Nice structure! But if I may ask will pigs not eat up the wood? |
Time and season for everything under the sun. A time to be born A time to die But what will you be remembered for? How many lives were you able to impact? Positively or Negatively? RIP to the deceased |
“Adedeji just came back to Nigeria from Los Angeles where he had lived and worked for 20years as a cleaner and menial labourer. His friends Tayo and Jelili were so happy to receive their childhood friend who at 45 is yet to be married and have kids. His last twenty years has been full of struggles, denials and self sacrifice. He told his friends; ‘ you guys don’t know what God has done for you. Look at you people, you have your own houses, wives, children and everyone in the community can easily identify with you. Unlike me, many people do not recognize me, some even called me baba London. No wife, no children, no house and no one would employ me at my age, except I start a business. I have lost so much to my 20 years odyssey. I have lost my early life to hustling.’ Adedeji travelled to the United States at age 25 in search of greener pasture. His two friends, also 44 and 46, were professional accountant and lawyer respectively. Deji sold his house in LA and relocated to Nigeria for fear of old age, royal inheritance (being a prince), family and his love for his people. Although, he has lost all his early life to ‘struggling abroad’, he still came back with 85million naira, his life’s savings. Deji believed he could build a house, start a business, marry a woman and start life all over with this money. Adedeji called his friends and explained to them his plan to start a new life in Nigeria. He also declared he had 40million naira cash with him. His friends confirmed, ‘with the huge amount, you won’t have any problem starting all over.’ A week after, they took him to a property at the GRA in their town, the property goes for 25million naira according to Jelili who has been bargaining with the seller. Seeing the property, Adedeji loved it and paid immediately. It was on their way home that he met with Tomi. Tomi is a Nurse at the State’s Teaching Hospital. She’s tall, beautiful, curvy and jovial. They started talking and the rest is history. As times goes by, Adedeji realized he is left with 2million naira from the 40 million naira declared to his friends earlier on. What happened? On the very day he declared 40million naira to his friends, his Accountant friend came back at night to ask for a loan of 5million naira. Deji, a simple and generous man asked what the money was for. Tayo said he had collected a bank loan to build his house 5 years before that period and if he didn’t pay back by next week, he will lose the house. ‘Ah!’Deji said. He dashed him 2.5million naira. Tayo was amazed, he thanked him and left joyfully. The second day, Jelili came with his wife and children crying, he said his wife has been diagonised of breast cancer in the previous month and now the doctor is saying if she’s not operated in the next one month the family would lose her. Adedeji became very afraid hearing this. He asked ‘how much are we talking about? Your wife won’t die when I am here. God forbid!’ ‘2.5million naira’_ Said Jelili. ‘How much do you have on you.’_ Adedeji asked ‘ We have used the money on us to buy drugs for her.’_Jelili submitted. ‘Oh, no problem.’ Said Adedeji Adedeji wrote a cheque of 2.5 million naira in Jelili wife’s name and handled it to them. They were so happy and prayed for him before they registered their leave. Adedeji family members didn’t spare him as well, they will come with one problem or the other which he usually absorbed. However, what is amazing is that everyone wants his wristband, wristwatch, shoes, jackets, trousers, sun glasses, and necklaces. It is as if they want to run him naked. In the few months of his stay at home, Adedeji had spent 38million naira and dashed out almost all his belongings to relatives and friends who had suddenly become beggars. He has a small diary where he kept daily expenses. Out of the 38 million naira spent, he had only spent 25m naira (for house) and 2.5m naira (purchase of car and upkeep) on himself. The remaining 10 million naira have been spent on other people. Adedeji called his friends and asked for the way forward. Since he needed to start a business. He had only 2m naira left. His partner, Tomi has been continuously disturbed by her friends to ask Adedeji to buy her a car. Tomi was a great woman who believes in hard work. She felt she would buy herself a car in due season and should not be a liability to the poor man. Everyone around Adedeji without planning it wanted to ripped him apart. His mother who is living in a house built for her by Adedeji is also complaining that he’s not doing enough for her. Adedeji is getting tired of too many demands from friends and relatives in just few months of his stay at home. It is now glaring that if he doesn’t stop dolling out money to people as usual, he would soon become wretched. In one afternoon, a guy who also doubles as a Plumber working in his property called him on phone to advice him about his relatives and friends. In is words: ‘Egbon, you are a nice person I know, but please trust no body. Do you know after Mr Tayo padded the house price with 5m naira, I do not expect him to still be among the people that will be saying evil about you. Even egbon Jelili lied that his wife has breast cancer to collect 2.5m naira from you.’ ‘What are you talking about?’_Asked Adedeji. ‘Well, I know you didn’t know that the property was originally sold for 20m. It was egbon Tayo that added 5m naira to it. He said you are a very stingy person and if he doesn’t add anything to the house’s price, he won’t get anything from you. He also said for the 20 years you have stayed in the US, he didn’t owe you 5 kobo.’ ‘Are you sure of what you are saying? Are you sure young man?’ _Adedeji asked angrily. ‘Sir, please calm down, this is Nigeria o. I am saying this because on my way to work this morning I saw him with brother Jelili and two other guys, I don’t know. They were talking about a business for you or so. I didn’t know the exact thing, but I heard of them talking about their own commissions. Sir, all I want to say is please be careful and don’t tell anyone or act in anyway that would make your friends to know I said anything to you. Our people are very dangerous. Money is hard to come by this days and people would do anything for money. I don’t want to lose you! Have a nice day Sir.’ _The guy dropped the call. Adedeji was flabbergasted, he could not believe his ears. His best friends have turned against him to be his worst enemies. After all he had done for them and their families. In the next day, his friends came as expected with two other guys, the guys said they own a Quarry in Abeokuta that worth 5m naira and would love to sell to him because they were prepared to relocate abroad. They estimated the Quarry to originally worth 20m naira but because they needed cash they would like to sell to him at 5m naira. Adedeji asked his friends about the deal. They said they have confirmed it and it’s so real. That it’s even unbelievable that the guys agreed to sell at that rate. ‘Well, since I came back from the States I have been thinking of a business. I think I like this one. However, Tayo and Jelili are aware I only have 2m naira left on me. And I will have to maintain myself too from the money. I don’t think I have enough to buy your Quarry this time, I am afraid.’ Tayo and Jelili oared, let’s talk to this guys in camera, we will get back. Few minutes later, they came in and said the guys had agree to collect 1.5m naira. That he could pay the remaining money once income starts coming in. Adedeji at this point was able to link what the guy told him on phone and what is playing out. He told his friends; ‘if I want to buy this Quarry you guys will have to help me raise 3.5m naira. And we will have to pay this guys once and for all. There is no how 1.5m naira would be enough to process US visa for two people.’ He then turned to the guys, ‘please go. I have your numbers, I will call you tomorrow on the deal.’_He submitted. The guys left. His friends told him they have not even eaten since yesterday and they have also been thinking he could help them with some money. Adedeji looked at the two of them, sobered and asked them never to come around him again. ‘You are traitors and wicked.’ They both denied the allegations but Adedeji made them to write statements with the police that they will not come around him again.” The question is, what was Adedeji’s offense to his friends, relatives, and his community? Over the years, I have seen how we unreasonably dupe and ungratefully exploit Nigerians in the diaspora. We have this wicked spirit of entitlements. We act as if money grow on the streets of London, Tokyo, Paris, New York and others. We are never just on these hustlers. Yet, we sleep 18hours in the 24hours that makes one day. While our brothers and sisters work-out their asses almost 18hours everyday. A Londoner will send a phone to you, you will call him and said ‘I don’t want this phone you sent. I want IPhone 11 max. My friends said this is too small for my level.’ If you have levels, why are you depending on another to buy you a phone? What is wrong with you buying yourself your desired phone? Shior! Stop living the life of an ungrateful beggar! When an Americana comes home, we want to collect everything he/she is wearing and leave him naked if possible. And at times, when they are naked, we also want to end their lives. Evil lives in our heart and mind. This has to stop! How many people in the diaspora is not stingy to you? You don’t have a job, yet you drive a fine car, wears fine cloths, shoes and drink three bottles of beer daily, all because you have been asked to help build your brothers’ house. Yet, he’s stingy, this has to stop! No one owes you a dime. If you want money, work for it. If you ever made your way to Europe or America you will know that Nigerians in the diaspora suffers more (racism, cold, self-denial) to be what they are, than you living in the comfort of your country and home. We have to be grateful for any penny these people are willing to send home. God bless all Nigerian hustling abroad. "The conspiracy thickens by the day and the US government in conjunction with Banks French connection are not relenting" It is said that in the game of interest, the only loser is the one who has no one to protect his interest, the one who has no interest. On May 8, 2015, Akinwumi Adesina won the election for the post of the President of the African Develmaximumopment Bank (AfDB). On September 1,2015, he was sworn in as the 8th president. Adesina beat seven other contestants, among them Ethiopia’s Minister of Finance Sufian Ahmed, Tunisia’s Finance Minister Jaloul Ayed, Cape Verde’s Finance Minister Christian Duarte and Sierra Leone’s Foreign Affairs Minister Samura Kamara. It was a feat and Nigerians everywhere celebrated him for it. Upon his inauguration, he spoke deep-heartedly about the things he would like to do within his tenure, vis; light up and power Africa, feed Africa, integrate Africa, industrialise Africa and improve quality of life for the people of Africa. Put prim and proper, he had a vision to expand opportunities and unlock potentials for countries, women, youth, private sector and the continent. Everyone believed him. Afterall, he was the man who turned Nigeria’s agricultural sector around and beat it into some form of shape. The bank already had structure and he could do great things with it. Well, it has been five years since Adesina stepped into that office and, not out of place, he wants a second term. Who wouldn’t? He has not done badly. Well, given the high-level politics at play, it is not surprising that, suddenly, out of the blues, Adesina is about to get thrown under the bus for not being ethical, according to ‘whistle blowers’ within the bank. According to feelers from that bank’s corridors, it is not what he has done more than how he has gone about it. First off, the bank’s shareholders are, to put it mildly, powerful men (‘powerful’ being the ‘least’ of the available adjectives, in this case, none could suffice). Adesina stepped on toes even before he became president of the AfDB, when Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala started the lobbying for him to be given a shot. The shareholders preferred any of Chad’s Bedoumra Kordjé, Zimbabwe’s Thomas Zondo Sakala and Cape Verde’s Cristina Duarte. The choice of Adesina was from far out left and did not sit well with many. Upon his assumption, three vice-presidents left the bank’s employ; a senior vice-president, vice-president (human resources) and vice-president (infrastructure). There were enduring grievances. Many. Soon, they began to show up. In July 2016, Adesina, who was barely a year in office, got his first taste of the feel around the place when the French Treasury pointed out (quite oddly) that “the AfDB’s new president very seldom speaks in French, and uses the language rarely, if at all, when talking about strategic or financial matters”. For Onukogu Okechukwu, an Ibadan-based lawyer, it was a sign of things to come. “Even as a teenager growing up, I always knew the AfDB was a French-dominated place and, once Adesina signed in, I knew he was in trouble. This man understands a number of languages, French being one of them. He conducts press conferences in French and converses in the language; yet, you say he that? This whole thing stinks of politics of give-and-take and he could be sacrificed for someone or something.” According to documents unearthed back in April, Adesina has found himself in hot water for various reasons. These documents, addressed to the Office of Integrity and Anti-Corruption (PIAC) and to the presidents of the Ethics Committee and Audit and Finance Committee, accuse Adesina of “various cases of alleged breaches of the Code of Conduct”. These documents point to departures/resignations, recruitment of staff which they deem “questionable”, as well as contracts awarded in violation of the bank’s statutes and ethics. According to the documents, Adesina’s coming brought about “unusual managerial style”, the “dominance of impunity and nepotism”, the “chaotic management of human resources” and the “financial waste and lack of budgetary discipline” within the organisation. According to a political observer, Leo Mefor, the anonymous staff members who blew the said whistle have crafted their move for every stage. One of the documents points out that two deals, together, valued at “more than $18m” were awarded by the Statistics Department to two information processing experts, one of whom is an internationally renowned expert from New York and the other a Russian national “who is little known outside the relevant circles”. The anonymous document states that the deals were “fraudulently awarded” based on “fraud investigations and internal audits” which established “the guilt” of one of the bank’s top officials in 2016. The official was, as it happens, supposedly promoted several years later, representing “another example of impunity”, according to French magazine ‘Jeune Afrique’. Two additional negotiated contracts with a Kenyan firm concern the Human Resources Department and amount to $2.1m, which – according to the document – is 20 times the approved sign-off limit for the manager involved. No disciplinary action seems to have been taken against the manager. Moreover, the authors of the letter were outraged that he left his position at the bank “with a bonus compensation paid by the AfDB”. Another contract valued at $5.46m awarded by a Nigerian agricultural firm was found to have been approved by the bank (even though the firm did not meet the criteria) and the deal negotiated by a manager of the bank who has direct family ties with Adesina. The matter was referred to the bank’s ethics committee (PIAC) headed by Paula Santos da Costa, a member of the Portuguese Bar Association. However, after the committee’s finding and clearing Adesina of any wrong-doing, the staff wrote again, wondering why the Swiss deal was brought before the executive board. They mentioned that there virtually was no ethics committee and no means of holding staff who were liable to unethical conducts responsible for their actions. “Let us look at this thing objectively,” Mefor started. “If the allegations are right, it means that Adesina may have jumped the gun a few times.Beyond that, there could be an orchestrated attempt to put him to the sword, even if he has been naïve enough to fall for these. “I look beyond the flying memos and letters and all I see is a booby trap for Adesina. Who are the men and women behind this plot? Why do they want Adesina out? What do they stand to gain? My brother, this is a game of interests and the fact that he is Nigerian does not make it any easier. He can be painted just to get him out. It is sad but, I can assure you that the people who are writing these things may be the ones who back him up at meetings, with votes and, then, go behind to do this. Many of them have been there for eons and have seen presidents come and go. You cannot put anything past them,” he said. After Adesina was cleared by the AfDB’s ethics board and the issue put to rest, the US Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, rejected plans by the AfDB’s board to end the investigation and called for an independent probe. But it has not dampened expectations that Adesina will come out clean. Former director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Arunma Oteh, took to Twitter to declare her support for Akinwunmi Adesina. “President @AfDB_Group is a man of integrity & a great leader. He remains the best man 2lead Africa’s great institution 4the next 5 years. I was #AfDB Staff17 years – loan officer 4North & West Africa -Treasurer and Group VP [and I know this],” she wrote. Also declaring his support and praying for things to be resolved amicably was Minister of Finance, Economy and Planning of Equatorial Guinea, Cesar Mba Abogo, who said: “…as a testimony of my support for Dr. Adesina and all the Bank executives who have personally and adversely [been] affected by this situation and unfounded allegations, a few verses penned by John Donne (and popularised by Hemingway) come to mind. “’No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend’s or of thine own were: any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for whom the bells tolls; it tolls for thee’.” What does Adesina think, though? When he appeared before the committee on April 8, he told the committee that the document provided “specific facts” to show the allegations did not meet the standards to merit as a “whistle-blower complaint under the terms spelt out in the Bank’s Whistle-blowing and Complaints Handling Policy of January 2007”. Adesina said the petitioners were not acting in good faith, as a group of independent Bank staff members who confessed to being former members of the ‘Group of Concerned Staff Members,’ wrote a ‘Disassociation Note’ on March 9, 2020. “The former group members said they were being manipulated by a group of non-regional Executive Directors behind Steven Dowd (who is a representative of the US government at the bank),” to discredit his (Adesina) candidacy. He told the committee the confession of the former Group members was “sufficient evidence the petition was not to expose fraud, corruption or other misconduct, but for other ulterior motives”. The fact that Adesina responded to the 16 allegations and finished with “…in summary, every single one of the 16 allegations against me in the Disclosure remains unsubstantiated. I have not violated the Code of Conduct. The Ethics Committee should so find and dismiss the matter” means little to those behind this move to get rid of him. While it is clear that the some governments have another agenda in this matter, the questions remain: who wants to get rid of Adesina? Are the interests so great that he cannot go another 5-year term? If he was so flawed, why did they let him receive those awards? Why is the Nigerian government looking on without pitching into this? Why is Chief Olusegun Obasanjo silent over the issue; is he aware of the undercurrents? When will Okonjo-Iweala speak up? Have they agreed secretly for Adesina to be thrown under the bus? Someone wants to state emphatically that Adesina has reached the end of his road, but like he finished in his response to Oteh, “…the African Development Bank is a sterling institution and it shall continue to be so, against all odds…. Africa’s light will always shine. We will continue the race to develop our continent with pride and dignity. We will stay the course and finish the race. It is not yet Uhuru! https://quicknews-africa.net/afdb-akinwunmi-adesina-and-the-invisible-enemies/ |

LET'S CELEBRATE OUR OWN South Broward senior is school’s first black valedictorian with highest GPA in school history HOLLYWOOD, FLA. (WSVN) - The first black valedictorian of South Broward High School’s graduating class has a record-setting GPA. “As of now, it’s a 5.6045,” said senior Timi Adelakun. “I think by graduation it’ll go a little bit higher, but that’s my number.” The 18-year-old has earned the highest recorded GPA at the Hollywood school. “It’s good, especially the history breaking part, that me being the first black valedictorian, and also me having the highest GPA in my school,” Adelakun said. “It’s good to know.” Adelakun said his grades excelled early on in his life, and he kept them up ever since. “South Broward sets you up to start off with college-level courses, so you’re pretty much in a good position GPA wise,” he said. “South Broward High School, which is an Ace Program school, and each Ace class is a college credit. At the same time, they offer AP courses and at the same time they offer Broward College courses.” Adelakun said he has been taking all three of the courses offered during his time in high school. “I’ve been taking over 20 college courses worth of credit, and because of that, my AP credits, my Ace credits and my dual enrollment credits boost my GPA,” he said. With such a high GPA it would seem like Adelakun wouldn’t have time for anything except for studying, but that is not the case. He balances out the stress from his STEM classes with his love of theater. “When I was in high school I was always like the STEM-focused kid. I was in calculus and biology, but at the same time I was doing extracurricular drama club/Thespian Honors Society,” Adelakun said. “Through there I’ve been doing shows and competitions. Through that love of theater, I’ve found a way to do both at the same time.” When it came time to pick a college to attend, Adelakun had many options to choose from. He was accepted into the University of Miami, Columbia University, Julliard, UCLA, University of Southern California, Berkeley, The University of Chicago and Pomona College. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Adelakun wasn’t able to visit and tour the college campuses, so he had to make his decision from home. “I’m going to attend Pomona College,” he said. “The school gave me a full scholarship, so if I go there it’s covered for.” The Pomona College campus is just outside of Los Angeles, which is a prime location for Adelakun’s interests. “I chose that school ’cause it’s liberal arts, and I’m able to double major,” he said. “I’m doing molecular biology and theatre. As of now, I’m thinking I could like merge my love for the arts and maybe biology at the same time, like in the field of orthodontistry that uses aesthetics and biology at the same time. But as of now I’m really open, I’m not really sure set on anything.” Adelakun was also not able to attend graduation with his classmates due to the spread of the virus, but he is ready for his next adventure regardless. “I’m excited to go onto new heights and kind of go out of my comfort zone,” he said. https://www.google.com/amp/s/wsvn.com/news/local/south-broward-high-school-senior-makes-history-as-first-black-valedictorian-with-highest-gpa/amp/ |

It came down to choosing between our lives & livelihoods but we chose livelihood not cos we don't value our lives but cos millions are drowning in the ocean of acute poverty due to years of utter mismanagement of the nations resources by those we entrusted the resources of the nation to. I'm not by any means comparing Canada with Nigeria. That will be unfair at this point but just trying to point out how resources can affect our thinking and values. Most of the nation has been under lockdown for 7 weeks. 90% of Canadians believe it is the right thing to do. 64% of Canadians believe COVID-19 is a greater threat than financial crisis. 70% against opening the economy if the virus is not fully controlled. Why the difference in mindset, the economy was not just good before the virus, virtually every facet of life of everyone affected are being sorted out for 4 months. Long term approach. From paying those affected monthly, 75% of payroll wages, 75% of rent for SME, payment to students everything is for 4 months and so many can still work from remote areas without being in the office. Our people are not different. I believe we are as risk-averse people than others but when a people are on survival mode, when 80% of the economy is shadow economy that most depend on daily income with no savings, when a whopping 92.1% live under $4.5 a day equivalent of buying mocha or latte, there is virtually no other option but to take a risk and damn the consequences. If after 60 years of independence we have nothing to give our citizens to stay at home just for a month so that they can be protected from public health crisis in spite of all the resources God has bestowed us with, that is shameful. If after 60 years only less than 8% of our population earn $165 per month it is shameful. If after 60 years, only less than 4GW of electricity is what we can offer our people, that's the equivalent of what some cities consume then it is shameful. We can change the trajectory of the nation. The next 50 years can look differently from the past 60 years. We can start by changing these sets of leaders and stop being their cheerleaders whatever party but make them accountable irrespective of their parties. A nation with over 70m illiterates can't prosper. A nation where out of school children are over 13m can't prosper. We will have to invest heavily in education and healthcare. A healthy nation is a prosperous nation. We will have to declare a state of emergency on poverty and come up with substantive poverty eradication projects not palliatives. Our people surely deserve better https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10157293389327944&id=671537943 mynd44 lalasticala |
