Politics › Future Assured At 3: Aisha Buhari Vows To Do More by Opinionated(op): 3:27pm On Oct 28, 2018
Wife of the President, Dr. Mrs. Aisha Muhammadu Buhari has pledged to continue championing the cause of women and children. She made the pledge during an event to mark the 3rd anniversary of the Future Assured Programme at the Banquet Hall of the State House on Saturday 27th October, 2018.

Mrs. Buhari was happy that the programme has made such giant strides in such a short time, and thanked partners that have made it possible.

She spoke of the programme’s engagement in addressing the deteriorating health status of women, youth and children, working to reduce the rate of maternal, neonatal and child mortality. She quoted nutrition, lack of health education, lack of clean drinking water and poverty as the culprits; leading the programme to provide clean drinking water, nutrition supplements and health screening exercises against killer diseases like breast and cervical cancer, diabetes, kidney disease and hypertension in many parts of the country. She also spoke of interventions in deworming children.

Speaking on the programme’s involvement in empowerment, Mrs. Buhari said poverty had to be tackled through deliberate programmes to develop entrepreneurial skills and provide women and youth with working tools. She mentioned rice mills, fish dryers, and groundnut extruders as well as grinding mills, sewing machines, rickshaws and spaghetti makers. Mrs. Buhari also spoke on the effort of the programme in the protection of human rights of women and children against abuse, violence and rape as well as supporting surgeries and advocacy on conditions like intersex and hydrocephalus.

Mrs. Buhari said the event recognizes that many Nigerians “are working to change lives like the programme is doing and need to be emulated. Some of those recognized and honoured include DCP Abba Kyari, a police officer, for uncommon dedication to duty, Ruona Meyer, a journalist for producing a documentary on Codeine, leading to its ban, Tobore Ovuorie, for her report on human trafficking. Corporate organizations like FlexiSAF Foundation were also honoured for innovation and social service.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Federal Ministry of Health, UNFPA and Friesland Campina.

Highlights of the event were the cutting of the birthday cake and unveiling of the Future Assured Magazine as well as a platform to promote youth creativity.

The event was attended by wife of the Vice President, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, government officials, wives of State Governors and members of the Diplomatic Corp.

Sports › Pitch To Bench: The Trials Of Victor Moses by Opinionated(op): 2:39pm On Oct 28, 2018
By Tijjani Abdulsalam

Football is a game of contrasting, yet complimentary circumstances, whether one looks at it from the perspective of an individual player, a team or an entire league system. Teams rise and fall, golden, trophy-laden eras make way for barren, trophy-less runs. Players come and go, and even in their active years, players attain varying levels of prominence before the sun sets in. These phenomena are, to some extent, natural and expected. No one realistically expects footballers to remain prominent at the highest level for endless years. However, when the transition from importance to inconsequentiality seems so fast like a flash of lightning, then it may stir up a few discourses here or there. This is the exact case of Victor Moses.

It is no secret that Moses owes the glittering past of his Chelsea career to one man and one man only – Antonio Conte. With a looming crisis in his maiden season following two consecutively vital defeats, the Italian embarked on a desperate search for a piece to fill in the blank left-wing-back space of his beloved 3-4-3 formation, a search which yielded a reborn Victor Moses. The Nigerian slotted into his new role seamlessly and executed his duties with the ease, expertise and efficiency of one who had played in the same role all his career. Plaudits flowed in from all corners as Conte’s Chelsea team, with Moses a key component, took teams apart week in-week-out and deservedly claimed the league title that year. Failure to retain the league the following season did not diminish the importance of Victor Moses, as he was a regular feature even when the 3-4-3 as a system, gradually lost its fear-factor and potency. And then the sun set in… only this time, not at sunset.

As it so happens naturally with the change of a manager, heads would roll, as the new gaffer tweaks the team to suit his footballing philosophy and vision. That Maurizio Sarri favors a traditional four at the back is enough to shut out Victor Moses, as this effectively eliminates the need for a wing-back (WB). In an era of overzealous and overlapping defenders, the right-back (RB) and left-back (LB) are licensed to burst forward where necessary to provide extra attacking outlets for the team. He also favors a short-passing game that relies on skillful players who are able to work tricks with the ball on their feet, take on and displace defenders to open up spaces.

In reality, the LWB role that Moses so excelled in does not require an exceptional winger or defender, both of which, unfortunately Moses was neither. It is a role that requires more of stamina to traverse the length of the wing as necessary and a good sense of timeliness and discretion to know when to join the attack or defence and when to pass the ball or move with it. The offensive impact of Moses was not so key, and perhaps, further diminished within those two years, for a traditional forward man, irrespective of a couple of goals he scored. Essentially, Chelsea’s wide men – Hazard, Pedro and Willian, and sometimes, Costa in Conte’s first season, not only knew what to do with the ball once it got to them but were also better doing it, compared to the Nigerian. This is largely the reason Moses has fallen behind all three in the pecking order since his ‘customized’ position was shut out by Sarri.

Victor Moses has been restricted to midweek cup appearances to prove his mettle up front and no matter what anyone thinks, an exceptional performance in a Cup competition against a Championship side for instance, may not be enough to convince Sarri of his ability to perform better than any of, say, Pedro or Willian in a key league match days later. Hazard’s position is not even debatable at this point, not against Victor Moses. The transition from importance to inconsequentiality has indeed been quite steep and brutal for the Nigerian and his case was not helped by an underwhelming individual performance at the World Cup in Russia. Football itself can be so cold and brutal and at times like this, a revaluation of options becomes imperative.

Fairly speaking, Victor Moses has done more than enough, over the course of his career in the English top flight to earn a move to a top half side and command some level of presence. He, however, has to do more to rediscover his attacking instincts which was lost to the world for the two years he played under Conte. His continued stay at Chelsea under the present circumstances may not help his current and future cause. Not many would bet on those present circumstances getting any better within the foreseeable future.

By Professor Yemi Osinbajo SAN

When I was 10 years old, there was a girl in my class who I was quite certain at the time that I could give my life. So I wrote her a lovely poem over a weekend; I wrote the poem on Friday and finished it on Saturday. And it was, if I may say so myself, a work of sheer genius. It ended with the dramatic words; “your warm embrace may be the last desire of my heart before I die!”

I tucked it in my school bag and looked forward with a heart filled with love for Monday, to present to the object of my affections.

My mum, while cleaning out the bag, found the letter, and all hell broke loose. Needless to say, she beat the poetic genius out of me that terrible afternoon.

But that’s not the end of the story. True love as you know, will survive even the worst brutality. So, I bore my injuries as a worthy suffering for my beloved. On Monday morning, I found the best opportunity to give her a freshly written version of the poem. I turned away as she took the letter, I didn’t want to behold the sheer pleasure as she read it, but as I turned around, I noticed that she had actually handed the poem over to the teacher and she was pointing at me!

While my physical bruises have healed from that experience, from as you can imagine, what happened with the teacher, my capacity for writing romantic poetry had been greatly diminished.

Fantastical Futures is the audaciously inspirational theme of this iteration of the Ake Arts & Book Festival. Why do we in today’s world, dare to hope for a future so fantastic that it is described as fantastical? The reason it is, if I may offer one, is that there is for those who have cast this great vision; Lola, her friends and collaborators, they’ve have not allowed their vision to be beclouded by the cataracts of discouragement that so easily beset us. Two of those cataracts to our vision are worthy of mention.

The first is a disdain for introspection, which has just come over time, that capacity for deep thought, and making that the basis of planning and action. It is a disdain for introspection that causes our elite to spend or embezzle all the cash and opportunities of the present and make it the burden of a leaner future to pay for our corruption and carelessness.

A failure to interrogate the past, coupled with a reluctance to explain the benefit of deferring gratification. Is the creative sometimes, unable to stick to a cause because it may no longer be popular?

Niyi Osundare, the poet I’m sure we’re all familiar with, captures this elite inability to defer gratification in the provocative poem titled “Eating Tomorrow’s Yam”.

And I quote a portion of it, he said: “There is only one left in the village barn, the prodigal calls for a knife ‘what shall we eat tomorrow’, the people ask, ‘if we finish all the yam today just how shall we feel when the dunghill has relieved stomachs of their improvident burden? And says the prodigal: ‘tomorrow will take care of itself, how can we know the next day if we die of hunger today?”

The recursive one step forward two steps backwards of our histories, especially in Africa, has caused Prof. Tanure Ojaide, and I’m sure you’re all familiar with him as well, in his angry style, to ask “What poets do our leaders read?”

Again, Tanure Ojaide in his poem, “No longer our country”, remonstrates, and I quote him; “We have lost it, a country we were born into, we can now sing dirges of the commonwealth only of yesterday. We have a country that is no longer our own.”

But even he, that is Ojaide, will agree that men and women, not spirits build societies. Which leads me to the second cataract that blurs our vision. Imagine the failure to recognize the responsibility of the individual, especially the gifted individual.

Does the artist have a responsibility to society beyond that of the ordinary citizen? Is there a civic tax payable on talent? Does the fact of your genius place upon you, a moral burden to attempt to use the powerful voice of your art to fight for the soul of the land, especially to fight for the soul of the land from whence you came?

To take moral positions, are you by virtue of your intellect and creativity a moral agent? Or are you not? Can you or not be neutral? Can you be politically neutral? Can you in the face of so much that needs to be done, poverty, deprivation, and injustice, stay politically neutral? Can Africa afford to have its best talents wearing halos of political innocence and saying “let us leave politics to the scoundrels?”

There is a growing impatience of the deprived millions of our people with the elite, which includes all of us in this room; the bombs tied to the 11-year-old body of Safiaru a malnourished girl, who has never been to school, cannot distinguish between a lawyer like Yemi Osinbajo or a writer like Molara Wood. The bomb does not discriminate!

Two things

Earlier this year, the government established the Technology and Creativity Sector Working Group: a policy committee of Federal Government Ministers and Heads of Agencies with Creatives, Tech and Entertainment business owners.

The group meets to work on policy, including rules and regulations regularly. So, we do have now, a policy group, who takes into account the sorts of views that Creatives may want especially in formulating policy and that is so for persons of technology as well. So, I think there is plenty of room for expression, especially the way we want to see policies shaped that could affect our Creatives and could affect those involved in technology.

The last thing, did you enjoy the story I told earlier? It was fiction. I wish us all a fantastical future!

I like what you wrote, but your opinion is definitely not for a common family man earning the pathetic 18000 naira minimum wage. Those ones can't afford to even create a budget.
They can actually, if you are going to spend the money, you might as well plan how you will spend it, that's part of budgeting.
Investment › How To Manage Having A Single Income by Opinionated(op): 12:19pm On Oct 27, 2018
Let’s face it, a lot of families in Nigeria depend on one source of income which is usually from the husband. And a lot must at one point or the other deal with living on one stream of income due to various reasons which may include the wife quitting her job to take care of the kids, unexpected loss of job from either of the couple, or the decision to start a new career path which might require taking some academic courses to be qualified. However, the case may be, the first few months of depending on one source of income would be the longest and the toughest if you are not prepared for it.

You might not need this now, but whenever this becomes inevitable, you would need to prepare well ahead for those months of depending on one source of income and below are some guidelines to get started.

Update your budget

This seems obvious, but many people still don’t have a budget. Without a budget in place, it’ll be near impossible to keep things on track. The first thing you would need to do is to update your budget based on the new income. For instance, if you have been budgeting on a joint income of N600, 000 and you would need to live on a single income of N400,000, you would need to also cut your budget to accommodate just the things the new income can afford. You can no longer live a N600, 000 lifestyle on a N400,000 income, it just won’t work.

Prioritize things

When setting your budget, you have to be ruthless. Focus on your fixed needs, and cut off the things you do not need. This is the time to stop hanging out regularly and paying the bills for the tight G’s. Even if you can afford it, you would still need to cut some if not all of the extra splurges off because you are not quite certain of how long you might need to live on one source of income. To make this work more effectively, assume you have no savings (that’s if you had one before) because, at this point, your savings automatically becomes your emergency fund. If you had no savings before, well, you would have to start one now. Though it would not be as much, it’s still something.

Become a DIY Pro

The truth is, some of the things you are quick to call a repairman for are things you can do yourself. You can tighten the pipe to the kitchen zinc when it becomes loose and also fix the blocked drainage in the bathroom without calling the plumber, all you need is a plunger. And not only that, you can make your own smoothie or coffee without paying too much for just a cup when you can have a jug in the refrigerator. Moreover, since one person would be home more, you can go to the market and get the foodstuff and other things yourself. This also means you would be doing the cooking yourself, instead of eating out every day, and we all know eating out in Nigeria especially in Lagos is quite affordable, but not cheap. Therefore, for those minor things that cost extra Naira here and there, do it yourself. But this does not mean you should try the things that require a professional. Call a professional when you are certain you cannot do it yourself.

Start a hustle

If you are the one staying back for maternity reasons, academic reason or whatever reason, you should pick up a side hustle. Start with a hobby or something small that does not require your physical presence. It’s easier now with social media. You can sell something online. Get a supplier, get pictures of the items, and post it online. When you get an order, get a delivery agent to pick up from your supplier and deliver directly to your customer. Not bad right? And you necessarily don’t have to do so much.

Finally, there’s no doubt that dealing with a single income can be tough. You may be forced to make tough decisions, but if you prioritize things and have open discussions with your partner, things will hopefully be easier to manage, but if the needs become overwhelming, seek help fast from a financial institution close to you to ease the stress financially.

Politics › Is President Buhari Right About The Nigerian Media? by Opinionated(op): 7:49am On Oct 27, 2018
By Abdulkabir Olatunji

President Muhammadu Buhari complained recently about the way he believes the Nigerian media has refused to publicise his achievements and by extension that of his government. Speaking to young political appointees in his government at a meeting with them on Wednesday in Abuja, the president expressed his dissatisfaction: ” “I’m very disappointed in the Nigerian press. They didn’t give this government the credit of the ‘Go back to the land’ programme. We have cut down the importation of rice by at least 90 per cent,” he said.

There has been a mixed reaction to this with some people saying his media aides have not done enough in the area of publicizing government programmes while others believe it is just the case of a failing president giving excuses for his failure.

However, I have another perspective on this issue which is that while the majority of the media might not be deliberately going out of its way to hide the Buhari government’s achievements, there are some underlying reasons why progress being made might be under-reported.

First, the prevalence of social media means that journalists are not immune from messages that become viral or popular. Going by patterns in the last 3 years of the Buhari administration, it is obvious that the opposition has a louder voice than the government or its supporters on social media. Hence, at least, until very recently, the messages on social media were largely anti-Buhari with the opposition, its supoorters and sympathizers making every effort to downplay the government’s achievements. Such people would argue for example that N-power is not a viable programme even when evidence suggests the opposite, the same with the government’s school feeding programme that is beginning to gain international attention. In terms of project delivery and initiation of new ones that can really drive economic growth and development like the railways and investments in electricity, there is the same tendency for the opposition inspired social media chorus to insist progress is not being made. Now, if a journalist gets immersed in all of this negativity, they may begin to subconsciously suppress the positives of this government and amplify what the opposition considers the negatives. For example, a lot of the reportage on the killings in Benue state and other states in the middle-belt has been rather unprofessional and problematic if one wants to be brutally honest. Killings in Zamfara state and the state of insecurity which was probably worse around the same time went largely underreported. A case of similar situations, different reactions by the media. Perhaps, because the Benue state situation falls into a prevailing narrative and the Zamfara situation does not.

A second reason that President Muhammadu Buhari’s government might be finding it difficult to get proper reportage on its efforts and achievements in moving Nigeria forward is the fact that a certain part of the media that has become influential especially on the Internet has defined itself by focusing on what is wrong rather than what is going right for Nigeria. Therefore, a check on the headlines promoted by some of the most popular online media in Nigeria will show that stories of scandals and misdemeanour by government officials are actively promoted rather than developmental news. The public that has been nourished on drama over the years demands no less.

Members of the media respond to this criticism by claiming they are only reporting what happens — a fair submission on the surface. However, closer scrutiny shows that the media rarely publishes negative news about itself. So, we do not read stories about how journalists collect and sometimes demand gratification when they are sent to cover events in the corporate world and government itself. One might be tempted to think that journalists have a higher moral consciousness than the rest of society, we rarely read about journalists committing crimes or being involved in scandals. Does this mean they are more disciplined than the rest of society? I opine that this is not quite so, a young journalist told me with a sentiment akin to despair recently that leading media personalities insist on molesting and abusing young women seeking to be trained or start work in the industry. How many media houses have reported this in Nigeria? Almost none.

Then there is the corruption by journalists who are available for a fee to either promote certain causes or kill certain stories. Information and misinformation has become a tradable commodity for this set of journalists and they are plenty in Nigeria.

This article is not meant to suggest that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari is without its problems and blemishes — far from it. It has not always provided factual information in a suitable and timely manner. It has not done enough to engage the social consciousness of Nigerians towards responsible use and sharing of information and of course, people have a right to criticize many of its policies either because they might be bad or could be better.

Ultimately, the government and the media can do better to ensure that the news we get as Nigerians is factual and not contrived to achieve certain objectives that might not be in our collective interest as a people. The media needs to also play its part in nation building and this is not synonymous with negative news by default. There is room for criticism but there should also be equal room for reporting progress and positive ideals.

If there is a world leader that seems capable of polarizing people, it is definitely United State’s president, Donald Trump. People seem to admire or detest him in equal measure in his country and elsewhere.

He definitely has admirers in Nigeria and what is interesting is what foreign media journalist based in Nigeria, Anna Cunningham took to Twitter to share — the news that Nigerians are buying portraits of President Trump in military uniform. Why this is so remains a bit of a mystery. See her tweet next:

Do Nigerians really love Trump? I tracked down the Lagos based artist - Sunshine- he’s had commissions for Trump paintings in military uniform. This one sold quick he says.

Business › How To Grow Your Business Online by Opinionated(op): 5:21pm On Oct 25, 2018
By Egboka Ozioma

Few decades ago, growing a business online may have sounded like a dry joke. But, with the emergence of search engines like Google and Bing, social media sites, websites, mobile apps; the challenge of promoting a business online have long been overhauled.

Don’t sing yet; this is not me saying that online business can be likened to taking local ‘akamu‘ with abundant peak milk. Nevertheless, it is somewhat ‘pappy’.

Growing a business online involves a lot of things which the first is having a goal.

Let’s assume you are an event manager, what exactly do you want to achieve by growing your business on the web?

-More bridal followership on social
-More couples receiving your news later or
- More events to
-Increased web

Acknowledging your goals helps you decide which way would be best fitted for your business growth.

Great ways for putting your business online, and driving more sales include:

Getting Your Business Listed in Online Local Business Directories

Local businesses here refer to people who operate within a physical geographical location, and sell products or services majorly to people within that locality.

Getting your business listed increases the chance of your business popping up when someone searches for that kind of services in your location, e.g. If I am within Amuwo Odofin, and I type on google: Events management companies. Google using my phone enabled GPS will track my exact location and list event management businesses within Amuwo Odofin. Therefore, getting my business enlisted, increases the chance of people seeing it on search engines.

Building a website or Mobile App

Well, mobile internet access is growing in leaps and bounds and most people when they’re on the go prefer to browse with their phones. Creating a website or an app (depending on choice and financial capabilities of the business) for your business could be a great way to achieving your online goals.

It is worthy of note to know that you must make your app or website Mobile friendly. This website acts as an online home for your business where people can come and know more about your business, and even make purchases without meeting you physically.

Your website should therefore be easy to navigate and be fast in loading as online people have little attention life span.

Also your website and app should include your address, phone number, about page, and reviews.

Having a phone number is important should the customer to be decide to call immediately if he’s using a phone.

Your mobile app has features which can utilize the GPS to track when your potential customers are within your geographical location so you can send them a targeted advert. Also it can contain a map to show them the route to your physical office.

You could also include in both your website and app reviews or testimonials by satisfied customers, this would help build trust and encourage patronage.

Social Media Pages

They can be used to replace apps and websites. This depends on individuals. Social media helps you share interesting videos, and pictures with your followers who are interested in the services you offer.

Social media helps for interaction and build of trust between customers and business owners.

Very popular social media Platforms include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn etc.

Online advertising (SEM and SEO)

Having done the above, online advertising helps put your business in front of people.

While SEO increases your search engine rankings and enables that your business appears in people’s search results, SEM enables you to bid for key words so that your business can appear also when people search for related businesses.

Online advertising helps you become more visible, brings your website or even social media pages in front of people. Targeted adverts help you reach

people who are already interested in the kind of business you do, and could contain some offers to encourage them to click on your adverts and patronize you.

Web Analytics

After you have done all the above. You will need to monitor your growth, find what is working, and what isn’t. You may need to know what people do on your website, how much of your goals you have achieved.

This would help you plan your next move, and know how best to keep growing your business. All this can be achieved by the use of web analytics.

Before ending this, it is important to note that growing a business online requires patience and persistence.

Do all those, and you are well on your way to becoming a storm in online business!

Family › How To Prepare For Retirement Without Stress by Opinionated(op): 1:49pm On Oct 25, 2018
As natural as work is, so also is retirement for those who live long enough to an elderly age. So, if it is something you cannot avoid, why not prepare for it? Here are 10 tips to help you plan a stress free retirement.

One day you will retire

You won't be going to work. You won’t have office power any more. No influence or at best, a reduced influence. Your cash flow will also reduce! Check retirement date on your payslip.

Always go for your 30-day annual leave

Whatever you do during your leave, is what you will be doing when you retire. If all you do is to sleep or watch TV, then that’s what you are likely do do in your retirement. Remember the book of Proverbs. A little sleep and a little slumber, so shall your poverty multiply.

Watching Big Brother Naija will not save you heartache in retirement. Learn a trade or a skill during your leave. It will come handy. Spend your after-office hours learning something. Don’t spend it sleeping, Gossiping, watching TV!! Same goes for your weekend. Make them productive. You will thank yourself for spending your time productively.

Invest for your retirement

Your children are not retirement investment. Don’t bank on your children’s support or the support of friends or relations. That’s a BIG risk. It may not happen. Be ready to take care of yourself!! Everyone has his own responsibilities. They won’t be able to help you that much. You will also lose your dignity and respect if you adopt a life of begging.

Start a hobby

Early in your working days to take you along when you retire. Rearing chicken, farming or own a shop. Acquire marketable skills ( not useless paper certificates) Etc

Where shall you retire?

Build yourself a home. Don't retire and start to rent a house or refuse to vacate government house. You will be at the mercy of your landlord at a time when your cash flow is not only reduced but unpredictable!!

Who shall be your dependants?

By the time you retire, your children should be above 18, and self reliant.

Don't retire and stay in a big city unless you can TRULY afford it

You can't continue living in a big city after 60 with limited financial resources. The language and the hustle will be hard for you. Where possible, Relocate to a less expensive town where your reduced take home (pension) can go further.

Have property which can be rented or converted into cash

Have shares that pay good dividends. Plant cash trees. Rear goats, cultivate vegetables etc. these activities will not only give you income but will also keep you healthy.

Live a simple life

If you never built a house at your rural home, dont use your retirement package to build. It is unwise unless you plan to live there on a permanent basis or you are super rich and therefore can afford the luxury. The choice is yours.

Note that many of retirees die early because of the following:

They are Not mentally prepared to retire.
Lack of finances
They Lapse into Depression
They develop Hypertension/ Diabetes because of worries, anxiety and uncertainty "and financial pressures.

Your desk at your work place is not permanent. Plan for your retirement.
