Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, at the weekend, said the Federal Government was not in a hurry to restart passenger train operations. He disclosed this in a tweet on his Twitter handle @chibuikeAmaechi on Saturday. The minister said the Federal Government of Nigeria was being careful not to make the train operation an instrument for the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in the country. Amaechi spoke amidst concerns from train passengers, especially on the Abuja-Kaduna train as well as the Lagos-Ogun route, on when train services would resume. The Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) had announced the suspension of train services in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country. But speaking on the development, Amaechi said: “We’re not in a hurry to start train operations because of the danger of COVID-19 spread. “When we start, all health and safety protocols must apply. “You will not enter a train if you don’t adhere to our rules. “The train will not move if passengers do not comply.” Daily Trust recently reported that the NRC has developed protocols and guidelines for resumption of operations. Director of Operations of the NRC, Mr. Niyi Ali, had in a chat with Daily Trust, said the passenger services would resume as soon as the ban on interstate movement was lifted by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The NRC, early this month, took delivery of dozens of coaches which were ordered for in March. Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/why-we-are-yet-to-resume-train-services-fg.html |
Chairman of the South South Governors Forum and governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has assured his Edo State counterpart, Godwin Obaseki, of the Forum’s resolve to return him to Government House in September 2020 governorship election. Governor Okowa, who was at the Edo State Government House on Sunday to formally congratulate and welcome Governor Obaseki into the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said the PDP is a great party built around the people and would always work in the interest of the people. Governor Okowa assured that South-South Governors will throw their weight behind Obaseki in the forthcoming election in the state. He appealed to all members of the party in Edo State to ensure they work together to deliver the party in the coming election. “I came here today to felicitate with my brother Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, for joining us at the biggest party in Africa. “I welcome him today because in the spirit of the old Bendel, we are united as brothers. “I want to thank our party people in Edo State for opening their arms to welcome the Governor. “I know that he has been doing a great job in the state with several restrictions and I know that having come to PDP where there are no restrictions, he will do more for the people,” Okowa said. Obaseki joined PDP last week after irreconcilable power tussle with his predecessor and National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, which culminated in his disqualification to recontest a second term on the platform of the APC. He was disqualified by the screening panel of Edo governorship aspirants in Abuja over discrepancies in his academic certificates, a development which has generated political “bad blood” within the leadership and body of the APC. President Muhammadu Buhari says in dealing with the threat posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal Government cannot allow education and learning to take the back seat. He decried that the pandemic had forced school-age children to continue education and learning online as well as through the electronic media. He said this yesterday while joining the international community to celebrate the Day of the African Child. Buhari, in a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, said his administration would continue to ensure that every Nigerian child has access to quality and affordable education by promoting free and compulsory basic education for the first nine years of schooling. He said this year’s commemorative activities with the theme, “Access to a Child-Friendly Justice System in Africa” had moved online due to the global pandemic. Noting that not all children have access to the tools and resources to do this, he said the priority of the Federal Government was to ensure that things get back to normal as soon as possible. Buhari also said the safety of every Nigerian child remained paramount to his administration. He said his government would continue to do all within its means to protect children from violence and abuse. He promised his government’s commitment to protecting children from sexual violence, domestic abuse and exploitation. He expressed concern on the recent spate of sexual and physical violence on the girl-child and directed relevant government agencies to scale up support for victims of violence and ensure that those who have infringed on their rights face the full weight of our laws. According to him, it is the right of every Nigerian child to be protected from sexual or physical violence and abuse, and to enjoy an environment conducive for learning and development. Senate President Ahmad Lawan yesterday faulted the signing of the 2013 agreement on the privatisation of the power sector. He said contrary to Nigerians’ expectation, the privatisation had not yielded desired results in the sector. He spoke in Abuja yesterday during a public hearing themed “Power Sector Recovery Plan and the Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic”, by the Senate Committee on Power. “How did they sign the agreement, not under duress, not with gun on our head, for this kind of huge amount of money when we know you’re not prepared to take the required generation? We shouldn’t have signed it since we didn’t have the capacity, now we are made to cough out N14b monthly, for what? “Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank will be running from pillar to post to raise the money for work not done and yet there are problems we face every day because we’re not able to give our security agencies the kind of weaponry that they need, no manpower, 14m children out of school and then some people are busy collecting this amount of money.” Lawan charged the committee to investigate what happened to the power purchase agreement. He said, “When you have privatization, you have Share Purchase Agreement. This investigation should look at what has happened. “What are the responsibilities and the obligations of the Federal government in the Share Purchase Agreement? What is BPE supposed to do. “And equally and very important, what are the successful investors who are given 11 DISCOs and 6 GENCOs supposed to do and within which time framework. “Government should not be given free money. N1.8trn has been given to DISCOs maybe in their books. The actual money might have been given to the GENCOs. “N1.8trn is a huge amount of money. Is it part of the Share Purchase Agreement that we should be given this kind of money or what are we supposed to do as a government? What is our obligation?” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/power-sector-privatisation-has-failed-lawan.html |

The President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Dr. Samson Ayokunle, has congratulated the new President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem. Ayokunle on Sunday in a statement on his behalf by his spokesman, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for resisting the pressure mounted on him by some forces not to send her name to the Senate for confirmation. “CAN therefore felicitates Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem on her elevation and wishes her a successful tenure in her service to the nation and prays God to grant her wisdom, knowledge, understanding, courage, commitment, good health and sound mind needed to serve and finish strong and well. “We were not unaware of the plot to deny her of the exalted office despite her enviable reputation and credentials but those forces were frustrated with the resolve of the President to ensure justice and fairness prevail over selfish interest,” Ayokunle said. According to him, the confirmation of Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem as the President of the Court of Appeal shows that President Buhari is being sensitive to the aspiration and yearnings of the populace to have a nation where everyone has a sense of belonging irrespective of religious, political and ethnic affiliations. He said, “We at CAN, will not cease to pray for the peace, unity and stability of the country. We will also continue to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari, as well as all our leaders at national, state and local government levels for God’s guidance, wisdom and protection. “We call on Justice Dongban-Mensem to ensure that she lives up to the expectations of God and citizens of this country without fear or favour. That is the only way she can show her deepest appreciation to God for elevating her as well as the goodwill support she gets from the citizens of this country.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/can-commends-buhari-congratulates-dongban-mensem.html |
