Onyebinanma has come to realise that he is now very unpopular in  the market due to his bad leadership, he is therefore, trying to devise a means through this his so called data base and ID cards, which are only given to Onyebinanma’s known supporters and it is not acceptable. What we are demanding for is equal rights for all the  traders, who are members of the Aguiyi Ironsi International Market at Ladipo, Lagos State and equal level playing ground for all the contestants and  members at all times and during the conduct of the forthcoming election” Oputa stated.

Chief Chukwuma Onyebinanma was said to have landed in trouble after he started using violence to suppress, harass and intimidate traders with force of arms through his task force, having disappointed the traders, who are the key critical stakeholders for his reelection, with poor and bad leadership in the market.

Market Authority Bill To Strengthen Lagos Business Activities - Lawmakers

Majority of the lawmakers at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Tuesday supported the Market Authority Bill currently being considered by the legislators.

The bill scaled second reading on the floor of the House with the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, committing it to the House Committee on Local Government. The committee is expected to report back to the House in two weeks.

The bill, if passed, aims to provide for the registration, formation, organisation and operation of market operations in the State.

Hon. Sanni Okanlawon, chairman of the local government committee, said the bill tries to address some anomalies in the extant law and would make it mandatory for all markets to be duly registered.

His colleague, Rauf Age-Suleiman, noted that the composition of the board of the bill is all-encompassing.

The Deputy Majority Leader, Adedamola Richard Kasunmu, noted that the Iyaloja-General belongs in the Market Advisory Council as captured in the bill. As such, it would amount to dual roles if she is added to the Market Board.

On his part, Hon. Sa'ad Olumoh said the bill makes it mandatory for the appointment of the board members to be ratified by the House. He also noted that the bill would help to scrap situations where traders arbitrarily apportion titles to themselves.

"Clause 18 talks about an advisory board which the Iyaloja-General is going to be heading. That tells us that our Iyaloja is in a better position to give the necessary advice," he said.

While Hon. Stephen Ogundipe said the proposed law would be appreciated by Lagosians, his colleague, Hon. Nureni Akinsanya, urged that the bill should make it necessary for only honest people to gain positions.

Contributing to the debate, Hon. Aro Moshood emphasised that the bill ensures the cleanliness of markets, their effective management and takes care of gridlocks caused by the activities of traders and buyers.

NDLEA intercepts UK, Europe-bound cocaine, opioids in female sanitary pads, hair cream

. Destroys over 100,000kg cannabis in Ekiti forest; recovers tons of illicit drugs in Kano, Osun, Taraba, Kaduna, Jigawa, Kogi, Bauchi, and Borno raids

Consignments of cocaine and pharmaceutical opioids concealed in ladies’ sanitary pads and hair treatment cream containers heading to the United Kingdom, Ireland and Cyprus have been intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at three courier firms in Lagos.

In one of the logistics companies, not less than 30 parcels of cocaine weighing 1.1 kilograms were concealed in hair cream containers were recovered by NDLEA officers of the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation, DOGI, during examination of cargoes going to Ireland on Tuesday 3rd September 2024. Another consignment of 24 parcels of cocaine weighing 862 grams also hidden in hair cream containers meant for delivery in UK was equally intercepted at the same company on Friday 6th September.

In the same vein, a total of 525 pills of tramadol 225mg and ecstasy (MDMA) concealed in ladies’ sanitary pads going to Cyprus were seized at another courier firm in Lagos by NDLEA operatives on Tuesday 3rd September, while a shipment of 200 ampoules of promethazine injection and pentazocine injection hidden in food items and herbs heading to London, UK, was also seized by operatives on Wednesday 4th September.

Operatives equally intercepted another consignment of tramadol 225mg buried in granulated melon that came from Cameroon and going to South Africa on Friday 6th September.

No fewer than 550,000 pills of tramadol were also intercepted at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Port Harcourt on Monday 2nd September during a joint examination of a cargo that came from Delhi, India, with men of the Nigerian Customs Service while a suspect was already arrested in connection with the seizure.

In Ekiti state, NDLEA operatives supported by men of the Nigerian Army on Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th September stormed three camps inside the Ise-Ekiti forest reserve, in Ise/Orun local government area where over 100,000 kilograms of cannabis spread across 51 hectares of farm land were destroyed. The affected settlements include: Aba Saalaja with 23 hectares; Aba Paanu with 12 hectares and Aba Arogunmatidi with 16 hectares, all within the Ise-Ekiti forest reserve.

Two suspects: Bala Musa, 42, and Danladi Muhammad, 44, were arrested on Friday 6th September along Toro-Jos road, Kaduna with 305kg cannabis concealed in false compartment of a J5 boxer bus marked YLA 682 XM, while another suspect, Aminu Ayuba, 24 was arrested in possession of 18 kilograms of same substance at Makarfi town. Two others: Umar Usman, 40, and Zubairu Kabiru, 45, were arrested along Zaria- Kaduna highway in possession of 1300 tablets of tramadol, all same day.

In Jigawa state, Uzairu Ya'u, 30, was nabbed with 32.6kg of cannabis on Thursday 5th September at Koran Shehu, while operatives in Kogi on Wednesday 4th September intercepted 77,300 pills of tramadol, diazepam and exol-5 as well as 1,230 bottles of codeine in a commercial bus driven by Attai Okolo, 68, along Aloma - Ejule road, Ofu LGA, Kogi state.

Another suspect, Mohammed Idris, 56, was nabbed along Okene-Lokoja-Abuja expressway on Tuesday 3rd September, with 42.400kg cannabis coming from Lagos enroute Kano.

While NDLEA operatives in Borno state arrested Idris Muhammad, 40, at Ramat area of Maiduguri on Thursday 5th September with 13,100 pills of tramadol, their counterparts in Kano on Wednesday 4th September nabbed Hakilu Usman, 35, with 25.8kg cannabis and 3,000 pills of diazepam along Kano – Daura road.

In Taraba, no fewer than 87,790 pills of tramadol were recovered from Musa Adamu, 30, when he was arrested in Zing, while in Osun state, a raid of the home of a drug kingpin, Mayowa Abayomi Awe (a.k.a Bishop) in Ilesa on Wednesday 4th September led to the seizure of 43grams of crack cocaine, 23grams of methamphetamine, 17.126kg cannabis and a locally made pistol.

With the same vigour, Commands and formations of the Agency across the country continued their War Against Drug Abuse, WADA, sensitization activities to schools, worship centres, work places and communities among others in the past week. These include: WADA enlightenment lecture for students of Kano state Polytechnic, Kano; staff of Don Bosco Science Academy, Ukhun, Ekpoma, Edo state; members of Peace Corps, Osogbo, Osun state; Council of Traditional Rulers, Abakaliki, Ebonyi state; and taxi drivers at Central Motor Park, Sokoto, among others.

While commending the officers and men of DOGI, PHIA, Ekiti, Kano, Osun, Taraba, Kaduna, Jigawa, Kogi, Bauchi, and Borno Commands of the Agency for the arrests and seizures, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) noted that their operational successes and those of their compatriots across the country are well appreciated. He urged them not to rest on their oars but continue to intensify ongoing drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts.

Police permit required for Nigerian citizens to assemble freely for a demonstration is unconstitutional - Comrade Iche tells Pres. Tinubu

Comrade Prince Saviour Iche draws attention to the recent development regarding the peaceful protest NANS proposed to commence September 15, 2024 and how it is unconstitutional for Pres.Tinubu's administration to require that protesters must obtain permit before demonstration in contrast with section 40 of the 1999 Constitution.

Although, the Forum of Zonal Coordinators of the National Association of Nigerian Students has said that the leadership of the Association will rather commence constructive engagement with the Federal Government and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited to achieve the reduction of the fuel pump price rather than embark on a demonstration. Warned students across the country against participation in any purported planned protest over the recent increase in fuel price, saying NANS has not called for any protest that hoodlums could hijack.

More also, the Chairman of the Forum, Comrade Bilal Kurfi, sympathized with the student population over the challenges posed by well-intentioned economic policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

In reference to the above, Iche maintains that the Nigeria constitution in corroboration with human rights policy, states that Protesting is a fundamental democratic right that allows citizens to express their grievances and demand change. In Nigeria, this right is explicitly protected by the Constitution, specifically under Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution. This section guarantees every Nigerian citizen the right to assemble freely and associate with others, emphasizing the importance of peaceful assembly.

Iche says, the constitutional basis for protesting in Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution states:

"Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons, and in particular he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any other association for the protection of his interests."

" This provision underlines that Nigerians do not require prior approval or a permit from the police to organize and participate in peaceful protests. The Constitution's framers recognized the importance of allowing citizens to freely express their opinions and assemble without undue interference from the state."

"The right to protest is a cornerstone of democratic engagement and a vital tool for citizens to hold their government accountable. In Nigeria, this right is constitutionally guaranteed, and the landmark case of 'Inspector General of Police v. All Nigeria Peoples Party (2007)' has reinforced that no police permit is required for peaceful assemblies."

" While the practice of notifying the police is aimed at ensuring public safety, it should not be confused with seeking permission. Upholding the constitutional right to protest without undue restrictions is essential for the continued growth of Nigeria's democracy."

Iche further noted that:

" The government is trying the patience of Nigerians by setting certain rules to frustrate the people's right in addressing the odd situation faced leading to untold hardship on the citizens. Our president has no clue or any form of leadership roles and responsibilities neither does he possess empathy on suffering Nigerians."

" Pump price has gradually and steadily increased over some few months, the agreed N70,000 minimum wage has not been put to effect but the presidential private jet of N100bn has been bought to the detriment of the masses's survival especially during this critical time."

" Dangote refinery has commenced operation to roll out fuel but NNPC is busy fixing pump price for Dangote, a very desperate move to further cause hardship on Nigerians."

" August 1st, some civil society groups and other human rights agitators, gave the government a month ultimatum notifying them about the hardship faced by Nigerians yet the gov't have blatantly refused to take heed. Tinubu's administration would rather employ machineries to threaten agitators rather than address the concerns tabled before him."

" Protesters who had peacefully demonstrated were charged for terrorism, our judiciary system has been compromised by butt lickers, our national security is no longer working in the interest of the citizens. The last protest yielded no result so far, things have become worse hence NANS approach to meet with the president over the unlikely situation plaguing the nation."

Lastly Iche warned that Pres. Tinubu's administration is trying to awaken the sleeping dogs. The intimidation, neglect and harassment must stop, the president should also be ready to face the outburst of frustration and fury from Nigerians if concerning issues aren't addressed immediately.
