The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 has disclosed that it will in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders work out a school resumption plan for the country. The National Coordinator of the PTF, Dr. Sani Aliyu disclosed this at a public hearing held by the House of Representatives Adhoc Committee on COVID-19 on Thursday. He said the delay in schools’ reopening was part of measures to protect vulnerable Nigerians from the pandemic. The coordinator said they want to work out a plan that may allow students who are to write examinations to be allowed so that the next academic session would not be disrupted. Aliyu also said that the decision to restrict gathering in churches and mosque was informed by the fact that most of those who patronise these places of worship are those within the vulnerable Nigerians who may have an underlying illness. In his remarks, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman of the PTF, Boss Mustapha, advised Nigerians to continue observing all precautionary measures. He warned them not to lower their guards in the fight against the pandemic saying that Nigeria has not reached the peak of confirmed cases. A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Edo, Chief Dan Orbih, on Friday asked the All Progressives Congress (APC), to apologise to Edo people over its varying positions on the person of Gov. Godwin Obaseki. Orbih, the immediate past chairman of the PDP in Edo, made the call in Benin while reacting to the disqualification of Obaseki from APC Governorship primaries for June 22. The screening committee for the ruling party announced that the Edo governor was unfit to contest the primaries saying it could not vouch for some certificates he claimed to possess. Orbih upbraided the ruling party for deliberately playing politics on the issue of the governor’s qualification saying that it took various positions to please the national leadership. He said in view of this, the APC owed it as a moral obligation to apologise to Edo people. He said, “the APC owes it as a moral obligation to apologise to the people of Edo State for deceiving the people on the issue of the governor’s certificate. He noted that at one time the governor was very much well qualified to govern the state and was praised for being a financial expert. “Now the party has changed position essentially because of the problems the governor has with the National Chairman. “For me, the fact is that the people of Edo have not only been deceived, but they have also been made to bear the brunt of the deficiency in governance on account of the distractions that the governor has been subjected to through the dispute with the national chairman. “The party as such owes it as a moral duty to apologise to the people of Edo State before it can be taken as serious in any competitive bid for the votes of the electorate. “We are sick and tired of APC serial certificate scandals,” the chieftain said. The Obaro of Kabba, Oba Solomon Owoniyi, has appealed to Kogi State Government to relax the lockdown imposed on Kabba/Bunu, the home local government of the two COVID-19 index cases. Governor Yahaya Bello had ordered the total lockdown of Kabba, following the announcement of the cases by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) for COVID-19 infections. * Many feared killed as gunmen attack bank, police station in Kogi * COVID-19: Kogi rejects NCDC’s claim on 3rd case Bello said the lockdown would enable the State COVID-19 Response Team to carry out house-to-house test amid controversy over the NCDC’s claim. The Obaro of Kabba said yesterday that the lockdown which has entered the second day is already taking a toll on the people, with farms being encroached upon by herders. “We are appealing to Governor Yahaya Bello to reconsider the lockdown. “All the protocol can be observed without total lockdown because within 24 hours of the lockdown, the effect is already telling on my people who live and dwell on daily income. “We cannot survive the 14 days lockdown as 48 hours will be very devastating to us. “The exercise should be given a human face in the interest of our innocent citizens who continually attested to the fact that there is no coronavirus in the local government. The paramount ruler cautioned against the politicisation of the matter by indigenes of Kogi western senatorial district, urging them to be mindful of their utterances. “It is high time people should desist from politicising issues in the state. “Governorship election has been conducted and won; this is the time to join hands with the winner to move Kogi State forward in the interest of development. “The current administration in the state has no enemy in Kogi west and nobody has the mandate of the people to utter statements that are not in line with peaceful coexistence of the entire district. “We don’t want Kabba town to be used as a battleground to settle scores or political differences,” the royal father said. Speaking, Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr Kingsley Fanwo, who led health workers to the palace of the monarch, said that the state government declared the total lockdown to enable it to conduct contact tracing of the alleged COVID-19 outbreak in the local government. Air Chief Visits Sultan, Urges Synergy Security agencies have increased surveillance in several villages in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, after bandits within the week, killed 74 people in the area, residents of the affected communities told Daily Trust in Sokoto yesterday. “There are many security personnel now and they are very vigilant, soldiers and mobile policemen are around,” a resident said. Another resident said: “They are monitoring movement of people in Garki and nearby Dan Aduwa villages from where almost everyone has fled to Sabon Birni.” The residents appealed to the authorities to clear the surrounding bushes which they noted had become a hideout for the attackers. Some displaced persons were camped at the Township Model Primary School in Sabon Birni while others are staying with their relations elsewhere, our correspondent gathered. According to the residents, more than 100 displaced people, mostly women and children, were from Garki, Dan Aduwa and Katuma villages. They added that some had to sleep at the motor park on the day they arrived Sabon Birni. In a related development, Sultan Muhammad Saad Abubakar yesterday decried increased cases of banditry and other forms of insecurity in the country, leading to the loss of lives, and urged joint efforts to tackle the challenge. He spoke while receiving the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, at his palace in Sokoto while in the state to assess the situation in some areas recently attacked by bandits. The sultan noted the need for more funding of security agencies in the country, saying the recent killing of 74 persons in Sokoto State and many others across the nation was uncalled for. Earlier, Air Marshal Abubakar disclosed that he was in Sokoto to assess the situation and the need to boost efforts to end the security challenges in line with the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari had on Thursday ordered fierce military operation to crush terrorists in the state. Governor Aminu Tambuwal on Friday visited the president in Abuja to discuss the situation, and expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting while speaking with State House correspondents. He announced the decision of governors of the North-west states and Niger State in the North-central to jointly address the problem. Busari Faiza Taiye and Busari Hamidah Kehinde are economists by profession and politicians by vocation. They were born into the family of a prominent Islamic scholar, the late Shiek Adam Abdullah El-ilory (RTA) and the household of Hajiya Halimah and the late Alhaji Musa Busari, a quintessential journalist. They were born on April 3 in Cairo, Egypt. Popularly called Buhari twins, the young women, who hold masters’ in Peace, Conflict and Strategic Studies and are looking forward to furthering their studies to PhD level, spoke with Daily Trust Saturday. Daily Trust Saturday: Why are you called Buhari twins? Faiza and Hamidah Busari: Well, we are called the Buhari twins basically because we have been part of the struggle for as long we can remember. We have consistently advocated and voted for him. We took part in his programmes till the day he was announced as president. Besides, we are the most photographed twins with President Muhammadu Buhari in Nigeria; nobody can take that title from us. So we have been around Mr President for a while that we see him as a father. Since 2007, we have never supported or campaigned for anybody apart from President Muhammadu Buhari. The only reason we came into politics is because we share the same ideology as President Buhari. So that is why people are calling us Buhari twins. And it is a name we cherish and appreciate. With the kind of support you have been giving President Buhari, many would wonder why you are not in the Villa. Well, in the first place, the plan was not to be in the Villa, it was to get PMB into the Villa; and we thank Allah that we and other Nigerians have successfully done that. Everyone cannot be in the Villa. You are very visible politically, how did you start? Early in life, aside the leadership positions we have held in secondary school, we have not really paid keen interest in politics. As young people growing up, our family was not into politics. We come from a known line of Islamic scholars. Even as young people we have always registered and voted because we have taken interest in what is happening in our country. There was lack of accountability; and things were really taking the turn for the worse. Along the line, we listened to the speeches of President Buhari and we decided that he was the man for the job. We felt that with his integrity he could be trusted. Because we share the same ideology, we started getting endeared to him. He fitted into our lifestyle and what we believe in. We are glad that we have been part of the movement for change. As politicians, do you see your status as twins as strength or weakness? For us, being twins is a strength; we never for once saw that as weakness. Do you have moments when you both disagree on political issues? Luckily for us, we didn’t indulge much in local politics, so we have the same ideology. We always think in the same manner and perspective, so we are united in the struggle. We wanted change and nothing ever contradicted that, so we didn’t have that issue all throughout. Are you planning to run for political office soon? We don’t have plans to do that soon; we still feel it is too early. We want to be able to build a career and gather some more experience. Probably, when the time is right we will come to that decision. But right now, we want to be in the engine room, supporting politicians who have integrity and good intentions for our country. We shall continue to support anyone with good intentions of moving this country forward. How are you similar and how are you different? In so many different ways, but then, we can assure you that we are more similar than different. In totality, we are maybe 90 per cent similar and 10 per cent different. How did your parents take the news of you becoming politicians? In everything we do in life, our parents always support and pray for us. There was no issue at all. We had their blessings and prayers. But they always tell us to be true to ourselves, honest and to pray and seek Allah’s guidance in all our endeavours and try to imbibe the traits that have attracted us to President Buhari, which are integrity, honesty and the love for our beautiful country, Nigeria. If you were not into politics, what would you have been doing? We are into a lot of things, aside being politicians. We are analysts and fashion designers. We belong to a think tank group where conflict issues are addressed. We also run a non-governmental organisation where socio-economic issues surrounding twins and multiple births are addressed. I think we would have focused on that and probably explored other things aside politics. Do you hope to quit politics soon; or has the thought ever crossed your mind? Politics, to us, is not something we will quit. It is about continuously bringing change in governance in Nigeria. We will continue to support any idea that will translate into good governance in Nigeria. We are not about to stop doing that now or anywhere in the future. So quitting politics is not foreseeable.
