Mr Segun Olulade, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LAHA), on Tuesday said the call by some Yoruba leaders for regional autonomy would not disintegrate Nigeria.

Olulade of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN-Epe I), made the remark in an interview in Ikeja.

NAN recalls that the Yoruba Elders’ Forum recently in Ibadan advocated regional autonomy, which was vehemently opposed by the Northern leaders.

The northern leaders said the call by the Yoruba Forum was capable of throwing the country into crises and disintegration.

The Forum, chaired by Retired Lt.- Gen. Alani Akinrinade, also called for a reversion to the parliamentary system of government, because the presidential system was too expensive for Nigeria.

‘’The Northern leaders should not misunderstand the call by the Yoruba leaders.

‘’Our problem in this country is that we always attach ethnicity and religious sentiments to issues; this cannot bring about development in the nation.

“Whenever people come up with a decision, some people see it as an attack, instead of developing the ideas for progressive purpose,’’ the lawmaker said.

Olulade, the Chairman Committee on Information, Security and Strategy, said the best way to redress the imbalance was for the Federal Government to give additional autonomy to the state governments.

The assemblyman said such a move would fast-track development of infrastructure in the country, and would also curb security challenges.

“We have so many abandoned roads in the country belonging to the Federal Government.

“And these are some of the reasons some Nigerians are calling for a break-up because of negligence and lack of maintenance on these infrastructure.

“The Federal Government must hand over some of these projects to the state governments for proper rehabilitation and maintenance, to bring about even development of infrastructure in Nigeria,’’ he said.

Olulade said the country’s greatest problem was the poor implementation of the budget and government policies, not the presidential system of government.

He said if the budgets were implemented accordingly, the country would not be experiencing a decay in the economy, security challenges, and poor infrastructure.

‘’It is not about system of government but the attitude and mentality of people towards development.

“We have practised parliamentary system of government some years back in this country, and to some people, it failed.

“It’s only true federalism that will work out in this country,’’ the lawmaker said.. (NAN)

Ritualists may have taken over Ogere, Ogun State, on Lagos-Sagamu expressway as a female victim on her way to Lagos from Port Harcourt was kidnapped and taken away at gun point for slaughter.

Her fresh corpse was later found close to the point where she was kidnapped two weeks later, with vital organs of her body, including tongue, breasts and clitoris missing and Vanguard gathered that this is the second of such incident occurring in the area in three weeks

The victim, Miss Tonia Ibelefa, 25, was travelling in company of two male relations in a private car when the incident occurred.

Eyewitness told Vanguard that the armed ritualists blocked the expressway, dragged the University of Port Harcourt graduate out of the car and took her into the bush, adding that the two male family members with the girl surrendered her at gun point.

“She is the one we want and you must surrender her,” the ritualists told the two men, according to the witness.

The witness said the matter was immediately reported to the police in the area who launched a manhunt for the criminals to no avail.

Messages were also said to have been sent to the girl’s family in Port Harcourt who also reported the case to the police who immediately declared a case of missing person.

Thinking that it was a case of kidnap, the family waited to hear from the abductors but got no information about her whereabout.

However, the ritualists last Thursday called the parents through the number obtained from their victim’s phone, advising them to pick up the corpse of their daughter at a junction very close to where the incident happened.

Elder sister of the deceased confirmed that that family had since recovered the corpse, which still looked very fresh at the time of recovery, giving an indication that she was not killed immediately she was kidnapped-via VANGUARD

Any Nigerian who stays in Bauchi State for seven years or more becomes an indigene of the state with all attendant rights and privileges, Governor Isa Yuguda assured yesterday as he vowed to uphold the provision of the Nigerian Constitution which confers such rights on non-indigenous inhabitants of states in the country.

Speaking during a courtesy visit, the Governor boldly declared that there are no non-indigenes or settlers in Bauchi State because even those who have not stayed for up to seven years in the state are regarded as being “in transition” to indigenous status.
