Stick with your Bachelors. My personal opinion.

To avoid unnecessary questions.

Ordinarily, after masters... Your next progression should be Phd.

You mean I should hide my Master's degree entirely?

If yes, having had my bachelor's since 2012, will the 10 years in-between not generate questions too?

Your category is B.

By the way, I hope you have a reasonable explanation for going for another masters? Because they may ask you about that.

Thank you for your response. I thought about the second masters thing too and I asked a friend who is in Germany. He said the most important is the documents, that if I have everything complete, then the questions and answers is by the way. Can I rely on that counsel?

My course has the option of a joint post baccalaureate certificate program, without extending my study duration. Is it likely that taking that option of additional program comes at no extra cost to the COA on my I-20?

It is not stated on the program page. I've mailed the department twice now but no response.

Please help, with a general idea

This is exactly how my interview happened on 25th June

Visa Approved✅
Emergency appointment
Location: Abuja
VO: White man

School: Illinois institute of technology

Program: Masters in Advanced Manufacturing, Automation and Control systems

COA: $49888
Funding: $11000

Deficit covered with Mpower Loan and Personal Savings.

I forgot to sign my i20. I have to sign it in front of the VO

The two persons before me were denied.

VO: Hi, Good morning, how are you?

Me: I'm fine and you?

VO: Cool, pass me the documents.

Me: I gave him only my passport.

VO: (He smiled) I mean pass me those documents you are with.

Me: Oh! I wasn't aware of that, sorry. I then passed my DS160 and i20

VO: I see you are going for Manufacturing Engineering.

Me: No! I'm going for Advanced Manufacturing with a specialization in Automation and Control Systems.

VO: Looked at his computer to confirm what I filled in DS160 and nodded.

VO: What is your highest qualification?

Me: Bachelors of Engineering, I studied Mechanical Engineering, I graduated in the year Bleep.

VO: Looked at his computer again and nodded

VO: What have you been doing since then?

Me: I've been working in the Oil and Gas Industry.

VO: I can see you worked as a Non-- (I didn't allow him to finish, I completed the sentence for him)

Me: Yes! I previously worked as a Non-destructive Testing Engineer

VO: He looked at his computer again and nodded. He now picked up my i20

VO: I see you have a Loan ( I didn't wait for him to finish, I had to complete the sentence for him)

Me: Sure, I secured a fully approved education loan from Mpower Finance. It will be paid directly to my school upon arrival.

VO: How much is the Loan

Me: $35000

VO: Great! He Nodded! Your family will give you $4000

Me: Sure, my aunt Mrs xxxx will be supporting me with $4000, I will also be supplementing it with my personal savings.

VO: He looked at his computer again and confirmed my aunt's name on my DS160, kept on nodding

VO: What does she do?

Me: She is a real estate investor. She buys and sells lands. She also develops them into estates.

VO: I can see you are genuine! (We both smiled). I will be keeping your passport. He gave me a white paper

He was telling me bout COVID 19 restrictions and Port of entry, I didn't hear anyother thing. I kept on saying. Okay!!. When he was done talking, I told him Thank you!, Bye and have a nice day.

VO: you too

No Document was asked

----------------------------------------
Note:

1) Know your DS160 and make sure you filled the DS160 by yourself without error.

2)Know your funding.

3) If possible, get relevant work experience

Be Confident and see this as a discussion not just question and answer.

How does mpower loan work? Anyone that has the knowledge can shed light on it please

I think you should have stuck to what is written on the i20 and then narrow down to your research interest. What was written on my i20 is also different from the name of program and what I filled on the DS 160, however when the VO asked for the name of the program, I said what is on the i20 and talked about my research interest in that program.

If I understand you well, you filled the correct name of the program on DS160 but mentioned the one on I20 during interview. Right?

If yes, could the disparity between DS160 and I20 not have caused problem too? Or VOs don't really check the course on DS form?

congratulations!
Mine was not not approved and I am going for PHD with funding and $2500 deficit.
I’m still surprised but the only thing the consular was asking about is why the course on my I20 is different from what I said I’m going for and I explained that it’s the Umbrella/ Sevis code for courses related to mine.
I already sent an email to my school explaining cuz I’m not sure I understand why he was just focused on that

This issue was raised in a group I belong to and it was concluded that even the VOs are aware of the reason for this disparity, that it is not a problem.

I now see that it is a problem

Please help me check this out. Is it a good answer during visa appointment?

VO: How many schools did you apply to?

Me: I applied to Western alone. I got the admission early, in April, when the application window is still open for other schools. The application window at Western was actually earlier than other schools. Having compared the programs in a couple of other schools, I decided to stick with Western as the program details suit my career goals very well. I would have applied to other alternatives if Western had not accepted me.

Please I need d gurus to help me vet my proposed transcript

I'm 30+ years

Transcript
Me: Good morning. How are you doing today?
VO: Good morning. I’m fine

VO: Why are you going to USA?
Me: I am going to the US to study for Master of Science in Quantitative Economics at Western Illinois University, Macomb

VO: Why WIU?
Me: The QE program at Western perfectly suits my career goals. The program is tailor-made for my career due to many reasons. Firstly, the structure of the program is flexible, to prepare students for a wide range of career paths. Then there is the opportunity to run a joint certificate in business analytics program, which is designed specifically for professional economists. I was also fascinated by the testimony of Mark Zobel, of the bank of America who said he found the degree to be widely accepted and well respected. If the degree can be well respected in the US, then it will be more respected here in Nigeria. He also said members of faculty give individual attention to students, which is what any student will aim for.
(This is actually a strong point for me, because these facts are real and they truly fascinate me about the course. But is my talk here not too much?)

VO: How did you know about this school?
Me: It was recommended to me by my pastor’s son, who studies in University of Illinois, Chicago

VO: Which course?
Me: PhD in biomedical and health informatics

VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to Western alone. I got the admission early, in April, when the application window is still open for other schools. The application window at Western was actually earlier than other schools. Having compared the programs in a couple of other schools, I decided to stick with Western as the program details suit my career goals very well. I would have applied to other alternatives if Western had not accepted me.

VO: Why USA?
Me: The standard of education in the US is world-class. USA degrees are well respected all over the world and getting such a degree will give me a competitive edge in the labour market in Nigeria.

VO: What will this degree do for you?
Me: This degree will help me to achieve my career goals, which is to become a successful professional economist. I aspire to consult for federal agencies like nnpc, nepc, CBN et cetera, later in my career.
Or
This degree will help me to achieve my career goals, which is to become a successful professional economist. I aspire to hold high calibre positions like MD of nnpc, DG of nepc, Governor of CBN or representative of Nigeria in international organizations, later in my career.
VO: What do you do?

Me: I am a ……..in ……….company. My responsibilities are to promote, market and achieve sales of company products. I also educate farmers and other end users on safe and effective use of the products.
VO: How is this degree related to your job?

Me: This degree will help me to participate more actively in price formation, market analysis, cost reduction and other business decisions. My company is a private business that thrives on profits. So, I hope to be more relevant in the success of the company as a business outfit.

VO: What is your highest qualification?
Me: Masters degree in agricultural and resource economics

VO: So why another masters and not PhD?
Me: I want a career change. My first love has been economics. I was prevailed upon by my parents to study agricultural economics, which is principles of economics applied to agriculture. But I now work and I’m being seen as an agriculturist and not as an economist, family and friends also refer to me as an agriculturist. In my current job, I go to farm, I train farmers, which are not my passion. So, I want to go into mainstream economics and launch my career as a professional economist by getting this degree.
Or
Me: This Master’s program is professional-oriented and I’ll also be trained on business analytics, a training I have never had before. I need to broaden my horizon in the field of economics, because of the career success I aspire to have. I want to be relevant in economics and the business environment. Some of the courses I’ll study now, I’ve not studied them before. Also, having two Masters degrees will be a plus to my profile, to get high calibre positions in the future. Interestingly, my role models also had Master’s degrees from the US.

VO: Will you do PhD later?
Me: I’ll do PhD later, to enhance my career prospects, with a view to getting high calibre positions in the future. But my immediate plan is to get the MS in QE and come back to Nigeria to work for a couple of years to gain relevant experience

VO: What is your plan after graduation?
Me: I plan to come back to my current place of work in Nigeria, in a higher and more relevant position. I’ll continue working with them and will compete for more relevant positions in or outside the company to advance my career.

VO: Did you contact any professor?
Me: Yes, I contacted Dr William Polley who specializes in my area of research interest.

VO: Who is your sponsor?
Me: My elder brother

VO: What does he do?
Me: He is a businessman, oil and gas business and he is a political analyst as well. (Should I use political analyst or political consultant?)

VO: Are you married?
Me: Yes, I’m married, with 2 kids

VO: What does your wife do?
Me: She does business. She trades in female wears and accessories

VO: Congratulations. Your visa is approved. Pick your passport at the circled location after three days.
Me: Thank you
