By Muh’d Sani Jahun She sent me a friend request. I viewed her profile first before accepting. I saw that she is a software engineer at Aberdeen airport, Scotland. I was surprised. I checked whether I share many mutual friends with her, so, I can understand the reason why she added me. No, we didn’t. I surprised. I checked her pictures that she had been uploaded, no doubt she is beautiful. On her DP it was her beautiful, attractive, gorgeous picture with Apple Laptop on her lap. She must be a rich woman, I thought. I was thinking either to decline or accept her request. I accepted. What surprised me was how she immediately private messaged me. Saying “Hello, sir I am Jessica from Scotland – UK. I am a software engineer at Aberdeen Airport. I saw your profile picture and I like you, you’re nice guy. Please can you tell me about you?” I first tried to ignored her, but my “ego” would never let me to do this mistake. Neglecting such a pretty, cute, white-faced lady by a young Nigerian bachelor like me is a great offence. Well, I started by ” I am Sani Yakubu, from Jigawa, Nigeria. I am still student.” I concluded, hoping that the question will stop there, but she seemed to be very modest and in fact, she was impressed extremely by my casual introductory. “Which phone are you using?” She asked. “Why?” surprisingly I replied. I wasn’t actually happy with question. “I just want us to chat through Webcam, are you using Apple Laptop or Apple iPhone.” She explained. Anzo gurun, her question didn’t come as surprise to me, because she is the fourth person who asked me exactly the same question. Such people are Nigerian fraudsters scamming people online by pretending to be chatting with people from abroad. You know, Nigerians, sorry Africans, believe that any white person from western world is well-to-do and spend money in abundance, mutanen suna da kudi kamar jujin bola (everyone is rich there). We are wrong. Totally wrong. I didn’t show her I recognized that she wanted to scam me. “I don’t have an Apple iPhone let alone an Apple laptop.” I replied. That was the answer she liked me to give. By the way, she knew it already, 95% of Nigerians use either phones or cheap laptops to come online. Only a few people use Apple iPhone or Laptops to browse. “If you could receive, I could buy an Apple laptop, iPhone and Macro MacBook for you.” she said. I already knew that would be the end of the story. So I asked her how could I receive them if she bought them for me. She said it is simple. She could send them through “Emirate Chicago Airway”. She asked me to send my picture and details. I did. She then ignored me, after some minutes she texted me, telling me that she was already at Electronic Shop buying the items for me. She sent the samples of beautiful Apple laptops and iPhones to me. She asked me to choose my types. I did and thanked her later. An hour later, she sent me a picture of a scanned paper which contained my details and details of where the sent parcel will be received. (Murtala Muhammad International Airport Ikeja – Lagos). she later sent me a parcel picture, containing the picture I sent her. She said, inside the parcel, there were Apple Laptop, iPhone, Macro MacBook and 500 pounds (500 pounds fa? Not even dollars) Ai na zama Allaji. The next day I woke up and I was greeted first with a message, telling me that my parcel was arrived at Murtala Muhammad International Airport through Emirates Chicago Airway, I should call my customer care for individual delivery. I did call. She picked. “Hello sir, (with respect) I am so, so, so at Murtala Muhammad Airport, how may I help you? I explained everything. She asked me to hold on so that she could check if mine was arrived. She checked. It was arrived. She told me I should come and take my parcel myself or send money for individual dispatch. I have never been to Lagos, so I couldn’t risk myself. I complain. But, I have a trusted friend there, so I could send him to receive it, so he can send it to me anytime. She said no. There was my picture on the parcel. So, they could only give the parcel to the person on that picture, or else send it back to sender. My heart can’t believe it. I was afraid, this case might be different with other case I met with this case seems to be true. She was probably true that she sent the parcel as she claimed. I can’t believe it. I repeat. But still I am afraid. Afraid of losing those items. I quickly call that lady again. I asked her how much am I going to pay for individual delivery? She asked to where? Jigawa, I answered. Well it was N27000. Chai? I swore, I haven’t such amount. But she seemed not cared about it totally. I agreed to send the money. So she texted me the Bank’s account details. The details do not in any way seemed like a company’s account. It seemed personal account. I told her she should have sent me the company number instead that personal account number. She said no, that was my dispatcher’s account number. Kayyyy, this woman wants do wayyo for me. I forget her. When I came to my Jessica, she was asking me whether I receive the parcel, I told her no, it was scam. Then she blocked me. Thank God, I am saved. Governor Ambode of Lagos State yesterday addressed a ‘World Press Conference’ where he took a swipe at his rival for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for next year’s gubernatorial elections. He said: “In the last two or three weeks, they have been putting a lot of campaign of calumny on the social media and also disparaging our personalities and characters. But we have been extremely humbled, we have never responded, we have never abused anybody because we believe that there is always a reason for us to come together. We are one family in APC. “Now, the truth is this, the aspirant that is being put up to compete against us is not a fit and proper person. This is the truth. Party leaders and party members have been misled to understand that he is a better candidate than me. I have done everything in the last three years and half to serve people selflessly. This particular aspirant has been arrested for spending fake American dollar in a nightclub and was detained for months. “He also knows that he does not have the competence to do what he is being propelled to do. The records are there in the Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos. This is somebody that has gone for rehabilitation before. We do not want to go so far.” These allegations sent social media abuzz and the governor’s political rival, Jide Sanwo-Olu released the following statement to counter the Ambode’s claims: TIME TO RESPECT THE PEOPLE OF LAGOS STATE AND THE OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR Let it be heard by all that I hold the people of Lagos state with great respect and affection. Their welfare is my utmost concern and it is what drives my pursuit for the governorship nomination of the APC. As such, I also hold the office of governor of our state in high esteem. I shall never consciously do anything that will undermine the dignity of the office nor will I engage in personal attacks against the holder of that officer. My pursuit of office will continue to be based upon issues that matter to Lagosians and not on attacks against someone’s character, even when he attack mine. For anyone to engage in unwarranted character attacks against me, reveals more about that person’s character than it says about mine. Thus, I felt sad for Lagos as I watched Press Conference by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Many things he said was beneath the dignity of our people and the exalted office he now holds. Perhaps the tension and anxiety of the moment got the better of him. If given a chance at cooler reflection of what he said, I am sure he would regret his descent into such low conduct. In this vein, I forgive him and hope he regains his balance and proper comportment no matter the outcome of tomorrow’s contest. After all, we are both here to improve Lagos not to wrestle in its streets. However, I must clear up some inaccuracies in the Governor’s statement. His allegation of that I was arrested for spending fake dollars at a night club in the United States was untrue. In fact, the governor knows I travelled to the United States just last month. I would not have been allowed to travel or even get a visa if I had been involved in what the Governor falsely alleged. That the Governor claimed I underwent some unidentified type of “rehabilitation” at the Gbagada General Hospital was also shameless and untrue. Promulgation of salacious rumor should not be part of the job description of a governor. This is not the stuff of high office. People should question whether itis ethically right for the Governor to turn what should be confidential medical information about a citizen into a weapon of political warfare? But for avoidance of doubt, let it be stated that I never received any treatment whatsoever at the Gbagada General Hospital. Today, instead of making a convincing defense of his performance, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode sought to sow fear into the hearts of Lagosians. But Lagosians are an intelligent and brave people. They can see through the smoke and the fog. I am here not to tear my opponent down but to help build Lagos up. With me, you will hear about progress on education, health, sanitation, proper tax levels, economic development, infrastructure, jobs, public services and other things that enhance the lives of people. I am a serious person and this primary is a serious matter. I have not the time or inclination to attack character when there are so many real issues to address. We will continue to focus on the issues that matter in the lives of the people of Lagos. Lagosians want an answer to the sanitation crisis cast loss of jobs caused by Mr. Ambode’s Visionscape misadventure. Our people will want to know why Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has not been able to build a single General Hospital in the State when his immediate predecessor Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) built 11 General Hospitals. Lagosians are waiting to hear what our solutions are. They want to know why hundreds of competent civil servants got summarily dismissed and how this has undermined public services. As a candidate for the party’s nomination and hopefully as your next governor, my approach will not be to sling insults but to propose solutions to the problems of the day. President Muhammadu Buhari has slammed Nigeria’s elite for what he thinks is their complicity in the mismanagement of the country. He said this while meeting with Nigerians in diaspora in the United States. Read the press release by the presidency next… PRESIDENT BUHARI ASSURES NIGERIANS IN DIASPORA: IF I WIN THE NEXT ELECTION, I’LL LEAVE SOME DIFFERENCE IN THAT OFFICE President Muhammadu Buhari told Nigerians living in America that if he won the 2019 election, and he spent another four years in office, “I will leave some difference in that office.” Meeting with the Nigerian community in the United States of America Thursday on the margins of the 73rd United Nations General Assembly in New York, the President regretted that the elite allowed Nigeria to be mismanaged for 16 years of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) rule, without as much as raising a voice in consternation. “They didn’t say a word,” President Buhari declared. “Under the PTF (Petroleum Trust Fund, of which he was Chairman), we did roads from Lagos to Abuja, to Onitsha, to Port Harcourt. Since then, the roads were not done, between 1999 and 2015, yet the elite did not say a word. “I was called Baba Go Slow. Those who were going fast, where did they get to? “In 1983, military officers gathered, and made me Head of State. I packed the politicians into jail, told them they were guilty until they could prove their innocence. We seized what they had looted, but after I myself was put in detention, the politicians were given back what they had looted. How many elite complained about that? “Three times I contested elections; three times I went to court after the elections were rigged against me. No justice, but I said ‘God dey.’ “It was mainly the ordinary people that stood by me. That is why I am always conscious of them. They are my constituency. Even pregnant women on the queue would fall into labour, go to have their babies, and still come back to vote for me. I will keep doing my best for the country.” The diaspora Nigerians, in their scores, are top flight professionals, drawn from fields like medicine, engineering, sports, the arts, investment, academia, politics, agriculture, transport, education, publishing, and many others. Most expressed the wish to come back home, and contribute to the change making a headway in Nigeria. To which the President replied: “You are contributing to this great country (America). If you want to help back home, invest in education in your constituencies. If you educate people, they won’t then accept nonsense from anybody.” President Buhari said the administration he leads has by and large kept faith with its three key campaign promises; to secure the country, revive the economy and fight corruption. “I’ve tried to do my best since I came,” he stressed, adding: “Security-wise, we are better. Boko Haram still conducts cowardly attacks, but the insurgency is not the same as it used to be. They are terrorists, and have nothing to do with religion. We will continue to deal with them. Ask people in the North-east, especially in Borno State, they will tell you they can sleep with two eyes closed now.” The parley was put together by Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora Matters, and the Nigerian professionals were drawn from different parts of the United States and Canada. Representatives of USA chapters of Nigerians in the Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) also presented awards to President Buhari in appreciation of his performance, urging him to do more. By Abdulkabir Olatunji Sequel to the publication of this story, Suzan Ade Coker refunded our money and we received the alert on Friday evening… I am a co-founder of JARUS & JAN, the startup that owns JarusHub.com, Opinions.Ng, Hotproforum.com and Hostdey.com. As you can probably imagine, we have our hands full managing these sites. However, this story is not about us but about another ‘Internetpreneur’, Suzan Ade Coker who is the founder and chief Administrator of Rant HQ. A popular Facebook group largely made up of Nigerians which has over 1 million members including me. Now, Suzan seems to be interested in commercializing the group, which I don’t have a problem with. In fact, it is something I advocate and encourage more people to do –try to create businesses online. So, she posted about her rates for doing adverts on her group with the following post: Sponsored advert for the next 7days will be 5,000 naira with 3 pictures. 3 pictures n a video is 10,000 naira. #MondayBusiness is still free for adverts. Make Payment to Name: RANTHQ AC: 2109887614 Bank: UBA Inbox me your advert and proof of payment. STRICTLY NO ADVERT ON THIS POST. Our team discussed the merits and demerits of this kind of advertising and decided to contact Suzan for a trial but with the suggestion of a modification –instead of giving us three pictures, we will post only one picture and a link to JarusHub.com in the body of our advert content would replace the other 2. I contacted Suzan and pitched our idea to her, she immediately claimed that would cost N15,000. I told her we would not be willing to pay that in all likelihood. After more discussions in our team, we decided to do the three-picture-ad. Since we already knew the procedure, we went ahead to pay into her account and contact her like she requested in her promotional post requesting for adverts. Now, here comes the drama… Suzan rudely responded that we had inserted a link in our advert. I asked her to identify where because what we had in the content were our phone numbers and email addresses. The others were an image of our website banner that we turned into a sticker, a staff and someone making a presentation. After using rather uncouth language, she claimed she would refund our money on Monday, September 24, 2018. This dispute arose on Saturday, September 22, 2018, the same day we made payment. Her next action was to block me on Facebook messenger. Now these are some of the key points in this encounter: Does Suzan Know the Difference Between a Link or a Banner? Obviously she does not because how does anyone with proper knowledge of the Internet call a jpeg or png file a link? Even after being told, she insisted on this wrong categorization. My assessment is that it is not a case of not knowing but being blinded by greed. She wanted N15,000 when she had clearly stated N5,000 for 3 pictures. How Long Does It Take a Decent Person to Do a Bank Transfer of a Refund? What is even more surprising is that we can forgive Suzan’s ignorance of mixing an image up with a website link. However, what we cannot ignore is her refusal to refund the client as at when due. It is bad enough that you blocked a paying client whose money you are holding claiming you will pay in 2 days. Even worse, 5 days after, you are yet to pay the refund. Even mail from Sambisa to Lagos would in all likelihood have arrived by now. There is little doubt, Suzan has a problem returning people’s money when she willfully refuses to provide a service she advertised. We are optimistic people, maybe before you finish reading this, she would have paid our money. Can Suzan Really Be Trusted? We decided to try her out and see how she delivers as an aspiring Internet businessperson. For us, she has failed the test woefully in flying colours. We advise the public to be very vigilant and aware about handing over money to Suzan based on our experience. We know she claims to do all kinds of charity but leave that for a moment. How is she as a businesswoman? We leave you to make-up your mind. For those that might want to become Internet entrepreneurs, we advise you to learn from this story and never be swayed by public appearances of some social media ‘celebrities’ or influencers. Take your time to do due diligence before transacting business with anybody. We really look forward to Suzan giving the public her side of the story. Thereafter, we can share our chats for the public to get enlightened. We do not just assert, we have proof.
