PoliticsTax Reform Bills: Customs Duties Extend Beyond Revenue Collection - Okey Ibeke by Orabi(op): 4:23pm On Feb 27, 2025
A Customs and tax expert, has emphasized that the duties of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) are highly technical and extend far beyond revenue collection.

He made these remarks during an interview with journalists on Thursday in Abuja, following a public hearing on tax reform bills organized by the Special Committee on Tax Reform Bills on Wednesday.

Ibeke described the NCS as a specialized agency requiring advanced technical skills to effectively carry out its functions.

He warned that the proposed tax reforms could undermine the agency’s specialized operations, which are critical to Nigeria’s revenue generation.

The bills under consideration include the Nigeria Tax Bill, Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

While Comptroller-General of the NCS, Adewale Adeniyi, stated that the reforms align with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to an efficient tax system, Ibeke cautioned that they could jeopardize the NCS’s ability to perform its core functions.

Ibeke expressed concerns that designated revenue agencies may lack the technical expertise, specialized workforce, and continuous training required to handle NCS operations.

He noted that these agencies might struggle to detect undervalued or misclassified goods, potentially leading to the acceptance of inaccurate importer declarations.

“Customs work is more than just collecting revenue. It involves classifying cargo, understanding tariff classifications, and conducting customs valuations. Without the expertise to classify cargo and determine the applicable duty rates, there will be significant challenges. Only well-trained customs personnel can effectively perform these functions,” he explained.

He further highlighted the importance of applying Rules of Origin (RoO), which are essential for determining the national source of products. RoO, he said, is critical for assessing the value of imports, calculating appropriate revenue, and identifying fraudulent practices—tasks that general tax administration systems are ill-equipped to handle.

Ibeke warned that passing the bills without necessary adjustments could render the NCS redundant and negatively impact revenue generation for Nigeria’s development projects.

“Is the Federal Government planning to dismantle the Customs Service? Will they employ customs officers to work in the new agency? Will they create offices for them within the agency?

“This could lead to confusion. Ultimately, the government, which aims to maximize revenue, stands to lose the most,” he said.

He added that if the NCS is no longer responsible for revenue collection, it could result in reduced import duty collections. “Customs officers may simply approve whatever declarations importers submit, leading to significant revenue losses,” he cautioned.

Ibeke pointed out that the NCS has already made significant strides in modernizing its operations through its Trade Modernisation Project. The deployment of the ‘B Odogwu’ software, for instance, has contributed to increased revenue collection and positioned the service to surpass its 2025 revenue target.

He urged the Federal Government to increase funding for the NCS to address revenue collection challenges rather than repealing the 2023 NCS Act, which took over eight years to pass into law. “The NCS has established infrastructure and is leveraging technology to facilitate trade. Repealing the Act would undermine these efforts and hinder progress,” he said.

During the public hearing, Comptroller-General Adeniyi urged the committee to uphold the NCS’s mandate under the 2023 Act. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that the final bills do not contradict the Act, thereby preserving the agency’s core functions and operational efficiency.

As the debate over the tax reform bills continues, stakeholders are calling for a balanced approach that strengthens Nigeria’s tax system without compromising the critical functions of the Nigeria Customs Service.
PoliticsGift Johnbull: Championing South-south Engagement In President Tinubu’s Administ by Orabi(op): 5:32pm On Feb 21, 2025
By Godsknow Pereye

In the dynamic landscape of Nigerian poli5cs and governance, few individuals embody the spirit of grassroots mobiliza5on, strategic influence, and civic responsibility as profoundly as Gi> Johnbull. Currently serving as the Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Community Engagement (South-South), Johnbull has carved a niche for herself as a poli5cal strategist, entrepreneur, humanitarian, and advocate for inclusive governance.

Her journey has been defined by an unwavering commitment to na5on-building, youth empowerment, and poli5cal par5cipa5on, making her one of the most influen5al figures in Nigeria’s civic and poli5cal space and a major campaigner for the President in the South-South region.

From an early stage in her career, Johnbull demonstrated a remarkable ability to connect with people and drive poli5cal engagement. As the Na5onal Coordinator of Progressive Nigerian Women and Youth, she played a pivotal role in advancing the ideologies of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) and ensuring increased civic par5cipa5on.

Under her leadership, the movement launched numerous ini5a5ves aimed at fostering poli5cal awareness and deepening democra5c engagement. One of the most significant among these was the “Get Your PVC” campaign, which encouraged and facilitated youth par5cipa5on in elec5ons. Recognizing the importance of educa5on in shaping informed ci5zens, she also spearheaded community outreach programs, including the distribu5on of educa5onal materials to school children in Ogoja/Yala, Cross River State.

Her deep understanding of poli5cal strategy and community mobiliza5on saw her become an integral part of the APC Registra5on and Revalida5on Exercise in Kuje Area Council, Federal Capital Territory. Working under the leadership of Salma Musa of the Tinubu Support Group, Johnbull provided logis5cal and technical support that resulted in the registra5on of over 11,000 new party members across ten wards. Her exper5se in electoral processes earned her a place on several high-stakes commi_ees, including the Ebonyi State APC Congress in 2021, where she played a cri5cal role in conduc5ng a free and fair elec5on that produced the state’s APC execu5ve body, with the backing of Governor Dave Umahi.

Johnbull’s contribu5ons to the APC extended to the na5onal stage, where she was a key member of the protocol commi_ee responsible for organizing the 2022 APC Presiden5al Primaries. Her me5culous planning and execu5on ensured a smooth electoral process, culmina5ng in the emergence of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the party’s presiden5al candidate. Her involvement in shaping the party’s electoral strategy con5nued as she served as Secretary of the Senate Appeal Panel Commi_ee, where she oversaw the successful re-run elec5on of Professor Ben Ayade, the former Governor of Cross River State. Addi5onally, she played an ac5ve role in the Na5onal Delegate Congress, helping to elect the delegates who would go on to determine the party’s presiden5al candidate.

Beyond elec5oneering, Johnbull has remained a driving force in youth empowerment and poli5cal advocacy. Her role in the Progressive Youth Conference (PYC) in 2021 was instrumental in bringing together over 3,000 young Nigerians, providing them with the inspira5on and

mo5va5on needed to ac5vely engage in governance and leadership. Her commitment to women’s empowerment is equally noteworthy. As Na5onal Coordinator for Aspire Young Women Forum (AYWF), a subset of Aspire Women Forum (AWF), she led numerous ini5a5ves advoca5ng for women’s inclusion in poli5cs, financial literacy, mentorship, and behavioral coaching for young girls. Under her leadership, the AYWF organized the Happy Conference, an intergenera5onal event that brought together accomplished women from various industries to mentor and inspire the next genera5on of female leaders.

Johnbull’s influence in the 2023 presiden5al elec5ons further cemented her reputa5on as a poli5cal mobilizer of excep5onal skill. She was deeply involved in the Renewed Hope Concert, an event that brought together over 7,000 youths to galvanize support for the Tinubu presidency. She also spearheaded the #EatWithTinubuShefma Project, a unique ini5a5ve aimed at fostering direct engagement between the APC presiden5al candidates and the Nigerian electorate. Within the APC’s internal structure, she played a crucial role as a commi_ee member for the Cross River Gubernatorial Primaries in 2022, and the Na5onal Assembly Screening Commi_ee, further solidifying her posi5on as a trusted strategist and mobilizer.

As she steps into 2025, Johnbull is taking her passion for community engagement and development to new heights with the launch of two landmark ini5a5ves aligned with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. The first, Community Voices, is an ambi5ous program designed to amplify grassroots concerns and ensure direct communica5on between local governments and the presidency. Under this ini5a5ve, Johnbull is facilita5ng monthly delibera5ve mee5ngs across the 123 local governments in the South-South, further bridging the gaps between youth and women in the region and the Presidency. By providing communi5es with an organized plahorm to discuss pressing issues and formulate resolu5ons, she is ensuring their concerns are formally presented to the president, advoca5ng for execu5ve a_en5on and ac5on. By crea5ng a structured dialogue between the government and its people, Community Voices is set to revolu5onize civic engagement in Nigeria.

Her second major ini5a5ve for 2025, Project Earn From The Soil, is an ambi5ous ₦10 billion fundraising drive aimed at tackling rural poverty and enhancing agricultural produc5vity in the South-South. Recognizing the crucial role of smallholder farmers in Nigeria’s food security and economic development, Johnbull is working to mobilize resources to fund rural farmers through coopera5ve socie5es. This ini5a5ve seeks to provide financial support, training, and market access to farmers, ensuring that agriculture remains a viable and profitable sector for local communi5es. By empowering farmers with the resources, they need to succeed, Project Earn From The Soil will contribute significantly to economic growth, job crea5on, and sustainable development in rural areas.
Gi> Johnbull’s relentless drive, strategic acumen, and deep commitment to community-driven governance have posi5oned her as a formidable force in Nigeria’s poli5cal and social landscape. With her bold new ini5a5ves for 2025, she con5nues to champion the voices of the South-South people, strengthen grassroots par5cipa5on, and drive economic empowerment in alignment with the Renewed Hope vision for a more prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.

PoliticsNorthern Coalition Mourns Adebanjo, Clark, Expresses Solidarity With Afenifere, by Orabi(op): 4:08pm On Feb 19, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of two revered elder statesmen, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a chieftain of Afenifere, and Chief Edwin Clark, the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).

Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s socio-political landscape, passed away at the age of 96. Known for his unwavering commitment to justice, equity, and the unity of Nigeria, he was a tireless advocate for the interests of the Yoruba people and played a crucial role in national discourse.

Similarly, Edwin Clark, a formidable voice for the Niger Delta, died at the age of 97.

In a statement signed by CNG’s National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the group extended its condolences to the Afenifere socio-cultural organization, the Yoruba nation, and the Adebanjo family, as well as to the people of the Niger Delta mourning Edwin Clark’s demise.

He said: “Pa Ayo Adebanjo was a stalwart in Nigeria’s political and socio-cultural sphere, dedicating his life to the pursuit of equity, justice, and the advancement of the interests of his people within a united Nigeria.

“His unwavering commitment to these ideals, even in his final moments, serves as an enduring inspiration to all Nigerians of different ethnic stocks and nationalities.

“Similarly, Edwin Clark was a leading voice in regional and national discourse, known for mediating peace among warring communities and politicians in the Niger Delta region.

“He championed the cause of protecting the interest of his region and his people, which he did passionately within the country's political and socio-economic challenges.”

Despite often taking different positions on national issues, the CNG recognizes both leaders as compatriots who stood firm for their respective peoples and strived tirelessly to protect their interests in Nigeria.

He added, “As key members of Afenifere and PANDEF, Pa Adebanjo and Edwin Clark played pivotal roles in advocating for the rights and welfare of their people while contributing significantly to national discourse and the struggle for a better Nigeria.

“Their legacies of service, courage, and principled leadership will forever remain etched in the annals of our nation’s history. The CNG recognizes the profound loss this represents to the Yoruba nation, the Niger Delta, and indeed, the entire country.
We stand in solidarity with the families of both leaders during this difficult time.

“We pray that the Almighty God grants them the fortitude to bear these irreparable losses and that the souls of Pa Adebanjo and Edwin Clark find eternal rest. May their legacies continue to inspire generations to come, and may their visions for a just, equitable, and prosperous Nigeria never be forgotten."
PoliticsCNG Insists Nnamdi Kanu Must Pay For Blood Of Northerners, Security Personnel by Orabi(op): 4:15pm On Feb 13, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) condemns in the strongest terms the terrorist tendencies of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed terror outfit, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Kanu's recent behavior, including his brazen actions in the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday where he faces trial for calls for violence and anarchy, are deeply concerning and pose a serious threat to the peace and stability of Nigeria.

CNG criticized Kanu’s recent courtroom behavior, where he allegedly insulted the prosecuting lawyer and demanded the judge recuse himself, and insisted that Kanu must be held accountable for his alleged incitement of violence, attacks on security personnel, and killings of northern citizens.

In a statement released by CNG National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, described Kanu’s conduct, both in and out of court as disrespectful to the rule of law and a threat to national stability.

The group described Obi’s stance as a betrayal of national unity and an insult to the victims of IPOB’s violence, particularly in northern Nigeria.

The CNG emphasized that Nnamdi Kanu has a history of inciting violence, particularly through online broadcasts from Radio Biafra, which allegedly encouraged attacks on security forces, electoral institutions, and innocent civilians, especially those of northern origin.

The group argued that Kanu’s actions have led to hundreds of deaths, destruction of property, and attacks on security personnel, yet Obi continues to demand his freedom while seeking political support from Nigerians, including northerners.

Charanchi said: “By insulting the prosecuting lawyer and demanding the judge to recuse himself from the case, Kanu has shown a lack of respect for the legal process and the professionalism that should be maintained in a court of law. His refusal to recognize the authority of the court and his inflammatory remarks about the judiciary being a "shrine to injustice" are clear acts of contempt and abuse of the legal system and an act of terror; offences that are by themselves punishable.

“Kanu's contemptuous behavior towards the Nigerian government and judiciary has not only undermined the rule of law but has also incited violence and division within the country.

“The CNG has been at the forefront of addressing the violent and extremist actions of the IPOB and their quest for a separate state of Biafra. The CNG has consistently warned against the dangers of allowing such movements to gain momentum and has called for a peaceful process for separation to prevent further bloodshed and anarchy in Nigeria.

“The Kaduna Declaration made by the CNG highlighted the need for the Igbo people to leave northern Nigeria and join their Biafran brethren in the East to pursue their dream of a separate nation. This declaration was a response to the violent and hateful rhetoric and actions of IPOB, which have targeted the state and other ethnic groups in Nigeria.

“The CNG has made several representations to the Nigerian government, the United Nations, and foreign diplomatic missions to draw attention to the escalating violence and threats posed by IPOB. The coalition has called for international intervention to facilitate a peaceful separation and prevent the country from descending into another civil war.”

Observations

Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of IPOB, has been at the centre of a subversive campaign against the Nigerian State. Consequently, Nnamdi Kanu was arrested on 14th October 2015 and charged to court for treasonable felony, among other crimes. He was granted bail by the Federal High Court, Abuja on 25th April 2017. He, however, breached the bail conditions and fled abroad.

While in self-exile, Nnamdi Kanu intensified his subversive campaign, using online Radio Biafra to instigate violence and incite members of IPOB to commit violent attacks against civil and democratic institutions, particularly the security personnel, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and civilians mostly of Northern Nigerian extraction. He instigated the destruction of public and private properties across the country.

As a result of these criminal activities, IPOB was proscribed and designated a terrorist organisation by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, in an order made on 20th September 2017. Despite the proscription of IPOB by the Federal Government, Nnamdi Kanu continued the subversive campaign, instigating and inciting broadcasts to direct members of the IPOB to launch attacks on the government.

On 12th December 2020, Eastern Security Network” (ESN) was formed by Nnamdi Kanu as an armed wing of IPOB with the mandate to advance the nefarious agenda of the outlawed group. ESN continued to launch attacks on security personnel, civilians perceived as enemies as well as the destruction of private and public properties.

In 2020 Nigeria found itself grappling with a protest. Beginning in October 2020, young men and women across many cities in Nigeria, mostly in the southern part of the country gathered, calling on the government to disband the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigerian police force. Tagged #EndSARS, the protesters demand was clear as it was legitimate.

The EndSARS protests which were peaceful and orderly however played into the sinister plans of Nnamdi Kanu, whereby he seized the protests through subversive and inciting online broadcasts and actively commanded and directed attacks and killings on prominent Nigerians whom he mentioned by their names including the current Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, northern citizens, security personnel and facilities.

As a result of these broadcasts, members of IPOB attacked and killed more than 500 northerners living as minorities in the South East, security personnel and burnt down Police stations, correctional centres, INEC offices, bus terminals, the Palace of Oba of Lagos, Banks, hospitals, shopping malls, vehicles, assets owned by the President Tinubu amongst others.

As a result of Kanu's direct orders, 19 offices, 18 logistical vehicles, several election materials, equipment and ICT gadgets belonging to INEC were destroyed in Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Cross River, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo States. 164 police stations and formations, including the Police Headquarters in Owerri, Imo State, were attacked by IPOB/ESN members.

Consequent upon the instigating directives of Nnamdi Kanu, members of IPOB/ESN carried out massive attacks on democratic institutions especially INEC Facilities with a view to hampering the democratic process in Nigeria. These attacks that were carried out between October 2020 and June 2021 include the following.

One hundred and seventy-five (175) security personnel were killed by IPOB/ESN, comprising one hundred and twenty-eight (128) policemen, thirty-seven (37) military personnel and ten (10) other security operatives ; one hundred forty-four (144) injured while six hundred twenty-eight (628) vehicles were destroyed.

The killing of prominent Nigerians; there were gruesome killings of traditional leaders: Obi 1 of Okwudor autonomous community, Eze E. Anayochukwu Durueburuo and Eze Sampson Osunwa of Ihebineowerre autonomous community as well as the killings of Dr Chike Akunyili and eight others as well as the killing of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak on 30th May. 2021).

Three hundred and ninety-six (396) firearms and seventeen thousand seven hundred and thirty-eight (17,738) ammunition were carted away during the IPOB/ESN attacks;

There were three (3) IPOB/ESN attacks on Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), including the Headquarters of NCoS, Owerri, Imo State where one thousand eight hundred and forty-one (1,841) inmates escaped;

The Headquarters of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Umuahia, Abia State was also attacked by IPOB/ESN leading to the death of one (1) officer;

There were several IPOB/ESN attacks and destruction (arson) of public and private properties during the EndSARS and Biafra agitations across the country, especially in the South-East and South-South regions, notably the Palace of the Oba of Lagos where twelve (12) flats were completely looted and vandalized, the country home of the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, was burnt, over one hundred and fifty (150) buses burnt at the Lagos Bus Terminal, Sen. Ndoma Egba’s home in Calabar Municipal, Cross River State, was completely looted and vandalized, Lagos State DNA and Forensic Centre, City Hall Race Course, First Bank Branch Lagos, Lagos State Public Works Commission, Nigeria Port Authority (NPA), Marina, Lagos, High Court Igbosere, Lagos, were all burnt, amongst other heinous crimes committed.

Established facts

The demand for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu is not only unjust but also counterproductive to the efforts to restore peace and order in the country. It is imperative for the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure that justice is duly served in order to prevent further escalation of the crisis and to promote reconciliation and healing among the various ethnic groups in Nigeria.

It is deeply concerning that Peter Obi, a supposed leader, would align himself with someone like Kanu, who has blood on his hands and has caused so much suffering and division in the country. It is the height of insensitivity and irresponsibility for Obi to ignore the pain and loss that Kanu's actions have caused, simply because they share the same ethnicity.

The fact that Obi is seeking the votes of Nigerians, including those from the Northern region, while advocating for Kanu's release is a clear indication of his lack of concern for the lives and well-being of fellow northern Nigerian citizens. It is a betrayal of trust and a disregard for the suffering that has been inflicted on innocent people as a result of Kanu's incitement.

The diabolical scheme planned and exhibited by IPOB, with the support of a significant portion of the Igbo elites and leaders, has had a detrimental impact on the unity and stability of Nigeria

It has also been established that Kanu is not alone in his subversive activities. He has accomplices in Nigeria and abroad, individuals and groups as well as state and non-state actors who are aiding and facilitating his campaign against the people and state of Nigeria. Some of the state actors aided Kanu, even as a fugitive, in his destructive mission, ignoring the terrorist nature of his activities.

The destructive activities of IPOB/ESN pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s national security and its corporate existence, which resulted in the re-arrest of Nnamdi Kanu and members of his group.

The morale of security personnel who have been tasked with maintaining law and order in the face of the challenges posed by IPOB would be severely undermined if Kanu were to be released without facing the consequences of his actions. the land. The families of the slain security personnel who sacrificed everything to the protection of the nation will feel dejected and abandoned. And other families of victims of Kanu's atrocities would be agitated leading to the loss of trust in the ability of government to protect the citizens.

Our stand
1. We demand that government ensures that justice is served by prosecuting and sentencing Kanu appropriately, in accordance with the laws of the land

2. The CNG urges the government to take decisive action against Kanu and his followers, to ensure that the rule of law is upheld and that those who engage in contemptuous behavior are held accountable for their actions. Only through accountability and justice can Nigeria move towards peace and unity.

3. The Nigerian government must take decisive action to address the threat posed by Kanu and IPOB. His calls for war, genocide, and violence must be met with swift and appropriate measures to protect the lives and rights of all Nigerians. Any Igbo leader pleading for the unconditional release of Kanu must henceforth be held as terrorist and complicit.

4. We demand urgent action to check the activities and clamors of IPOB, supported by a significant portion of the Igbo elites, politicians, traditional rulers, and business persons, which have had a destabilizing effect on Nigeria as a whole and pushed the country to the brink of disintegration, threatening the unity and stability of the nation.

5. The support for IPOB from within the Igbo community which has further exacerbated the situation, leading to a deepening of divisions and animosities between different ethnic groups in the country must be checked by government and everyone found complicit be appropriately punished.

6. The demand for the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu by Igbo leaders and elites must be discredited, investigated and punished as it is not only misguided but also insensitive to the feelings and aspirations of those who have been affected by the violence and unrest caused by IPOB's activities.

7. We call for the arrest and prosecution of those, including Peter Obi, an Igbo politician who is shamelessly seeking the votes of Nigerians to become president and yet in the forefront of the calls for the release of Nnamdi Kanu. This is a troubling development, as Kanu has been responsible for inciting violence and unrest in Nigeria with the blood of innocent Nigerians, particularly from the Northern region where hundreds of lives have been lost as a result of his actions.

8. We call on all Northern voters to be wary of politicians like Peter Obi who are willing to sacrifice the safety and security of other constituents in order to further their own political ambitions.

9. We reiterate our calls for a referendum or any other process that would allow for the self determination of any federating unit that feels it wants to go. We have already filed a suit seeking this order at a Federal High Court in Abuja.

10. We regret ever being political allies with the South East, as it is clear that their leaders are willing to put their own interests above the safety and security of the country as a whole. It is time for us to come together as a nation and reject divisive and irresponsible leaders who are more concerned with their own power and influence than with the well-being of the people they are supposed to serve.

Conclusion
The recent resurgence of agitation for the secession of Biafra has brought to light the dangers of violence and division in Nigeria. It is essential that we all come together to reject these destructive forces and work towards a future of peace. This statement by the CNG is a call to action for all Nigerians to stand together against those who seek to cause mayhem and bloodshed.
PoliticsJAMN Slams El-rufai Over Intervention In Ribadu-najatu Dispute by Orabi(op): 6:00pm On Feb 07, 2025
The Joint Action Movement of Nigeria (JAMN), has criticized former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai for his intervention in the ongoing dispute between National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and Hajiya Najatu Mohammed.

The group further accused El-Rufai of attempting to rewrite history, saying that after inflicting hardship and humiliation on a large section of Kaduna State’s population, he now seeks to reinvent himself as a champion of the North.

In a statement signed by Chairman Lawal Sani Ningi and Secretary Deborah Kantiok, JAMN described El-Rufai’s remarks as reckless, misleading, and self-serving, accusing him of prioritizing political manipulation over truth and accountability.

At the center of the controversy are serious allegations made by Najatu Mohammed in a viral video, where she claimed that Ribadu, during his tenure as EFCC Chairman, sought to block the political aspirations of Bola Tinubu, George Akume, and Orji Kalu, whom she described as Nigeria’s most corrupt governors. Ribadu has since demanded evidence, warning of legal consequences for unverified accusations.

He said: “El-Rufai's intervention is particularly alarming given the backdrop of his own legal troubles. Reports indicate that he is facing pending accusations of financial irregularities from the Kaduna State House of Assembly.

“His public support for Najatu Mohammed appears strategically timed, potentially serving as a distraction from his own legal challenges. By aligning himself with a controversial claim, El-Rufai risks further eroding his credibility and prioritizing political expediency over truth and accountability.

“The Joint Action Movement of Nigeria is deeply concerned about the implications of El-Rufai's actions, which reflect a broader pattern of behavior marked by betrayal, inconsistency, and a lack of ethical integrity.

“His tenure as governor of Kaduna State was marred by accusations of dehumanization and the arbitrary dismissal of individuals, actions that starkly contradict his self-proclaimed role as a defender of the "cultured North." Such conduct is not that of a statesman but of a cynical politician seeking to manipulate public opinion for personal gain.

“The embarrassment of El-Rufai seeking a ministerial appointment, only to have his candidacy withdrawn amid ethical concerns, underscores his refusal to accept accountability for his questionable record.

“Instead of reflecting on his past actions, he has chosen a path of confrontation and unsubstantiated claims against the very administration that deemed him unfit for public service. This behavior reeks of bitterness and desperation, as he attempts to regain relevance through manufactured outrage.

“El-Rufai's self-proclaimed role as a messiah for the North is particularly troubling. After inflicting hardship and humiliation on a significant segment of Kaduna State's population, he now attempts to reposition himself as a benevolent leader.

“This cynical attempt to rewrite history and evade responsibility is a clear demonstration of his lack of integrity. The people of Kaduna State, and indeed the wider Nigerian public, are not easily deceived. The memory of his governance and its consequences remains vivid, rendering his current posturing hollow and unconvincing.

“Nasir El-Rufai's intervention in the Ribadu-Mohammed dispute epitomizes his broader political character, characterized by a lack of integrity, a penchant for betrayal, and a demonstrable inability to engage in constructive dialogue.

“His history of inconsistent allegiances, documented ethical failings, and inflammatory rhetoric disqualifies him from offering any meaningful commentary on matters of public importance. His attempts to position himself as a moral authority or defender of any group should be treated with skepticism, given his demonstrable lack of credibility and the weight of his past actions.

“The Joint Action Movement of Nigeria urges the public to critically assess El-Rufai's pronouncements, viewing them not as insightful analysis but as the desperate cries of a discredited figure clinging to irrelevance.

“We call upon the citizens of Nigeria to focus on substantive issues and engage in discourse that is grounded in truth and accountability, unburdened by the noise of self-serving rhetoric. The future of our nation demands leaders who prioritize integrity and responsibility over personal ambition.”

PoliticsA Critique Of Ambassador Tuggar's Accusations Against Governor Bala Mohammed by Orabi(op): 7:27pm On Feb 05, 2025
By Suleiman Abbah

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar's recent attack on Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, accusing the Governor of fomenting a North-South divide through his criticism of President Bola Tinubu's tax reform bills, warrants a thorough critique. While constructive criticism of government policies is crucial in a democracy, Tuggar's framing of Governor Mohammed's actions as deliberately divisive requires careful examination, especially considering Tuggar's own position as a Northern elite figure who, arguably, has betrayed the interests of his region.

Tuggar's assertion that Governor Mohammed's criticism is solely aimed at inciting conflict ignores the legitimate concerns many Nigerians, including those from the North, have regarding the potential impact of the tax reform bills. To dismiss such concerns as mere attempts to create division is dismissive and arguably disingenuous. It suggests a lack of willingness to engage with valid critiques of government policies and an unwillingness to acknowledge potential flaws within the proposed reforms. Further, Tuggar's framing conveniently sidesteps the broader issue of equitable distribution of resources and the long-standing grievances concerning the perceived marginalization of certain regions within the Nigerian federation. By focusing solely on the perceived divisive nature of the criticism, Tuggar deflects attention from the underlying concerns driving Governor Mohammed’s stance. This is particularly concerning when considering Tuggar’s own position within the Northern political elite.

His actions, in silencing dissenting voices, betray a worrying trend amongst those in power who prioritize the preservation of their position over the genuine needs and concerns of their constituents. His supposed loyalty to the Tinubu administration appears to prioritize political expediency over regional solidarity and good governance.

The claim of Governor Bala Mohammed's non-performance is easily refuted by examining the tangible improvements in Bauchi State’s infrastructure during his tenure. The substantial investments in transportation, health, and education showcase a proactive and focused development strategy. The completion of over 286.7 kilometers of roads across the state – encompassing major projects like the dualization of Awalah – Gidan Mai – Miri and the extensive network of roads connecting rural communities in Azare, Jama'are, Misau, and Ningi – constitutes a remarkable achievement. These improvements directly address long-standing infrastructural deficiencies, significantly enhancing accessibility, stimulating economic activity, and reducing transportation costs for both urban and rural populations. The positive impacts on agricultural output and market access are particularly noteworthy.

Similarly, the education sector has witnessed a comprehensive overhaul. The collaboration with the Universal Basic Education Commission and NEI+, leading to the construction of 238 and renovation of 406 primary and secondary schools, demonstrates a firm commitment to improving the learning environment for Bauchi's children. This large-scale project, ranging from the refurbishment of existing institutions to the construction of new schools like the Northeast Model School, significantly enhances the quality of education available across the state. Furthermore, the administration's commitment extends beyond infrastructure; initiatives such as teacher training and the improved monitoring of school attendance indicate a holistic approach to educational reform.

The health sector has also seen substantial progress. The renovation of multiple general hospitals and primary healthcare centers, coupled with the construction of new facilities and provision of ambulances, improves healthcare access, especially in remote areas. The enrollment of vulnerable populations into healthcare insurance schemes and the training of health workers reflects a strategic approach to enhancing healthcare delivery. The proactive response to the COVID-19 pandemic through the establishment of isolation centers and provision of funds further underscores the administration's commitment to public health.

Beyond these three core sectors, the administration’s efforts extend to economic empowerment, security, agriculture, water supply, and housing, demonstrating a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to state development. The Kaura Economic Empowerment Programme and partnerships with private investors highlight a commitment to sustainable development. Investments in water infrastructure and efforts to enhance security through the provision of vehicles to security agencies and engagement with local vigilantes reflect a broad focus on citizen well-being.

In conclusion, Ambassador Tuggar’s accusations against Governor Bala Mohammed are not only unsubstantiated but also reveal a troubling disengagement from the realities on the ground in Bauchi State. The tangible achievements in infrastructure, across various sectors, demonstrate a clear commitment to improving the lives of Bauchi's citizens, directly contradicting the implied claim of non-performance.

Tuggar’s attack is better understood as a politically motivated attempt to silence dissenting voices and further underscores the dangerous trend of Northern elites prioritizing their own political agendas over the legitimate concerns of the people they represent. The focus should shift from the manufactured controversy to a deeper engagement with the critical issues raised by Governor Mohammed, and a genuine assessment of the true needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people.
PoliticsNorthern Coalition Condemns Arrest Of Usman Yusuf, Demands His Release, Warns Ag by Orabi(op): 6:54pm On Jan 30, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), have strongly condemned the arrest and continued detention of Prof. Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

CNG, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, described Yusuf as a fearless critic of the current administration who has consistently spoken out against corruption and poor governance.

Prof. Yusuf has, in recent times, emerged as one of the most vocal critics of the current administration, fearlessly exposing the failings of its policies and calling for good governance, transparency, and accountability. His arrest, therefore, is not only a blatant act of political persecution but also a clear attempt to intimidate opposition and suppress free speech.

Charanchi said: “ While the CNG recognises that the EFCC or any agency has the mandate to invite or arrest any person suspected of wrongdoing, it rejects politically orchestrated silencing of people that are critical to the government whereas many corrupt people are being shielded and pampered by the same government.

He said: “The CNG finds it deeply troubling that an administration that once thrived on opposition politics and enjoyed the freedom to criticize previous governments is now resorting to draconian measures to stifle democratic engagement. Such acts of political suppression set a dangerous precedent and threaten the very foundations of Nigeria’s democracy.

“We cannot afford to regress into an era where dissent is criminalized and opposition voices are forcefully silenced through harassment, intimidation and arbitrary arrest.

“The CNG demands the immediate and unconditional release of Prof. Yusuf. We urge the government to focus on addressing the pressing challenges facing the nation, rather than expending energy on silencing critics. Democracy thrives on dialogue, debate, and the free exchange of ideas, not on the suppression of dissenting voices.

“We also call on the Tinubu administration to uphold democratic principles by allowing a free and open space for constructive criticism and alternative views. If the government continues on this path of repression, it will only fuel greater resistance and deepen the growing mistrust between the leadership and the people.

“The CNG calls on civil society organizations, the media, and the international community to take note of this dangerous trend and hold the government accountable for its actions that are deployed to destroy Nigeria’s democratic successes.”

The coalition call on the Tinubu administration to uphold democratic principles by allowing a free and open space for constructive criticism and alternative views, adding that, “If the government continues on this path of repression, it will only fuel greater resistance and deepen the growing mistrust between the leadership and the people.”

CNG also urged civil society organizations, the media, and the international community to monitor the situation and hold the government accountable.
PoliticsNorthern Elders Forum Faults Arrest Of Prof Usman Yusuf, Demands His Release by Orabi(op): 6:19pm On Jan 30, 2025
The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has strongly condemned the arrest of Professor Usman Yusuf, calling it a politically motivated attempt to suppress dissent and silence opposition voices.

They also recall that Professor Yusuf, a renowned Hematology-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant specialist and former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), was arrested on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, at his Abuja residence by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Reacting to the arrest in a statement, on Thursday, the Spokesperson of NEF, Prof. Abubakar Jika Jiddere, noted that Prof Yusuf was arraigned before a Federal High Court in the FCT on Thursday, January 30, 2025, but the case was adjourned to February 3, 2025.

Jiddere decried the arrest, labeling it a calculated move to intimidate opposition figures and suppress democratic voices.
He is a Professor of Hematology-Oncology and Bone-marrow transplant.

He said: “The Northern Elders Forum received the news of the arbitrary arrest of Professor Usman Yusuf on Wednesday 29th January 2025 around 4:30 pm at his residence in Abuja by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Professor Usman Yusuf is a distinguished personality with high level credibility and unquestionable integrity.

“He is a Professor of Hematology-Oncology and Bone-marrow transplant. He was arraigned before a Federal High Court FCT presided by Justice Chinyere E. Nwecheonwu today Thursday 30th January, 2025. However, it was rescheduled for February 3th, 2025.

“The Northern Elders Forum is hereby calling for his release, as it sees his arrest as purely politically motivated to suppress and oppress popular democratic voices that openly challenge the poor public policies and bad governance being imposed on the people by this administration.”

It is a deliberate plan to silence and intimidate the political opposition and to reverse many of the democratic rights won by Nigerians over the years in the fight against dictatorship and all forms of inhuman oppressions.
PoliticsWike's History Of Political Betrayals Raises Doubts About Ability To Serve Pres by Orabi(op): 10:09am On Jan 28, 2025
By Suleiman Abbah

Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, represents a fascinating yet troubling case study in the realm of Nigerian politics. His journey through the ranks of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been marked by notable achievements, yet his recent actions have ignited serious concerns about his loyalty and reliability as a leader.

Wike’s ascent within the PDP has been nothing short of remarkable. Emerging from relatively humble beginnings, he utilized the party’s resources and platform to cultivate a significant political career. His tenure as governor of Rivers State solidified his influence, positioning him as a formidable player within the party. However, the very system that nurtured his rise now finds itself under threat from his actions, which reflect a transactional approach to politics. This shift raises critical questions about the nature of political loyalty and the ethical responsibilities of leadership.

Wike’s recent behavior, characterized by aggressive media confrontations and calculated political alliances, suggests a profound disregard for the principles of loyalty and gratitude. His public disputes with former allies, including a notable feud with his former mentor, Rotimi Amaechi, exemplify a willingness to sever ties for perceived political gain. Such actions not only reflect a lack of loyalty but also highlight a broader trend in Nigerian politics, where personal ambition often eclipses collective goals and shared ideologies.

The 2023 presidential elections further illuminated Wike’s opportunistic nature. Despite being a prominent figure within the PDP, he openly supported the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This decision, viewed by many as a blatant betrayal of his party, raises significant doubts about his commitment to the principles that once guided his political career. Such actions cast a long shadow on his credibility, suggesting that personal ambition takes precedence over party loyalty and ideological alignment.

Wike’s recent criticisms of fellow PDP member Governor Bala Mohammed further exemplify this trend. The statement issued by Wike’s spokesperson, which included personal attacks and unfounded claims, underscores a troubling pattern of behavior. Rather than engaging in constructive political dialogue, Wike resorts to inflammatory rhetoric and character assassination, undermining the very fabric of political camaraderie. This tactic, familiar to observers of his career, serves only to exacerbate divisions within the party and contribute to the toxic political environment that has become all too common in Nigeria.

The "non-swimmer" analogy employed by Wike’s spokesperson in reference to Governor Mohammed is emblematic of the condescending tone that pervades much of Nigerian political discourse. This patronizing language not only lacks substance but also detracts from the potential for meaningful engagement. By focusing on personal attacks rather than objective assessments of leadership, Wike’s approach reinforces a culture of animosity that hinders the possibility of constructive dialogue and problem-solving.

Moreover, the accusations leveled against Governor Mohammed—specifically, the claim of "political greed" in holding the chairmanship of the PDP Governors’ Forum—lack the necessary substantiation. The assertion that the position should rotate between North and South is not grounded in any formal PDP rule, rendering it a subjective critique rather than a reasoned argument. This reliance on pejorative language substitutes genuine discourse for a more toxic, adversarial approach to politics.

The appointment of Nyesom Wike as FCT Minister carries significant implications for the governance of Nigeria’s capital. The Federal Capital Territory is not only a symbol of national unity but also a critical hub for effective governance. It requires a leader capable of fostering cooperation and collaboration, rather than one known for divisive tactics and opportunistic maneuvering. Wike’s history suggests that his political agenda may take precedence over the needs of FCT residents, potentially jeopardizing crucial development initiatives and undermining the stability of the Tinubu administration.

Central to the concerns surrounding Wike’s appointment is the question of his loyalty to President Tinubu. His past actions indicate a self-serving political calculus, raising the possibility that his current alignment with the APC may be temporary. Given Wike’s history of shifting allegiances, there is a legitimate fear that he may betray the Tinubu administration if he perceives a more advantageous opportunity elsewhere. Such unpredictability could destabilize the administration, creating internal conflicts that hinder effective governance at a critical juncture for the nation.

While Wike’s experience as a governor may lend him some administrative insight, it does not mitigate the concerns about his character and political reliability. His track record, marked by betrayals and personal attacks, presents a significant red flag for those advocating for effective governance and national unity. The potential benefits of his experience are overshadowed by the risks associated with his unpredictable behavior.

In contrast, the political career of Senator Bala Mohammed exemplifies a different approach—one rooted in public service and collaboration. Mohammed’s commitment to fostering unity within the PDP and his ability to engage in constructive political discourse highlight the potential for effective leadership built upon integrity and a long-term vision. This distinction underscores the importance of choosing leaders who prioritize collective goals over personal ambition.

Wike’s political journey serves as a cautionary tale for aspiring leaders in Nigeria. His willingness to "bite the hand that feeds him" emphasizes the dangers inherent in a purely transactional approach to politics. While ambition is undoubtedly a necessary ingredient for political success, it must be tempered by loyalty, principle, and a commitment to the collective good. Wike’s actions starkly contrast with the more responsible and collaborative approach exemplified by Senator Mohammed, reinforcing the importance of integrity in effective political leadership.

Nyesom Wike’s history of political betrayals raises serious doubts about his ability to serve effectively as FCT Minister under President Tinubu. His transactional approach to politics, characterized by opportunism and personal attacks, threatens to undermine the stability and effectiveness of governance in Nigeria’s capital. While his administrative experience may offer short-term advantages, the long-term risks associated with his unpredictable behavior far outweigh any perceived benefits. Wike’s appointment ultimately serves as a reminder of the challenges inherent in Nigerian politics and the potential for short-sighted decision-making to hinder progress and stability. As Nigeria navigates its complex political landscape, the need for leaders who embody loyalty, integrity, and a commitment to the collective good has never been more critical.
PoliticsNorthern Coalition Lauds Security Forces, Calls For Sustained Superior Power Aga by Orabi(op): 3:22pm On Jan 26, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has called for continued and intensified efforts in the fight against terrorism and banditry across Nigeria.

The group called on governments, security agencies, and community leaders to prioritize long-term strategies aimed at restoring peace and stability.

In a statement, the National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, emphasized the importance of long-term strategies by governments, security agencies, and community leaders to restore peace and stability in affected regions.

The coalition also lauds the heroic efforts of Nigerian security forces for their recent successes in the ongoing fight against bandits and terrorists, which have brought significant relief to many communities across the North.

Charanchi highlighted the successes of Operation Fansan Yamma, applauding the armed forces for their unwavering commitment to restoring security.

He praised recent victories, such as the neutralization of fighters loyal to bandit leader Bello Turji, including his second-in-command and key commanders in the Northwest, and also acknowledged the elimination of Boko Haram commander Abu Iklima in Bama, Borno State.

Charanchi said: “The CNG calls for sustaining the momentum through all-fronts onslaught to ensure the total eradication of banditry and terrorism in all parts of the country.

“It is imperative that the operations extend to the hideouts of these criminals, weakening and decimating them and preventing their resurgence and attacking capabilities and possibilities.

“We urge the military and other security agencies to sustain and intensify their offensive operations as they demonstrated their unmatched and patriotic strength by taking the fight directly to the strongholds of these criminals and ensure that they are completely dismantled and unable to regroup.

“The Coalition also extols the Service Chiefs and sister agencies as well as the Minister of Defence for their leadership to the frontline troops and availing them with the necessary resources to prosecute the operations gallantly.”

He called for enhanced collaboration between federal and state governments and improved coordination among security agencies, and also stressed that better synergy and intelligence-sharing would optimize resources and enhance the effectiveness of counter-terrorism efforts.

The CNG also calls for greater synergy between the federal and state governments, as well as improved coordination and cooperation among all security agencies that will optimize resources, enhance intelligence-sharing, and ensure a comprehensive approach to eradicating terrorism and banditry.

Furthermore, we appeal to all Nigerians to support these efforts by providing timely, credible information and actionable intelligence to security forces to support the ongoing and future operations. The fight against terror and criminality is a collective responsibility, and actionable intelligence from citizens can play a pivotal role in tracking and neutralizing the remnants of these monstrous elements that deserve permanent abode in the deepest part of hell.

The CNG further calls on Nigerians as a people known for their faith and total submission to Almighty God to intensify prayers for divine intervention to crown the efforts of our troops with resound and sustainable successes against agents of darkness that instill unnecessary fright and anxiety in the minds of people. We believe that with God’s guidance and the dedication of our security forces, the country will overcome the current security challenges and emerge stronger and more prosperous.

We pray that God would embolden our courageous troops as they confront these monstrous threats to our nation.

We remain steadfast in our support for the security forces and call on all well meaning Nigerians and other stakeholders to continue being supportive for a peaceful, secure, and prosperous North and Nigeria.
PoliticsCustoms Agents Throw Weight Behind Chief Solademi Abdulmajid For ANLCA Chairmans by Orabi(op): 2:35pm On Jan 24, 2025
The Association of Nigerian Licensed Customs Agents (ANLCA), Abuja Chapter, has expressed overwhelming support for Chief Solademi Abdulmajid as he vies for the chairmanship.

The chapter reaffirmed its commitment to a rotational leadership system, emphasizing the importance of honoring a gentleman's agreement to shift the chairmanship to the Southwest.

The endorsement was made in Abuja, at the official flag-off of Abdulmajid’s campaign. Speaking at the event, the founding father of ANLCA, Alhaji Prince Badmos Ayo, expressed confidence in Abdulmajid's leadership potential, predicting a positive transformation under his administration.

Ayo said: “If the foundation is not good, it is rotting, then the best thing is to demolish the foundation and build another one. We cannot even count because when we talk about our GDP, after oil, revenue from the oil industry, the next revenue is from customs. And we, the agents, are the movers and shakers of the revenue.

“So, I can say that we contributed a lot to the revenue generation of this country through the clearing of cargo from the customs-bonded warehouses.”

Speaking at the event, stakeholders praised Abdulmajid as a man of integrity, capable of leading the association toward equity, fairness, and justice. Many attendees emphasized his years of dedication to ANLCA and his leadership qualities.

In his speech, Abdulmajid outlined his vision for ANLCA, promising to lead with integrity, inclusiveness, and innovation. He pledged to prioritize transparency, accountability, and the welfare of members.

He said: “I offer myself to serve as your chairman and promise to lead ANLCA into a future driven by commitment, unity, and a shared purpose. My administration will be based on integrity, resilience, and inclusive governance.”

He called on members to join hands with him to transform ANLCA and achieve excellence.

He expressed profound gratitude to Almighty Allah and to everyone present to witness the rise of renewed hope in ANLCA and the flag-off campaign of his candidacy as the next elected chairman of ANLCA Abuja Airport chapter.

He assured stakeholders of his commitment to advancing the chapter's goals and welfare while maintaining a foundation of equity and justice.

He promised to run an open administration based on a foundation of integrity, resilience, inclusive governance, and an unwavering passion and support for membership growth through innovation and embracing emerging technologies as an enabler to strengthen practitioners at the Chapter for the benefit of all.

He said: “I am not desperate to be the (ANLCA) Chairman, but desperate to see the system working again effectively, for the growth of the Association and ensuring transparency, and accountability.
I will invest in our people, our processes and our technology, to secure and drive our businesses effectively.

“I will also create more opportunities for youth and members to participate in decision-making processes, receive training and mentorship programs.
I will lead with integrity, to revive our policy welfare of our members in (ANLCA) Abuja Chapter, setting benchmarks, and meeting them as our core values.

“As your Chairman, I pledge to work tirelessly, with the Nigerian Customs Service, other Government agencies and every stakeholder at the cargo warehouse, to ensure smooth and seamless business operations at the Abuja Chapter.

“I believe in dialogue to enhance our organizational agility and responsiveness to foster a culture of collaboration, empathy, respect, embed sustainability and social responsibilities to drive the Association forward.”

On his part, the immediate past chairman, Alh. Abdulrahir Abdulsalam, described Abdulmajid as a man of integrity, a person you can trust.

He said: “This election is all about being fair, equitable, and just to all sections of the country. He has been our member over the years. The young man in question, Sholademi Abdulmajid, is from the southwest. That is why the majority of stakeholders, 90% of them, endorse him as their preferred candidate for this election.

“So, that is why I throw my weight behind him. He's a personal friend. We have had a relationship over the years. So, he has the ability and capacity to deliver as chairman of ANLCA Abuja Airport. So, all that is required of a chairman, he already has it.”

Addressing concerns about regional representation, Abdulsalam stressed the need to respect existing agreements.

He added, “We have one other contestant who is from North Central. That is why, for me, I can't support him because we have a gentleman's agreement that we should shift the chairmanship to the southwest.

“So, for any reasonable member here who is fair to himself, we all agree that it is the turn of the southwest to have chairmanship for two tenures. Because our tenure for the chairman is three years, while it’s four years for the president of the association.

“So, therefore, for the next six years, we believe the southwest should be the saddle of leadership here. That is why you see that the majority of us from the north who are practicing throw our weight behind him. Yes, the other candidate is from the north, but we're not supporting him because we want to alter the agreement we have. We don't do that.”

PoliticsNorthern Coalition Rejects Telecom 50% Tariff Hike, Demands Resignation Of NCC B by Orabi(op): 11:47pm On Jan 22, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), has rejected the recent 50% hike in telecommunications tariffs approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), describing it as an assault on the already strained livelihoods of Nigerians.

The coalition emphasized that the tariff increase, introduced amidst widespread economic hardship marked by hyperinflation, unemployment, and poverty, demonstrates a lack of consideration for the plight of the average Nigerian.

In a statement, the National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, condemned the decision, calling it an act of insensitivity and economic injustice.

The coalition called on Nigerians, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to resist the tariff hike and demand its reversal.

Charanchi said: “The CNG totally and unequivocally rejects the recent astronomical 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs in the country as sanctioned by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

“The CNG avers that this decision, coming at a time when Nigerians are reeling in immense economic hardship, is nothing short of an assault on the dignity and livelihoods of the people that have been economically pauperized.

“We are appalled by the insensitivity and lack of foresight demonstrated by the NCC and the Federal Ministry of Communications in approving such an exorbitant tariff hike.

“The CNG observes that at a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling to make ends meet due to hyper-inflation, rising unemployment, and the pervasive effects of economic mismanagement, this decision is utterly indefensible.

“The NCC and the Ministry leadership have proven to protect their personal interests and have become insensitive to the plight of Nigerians. Therefore, we call for the resignation or immediate dismissal of the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC and the Minister of Communications for their failure to prioritize the welfare of Nigerian citizens over corporate and personal interests.”

The CNG vowed to take all necessary legal steps to protect the rights and welfare of Nigerians.

The group argued that the assertion that the decision followed "extensive consultations" with stakeholders is complete misrepresentation of reality as certainly the millions of struggling telecom consumers were not part of the consultation.

The coalition opined that in the modern age telecommunication services are not a luxury but are a necessity for survival and economic participation in the global digital world.

He added, “Approving this hike, we contend, the NCC has jeopardized access to communication, education, healthcare, and commerce for the average Nigerian and further expanded the frontiers of the digital divide in the country.

“We therefore call for the immediate suspension of the 50% hike in the tariffs and recommend instead a more reasonable adjustment of a maximum of 10%, which balances industry sustainability with the current economic realities in Nigeria.

“We also demand that the NCC engage in genuine, inclusive consultations with consumer advocacy groups, civil society organizations, and other grassroots stakeholders before implementing any tariff adjustments.”

The CNG reiterated its commitment to advocating for fair and equitable policies, urging Nigerians to unite against exploitative decisions and support measures that prioritize public welfare over corporate profits.

The federal government must recognize that any policy that worsens the economic hardship of the people is counterproductive and unsustainably dangerous to all as Nigerians are already being pushed to the extreme.

It is a fact that the telecommunications sector is pivotal to Nigeria’s digital economy, but its growth must not come at the expense of the people. It is imperative to adopt a balanced approach that fosters industry innovation and sustainability without alienating or impoverishing consumers.

The CNG calls on all Nigerians, civil society organizations, and stakeholders to stand firm against this exploitative decision and work collectively to demand its reversal and ensure only policies that uplift, rather than oppress, the people are condoned.

The CNG will not relent in advocating for the rights and welfare of all Nigerians and will take every necessary step within the confines of the law to resist this unfair tariff raise.

PoliticsCoalition Of Northern Women, Csos Women Wing Advocates For Gender-sensitive Tax by Orabi(op): 7:53pm On Jan 21, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) Women Wing, in collaboration with civil society organizations (CSOs), has advocated for gender-sensitive Tax Policies.

These necessitate the Coalition of Northern Groups Women wing to organize a town hall meeting in Kano state, being the Economic Capital of North, to inform as well as record the views of women on the current tax reform.

They disclosed this during a stakeholders town hall meeting at Mumbayya House, Kano State, themed “The Position of Nigerian Women on the Controversial Tax Reform Bills,” focused on the implications of the proposed tax reforms, particularly for women in Northern Nigeria.

The Coalition of Northern Groups women wing is willing to put a lot of work into making sure that Northern Nigeria's interests and opinions were taken into consideration. While meticulously highlighting how the proposed reforms could be refined to better meet the needs of all stakeholders.

In a statement, the National Women Leader of the Coalition of Northern Groups Women Wing, Pamela Nankling Nanle, said that the Key Concerns of Nigerian Women Regarding the Tax Bill: Impact on Women in the Informal Sector, Many women in Nigeria work in the informal sector, such as street trading, domestic work, and small-scale businesses.

These sectors are often under-taxed, but the proposed tax reforms could introduce stricter regulations, making it more difficult for women to sustain their livelihoods.

She said: “Increased taxes on micro and small businesses could displace women entrepreneurs who are already struggling due to inadequate support and resources.
Economic Dependency and Financial Inequality:

“Many Nigerian women already face challenges regarding economic dependency, with limited access to credit, loans, and financial services. A tax hike could make it even more difficult for women to access capital for business ventures or personal development.
Women in rural areas and informal economies may be particularly vulnerable to indirect taxes on goods and services, which could raise the cost of essential items such as food, healthcare, and education.

“Impact on Social Services: Nigerian women, especially those in rural or impoverished areas, rely on social services, including healthcare and education, to improve their quality of life. If the tax bill leads to budget cuts in these sectors, it could undermine the services that many women depend on.

“Any reduction in government funding for women-centric programs, such as maternal health services and educational scholarships for girls, would further entrench gender disparities.”

She calls for Gender-Sensitive Tax Reforms: Inclusion of Women’s Voices in Tax Policy Discussions: Women’s groups and activists have called for more inclusive and gender-sensitive tax reforms.

Adding that, “The need for gender representation in tax policy development is paramount to ensure that policies are not just equitable but also account for women’s unique socio-economic challenges.

“Civil society organizations have stressed the importance of conducting gender audits before implementing major reforms to assess the potential impact on women, especially those from marginalized communities.

“Support for Women Entrepreneurs:
Advocacy for tax exemptions or reduced tax rates for women-owned businesses, especially those in the informal sector, has gained momentum. This would help support women entrepreneurs by easing the financial burden and allowing them to reinvest in their businesses.

“Additionally, promoting women’s access to financial literacy programs, micro-credit, and business development support can help mitigate the adverse effects of tax changes on women-led businesses.

“Improved Social Welfare Programs:
Nigerian women are calling for tax policies that enhance social safety nets, such as unemployment benefits, healthcare, and childcare services. These programs are seen as critical for women who are disproportionately responsible for caregiving and household management.
Expanding social welfare programs could help counteract the negative impacts of regressive taxes and ensure that women, particularly single mothers, are not pushed further into poverty.”

She also acknowled the recent development that is the acceptance of the presidential Tax Committee to revise the VAT sharing formula as suggested by Nigerian Governors Forum. Notwithstanding the following recommendations were made.

“The Federal Government should halt the proposed VAT increases and instead reduce the current VAT rate to 3%. This reduction will provide relief to citizens and businesses while encouraging economic activity. Alternative revenue-generating strategies must be explored to avoid placing additional financial pressure on ordinary Nigerians.

“Total Overhaul of the Tax Reform Bill:
The reforms must undergo thorough consultation with all regions and key stakeholders, including civil society organizations, educational institutions, and local governments, to ensure a consensus-driven and equitable approach.
Increased Tax Burden: it was argued that the proposed national fiscal policy may lead to an increased tax burden on citizens, particularly those in lower-income brackets. If not carefully calibrated, these changes could exacerbate existing inequalities and hinder economic mobility. Especially as Nigerians are still grappling with the dual effect of subsidy removal and unification of the exchange rates, which have made the prices of goods and services rise in a disproportionate manner that has never been experienced in the country.

“Taxation in the midst of poverty: If you say that it is corporate organizations that will pay higher taxes and not individuals, where will you be when the companies will increase the prices of their goods and services factoring VAT? Do you have a price control mechanism?. All these will further result in higher income inequality.

“Clear Definitions of Key Terms in the Tax Reform Bill: The tax reform bill contains ambiguous terms that need clarification to avoid misinterpretation. For instance, a precise definition of “derivation” must be provided to ensure equitable resource allocation. The term “family wealth” must be clearly defined to prevent undue taxation on family assets or inheritance.

“These recommendations aim to ensure fairness, transparency, and inclusivity in Nigeria’s economic and governance frameworks, while prioritizing the well-being and interests of all citizens, especially those in Northern Nigeria.
Conclusion:

“The Tax reform bill aims to restructure our nation's fiscal system, promising increased revenue for infrastructure, social programs and National development, However, while its intention may be noble, we, must scrutinize its potential impact on marginalized groups especially women in Northern Nigeria.

“For women, these reforms must provide a pathway to economic empowerment, fostering greater financial independence and entrepreneurial growth as citizens and important stakeholders. It requires our collective effort to ensure that the reforms deliver on their promises, particularly for women who have long been excluded from the benefits of Nigeria’s economic growth.

“As we leave this conference, let us commit to championing policies that empower women through equitable tax systems. Together, we can build a Nigeria where every woman, regardless of her socioeconomic status, has the opportunity to thrive.”

PoliticsNorthern Coalition Of Northern Groups Condemns Borno, Zamfara Killing, Urge Imme by Orabi(op): 8:54pm On Jan 16, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), on Thursday, condemned recent attacks in Borno and Zamfara states, describing it as “senseless acts of violence” that have devastated families and communities across Northern Nigeria.

The group emphasized the need for a review of security procedures to prevent future mistakes and mitigate the risks to innocent lives in counter-terrorism efforts.

National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchu, decried the killing of 40 farmers in Borno State by suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Kukawa Local Government Area.

The group extended condolences to the affected families and state governments, calling the tragedies both devastating and avoidable.

Charanchu said: “Borno State, the heinous killing of 40 farmers by suspected members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Kukawa Local Government Area near Daban Leda is yet another grim reminder of the persistent threat posed by extremist elements Boko Haram.

“This senseless act of violence has deprived families of their loved ones, communities of their breadwinners, and our nation of hardworking citizens striving to sustain their livelihoods.

“Similarly, in Zamfara State, the accidental killing of 16 civilians during an airstrike at Tungar Kara, where members of a local vigilance group were mistakenly identified as fleeing bandits from Gidan Makera in the Boko district of Zurmi Local Government Area, is a tragic and regrettable occurrence.

“This unfortunate incident stresses the urgent need for a comprehensive review of operational procedures to prevent further collateral damage in the fight against insecurity.

“The CNG hereby stand in solidarity with the affected families and communities, sharing in their grief and praying for the repose of the souls of the departed. We urge the governments of Borno and Zamfara States to provide immediate support and succor to the families of the victims.

“We call on the Federal Government to launch a thorough and transparent investigation to ascertain the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. While the CNG calls for those found culpable for lapses to be held accountable, measures must be put in place to avoid a recurrence.”

CNG also noted that the recent events highlight the urgent need for the Federal Government and security operatives to redouble efforts to eliminate the remnants of terrorist groups and bandits operating in Borno, Zamfara, and other affected states.

He added, “This must include sustained intelligence gathering, robust community engagement, and the deployment of modern technology to ensure precision in security operations. Security agencies must foster stronger partnerships with local communities and vigilante groups to enhance operational effectiveness and reduce the risk of misidentification.”

The CNG also reminded President Bola Tinubu that the responsibility for these challenges lies with his administration and that the verdict of the Nigerian people will be passed in 2027.

The group prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the deceased and for the strength of their families to endure these irreparable losses.
PoliticsNorthern Student Coalition Urges FG To Halt VAT Increase, Rejects Tax Reform Bil by Orabi(op): 2:46pm On Jan 14, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) Students’ Wing in Yobe State, has called on the Federal Government to halt the proposed Value Added Tax (VAT) increase and instead reduce the current rate to 3%.

The coalition unanimously rejected the proposed Tax Reform Bills, citing their lack of inclusivity and potential adverse effects on various regions and sectors.

In a statement signed by Coordinator of the CNG Students’ Wing, Comrade Adamu Ibrahim Galadima, the coalition underscored that reducing VAT would provide much-needed economic relief and foster business growth, especially in light of the challenges posed by subsidy removal and exchange rate unification.

The appeal was made during a town hall meeting at Federal University, Damaturu, focused on the implications of the Tax Reform Bills on Nigerians, particularly students, theme “Reform Bills: A Catalyst for Economic Growth or a Burden on the People,” the event gathered over 97 youth and student groups.

The coalition called on the Federal Government to withdraw the bills and adopt a more inclusive and people-centered approach to reforms.

Galadima said: “The Federal Government should halt the proposed VAT increases and instead reduce the current VAT rate to 3%. This reduction will provide relief to citizens and businesses while encouraging economic activity. Alternative revenue-generating strategies must be explored to avoid placing additional financial pressure on ordinary Nigerians.

“The proposed tax reform bill is unanimously rejected due to its lack of inclusivity and potential negative impact on various regions and sectors. The reforms must undergo thorough consultation with all regions and key stakeholders, including civil society organizations, educational institutions, and local governments, to ensure a consensus-driven and equitable approach.

“These recommendations aim to ensure fairness, transparency, and inclusivity in Nigeria’s economic and governance frameworks, while prioritizing the well-being and interests of all citizens, especially those in Northern Nigeria.”

They stressed the need for thorough consultations with stakeholders, including civil society organizations, educational institutions, and local governments, to ensure fairness and equity in the reform process.

The group also urged lawmakers to reject the bills, highlighting that they had been overwhelmingly opposed by constituents.

The coalition further condemned any plans to defund or restructure agencies such as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).

According to the group, these institutions are crucial for advancing education, technology, and industrial development in Nigeria.

The coalition also urged lawmakers to prioritize the interests of their constituents by rejecting the bills and advocating for a fair tax system that promotes national unity and balanced development.

He added, “The Nigerian Tax Reform Bill is more than just a piece of legislative proposal, it is a statement of our collective ambitions for a prosperous and equitable future.

“The National Assembly is advised to halt deliberations on the bill and engage in more consultations to ensure the reform promotes National unity and balanced development. There is the need for a fair tax system that ensures no region is marginalized in the pursuit of economic growth.

“The notion of tax is not new to any of us, it is the price we pay for living in a civilized society. However, the framework within which we gather and utilize these resources is what determines whether tax becomes a catalyst for economic growth or a burden.

“Reforms that are successful usually have a few traits in common. These traits include extensive discussions with experts and other, a clear communication plan that explains the reforms, inclusive and suitable design frameworks, and well-organized procedures to guarantee the reforms achieve the intended results. These crucial components don't seem to be present in the Federal Government of Nigeria's recently proposed tax reform bills.

“The proposed Tax Reform Bills have faced opposition from various stakeholders, including the National Economic Council, the Northern Governors' Forum, South East Caucus of the Senate, Religious leaders, NGOs, CSOs, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and many more. Their primary concern revolves around the proposed amendment to the Value Added Tax (VAT) distribution formula, defunding of NITDA, TETFUND and NASENI.

“The bills lack a clear definition of some key terms such as ‘derivation, family wealth, ecclesiastic’. The current system allocates VAT revenue based on the location of the company's headquarters and tax office, rather than where the goods and services are consumed.

“In addition to the VAT distribution criteria, other concerns raised include the potential negative impact of the tax reforms on the region's economy, education, digital innovation and the well-being of its people. It was argued that the reforms could lead to increased tax burdens on businesses and individuals, hindering economic growth and development. The opposition to the tax reform bills has led to calls for broader consultations and consensus-building among stakeholders.

“These necessitate the Coalition of Northern Groups students’ wing to organize town hall meetings to inform as well as record the views of our Youth and students on the current tax reform.

“The Coalition of Northern Groups Students wing is willing to put a lot of work into making sure that Northern Nigeria's interests and opinions were taken into consideration. While meticulously highlighting how the proposed reforms could be refined to better meet the needs of all stakeholders.”
PoliticsCNG Commends Senator Ndume For Opposing Proposed Tax Reform Bills, Vows To Mobil by Orabi(op): 1:08pm On Jan 13, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), vowed to mobilize against those supporting the proposed Tax Reform Bills, reaffirming its steadfast backing of Senator Ali Ndume for his courageous opposition to the controversial legislation.

The coalition noted that it is engaging citizens across Northern Nigeria through town hall meetings to raise awareness about the potential consequences of the bills.

In a statement issued after a courtesy visit to Senator Ndume, CNG National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, commended the senator's bold stance and pledged the group's continued backing in opposing the controversial bills.

Charanchi explained that the visit was an opportunity to strategize on effective ways to oppose the reforms.

The CNG warned that lawmakers who abandon their constituents would be treated as the enemies of the people whose political relevance must be decisively and immediately destroyed and buried.

He said the goal is to empower constituents to reach out to their representatives and demand that they reject the proposed reforms. "We will continue to utilize all available democratic tools to ensure these bills, which threaten the livelihood of millions, are rejected outright.”

The CNG also used the occasion to call on Northern lawmakers to remain true to their constituents and reject the Bills, which appear to be ill-timed and serve as a tool to fulfill external demands, such as those from the World Bank.

According to the coalition, some legislators from the North have chicken out while others are scrambling for crumbs from the presidency which could lead them supporting the unpopular bills for their personal aggrandizement as God-forsaken and evil-spirited political bandits.

He said: “We want to categorically warn any lawmaker from the North who supports these oppressive Tax Reform Bills: your betrayal will not go unnoticed. You simply sign to enslave the people who entrusted you with their mandate. CNG will practically lead campaigns against such betrayers who should be completely eliminated from the political landscape of northern Nigeria.

“Northern lawmakers must remember that they are in the National Assembly to serve the interests of their constituents, not to rubber-stamp policies dictated by external forces like the World Bank or any ethnic supremacist. Stand with the people, or face the consequences of their rejection.”

According to the leading political pressure group, any lawmakers that discards the interests of his people through supporting the bills would be treated as dangerous outcasts that deserve our collective censure and opprobrium.

The CNG added such despicable, mischievous and reckless rascality from legislators particularly those from the North is an all-out affront to the collective interest and dignity of the regions that we are determined to go any length to preserve and jealously guarded.

The group stressed that this is not the time for policies that could further cripple the already struggling economy and increase the burden on Nigerians.

“Any senator from the region who supports these bills is betraying the trust of their people. We urge our lawmakers to critically assess the implications of these reforms and prioritize the interests of the common people over foreign influence or personal gains.”

The CNG charges members of the house of representatives to make sure that the bills not only do not pass the second reading but also, they are unanimously rejected and abandoned in the lower chamber.

CNG reiterated its commitment to holding public officials accountable and ensuring that the voices of the people are heard. The coalition vowed to intensify its advocacy until the proposed Bills are completely rejected or outrightly withdrawn.

Senator Ndume commended the CNG for its proactive role as a vibrant political pressure group dedicated to protecting the interests of the common people.

He assured the delegation of his unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of his constituents in the National Assembly, pledging to act without fear or favor.
PoliticsSoyombo, Nigeria Customs Boss And Us by Orabi(op): 9:43pm On Jan 11, 2025
By Samuel Akinwale

Fisayo Soyombo, founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), took on the Nigeria Customs Service, determined to expose the institution’s hidden truths and blurred lines.

Despite being threatened with hefty lawsuits, Soyombo stood firm, armed with video, images, and recordings.

When the first lawsuit letter arrived, his lawyers swiftly responded within three hours, requesting a court meeting with Ibrahim Dende and his team. However, in a shocking turn of events, Dende withdrew the case, Suit Number CV/2286/2024, against Soyombo. This sudden withdrawal implies that the allegations made by Soyombo were factual, leaving many Nigerians stunned.

It is worth noting that Soyombo, a renowned investigative journalist, has a history of taking on tough cases. He's known for his fearless approach, having gone undercover to expose corruption in Nigeria's justice system

Soyombo’s investigations allege a relationship between Adeniyi and IBD Dende, an alleged smuggler with a reputation for trafficking rice and turkey.

Interestingly, Adeniyi has been actively working to combat corruption within the Service. He recently met with the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to discuss strategies for mitigating corruption. However, these efforts may be overshadowed by the allegations surrounding his appointment.

The situation highlights the need for transparency and accountability in Nigeria's institutions. As the country continues to grapple with corruption, it's essential to ensure that those in positions of power are free from undue influence and are working in the best interests of the nation.

Southwestern Nigeria's most notorious smuggler wasn't just invited to the Customs Officers Wives Association's 'relaunch' event in Abuja - they were a major donor! This isn't a bad dream, it happened in the Nigeria Customs. It's a stark reminder of George Orwell's Animal Farm, where the lines between right and wrong are hopelessly blurred. Under the current comptroller-general’s leadership, it seems reality has become a real-life Animal Farm

A viral video by investigative journalist, Fikayo Soyombo surfaced sometime last year, allegedly showing Dende mentioning Adeniyi, the current Comptroller-General of Customs while accusing customs officers of allowing his trailers carrying smuggled rice into Nigeria.

In the video, Dende is seen threatening to kill a customs officer for stopping his smuggled rice and is heard ordering someone to "Call Wale, call Wale" - with 'Wale' referring to Adeniyi, a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). This shocking revelation raises serious concerns about corruption and collusion within the customs service.

The Nigerian Customs Service has responded to allegations surrounding Comptroller General of Customs Adeniyi, stating that the altercation in question stemmed from the seizure of allegedly smuggled goods.

However, many Nigerians remain skeptical, as there has been no update on the investigation into claims that Adeniyi's trailers of rice were allowed into the country while those of Ibrahim Dende Egungbohun were refused.

The Customs spokesperson acknowledged the severity of the allegations against Adeniyi but failed to provide any information on the prosecution of Dende or the outcome of the investigation. Interestingly, it has come to light that Dende and Adeniyi have a long-standing friendship that predates Adeniyi's appointment as Comptroller General of Customs.

This raises questions about potential conflicts of interest and the integrity of the customs service under Adeniyi's leadership. As the Comptroller General of Customs, Adeniyi has been instrumental in promoting data analytics and innovation within the service. However, the lack of transparency surrounding this allegation threatens to undermine his efforts and erode public trust in the institution.

Since the withdrawal of the suit against Fikayo Soyombo, Nigerians have been waiting to hear from relevant Nigerian authorities but the waiting may be endless.

PoliticsNorthern Group Criticizes Tinubu's Sunday Dare Over Remarks On Governor Mohammed by Orabi(op): 5:23pm On Jan 11, 2025
The North-East Unity Forum (NEUF), a prominent non-governmental organization, on Saturday, faulted Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications to President Bola Tinubu, over his recent remarks about Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed.

The NEUF expressed its disapproval of Dare’s article titled “Governor Bala Mohammed Playing Irresponsible Politics: An Expression of Crass Irrationality and Utmost Insensitivity by a Nosediving Government.”

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Comrade Yusuf Umar, the group described Dare’s remarks as misplaced, arguing that the President’s aide should focus on the widespread struggles of Nigerians instead of attacking Governor Mohammed for addressing the pressing issues affecting ordinary citizens.

He said: “We at the North-East Unity Forum (NEUF) have read the statements made by Sunday Dare, the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications to the President.

“It is unfortunate that the spokesperson, who should be concerned about the realities of the majority of Nigerians’ suffering, has instead chosen to berate Governor Bala Mohammed for speaking the truth about the plight of the masses.

“This pedigree and record of accomplishments position Governor Mohammed to speak authoritatively on issues of public concern, particularly on policies like the controversial Tax Reform Bill, which the Governor has rightly criticized for its potential harm to Northern Nigeria and the nation at large.”

The group highlighted Governor Bala Mohammed’s extensive public service record, emphasizing his nearly 30 years of experience, including roles as Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and now as a second-term governor of Bauchi State.

NEUF dismissed Dare’s criticisms as baseless, stating that he lacked the qualifications, exposure, and understanding of the realities facing ordinary Nigerians. “Dare, who has failed in previous roles and now occupies his position by accident, lacks the grasp of real issues affecting the people. In his attempt to defend his daily bread, he has waded into sensitive matters without understanding their implications.”

The forum accused Dare of defending what it termed “the malicious policies of the Tinubu administration,” which it claimed were empowering a select few while impoverishing the majority of Nigerians.

He added, “Governor Mohammed has spoken the minds of the masses in Northern Nigeria, highlighting the need for the insensitive government of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to recognize that under his leadership, Nigerians are dying of hunger and illnesses caused by harsh and unworkable policies. The average Northerner is living in fear, hunger, and trauma due to these policies.

“2027 is just around the corner, and youth coalitions will work tirelessly to ensure President Tinubu does not return for a second term. This government has been adjudged the worst since the inception of democracy in Nigeria, thanks to its unrealistic and inhumane policies.

“The masses of Bauchi State are pleased with their Governor, who has created policies that promote egalitarianism and development. Dare should focus on fixing the damage caused by his principal and avoid meddling in issues he does not understand.”

The group concluded by urging Dare to focus on advising the President to withdraw harsh economic policies and address the suffering of Nigerians rather than commenting on issues in Bauchi State, a region they claim he knows little about.

PoliticsCNG Gombe, Csos Reject Tax Reform Bills, Demand Inclusive Policies by Orabi(op): 5:45pm On Jan 07, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) Gombe State Chapter, in collaboration with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and other key stakeholders, has rejected the Tax Reform Bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu.

The group urged lawmakers, particularly those representing Northern Nigeria, to oppose the reforms and called for broader consultations to develop inclusive and sustainable economic policies.

In a statement issued after a townhall meeting held at Gombe State University, Comrade Muhammed Usman Deba, Coordinator of CNG Gombe State; Comrade Habiba Isah Gaude, representing Voice for Rural Women; and Comrade Lawal Idris Lawantee, Acting Chairman of CSOs, outlined their key concerns and recommendations.

The meeting, themed “Tax Reform Bills: A Catalyst for Economic Growth or a Burden on the People?”, brought together policymakers, academics, civil society leaders, youth groups, and concerned citizens to examine the implications of the proposed tax reform bills.

The group emphasized its strong opposition to the proposed reforms, citing their potential to exacerbate socioeconomic challenges, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

The group strongly opposed the proposed reforms, citing their potential to exacerbate socioeconomic challenges, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

The group noted that the proposed Tax Reform Bills have faced significant opposition from various stakeholders, including the National Economic Council, the Northern Governors' Forum, and other prominent groups. A major concern is the proposed amendment to the Value Added Tax (VAT) distribution formula. Under the current system, VAT revenue is allocated based on the location of a company’s headquarters and tax office, rather than where the goods and services are consumed.

Statement read in past: “The Federal Government should halt the proposed VAT increases and instead reduce the current VAT rate to 3%. This reduction will provide relief to citizens and businesses while encouraging economic activity. Alternative revenue-generating strategies must be explored to avoid placing additional financial pressure on ordinary Nigerians.

“Any attempt by telecommunications companies to increase tariffs will be firmly opposed. The government and regulatory authorities must ensure that telecommunications remain affordable for all Nigerians, given its critical role in economic and social connectivity.

“Total Rejection of the Tax Reform Bill:
The proposed tax reform bill is unanimously rejected due to its lack of inclusivity and potential negative impact on various regions and sectors. The reforms must undergo thorough consultation with all regions and key stakeholders, including civil society organizations, educational institutions, and local governments, to ensure a consensus-driven and equitable approach.”

The group unanimously rejected the Tax Reform Bills, describing them as lacking inclusivity and potentially harmful to various regions and sectors.

They called for the immediate withdrawal of the proposed reforms, urging the Federal Government to adopt a people-centered approach to economic policies.

The group observed that the reforms appear to disproportionately target Northern Nigeria, raising suspicions about their intent. The region, already lagging in economic development, would bear a significant share of the economic burden, further marginalizing its population.

They added, “The Federal Government should halt the proposed VAT increases and instead reduce the current VAT rate to 3%.

The reforms must undergo thorough consultation with all regions and key stakeholders, including civil society organizations, educational institutions, and local governments, to ensure a consensus-driven and equitable approach.

“Agencies such as TETFUND, NITDA, and NASENI are essential for Nigeria’s educational, technological, and industrial advancement. The town hall demands an immediate halt to any plans to defund or restructure these institutions.

“Their funding and mandates should be strengthened to enhance their capacity to address critical challenges, including research, innovation, and capacity building, which are vital for sustainable national development. Additionally, the proposed NELFund must be discontinued as it risks indebting future generations with unsustainable revolving credit schemes.

“The tax reform bill contains ambiguous terms that need clarification to avoid misinterpretation. For instance, a precise definition of “derivation” must be provided to ensure equitable resource allocation. The term “family wealth” must be clearly defined to prevent undue taxation on family assets or inheritance.

“These recommendations aim to ensure fairness, transparency, and inclusivity in Nigeria’s economic and governance frameworks, while prioritizing the well-being and interests of all citizens, especially those in Northern Nigeria.”

In addition to the VAT distribution criteria, other concerns raised include the potential negative impact of the tax reforms on the region's economy, education, digital innovation and the well-being of its people. It was argued that the reforms could lead to increased tax burdens on businesses and individuals, hindering economic growth and development. The opposition to the tax reform bills has led to calls for broader consultations and consensus-building among stakeholders.

The townhall therefore concluded even within the government there was not consensus and consultations on the bills which is why, by failure to reverse the decision, it was considered that either the president lacks human feelings or he is determined to his seat to promote his personal / business at the expense of the lives of the populace.

Almost unanimously, the speakers and participants rejected the tax reform bills, emphasizing that they do not reflect the realities of the people and could increase poverty, unemployment, weaken our educational institution and economic hardship. The townhall called for the immediate withdrawal of the proposed bills and urged the Federal Government to adopt a more inclusive and people-centered approach to economic reforms. It also called on all lawmakers from the North to turn down the bill that is apparently rejected by their constituents.

At the townhall meeting, the following key deliberations and observations were made regarding the proposed tax reform bills:
The participants observed that the proposed tax reform bills, far from being catalysts for economic growth, would increase the existing economic challenges facing the North and Nigeria as a whole. The reforms are likely to deepen poverty, increase unemployment, and stifle local businesses already grappling with economic hardship.

The townhall meeting noted with great concern the provisions in the bills that propose the defunding of pivotal national institutions such as the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI). These institutions are critical to education, innovation, and technological advancement, particularly in Northern Nigeria, and their defunding would undermine regional and national development.

It was observed that the reforms appear to disproportionately target Northern Nigeria, raising suspicions about their intent. The region, already lagging in economic development, would bear a significant share of the economic burden, further marginalizing its population.

The participants criticized the lack of meaningful consultation and engagement with stakeholders, particularly those from Northern Nigeria, during the formulation of the bills. This exclusion has resulted in policies that fail to reflect the realities and needs of the majority of Nigerians.

The participants warned that the implementation of such reforms could fuel discontent and add to social tensions, particularly in the North, where citizens are already facing severe economic and security challenges.

The overwhelming majority of participants unequivocally rejected the tax reform bills, viewing them as a direct assault on the economic and social well-being of Nigerians, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

The townhall meeting emphasized the need for alternative reforms that are inclusive, equitable, and designed to stimulate sustainable economic growth without imposing undue hardship on citizens.

These deliberations underscore the collective sentiment that the proposed tax reform bills, in their current form, are detrimental to the people and the nation at large.
PoliticsOhanaeze Crisis Deepens As Ozobu Committee Announces New PG, Others NEC Members by Orabi(op): 12:57pm On Jan 07, 2025
The Prince Dr. Richard Ozobu-led Ohanaeze Ndigbo 2025 Election Committee, has announced Dr. Jackson Omenazu from Rivers State as the President General, alongside other members of the National Executive Council (NEC) of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization.

In a statement signed by Ozobu and the Committee Secretary, Prof. Chibuikeya Achokawa, revealed that the new leadership emerged unopposed.

According to the statement, Dr. Jackson Omenazu from Rivers State was elected as President General, with Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro from Abia State as Deputy President General. Other NEC members include:

Other members of the NEC are: Engr Abbas Chinedu, Secretary General, Chief Chinenyeze Thompson Ohia, National PRO/Spokesman, Ambassador Kingsley C. Ekwenye, National Vice President General (Anambra), Chief Dr Alexander Chikalue Okemiri, National Vice President General (Ebonyi), Barr Sylvester Nwogu, National Vice president General (Imo) and Prof Iheanacho Agboti, National Legal adviser.

In his acceptance speech obtained by our correspondent, Omenazu vowed to resist attempt by desperate politicians to hijack the Igbo body.

While noting that his emergence was in accordance with the 2004 Ohanaeze Constitution, he stressed that “It is the rightful turn of indigenous Igbo of Rivers State to occupy the position of Ohanaeze President General.

"This is a historical event as all injustices meted against the indigenous Igbo of Rivers State have been reversed. We have recovered our Igbo National identity, as a bona fide indigene of Igbo of Rivers State has emerged as the newly elected President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo since the end of the Biafra war 55 years ago.

“Igbos in Rivers State are fully blooded Igbo; this is the end of identity crisis and the politics of convenience regarding our Igbo identity.”

He went further, “Today marks a pivotal moment in the history of our great organization and the Igbo people as a whole. It is a day of profound significance, not just for myself as your newly elected President General, but also for the countless voices that have long been subdued and marginalized.

“I stand before you not merely as a leader but as a custodian of our shared heritage, a torchbearer for our collective aspirations, and a champion for our indomitable spirit.

“The cornerstone of this historic election is the affirmation of our rightful place within the narrative of the Igbo people. The selection of an indigenous Igbo from Rivers State as President General is not merely a token representation.

“It is a bold declaration that we have reclaimed our identity and rectified the historical injustices that have plagued us for generations. It is an emphatic statement that we are not defined by the politics of convenience but by our rich legacy and unwavering commitment to our roots.

“As we navigate the complexities of the present, we must resolutely reject the attempts by desperate politicians to harness Ohanaeze for their narrow personal ambitions.

“The era of using our revered organization as a pawn in the political chess game is over. Ohanaeze Ndigbo is reaffirmed as the apex socio-cultural organization representing the entirety of the Igbo people, our focus shall pivot decisively toward issues that directly benefit our communities and enhance our collective progress.

“Let me make it abundantly clear: while we welcome collaboration with our governors as Imeobi members, we will not become subservient to their interests. Ohanaeze shall be funded by Igbo sons and daughters around the world, ensuring that we remain resolute in our mission to defend and promote the interests of the Igbo populace against the deceptions of political elites.

“Our immediate agenda, as the newly elected executive council, features a multi-faceted approach aimed at addressing the critical issues plaguing the Southeast. Chief among these is the urgent need to tackle insecurity—this will require concerted efforts alongside our friends and allies. We firmly stand for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, whose plight has become emblematic of our quest for justice and self-determination.

“We urge the government to recognize the importance of incorporating ethnicity and religion in the forthcoming 2025 census. Such representations are essential to rectifying historical misrepresentations and ensuring that our voices are heard in the administrative frameworks that govern our lives.

“Moreover, we demand the demilitarization of the Southeast and the dismantling of unnecessary checkpoints that stifle movement and engender fear. Our homeland must be a sanctuary of peace, where the sanctity of life is upheld and the dignity of our people respected.

“We assertively declare that the restructuring of Nigeria is vital for unlocking the latent potentials of our diverse geopolitical regions. In line with this, we call for the revision of the 1999 Constitution to aptly reflect the aspirations and identities of all Nigerian ethnic groups.

“In pursuit of progress, we will vigorously advocate for the creation of additional new states within Igboland. This initiative is not merely about administrative boundaries; it represents a deeper quest for representation, acknowledgment, and empowerment for our people.

“Let it be known that we are committed to establishing the AKU RUO ULO INDUSTRIAL BUSINESS HUB, a pivotal initiative aimed at fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and investment in Igbo land. This clarion call for the “Think Home Philosophy” speaks to our dedication to nurturing our local economy, stimulating growth, and ensuring that our people thrive in a sustainable environment.

“Furthermore, I extend a message to President Tinubu: Engage with us to open the Eastern Economic corridors. It is imperative that we prioritize the dredging of Calabar Seaport, the development of the Azumiri Deep Blue Sea Port, and the comprehensive reconstruction of the Aba-Maiduguri railway lines. We must also include interstate railway infrastructure linking critical sub-stations from Abakaliki to Owerri, Awka, and Onitsha.

“I accept the monumental challenge before us to reposition Igboland to meet the expectations of millions of Igbos worldwide. This administration embraces collaboration with all stakeholders, including former contestants, reflecting a commitment to a unified vision for the restoration of confidence in Ohanaeze Ndigbo—an organization grounded in the history, aspirations, and resilience of our people.

“Together, let us forge a path of progress, embrace our identity boldly, and embark on this journey toward a brighter future for the Igbo nation, unmarred by past grievances but inspired by the promise of unity, strength, and unprecedented achievement.”

Despite the announcement, the crisis within Ohanaeze is set to deepen. Another election committee, led by Chief Ejiofor Onyia, is slated to conduct an election on January 10, 2025. This parallel process threatens to further factionalize the organization, mirroring the discord of the past four years.

As the crisis unfolds, the future of Ohanaeze Ndigbo hangs in the balance, with leadership unity pivotal to addressing the pressing challenges faced by the Igbo people.
PoliticsTax Reform Bills: Northern Elders Calls For Dialogue, Inclusive Policies by Orabi(op): 7:21pm On Jan 04, 2025
The Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), has raised concerns over the Federal Government’s proposed Tax Reform Bills, urging immediate suspension of their implementation and calling for extensive dialogue with stakeholders.

The forum criticized the government for failing to engage critical stakeholders and experts before drafting the reforms.

NEF expressed its position in a statement signed by its Chairman of Management Board, A.M. Al-Amin Daggash, highlighting the reforms' potential adverse effects on Northern Nigeria and the nation as a whole.

Daggash said: “To begin with, contrary to the desperate attempt by the Lagos/Ibadan axis of the media, to glibly frame the robust and animating discourse still gaining nationwide currency, on the proposed Tax Reform Bills, by focusing it on the concave and myopic lenses of North-South dichotomy, truth be told.

“The salient contributions that are coming from a broad section of Nigerians, from all the six geo - political zones, have so far, ably succeeded in deepening, enriching and modifying the proposed Tax Reform Bills, well ahead of so many necessary amendments, to be legislated by the National Assembly.

“It is terribly shocking, that, in this time and age, with nearly three decades of unbroken experimentation of democratic governance, our dear country (Nigeria), will be so sadly saddled with a government that is working assiduously, to deny its citizens, the vigorous ventilation of democratic opinions and freedom of expression.

“Since coming into office, the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has brazenly operated with a total contempt and sardonic disdain for any patriotic voice of dissent and a palpable proclivity for emasculating its imaginary opponents.

“Nowhere is this more abundantly evident, than in the undemocratic way the government is openly arm-twisting the critical public to the sheepish acceptance of and the slavish submission to the highly toxic proposal it hurriedly packaged and euphemistically tagged, as, Tax Reform Bills.

“Once again, it is necessary to reiterate, that indeed, Nigerians in general and Northerners in particular, are not really against the introduction of any form of good and meaningful reforms by those in positions of authority, at the federal, state or local government levels.

“Even though, we shall remain very implacable in reaffirming that, our practical experiences teaches us, that, going by global best practice, successful reforms are known to be underpinned by strict adherence to certain common cardinal characteristics of the public policy-making process.

“For convenience of exposition, these similarities include, but, not limited to the under listed basic essentials: Extensive pre-reforms early engagements with experts and critical stakeholders, in order to secure their buy-in

“Establishing a very well-defined media/communication strategy, that clearly articulates the full import of the reforms and disseminates public awareness and mass enlightenment on a nationwide scale.

“Designing a robust, transparent and inclusive implementation mechanism. Pro-actively putting in place a well-sequenced process, in order to ensure that the meticulously planned reforms, really meet the society's desired and anticipated outcomes.

“The Northern Elders' Forum, make bold to say, that, the recently proposed Tax Reform Bills by the Federal Government, were clearly in the breach, with regards to adhering to the above listed common characteristics of reforms and public policy-making process, all over the world and in conformity with the global best practice.”

NEF accused the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of suppressing dissenting voices and forcing compliance with what it described as “draconian” tax policies.

The Forum emphasized that patriotic voices should not be silenced in a democratic society.

NEF added, “The Federal Government should immediately suspend the rush to implement the proposed Tax Reform Bills, so as to more wisely use the medium of dialogue to allay all concerns, collect all quality contributions and critical inputs from cross sections of Nigerian stakeholders, and then finally proceed to accommodate and redesign the sequencing of the implementation strategy.

“As a consumption tax which drastically reduces the purchasing power of citizens, fuels inflation and hikes in interest rates, no increase in VAT should be imposed, pending the emergence into the national horizon, of clear evidence of the promised economic recovery by the government.

“The proposed formula contained in the NTAB is not fair to the states where VAT revenue is generated, as the consuming states are denied credit for what has been generated from them. Since VAT is a General Consumption Tax (GCT), the rule of attribution based on the location of consumption should be uniformly applied.

“Since Section 162(2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) grants the RMAFC, the sole authority to determine the formula for equitable revenue sharing among the three tiers of government, no attempt should be made by the ruling authority, to whimsically change this provision, as doing so, is capable of undermining the law of the land and disrespect of democratic principles.

“The plan to move the exceedingly performing developmental and technological institutions, with a secured means of sustainability, such as, TETFund, NITDA and NASENI, to the uncertain and hazardous future of budgetary allocation should be halted. We strongly recommend that the status quo should be maintained by the government, so as to strengthen and protect these strategic national institutions.

“That, given our diversity and the importance the government attaches to promoting financial inclusion, the use of contentious terms like "ecclesiastical," in the original proposed Tax Reform Bills, should be seamlessly replaced with "religious."

“That, religious, charitable organizations and family inheritance wealth, should be exempted from paying all forms of taxes, as this is prone to conflicts over citizens' strict adherence to some religious obligatory laws.”

NEF urged the Federal Government to focus on fostering trust through dialogue and transparency, ensuring that the reforms benefit all Nigerians equitably.

According to NEF, “These glaring failures, coupled with many gross inadequacies associated with the proposed Tax Reform Bills as being packaged by the Federal Government, are clearly what necessitated the timely setting up of a Committee of Experts on the field, by the Northern Elders' Forum, which also proceeded to task and charge the Committee, to thoroughly study and conduct a data-driven analysis on it.

“The Committee was equally mandated to create adequate rooms for some in-depth discussions and critical evaluation of the proposed Bills, so as to successfully arrive at a very far reaching conclusion and provide actionable recommendations.

“The Forum, is hereby exceedingly glad to lay bare, the full details of the essential findings and the concomitant recommendations that we intend to transmit to the Federal Government and the wider Nigerian public, as a token of our valued inputs and patriotic contributions towards achieving a more effective, equitable, transparent, just and justifiable Tax Administration in our beloved country.

“First and foremost, it should be noted, that comprehensively, the proposed Tax Reform Bills, are made up of four (4) separate but not very separable, fiscal and financial components. These are as follow; Nigeria Tax Bill. Nigeria Tax Administration Bill. Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill. Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Bill.

“Ostensibly, these are part of a broader Economic Stabilization Initiatives, aimed at enhancing tax collection efficiency and boosts government revenue generation. But, they have since generated very intense controversy, characterized by polarized sentiments gripping various stakeholders across the nation, especially regarding their perceived negative consequences on Northern Nigeria.

“Taking into context and against the background of the prevailing crippling conditions of Northern Nigeria, which today struggles with wide spread challenges ranging from the distinctive scourges of insecurity, abject poverty, high percentage of joblessness, particularly among the ranks of restive youth and alarming rise in criminal activities. The sudden and abrupt introduction of these obvious draconian Tax Reforms Bills by the Federal government, would certainly exacerbate rather than alleviate the unbearable existing harsh economic realities being faced by the poor and vulnerable people in Northern Nigeria.

“The leadership of Northern Elders' Forum, holds the firm view, that, government's interests will best be served, promoted and promoted by actively engaging in comprehensive dialogue with varied and critical stakeholders, in order to foster a very admirable legislative outcomes that will respect the rights of all citizens and promote their individual and collective wellbeing, while at the same time, ensuring the attainment of a balanced approach to taxation that prioritizes national unity, progress and economic development.”
PoliticsCoalition Of Northern Groups Condemns Presidency Threat To Gov. Bala Mohammed by Orabi(op): 9:18am On Jan 02, 2025
The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG), strongly condemned the recent threats issued by the Presidency against Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, following his remarks on the proposed tax reform bills currently under consideration at the National Assembly.

The CNG criticized the response from the Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication to President Bola Tinubu, Sunday Dare, describing it as unjust and dismissive.

In a statement, the National Coordinator of CNG, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, emphasized that Governor Mohammed’s remarks were made in good faith within a democratic framework and represented the legitimate concerns of his constituents.

Charanchi said: “We find it significant to remind all and sundry that Governor Mohammed's comments were completely acceptable and constructive in a democratic system that encourages dialogic conversations which he made in the spirit of advocating for the welfare of Bauchi State and the broader Northern region within the Nigerian political milieu.

“His statement, ‘We will show President Tinubu our true color,’ was a call for sincere and constructive dialogue with the Federal Government, not a threat.

“Governor Mohammed's remarks echo the frustrations and concerns of countless Nigerians who believe that the Tax Reforms must not be implemented in a manner that is unjust, divisive and deliberately skewed to favour a few states over the majority.

“Regrettably, instead of heeding the Governor's wise counsel and constructive criticism that has been already echoed by vast majority of Nigerians, the Presidency snarled in response like an untamed beast at the heels of a fleeting traveler simply because of their unwillingness to swallow the pill of a bitter truth. Thus, the CNG seizes this opportunity to remind President Tinubu that his administration has, in less than two years, inflicted severe economic hardship on the populace.

“His anti-people policies, such as the removal of fuel subsidies, have led to a significant increase in fuel prices, triggering a ripple effect on transportation costs and the prices of goods. Additionally, the hike in electricity tariffs has compounded the difficulties faced by many Nigerians, making President Tinubu the foremost promoter of abject poverty across the nation.

“The CNG wishes to highlight that President Tinubu's disastrous economic policies have led to severe inflation and currency devaluation, causing significant financial hardship for Nigerians. Ongoing issues with insurgency, banditry, and communal conflicts continue to jeopardize national security and stability. The government's inability to tackle these problems has left many Nigerians living in constant fear.”

The group urged President Tinubu to prioritize addressing the country’s economic and security challenges instead of resorting to personal attacks and dismissive rhetoric.

He added, “On a global scale, President Tinubu has been identified as one of the most corrupt individuals by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP). This should prompt the Presidency to address its own failings before accusing others of corruption. Despite numerous allegations against President Tinubu, there have been no substantial efforts to combat corrupt practices within his administration.

“The CNG stands resolutely behind Governor Mohammed on this issue of tax reform and his unwavering dedication to advocating for the needs and interests of his people, exercising his constitutional freedom. For any democracy to thrive, open and honest dialogue is essential for achieving meaningful progress and fostering national cohesion.

“We assert that if the Presidency harbors no ulterior motives in response to constructive criticism, it should engage with Governor Mohammed and other leaders in a manner that promotes mutual understanding and collaboration to refine the bills for the betterment of the Nigerian people.

“As an elected leader, Governor Mohammed's duty is to proactively voice the concerns of his people, especially when federal policies appear detrimental to their welfare. His comments should be viewed as part of his statesmanship, as he seeks to protect the interests of his state and the Northern region as a whole.”

Charanchi concluded by urging the Federal Government to engage with Governor Mohammed and other Northern leaders constructively, instead of resorting to personal attacks or dismissive rhetoric.

He emphasized that as an elected leader, Governor Mohammed’s duty is to voice the concerns of his people, especially when federal policies appear detrimental to their welfare.
PoliticsNorthern Council Backs Governor Bala On Tax Reform Bills, Urges Tinubu To Avoid by Orabi(op): 2:26pm On Jan 01, 2025
The Leadership of the North Central Citizens Council (NCCC), on Wednesday, declared its support for Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed amidst the ongoing debate on the Tax Reform Bills.

The group expressed solidarity with Governor Mohammed's call for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to withdraw the controversial bill, warning that the North might be compelled to “show its true color" if their concerns are ignored.

NCCC Coordinator, Comrade Mohammed Eneji, in a statement, emphasized that the Governor's remarks reflected the sentiments of the average northerner, particularly in the North Central region, which has been disproportionately affected by the administration’s economic policies.

The counsel urged the presidency to view Governor Mohammed’s comments as a constructive warning rather than a threat, emphasizing that frustration among citizens is rising due to harsh economic conditions.

Eneji said: “We hereby show our solidarity and support to His Excellency , Governor Bala from the North Central Zone. These tax reforms are anti-people. The government cannot continue to borrow with nothing to show. This is the position of our council.

“Governor Bala has the right to speak for his people as a Governor who forms a subnational under the Tinubu led government, as such deserves to be heard. Instead of Sunday Dare calling Governor Bala 's comments as a threat, the government should rather listen to the voice of reasoning which is the voice of the general North

“We from the North Central Zone advise the Presidency to heed to the warning of the Governor as frustration continues to mount of average citizens due to the current harsh economic situation, the North may be forced to withdraw their support from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu if policies such as the Tax Reform Bills which is directly targeted on further plunging the region into abject poverty and under development sees the light of the day. We are going to canvas the entire region starting from our zone against Tinubu in the next election if these kinds of shenanigans continue.

“This government has no empathy for the common man. These draconic policies will help the country as it will continue to enrich Lagos and other very few states, no state in the North Central stands a chance of benefiting from the proceeds of these bills, as such we are totally against the Tax Reform Bills.

“What the region are asking from the president are as follows: Provide us with adequate security for our farmers to assess their farmlands. This will boost agriculture and provide food for the citizens and for export.

“Revive the Ajaokuta Steel company to full capacity, develop other Solid mineral resources in the entire northern region. Open all our land borders so that the region can be open for business again. Develop all our sea and dry ports and so on.

“If all of the above is put into consideration, then the region may be ready to accept any form of reform about our tax system and the government will be seen as being just to all regions in Nigeria. Comrade Mohammed added.”
