PoliticsCoronavirus: FG On Top Of Situation – Presidency by opportunes(op): 7:46am On Mar 20, 2020
The Presidency on Thursday assured Nigerians that the government was on top of the situation, just as Nigeria confirmed new cases of Coronavirus (COVID-19) infections in the country. Presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, in a statement today, said President Muhammadu Buhari trusts the relevant Ministers in his cabinet and the officials of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), who are providing him with constant updates and professional counsel. EDITOR’S PICK: Address Nigerians on coronavirus, Senate tells Buhari Shehu, who said these officials have a track record of competence, pleaded with Nigerians not to see this most peculiar time as one to be politicised or seen as an opportunity to regurgitate grudges against the government or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said “all Nigerians must unite to fight this plague, irrespective of religious or ideological affiliation”. “There is no cause for panic. So far, measures put in place are working efficiently. What this country is doing has been recommended as a template. “We do not want to create panic. But we will continue to update the Nigerian public with relevant information. We plead with every Nigerian to cooperate with the government in the fight against COVID-19 and obey all instructions from the NCDC. “We have a high level Presidential Coordination Committee chaired by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

This body should be allowed to carry out its duties. “Populist advocacies such as the one accusing the President of ‘complacency’ simply because he has not made a television address by ranking members of our respected parliament are cheap and sensational. These are not the times for populism and cheap politics. “President Buhari thanks all those at the forefront of the fight against the deadly disease,” he said. The statement added: “Nigeria, like every other country around the world, is dealing with the unexpected and unprecedented impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Muhammadu Buhari administration has taken some steps to mitigate the effects on the Nigerian people. “To prevent the spread of cases imported into Nigeria, the President has already ordered the restrictions of travel from 13 countries, each with more than 1,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19. “Government has also suspended visas issued to nationals of these countries. The restriction will take effect from March 21 and will remain until further notice. While Nigeria delights in welcoming the world, the safety and protection of our citizens and land must take priority.

“The various agencies of government including media owned by the government have embarked on vigorous campaigns promoting hygiene measures. “There are, currently, very stringent regimes of checks at the points of air and sea entry into the country. The effort Nigeria is making as is well known, has already received the commendation of the World Health Organisation (WHO).”

Jobs/VacanciesFG Places Embargo On Recruitment by opportunes(op): 10:33pm On Mar 18, 2020
The Federal Government has placed embargo on all recruitments into its civil service. The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this while speaking with journalists after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday.

She said the federal government would continue to pay salaries and would not sack workers but place embargo on recruitment exercises and replacement. “On recruitment, there is already an instruction to stop recruitment. What the agencies have been doing is replacement but even that is being suspended. When things improve, we will go back to the issue of recruitment. But for now, our wage bill is already very high.

“The president has directed that salaries and pensions must be paid unfailingly. So, we are not looking at downsizing in anyway. We are maintaining our workforce as it is. But we are just stopping the increase in the size of the nominal roll,” the minister said. Mrs. Ahmed also spoke on a number of measures approved by the FEC to cushion the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic on the nation’s economy. She said it included the introduction of PMS price modulation mechanism, the cutting down on the size of the federally funded upstream projects of the petroleum sector, and the reduction of the crude oil price from the $57 per barrel budgeted to $30.

The measures also included the amendment of budget projections so that the Medium Term Expenditure Framework reflects the current realities, the cutting down of expenditures, the enhancement of production at the minimum 2.18 million barrels, the adjustment of customs revenue, the review of the modalities for the implementation of the social investment programme and the non-essential tax waivers to realize more revenue.

Politics‘ganduje Wanted Sanusi Out Since 2017’ by opportunes(op): 8:19pm On Mar 15, 2020
. We Were Patient With Him – Kano Gov

In spite of interventions by President Muhammadu Buhari for an amicable settlement of the dispute between Kano State Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and the former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Muhammadu Sanusi II, the governor made up his mind to remove Sanusi since 2017, a reliable source at State House said yesterday in Abuja.

Reacting to allegations of collusion with the presidency to remove the former emir, the source said the presidency made futile efforts at many stages of the conflict to avoid an escalation. He said the President Buhari had battled to calm frayed nerves to such a level that he made it clear that if the situation warranted it, he would not hesitate to declare emergency rule in Kano. The deposed emir is believed to have first courted the anger of the governor after criticising a multi-billion naira light rail project of the state government in April 2017, describing it as a misplacement of priority.

The source who requested anonymity said when Ganduje made up his mind to remove Sanusi in 2017, he informed President Buhari of the decision but the president said it was inappropriate. “This was followed by a letter to the governor dated November 17, 2017 in which the president’s advice was clearly stated.

The president directed his Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, to follow up for a peaceful resolution of the crisis of confidence between the two,” the source said. He added that this led to the setting up a committee made up of five state governors led by Dr. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State who did their best to restore calm but occasional flare-ups continued and were aggravated by the tense situations under which the governor re-emerged for his second term in 2019. He said Governor Fayemi, Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State and the Inspector General of Police paid visits to Kano to prevail on Ganduje not to remove the emir in those tense moments in the interest of peace and security, but that Ganduje was piqued by the emir’s failure to keep off partisan politics, especially as it related to the governor’s re-election.

“In reaction to the various suggestions by senior citizens including Generals Babangida, Wushishi and Abdulsalami Abubakar, among others, the Chief of Staff sought for permission and gave the green light for the commencement of work by the Abdulsalami Abubakar committee. “The committee members sat down with the president at the Villa to discuss their mission.

At this meeting, the president outlined the efforts he put into the resolution of the conflict in Kano and said he had had enough. He gave assurances of support and put at their disposal, the use of the presidential aircraft, then wished them the best of luck. But he did make it clear that if the situation warranted it, we would not hesitate to clamp an emergency rule on the state,” he added.

According to him, Governor Ganduje gave conditions for peace, including the withdrawal of court cases by Sanusi against the state government, and Sanusi allegedly accepted to withdraw some of the cases, but stood his ground on the others, including his refusal to withdraw a court case instituted by Bashir Tofa and his group who the state government alleged to be Sanusi’s proxy.

“It was clear all this while that the inflexibility to meet some of the conditions for peace by both have added complications that made peace almost impossible,” he said, adding that the Abubakar committee report didn’t give any “glimmer of hope” for ending the crisis, and despite all these efforts among others, it would be baseless to accuse President Buhari of ordering Ganduje to depose Sanusi, considering his various peace initiatives. According to the source, the president holds Sanusi in the highest esteem and has nothing personal against him and, therefore, couldn’t have told Ganduje to depose him.

The source described as nonsensical, allegations that Buhari was complicit in the emir’s alleged forceful removal and exile to Nasarawa. Reacting, the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, said Buhari had no hand in the emir’s removal, noting that the crisis started in 2017, but the governor exhausted all avenues for reconciliation which failed. “The governor was so patient with the deposed emir. No governor in this country can tolerate the deposed emir the way Ganduje did. An emir that will not support programmers and policies of government will never be in peace with his governor.

The deposed emir is representing people, so if he has any personal grudges, he should put that aside when it comes to the issue of supporting programmes and policies that will benefit his subjects.” Sanusi in a video that circulated yesterday insisted that due process was not followed in his removal. He said if he had gone to court, he would have recovered his throne, adding that he would not do that because he has decided to move on.

PoliticsHow Planned City Ignited Crisis In Edo Community by opportunes(op): 6:20am On Mar 14, 2020
Indigenes of Oke-Aroma community, also known as Ago-Emokpae, Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, will never forget in a hurry, an attack that forced them out of their homes on the 20th of February. Although the crisis has ceased, the ruins of the attack are still very visible in the community, as burnt houses and vehicles are seen everywhere. The attack, allegedly carried out by the people of Amagba community in Oredo Local Government Area of the state over land dispute, also led to the destruction of domestic animals andý farm produce It was gathered that the relationship between Amagba and Oke-Aroma had been frosty for over one year due to the claim of autonomy by the former.

It was also learnt that the recent crisis was ignited by the state government’s decision to create a new city in the area. It was also gathered that both traditional and legal means had been deployed to resolve the animosity between both communities, who are laying claim to the land, a situation that led to the recent destruction of lives. During the attack, shops were also said to be vandalised. Immediately after the attack, the people of Oke-Oroma community protested to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) secretariat, Edo State Council, calling on Governor Godwin Obaseki and the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, to intervene in the matter. A member of the community, Mr. Nicholas Aguebor, who spoke for the protesters, alleged that the people of Amagba community invaded their community (Oke-Oroma) and destroyed their houses and other properties.

He said the case over land dispute was still pending at the palace of the Oba of Benin when they were attacked. “Our great grandfathers lived in this community for many years and we did not have any issue with neigbouring communities. We are surprised at the sudden invasion by Amagba and neighbouring communities,’’ Aguebor said. A resident of Oke-Aroma, Abel Emokpae, claimed that his grandfather founded the community; hence the land belongs to them and not Amagba. He said they heard the rumour of the attack three weeks before it was carried out, adding “My brother, Gaius, who is to be installed as Odionwere, wrote letters intimating security agencies of the impending attack, but they failed to take any action.

“How can you live in an area for over 200 years and somebody is telling you the land belongs to them? According to him, after burning their houses, the attackers accused them of carrying out the action. “How can a normal human being burn down his own house? They came to destroy our village. It is Amagba people that are fighting us. “In 2012, Oba Erediauwa set up a panel and Chief Eduwu Ekhator reported that River Oroma was the boundary. If we want to install Odionwere, it is not Amagba that would approve it; it is the Oba. “An Enogie has many villages under him. We are one of the villages under the Enogie of Obagie N’Evbuosa dukedom, based on the ruling of Oba Erediauwa. The river is separating us.

It is a perpetual boundary,’’ Emokpae said. On the planned new city, he said, “We expect Obaseki to talk to Oke-Aroma people and not other groups. We are expecting him to do the needful and not pay our compensation to the wrong people. “The way forward is to recognise us as the rightful owners of that place. We were in the village and had to run into the bush when the attackers came.’’ Also speaking, the general secretary of Oke-Oroma community, Monday Eghaghe, said they were coming home from the police station where they went to report a case when they got wind of the attack.

“We were there with our brother, Pa Osaro Uwaifo, the community chairman and Abel when they told us they were already in our community shooting everywhere, without a just cause. “Obazagbon and Amagba jointly attacked and destroyed our community, but I know the government and our Oba will not leave us alone. Our families ran away because we still envisage that they would come back. All we want is justice and peace. We are calling on government to come to our aid,’’ he said. He said it is a river called Orama that separates the community.

“The river serves as a natural boundary between us and Amagba, as well as Obazagbon. After using the land, the people of Agbama want to cross from Oredo to Ikpoba-Okha to exploit us. This matter is in court and Oba’s palace. Also, a member of the community who only gave his name as Osaron, said many inhabitants of the community had taken refuge in the houses of their relatives in other communities.

Coronavirus: Trouble Looms In Nigeria As 50 Oil Cargoes Stranded

• Lufthansa cancels 23,000 flights

• We’re not taking things lightly-CBN

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) yesterday raised the alarm about the looming crisis as a result of low oil prices and asked Nigerians to brace up for tougher times ahead.

The warning came as the coronavirus scourge continues to wreak serious havoc in the global economic landscape, especially by creating fiscal and planning distortions in crude oil and gas-exporting economies. The Group Managing Director of the state-owned oil corporation, Mallam Mele Kyari, who gave this hint yesterday at the Roundtable Parley with the CBN Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele with the theme “Going for Growth 2.0” in Abuja, specifically advised millions of Nigerians to “prepare for trouble” as oil prices take further plunge while demands continue to ebb by the day.

Kyari’s alarm could not have come at a more auspicious time in the 2020 fiscal year in view of the foreign exchange earning implications of the coronavirus scourge for the country’s budget implementation and expected outcomes for the citizenry. Kyari said, “The potential of coming out of the coronavirus will be a long while to come, at least three months.

So, prepare for trouble for three months…We have a backlog of production that needs to be resolved. We will have the impact of coronavirus for a while. Kyari said, “Today, I can share with you that there are over 12 stranded LNG cargoes in the market globally. It has never happened before. LNG cargoes that are stranded with no hope of being purchased because there is an abrupt collapse in demand associated with the outbreak of coronavirus. “Today, we have about 50 oil cargoes that have not found landing.

It means that the traders have purchased it but they don’t know where to take it to.” The NNPC GMD said in order to remain afloat amidst the ravaging effects of the coronavirus, some oil producing countries like Saudi Arabia had given a discount of $8 on the price of its crude oil. “Iraq gives $5 to their off-takers in some locations,” he said. He said when crude oil is sold at $30 per barrel, countries like Saudi Arabia gives it at $22 per barrel and Iraq sells it at $25 per barrel.

Kyari, however, said the NNPC was not resting on its oars, saying several measures were being taken to alleviate the cost of crude oil production in Nigeria. He said the cost of crude oil production in Nigeria is within the range of $15 to $17 per barrel, adding that a reduced cost of production would create a market for Nigeria’s crude and make the country a choice destination for foreign direct investment.

CrimeBandits Killed, Maimed In 5 Kaduna Villages For 4 Hours by opportunes(op): 8:09am On Mar 07, 2020
They came on motorcycles, in the quiet breeze of the early morning when many had left the comfort of their beds to congregate for the Subhi (early morning) prayer. It was 5:30am and the sounds of the assailants’ gunshots created panic; there was confusion and many ran in opposite directions, not certain where the bandits were coming from.

They had targeted and descended first, on Marina village in Kerawa district of Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State. Without mercy, they shot at men, women, children and the elderly. “Those of us who used local charm and were impervious to their bullets paid a different price,” said a member of the vigilante group who escaped the attack. “They ran over some of our men with their motorcycles. Because their bullets failed, their machetes were used to cut, slice and hack our people down and others were set ablaze,” he narrated.

After almost four hours of massacre that extended to four additional villages, our correspondents learnt that the bandits had only retreated when air and ground reinforcements from security agencies began their onslaught on them. By noon, the dozens of bandits that ambushed the five neighbouring communities of Igabi and Giwa local government areas of the state had left a trail of bloodbath, ashes of the people they burnt and empty shells of vehicles and homes they ransacked and set ablaze.

Marina village recorded 13 casualties, Kerewa village recorded 23 while 15 others were from Zariyawa, Rago and Unguwan Musa. Ibrahim Aliyu, a member of the vigilante at Marina village said the bandits had hit Marina first and on noticing the smoke emanating from the village, youths from neighbouring Kerawa had rushed to render assistance but were equally ambushed by the bandits.

“They burnt six vehicles in Marina village, cars and motorcycles were burnt in Kerawa as well as hundreds of bags of grains were set ablaze. They looted our communities and took away some of the motorcycles,” he said. In remote communities where vehicular accessibility is difficult and GSM network, almost impossible, it took hours for help to reach the people of the affected villages. However, Governor Nasiru El-Rufai had said the casualty figures would have been far more devastating if not for the intervention of security agents. As at the last count, the ward Councillor of Kerawa, Dayyabu Kerawa, said 51 people had been killed, about 5000 bags of grains destroyed.

He appealed to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to assist the people who are now taking refuge at Karaukarau and Iyatawa villages of Giwa LGA. Daily Trust Saturday gathered that about three victims are currently receiving treatment at Kauran Wali clinic and one other at ABU Teaching hospital, Shika in Zaria Local Government Area while eight others are at the Iyatawa Hospital in Giwa LGA.

PoliticsBuhari Mum As Oshiomhole Says Govs, Minister Behind Ouster Plot by opportunes(op): 8:39am On Mar 06, 2020
• APC chair not suspended, Court rules

President Muhammadu Buhari has kept mum on the renewed plot to remove the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The intrigues to remove Oshiomhole, who emerged as the national chairman of the party in June 2018, thickened on Wednesday when an Abuja high court presided over by Justice Danlami Senchi ordered the party to stop recognising him pending the determination of a substantive suit seeking his perpetual removal.

Since the court order, Daily Trust gathered that those pushing for Oshiomhole’s removal have intensified efforts to perfect their plot even as those in his camp were leaving no stone unturned to foil the bid. As the controversy rages on, Daily Trust reports that the presidency has however kept mum on the matter. Meanwhile, immediately after a Federal High Court sitting in Kano granted Oshiomhole’s prayers against the Abuja ruling, he rushed to the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where he met with President Buhari.

Our correspondent reports that at the end of the meeting, no statement was issued by presidential spokespersons. When contacted, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, did not reply to a text message sent by our correspondent on the matter.

But while speaking after the meeting with reporters Oshiomhole said a minister and some governors were plotting to remove him as the party’s national chairman. He did not disclose their names. “Let me say that those behind this plot, the hands you saw which includes as you saw yesterday (Wednesday), the Edo State governor and his people jubilating but that is the irony of life that you will help give birth to a child and the child look for cutlass to want to chop off your neck. It has happened in history, it has happened in this country so I won’t be the only person.

“But there are other forces that see me for whatever reason as a threat to them. And those leading this anti-Oshiomhole campaign, some of them I emphasise, cannot even boost of a councillor in their state even as they lay claim to leadership position in our party,” he said. Oshiomhole also said some of those plotting to get rid of him are doing so because they wanted to be president in 2023.

PoliticsBauchi: Court Remands Trader For Defaming Sharia Court Judge On Facebook by opportunes(op): 9:47pm On Mar 05, 2020
The Chief Magistrate Court II in Bauchi on Thursday remanded a 27-year-old trader, Gaddafi Abdulmumin, in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) for defaming a Sharia Court judge on his Facebook page. The prosecution counsel, Inspector Yusuf Usman, told the court that the accused had defamed the character of the Sharia Court judge of Liman Katugum, Muhammed Sunusi Babaji, by posting several abusive and insulting words on his Facebook page with the intent to tarnish the judge’s image.

Usman told the court that the plaintiff had in a petition addressed to the state Commissioner of Police dated 26 February 2020 narrated the genesis of the case when the accused person, Gaddafi Abdulmumin, sued one lady Jessica Basil in his court with suit number CV/30/09/2019 dated 19 September, 2019. “I heard the case on the 21 October, 2019 which was slated at that day for mention. The case ended by consent judgement due to the fact that the parties agreed to settle out of court which is permitted by the law.

“The parties, after settling their case out of court, applied to the court to consider and accept their settlement as the final judgement of the court, ‘Consent Judgement,’ which is also known by the law. The court looking at and considering the terms and conditions of the settlement granted the application.

“Thereafter, the plaintiff in the said case, Gaddafi Abdulmumin, later posted and reproduced mechanically several abusive and insulting words on his Facebook page against me, intending to harm me, knowing that the insult and imputation will harm my personality and reputation as the honourable judge of Liman Katugum Sharia Court which amounts to cyber crime and defamation of my character globally,” the petition read.

The prosecutor said that the accused has admitted to the charges in his written statement, which is an offence contrary and punishable under section 24 (1) (a) and (b) of Cyber Crime Prohibition and Prevention Act 2015 and section 391 and 392 of the Penal Code law. In her rulling, Magistrate Safiya Doma adjourned the case to 30 March, 2020, as the court awaits legal advice from the state’s Ministry of Justice. She therefore ordered the accused to be remanded in the custody of the Correctional Service in the state.

HealthDrug Scarcity Looms In Nigeria As India Suspends Export by opportunes(op): 6:28am On Mar 05, 2020
Nigeria may experience drug shortage as India has suspended the exportation of drugs to the country and others around the world. A fortnight ago, the Director-General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, Mojisola Adeyeye, had said Nigeria risks drug shortage as 70 percent of its drugs were imported from other countries.

She had said India was already feeling the drug insecurity because it bought most of its materials and active ingredients from China. “If India is feeling it, we should start praying, because we don’t manufacture anything here except water; we import almost everything – active and non-active ingredients, equipment etc. So it is a scary thing, and I have been emphasizing this from day one. We need drug security. Since we import 70 percent of our drugs, then, we are in trouble if such things happen”, she had said.

The government of India, the world’s biggest supplier of generic drugs, in a circular yesterday by the Director General, Directorate General of Foreign Trade, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Amit Yadav, limited the exportation of essential drugs and active pharmaceutical ingredients because of the coronavirus disease outbreak.

The ban is to ensure home supply as experts warn that the country may face drug shortage if the COVID-19 outbreak continues. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation has reportedly warned that banknotes could aid the transmission of the infectious disease, advising people to go cashless in transactions.

A WHO spokesman was quoted thus: “To stop the spread of the disease, people should use contactless payments where possible and wash their hands after handling cash. “We know that money changes hands frequently and can pick up all sorts of bacteria and viruses.”

PoliticsEdo Police Arrest Inspector For Allegedly Killing Civilian by opportunes(op): 10:36pm On Mar 04, 2020
The Police Command in Edo state on Wednesday said it has arrested a police inspector, who allegedly shot a civilian, Richard Odia to death in Benin in February. This Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor, disclosed this in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.

Nwabuzor said the state Commissioner of Police, Lawan Jimeta, had directed an immediate orderly room trial (a mechanism for disciplinary action against personnel who erred in service) of the inspector. He explained that police inspector was serving in Delta Command where he was attached to the Department of Operations and was on special duty to 301 Construction Company, Asaba.

The command’s spokesman said the policeman was on escort duty from Asaba to Benin when he shot and killed the deceased. He also said that the incident happened on Feb. 11 at about 7:00 p.m.

According to Nwabuzor, the police personnel, shot and seriously wounded the deceased with an AK-47 rifle at a road construction site at Asagba boundary on Benin-Auchi expressway, after a misunderstanding. “The deceased was immediately rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), where he unfortunately died on Feb. 12. “The Commissioner of Police, Lawan Jimeta, hereby condoles with the family and friends of late Richard Odia on his untimely death and assures them that justice will prevail in this case.

“He has also appealed to them to remain calm and law-abiding as the command under his leadership, holds high premium on human lives. “He has however, invited anyone who witnessed the incident to come and give evidence during the trial because without witnesses, the aim of conducting the orderly room trial will be defeated,” he stated. PoliticsMy Victory Is For Imo People – Uzodinma by opportunes(op): 7:26pm On Mar 04, 2020
Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo state has dedicated his victory to God, saying “it’s for the people of Imo.” The Supreme Court had on Tuesday dismissed the application of former Governor Emeka Ihedioha, where he asked the court to reverse its January 14 judgement, which sacked him as the governor of the state. The court had held that it lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case as its January 14 judgement is final and irreversible. Speaking in Owerri on Wednesday, the governor asked all the people of the state to rally round him for the progress of the state.

Uzodinma extended his hands of fellowship to every Imolite, saying the state is for everybody. “I’m the governor of all Imo people and I want us to put away our political differences for the sake of the state. I am inviting supporters of other parties to see Imo as their own and Hope Uzodinma as their governor. In this way, we will move the state forward.”

HealthIraq Announces First Coronavirus Death by opportunes(op): 1:54pm On Mar 04, 2020
Iraq said a 70-year-old Muslim cleric died on Wednesday from the novel coronavirus, the first death from the outbreak in a country where 31 people have been infected. The Iraqi preacher had been quarantined in the northeastern city of Sulaimaniyah before his death, a spokesman for the Kurdish autonomous region’s health authority said.

According to local sources, he had recently met with Iraqis returning from neighbouring Iran, which has recorded the third deadliest outbreak outside China, the epidemic’s epicentre. Across the world, 3,155 people have died from the virus, with China recording 2,943 deaths, Italy 79 while 77 people have died in Iran from the disease.

Iraq is one of Iran’s largest export markets and a popular destination for Iranian pilgrims visiting the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. Many Iraqis also cross the frontier for business, tourism, medical treatment and religious studies. Iraqi authorities have closed land borders with Iran and banned the entry of foreign nationals travelling from there and other badly affected countries. Schools, universities, cinemas, cafes and other public places in Iraq have been ordered shut until March 7 to further contain the outbreak, but many continue to operate normally.

Responding to Wednesday’s death, Sulaimaniyah Governor Haval Abu Bakr told reporters that all rallies in the province will be banned and that all football matches will now be held behind closed doors. Local religious authorities for their part announced a ban on mass prayers, including on Fridays, until further notice. The outbreak has fuelled public panic among Iraqis who say the war-ravaged country’s healthcare system cannot handle the epidemic.

PoliticsWe’re Exploring Int’l Collaboration To Defeat B/haram – Buhari by opportunes(op): 8:03am On Feb 27, 2020
President Muhammadu Buhari says his government is exploring higher level of collaboration among nations and international organisations to defeat the Boko Haram insurgency and terrorism. Buhari said this at the National Defence College in Abuja yesterday during the national security seminar organized by the Alumni Association of the National Defence College, in collaboration with the Office of National Security Adviser. The theme of the seminar was“ Combating Insecurity in Nigeria”. Buhari, represented by the Minister of Defence Major-General Bashir Magashi (rtd), said security forces had over the years worked hard to defeat insurgence and would re-examine their strategies to deal with the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP).

He said: “looking back over the period since assumption of office, it’s worthy of note that there have been positive and significant improvements in all sectors of our national life. However, new threats in the areas of insurgency and terrorism have emerged due mainly to the defeat of the Islamic State in Syria (ISIS) whose fighters have relocated to other countries and regions. “This is a major concern to us, as their presence in the West Africa Sahel region poses great danger not only to Nigeria, but the entire region. Thus, we’re exploring higher level of collaboration among all nations and international organisations to effectively curtail the spread of terrorism and defeat insurgency and terrorism”.

Buhari warned kidnappers and other criminal elements using kidnapping and other criminals to either stop or face the full weight of the law as security agencies had a renewed mandate to deal with such acts of criminality.
