By Adeniyi Ogunfowoke Change is the only constant thing in life. The modus operandi of doing business in Nigeria has significantly been disrupted since the entry of eCommerce. One of the areas that the impact of ecommerce is currently being felt is in the prices of goods and services. Gone are the days when shoppers have to visit physical stores or markets to haggle about prices. Sometimes, the prices at these stores are so outrageous that you end up either buying the product at an exorbitant face price, or buying a low-quality product because it is cheaper or you simply return home empty-handed. If any of the aforementioned happens to you, you are in a no-win situation. Presently, a millennial or tech-savvy person who wants to buy anything is most likely to visit an ecommerce store. Apart from the fact that you will get a quick and real-time idea of what you intend to buy, you have the opportunity of comparing the prices of different brands in the same product category. Offline vs Online Prices The prices of goods and services online are not hidden. It is visible for everyone to see and of course, ecommerce companies like Jumia have made efforts to get shoppers and deal-scavengers the best price. Interestingly, to give you assurances that you are being offered the best price, Jumia recently ran a campaign tagged ‘Last Price Campaign’. The objective was to offer customers the very best prices on over 1,000 iconic products across all categories on its platform. This is the level of guarantee that ecommerce companies are giving their customers who always desire the best price. In fact, competition in the ecommerce space is also driving down the prices. There are many online stores who want a chunk of the market. One way to attract with the customers is by offering them the best price. So, beyond the convenience of being able to book a hotel or buy an item at any time of the day, an ecommerce store like Jumia will offer the best price on good and services. And since Jumia is now an ecosystem, shoppers have the opportunity of receiving the best deals on travel, food, and services. To lend credence to this, if you book directly with the hotel, you will be getting the exact rates of the rooms. Conversely, if you book with an online travel agency like Jumia's hotel and flight services, you will get a discounted price because they already negotiated the best price on your behalf. In addition to this, customers can take advantage of coupons and vouchers. Currently, it appears as if the price war is not between offline and online stores but among online stores. For the offline stores, shoppers have the advantage of haggling prices. The truth is that not many people want to go through this. But, if you decide to visit a departmental store, you simply accept whatever price you are offered. No negotiation...that is the last price. Here, you cannot blame the brick and mortar store. Factors such as rent, electricity, payroll, fixtures and shrinkage loss all contribute to the gross margin and overhead of doing business in a shopping centre or elsewhere. This is why many offline stores are moving online. That's not saying that these things don't affect online retailers. They do, but online stores have a relatively better return on investment when compared with offline stores. This is perhaps another reason to shop online as you have the virtual chances to visit different websites to get the best price. The biggest shopping festival of the year: Black Friday Black Friday, which is usually held in November is the biggest shopping festival in the world. A time to enjoy 'crazie' discounts on products and services. Nigerians have caught the Black Friday fever that they now save to cash in on the sales. The fact remains that shoppers will get the best Black Friday deals and prices online and in the same vein, the goods will be delivered at their doorsteps. This is not the case with offline stores and if you factor in their high prices, it is advisable to stick with online shopping. More importantly, the 'shopping madness' associated with Black Friday will be ultimately bypassed. Can every day be Black Friday? Thousands of customers will really love every day to be Black Friday. Clearly, this is not possible because fantastic deals and discount are usually one-off and they are only offered on Black Friday. Regardless, customers will still get the best deals. As earlier mentioned, competition is impacting price and it has helped online stores to offer the best available price. The government of newly-elected governor of Ekiti state, Dr Kayode Fayemi has felt compelled to deny rumours that it has received a huge sum of money within a week. Read the press statement next: Ekiti has not received any money from FG The attention of Ekiti State Government has been drawn to some malicious reports from some quarters that the new administration has received N30 billion from the Federal Government in the last one week. We would have ignored this baseless rumour that is being circulated on social media by some unscrupulous individuals, but for the sake of members of the public that could be misled in the process. Growing up in Nigeria, you would agree that money is usually not the topic discussed with teenagers becoming young adults. Money is only discussed when it is needed by someone or when it has been misplaced or wrongly spent. Every other thing in between like budgeting, how to makes wise money decision, long term money goals, short term money goals, savings and most importantly investing, is usually not discussed with young adults in Nigeria except but a small percentage. As a young Nigerian in your 20s, you would usually fall within one of these four categories; a fresh graduate, a just discharged corp member, an employee at the edge of kicking off your career, or an entrepreneur trying to figure out how to get started. Regardless of where you belong, you must have accepted and come to terms with the money truths, so it’s time to start getting serious about managing your money and here is how to get started. Educate yourself By now you’ve probably realized that the education system has done a terrible job at teaching anything related to financial literacy, except of course you studied something relating to finance. But don’t worry, managing your money is simple once you educate yourself. Start by reading a book about personal finance, but be deliberate about it. if you want to be an entrepreneur, read books by successful entrepreneur an how they managed their money, as a career person, read books about successful executives and how they managed money. That way you don’t get confused when you want to apply it to yourself. Make a realistic budget This is the starting point for personal finance, yet many people struggle with it. One of the reasons people struggle with justifying their spending is because they do not have a budget or do not set a realistic budget. Also, a lot of young Nigerians get carried away by the salary they earn that they don’t bother to account for it. Before you can put together a realistic budget, you must be able to track your spending, all of it. Know the needs you spend on and the wants you are likely to spend daily. Prioritize what is important to your survival first before adding your fun and splurge expenses. Though you might be able to afford some splurge, but ensure they are trimmed so you won’t spend more than you earn. Pay yourself first This rule was first mentioned in the book ‘The richest Man in Babylon’ by G.S Clason and it is the start of financial freedom. This applies to both short and long term savings. This includes saving for buying of a car, your wedding ceremony, vacation and even retirement savings. By paying yourself first you are paying down for the future so when you need those things, you would be able to pay with ease. It also means your future needs goals would always be met. Money in your 20’s can be difficult to manage so don’t fall into the trap of spending first and then saving if you have something left over. Build your emergency fund Building your emergency fund can be tough in your 20’s since your pay is usually not that fantastic, but don’t underestimate the importance of saving for one. Anything can happen, you might need medical attention that your HMO would not cover that’s if your organization has one in place. Yu might need to get an accommodation, in case you are still leaving with your parent or some friends. Therefore, for these unexpected things, make your emergency fund part of your budget. Start Investing It is funny how a lot young Nigerians believe investing is something that should be considered when one is approaching their 40s or 50s when they have millions in their account. As a matter of fact investment is the last thing to be spoken about when talking about money. The truth is, investing is now easier and anyone can start an investment plan. Financial institutions have now made it easier for anyone to start an investment, just find the one that is verified and effective and start investing. Finally, one thing to note is that you can’t compare yourself with your peers and what you do with your money now could have a lasting impact on your financial future. With an outstanding CGPA of 3.89 the graduate of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT), Islamiyat whose parents are petty traders and native of Ibese town in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State, proved that education for the girl child is not a waste but a worthy investment that is assured of deserving victory and commendation. The Rector, Arc. Olusegun Aluko in his welcome address stated that, the graduands are the 35th set of the institution numbering 3,028 both at National and Higher National Diplomas (ND and HND), out of which 171 made distinction, 965 upper credit, 1,394 lower credit and 498 made pass. We are sending you out as problem solvers and solution initiators. We expect you to take up the courage to apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired as nothing can be done in life without courage’’. The Rector added, ‘’this occasion marks the beginning of another endeavour in your life. It is the foundation upon which you have to build the edifice of your career. He said in his welcome remarks, “I am sure that today all graduands will feel fulfilled at the successful completion of their academic pursuit”. “I want to passionately advise you graduands to think more of how to stand on your own by being job creators, rather than job seekers that maybe long in coming your way. I wish, therefore, to equally appreciate parents and guardians of these graduands for giving them all the necessary support that got them to this important level of their professional and academic lives”.
