PoliticsTribunal: Ganduje, Abba, Tambuwal, Aliyu Know Fate Tomorrow by opportunes(op): 7:26am On Oct 01, 2019
The governorship election petition tribunals have fixed tomorrow, Wednesday, for the delivery of judgements on the Kano and Sokoto states governorship tussles, Daily Trust reports. In Kano, the tribunal has slated tomorrow for judgment in a petition filed by the PDP and its governorship candidate, Abba Kabir Yusuf, challenging the victory of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

Counsel to APC, Barr. Christopher Oshomegia and that of PDP, Barr. Bashir Yusuf, as well as that of Governor Ganduje, Barr. M. A. Lawan, have confirmed to Daily Trust that the date was communicated to the parties on Monday by the tribunal. The three-man tribunal, led by Justice Halima S. Muhammad, had on September 18, 2019 reserved judgment, saying it would communicate the date for the delivery of judgement to the parties involved. Dissatisfied with the declaration of Ganduje as the winner of the March 23 governorship election in Kano, the PDP and Abba filed a petition at the tribunal. PDP and its governorship candidate were dissatisfied with the outcome of the election, saying it was marred by violence and that, their members were prevented from casting their votes, an allegation both INEC and APC said was baseless. The petitioners requested the tribunal to cancel the March 23 election and revert to the March 9 election which was declared inconclusive by INEC.

They claimed that their candidate won the March 9 election, hence he should be declared winner. On its part, INEC the 1st respondent, had called three witnesses; Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the 2nd respondent presented four witnesses; while APC, the 3rd respondent called only one witness, arguing that the petitioners did not present any case that would warrant calling more witnesses. Similarly, the 2019 Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Sokoto has fixed tomorrow, October 2 for its judgement.

Daily Trust reliably gathered that the judgement would be delivered in Abuja. No reason was given on why the judgement would be delivered in Abuja, but it was generally believed that it was due to security threat. One of the lawyers of the petitioners, Barr. Bashir Jodi confirmed to Daily Trust that the judgement would be delivered tomorrow. Reacting, the Publicity Secretary of the ruling PDP, Abdullahi Hausawa expressed optimism that the judgement would be delivered in their favour.

“We are confident that by God’s Grace, the judgement will be in our favour,” he said Hausawa said they were told that the judgement would be delivered in Abuja because of security threat. The chairman of APC in the state, Isa Sadiq Achida, said the judges have their own reason for taking the judgement to Abuja. “Our hope is that they will be just and fair in their judgement,” he said. He called on their supporters and the entire people of Sokoto State to remain law abiding, before and after the judgement.

“We are ready to accept the outcome of the tribunal in good faith and I hope, members of the PDP will do the same because Sokoto is our home, we should not resort to anything that will put our people and state in danger after the judgement,” he said. Ahmed Aliyu, governorship candidate of APC, and the party, had on April 11, 2019, dragged INEC, Tambuwal and PDP before the tribunal, sitting in Sokoto, challenging the declaration of Tambuwal as winner of the poll.

PoliticsNigeria’s Devt Is Disappointing — Kwande by opportunes(op): 5:57am On Oct 01, 2019
Former Ambassador of Nigeria to Switzerland, Yahaya Kwande, has described Nigeria’s level of development since independence as disappointing. Kwande, who spoke to Daily Trust from Cairo- Egypt, said it appears Nigeria keeps moving forward and backwards at the same time. “I remember in the 70’s/80’s, standing in Spain airport when I saw our aircraft; the Nigerian Airways landing beautifully with everyone admiring it. That was the pride of Africa then, but today, we don’t even have any national airline, this is a disappointment,” he said.

Kwande said apart from the air car “When we used to travel to England and they would say this is a Nigerian, you would find people of other African neighbouring states admiring us but now, the pride is gone because the whole world seems to be talking about Nigeria in the negative.”

The former ambassador blamed the country’s woes, largely on political leaders who he described as greedy with poor judgement for the country’s vast talents adding that, “we have forgotten our past and we are confused today not knowing what will happen in the future due to the insecurity in the country.”
“Yes, Nigeria needs strong institutions,” he said, adding that; “but the country also needs strong and courageous leaders because it is the leaders that make the institutions. However, the problem is that people go into government not wanting to push the ordinary man from the poverty level; they go there to make themselves rich.

That is why Nigerian citizens must rethink and start to vote for people with courage that will move this country forward.” Kwande added that it was a poor excuse to say Nigeria was only a few decades old. “When did Dubai get to where it is today, competing with America and other western civilisations? What happened that within just 20 years, Dubai went far? we must learn from the successes and mistakes of other people and countries,” he said.

PoliticsIndependence: God Has Taken Away Our Enemies’ Powers — Osinbajo by opportunes(op): 8:40am On Sep 30, 2019
…Nigeria at threshold of breakthrough — Gowon

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo says a new Nigeria is here and that God has taken away the powers of the enemies of the country.

Speaking yesterday at the Independence Day Interdenominational Service held at the National Christian Centre ahead of the nation’s 59th independence anniversary, Osinbajo said Nigeria would soon overcome its numerous challenges as the solution to the challenges to ensure Nigeria’s day of freedom “is at the door”. He said: “God Almighty has taken away the protection of the enemies of this nation. He has taken away their powers, the noise we hear, the turbulence we experience, are the last gasps of a defeated foe. The day of freedom is at the door. As with Abraham, we in the words of Hebrews 11:10 wait for the new Nigeria, which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.”

He said God had promised, through the mouths of His trusted prophets, that “He is giving us New Nigeria! May I announce to you today that God is ready to take us into the Promised Land, the new Nigeria. And we must remember that God, the Almighty God is the builder of nations, that God controls the destinies of nations and its people. “God has promised us a new Nigeria, a peaceful Nigeria, a prosperous Nigeria, a Nigeria where justice and equity shall prevail, a united Nigeria, where the different tribes and tongues are not wedges of separation, but the joyful textures of our togetherness. God is ready to fulfil His promise.

“We stand outside the new city, the Promised Land, the new Nigeria; like the spies sent by Moses to spy out the Promised Land, some are saying, “Ha! It is impossible, Nigeria cannot change, the ethnic and religious divisions are too deep, corruption cannot end, politicians are too selfish and mischievous.

“Yet, like Caleb and Joshua, we declare that these problems are merely bread for us, we will enter the Promised Land! The new Nigeria is here, and each and every one of us, our families, our friends, all of us, will eat the pleasant fruits of this land. Earlier, a former Head of States, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), charged the nations’ security agencies to end insecurity by the next independence celebration and ensure “there is no disorder in this country.” He expressed Nigeria shall fulfil her destiny, asking people not to be discouraged as the nation is at the threshold of a breakthrough and the dawn of history. “Nigeria shall recover and rise again.”

“In the midst of the various inflicted challenges in Nigeria today, we can come together in the unity of faith to salvage the nation from its woes. I believe Nigeria is specially favoured by God and I am confident that God who preserved it in the past will do it again if only we can continue to fervently pray and do what is right and good before Him and fellowmen and women.

“Prayer still remains the key to salvage our personal family and national challenges but we must appreciate those who are committed to ensure law and order, peace and stability in our nation and ask them to resolve to do more to ensure peace and stability of Nigeria,” Gowon said.

PoliticsWho Is Really In Charge Of Regulating Ngos? by opportunes(op): 5:37am On Sep 29, 2019
Recently, The Nigerian Army shut down the offices of a humanitarian aid group Action against Hunger (ACF) in the northeast, accusing it of “aiding and abetting terrorists.” A few days after, they shut down the Maiduguri office of another international humanitarian agency, Mercy Corps. The Companies and Allied Matters Act, and by extension the Corporate Affairs Commission established under it, play regulatory role over NGOs. Also, the criminal code (or penal code in the North) in cases of fraud, etc. oversees NGOs too and the National Planning Commission is also charged with overseeing the operations of NGOs in the country.

So it is expected that one of these bodies should be in charge of the sort of accusations being made by the military and closing down any NGO found at fault. The fact that the military can just decide to close down any NGO without due process shows the deteriorating condition of the rule of law in the country. This is not the military era. There are laws and rules in place for situations like this and bodies to ensure the carriage of justice. So the Military should take a step back from handing these types of issues.

The Police in Benue State on Friday paraded suspected serial killers, who allegedly operated the mass graves in Gbatse community of Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State. Daily Trust reports that the graves were discovered in the premises of the alleged gang leader, Iorwuese Kpila, few days ago after he was arrested by the police and made confessional statements.

The State Commissioner of Police, Mukaddas Garba, who paraded the ring leader of the killer squad before newsmen at the police headquarters in Makurdi, disclosed that, the suspects are kidnappers, serial killers and armed robbers. “Intelligence was gathered that a kidnap/robbery gang operates within Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State. Upon receipt of this information, a crack squad was deployed to the area for investigation. “On 21/09/2019 at about 4:30pm, the gang leader, one Iorwuese Ikpia and five other suspects all male of Mbagwaza council ward, Ushongo were arrested in connection with the case. “During interrogation, the suspects confessed that they have been armed robbers operating within zone Ukum, Kwande, Kastina-Ala and Ushongo LGAs who opted for kidnapping as a result of tight deployment of security operatives on the high ways,” he said. Garba added that the suspects specified that the gang kidnapped 16 persons, robbed them of their vehicles, motorcycles and other belongings, killed their victims, buried the corpses and planted cassava on the graves as a way of covering the crime.

He said that further investigation led to the discovery of 16 shallow graves of which 11 corpses had been exhumed and identified by their family members, disclosing that a receiver of the properties stolen by the gang; one Shizoon Nyityo of Zaki-Biam had also been arrested. The police commissioner listed items recovered from the suspects to include, one locally made single barrel gun, a rope used by the gang members to strangulate their victims and assorted charms. Speaking with journalists, Kpila, popularly known as “Doctor,” admitted that his gang killed 16 people within the space of three months.

The 30-year-old also confessed that the killings were means to acquire powers from a spirit being referred to as queen mother and that he was to kill more four people to bring the numbers of victims to 20 which was the target set by the spirit mother.

PoliticsOnly 62 Women Elected In 2019 — INEC by opportunes(op): 5:22am On Sep 27, 2019
Only 62 women won elective positions in the 2019 general elections, Deputy Director and Head of Gender Division, Independent National and Electoral Commission, Blessing Obidegwu, diclosed. She disclosed this in Abuja yesterday at a 2-day workshop supported by the European Centre for Electoral Support, ECES, meant to review the 2019 general elections from a gender perspective. She said that at all levels of governance, representation of women in Nigeria fell short of the gender policy benchmark of 35 percent. The representative of ECES, Senior Project Manager, Sylvestre Somo, noted that effective and proportionate participation of women in the electoral process constitutes a cardinal principle of “a virile and inclusive democracy”.

PoliticsCoalition Says Plans Underway To Remove Emir Sanusi by opportunes(op): 6:05pm On Sep 26, 2019
A Kano group, ‘The Renaissance Coalition’ has alleged that plans are underway by the Kano state Government to transfer the Emir of Kano Mallam Muhammadu Sanusi II to Bichi emirate. Meanwhile the Kano state government has declined to react to the allegation.

A statement from the coalition, signed by its spokesperson, Ibrahim A. Waiya, alleged that if emir Sanusi resists, he would be deposed. The statement reads: “This is quite unfortunate that, despite a subsisting court ruling which has ordered the maintenance of status quo pending conclusion of the matter before it, and even the contentious law which was maliciously and hurriedly made, and is being challenged before the court, has not explicitly provided for such swap.

“This is indeed a very dangerous move that is likely to cause violent unrest in the polity, and the alleged plot also shows extreme desperation on the part of the governor to advance a personal vendetta at the expense of the peace and well-being of the citizens he swore to protect.

“We deem it our responsibility to do everything possible within our power to advocate for the peace and well-being of the citizens, by calling on all well meaning individuals and the Federal Government, to call the governor to order, to seize and desist from any further hostile action against the Kano emirate and emir Sanusi ll,” the statement indicated.

The statement called on relevant authorities to take appropriate and timely action to prevent societal disasters. It added that “We decided not to wait and be reactive but to be proactive because of the perceived heavy toll the repercussions of the alleged action of the Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, awaits the people of Kano, if the alleged plot is materialized and remains unchecked.”

“We strongly call on the governor to desist from going on with this alleged plot and such similar action, which is capable of jeopardizing the relative peace we enjoy in the State. We also particularly call on the security agencies, political leaders, the respected elders, venerated Ulamas, intellectuals, opinion leaders and any person or people with the means to reach out to the Governor to desist from such act.

“It is our prayer that, the Federal Government, must to do everything possible to prevail on the Governor to forestall the alleged plot of Swapping the Emir of Kano Mallam Muhammad Sanusi, to ensure that our dear State remains peaceful.”
