Senate Questions Security Funds’ Spending Senate President Ahmad Lawan yesterday declared that the Senate must know how the security agencies utilise funds received. Lawan declared this at senate plenary session while speaking on cases of insecurity along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway. He said: “We need to be radical. We need to give them more funds. It is not enough to give them money, we must see how they utilise the money. We need to go back to the report on the ad-hoc committee on security infrastructure. We could go by way of public hearing to review security infrastructure. The way they are, we are not getting the best out of them.” Lawan said the Senate would also insist that security operatives travel by the road rather than join “ordinary” Nigerians in the train because of kidnappers. He said: “We will also insist that uniform people must not join the train because they are the ones supposed to protect us on the highways,” he said. “The military, police and all these paramilitary agencies should allow ordinary people to use the train. Let them ply the roads because they will clear the road for other road users to go on the road.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/senate-questions-security-funds-spending.html |
The Department of State Services, DSS, on Wednesday alleged that Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, the 20-year-old son of former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, PRTT, Abdulrasheed Maina, pulled a pistol against the security agents involved in the operation to arrest his father. A statement from DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya added that Faisal was disarmed and arrested alongside his father. He said “the lad even pulled a pistol against the security agents involved in the operation.” “He was, however, disarmed and arrested. He is a final year student at the Canadian University of Dubai where he is studying Telecoms Engineering,” he added. He added that the arrest which was effected at the Pennsylvania Avenue Hotel, Utako, Abuja followed a request by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to the Service to assist in apprehending the suspect. He said the items recovered from the suspects include a pistol with live ammunition, a bullet proof Range Rover SUV, a BMW Saloon car, foreign currencies, a phantom 7 drone and sensitive documents. He said the suspects and the recovered items will be handed over to the EFCC for further investigations and appropriate necessary actions. Afunanya said it is instructive to note that the operation is as a result of a renewed inter-agency collaboration among security and law enforcement agencies. He said the Service has always subscribed to such collaboration believed to be important in national security management and therefore, hopes to sustain the initiative in mitigating the current threats against public safety and national critical assets. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/how-mainas-20-yr-old-son-pulled-a-pistol-against-dss-efcc-agents.html

Tottenham Hotspur coach, Mauricio Pochettino’s message was to ‘stay calm’ after Bayern Munich racked up a clinical 7-2 win in the Champions League on Tuesday night. “We started well, created chances and took a deserved lead on 12 minutes through Heung-Min Son. However, Joshua Kimmich levelled soon after and the visitors forged ahead via Robert Lewandowski just before half-time. “2-1 became 4-1 within 10 minutes of the second half as Serge Gnabry struck twice in three minutes. Harry Kane gave us hope from the penalty spot for 4-2 just after the hour and it stayed that way until three goals in the final seven minutes – Gnabry hitting his third and fourth, Lewandowski his second. Every strike clinical, Pochettino lamented. “To stay calm is most important, to stay together,” said Pochettino. “The right assessment is so important, not to take rash decisions and make a rash assessment. It’s so important to stay calm.” He argued that his team actually started well, stressing that after 30 minutes, no-one expected the final scoreline to be so embarrassing. Pochettino added that Bayern were very clinical in front of goal, maintaining that every time they arrived, they scored. “The feeling is so bad, but we need to stay all together, to be strong all together and move on. We damaged our pride but now we need to stay together and from tomorrow, to think and move on. “It’s difficult to say something for our fans. We feel embarrassed for the result, but what I can say is that we feel as bad as they feel, very disappointed and we need to bounce back all together again. “To stay together is most important.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/stay-calm-pochettino-tells-players-after-7-2-champions-league-defeat.html

President Muhammadu will not make any attempt to seek an “unconstitutional” third term in office, his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said. Shehu, in a statement yesterday, said Buhari would leave office in 2023. He stated:“The Presidency wishes to correct internet-based gossip and un-informed media commentary regarding presidential term limits, given credence by so-called support groups, staging street demonstrations asking President Buhari to do a third term. “There are no circumstances – nor set of circumstances – under which President Buhari may seek to amend the Constitution regarding the two-term term limit on holding office as President. “President Buhari intends to serve his full second elected term in office, ending 2023 – and then there shall be a general election in which he will not be a candidate. “There is not even the faintest possibility that this will change. “It is important to note that there was a past attempt to change the constitution to allow for the-then incumbent president to stand for a third term. That attempt was wrong, unconstitutional – and rightly rebuffed. No such attempt will happen under this President. “President Buhari is a democrat. He respects the constitution. Any activity aimed at altering the two-term limit will not succeed and shall never have his time nor support.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/i-wont-seek-third-term-buhari.html |

The Federal Government is set to resume the payment of pensioners in Northwest Nigeria after verification of the 13,000 persons on its roll, Executive Secretary of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate, PTAD, Dr. Chioma Ejikeme has said. Dr. Ejikeme, who was in Kaduna to inspect the verification exercise, said the exercise was going on smoothly and over 8,000 retired federal workers out of the 13,000 slated for verification had so far been screened. She said the Parastatal Pensioner Verification Exercise was for pensioners and next of kin under the Defined Benefit Scheme and covered states in the Northwest zone of the country. “The whole idea (verification exercise) is to compute what we are owing the pensioners; what we have been able to pay them and what they are suppose to get in terms of computation,” she said. Dr. Ejikeme disclosed that pension liability under the category stands at over N10bn. She said PTAD was committed to ensuring that pensioners were treated with respect and dignity that they deserved, having served their father’s land meritoriously. The biometric verification exercise, according to her, covers retirees of federal universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, teaching hospitals, medical centers, Power Holding Company of Nigeria, Nigeria Railway Corporation, Nigerian Postal Services, research institutes, other treasury of all federally- funded parastatals, agencies and institutes. It also covered retirees of the defunct/privatized agencies who had yet to be verified such as Aluminum Smelter Company of Nigeria, Nigeria Aviation Handling, Assurance Bank, and the Nigerian National Shipping Line.
