The Iranian authorities are ramping up repression. They fear mass protests now more than ever. Since late June, 11 Iranian citizens - three in Tehran and eight in Isfahan - have been sentenced to death for taking part in mass anti-government protests in November 2019. Iranian journalist Ruhollah Zam, who was accused of fuelling anti-government protests through a popular Telegram channel in 2017, also received the death penalty during the same period. Also in June, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) shut down Iran's biggest anti-poverty NGO, the Imam Ali Society, and arrested its founding director, Sharmin Meymandi Nejad, citing "anti-Iran activities". The independent charity had attracted the regime's fury during last year's protests by criticising government officials for "calling the poverty-stricken demonstrators rioters and agents of the enemy". Why did Iranian authorities rapidly intensify their efforts to silence dissenting voices in the last few weeks? The short answer is "fear". Today, amid a devastating pandemic and crippling economic sanctions, the Iranian government is more concerned about the possible re-emergence of mass riots than ever before. Today, Iranian people are fed up with the government's totalitarian desire to control all aspects of their lives and its apparent inability to address pressing environmental threats, such as air pollution and drought. Moreover, they are extremely dissatisfied with its bungling response to the COVID-19 pandemic. But above all, many Iranians from all walks of life are experiencing unprecedented, crippling economic hardship as a result of the cumulative consequences of the US sanctions, the COVID-19 pandemic and the incompetence of the Iranian government. US President Donald Trump's 2018 decision to pull out of the Iran nuclear deal and embark on a "maximum pressure" policy devastated Iran's economy, which was already in dire straits due to chronic mismanagement and widespread corruption. Just over a year later, the coronavirus pandemic, and the consequent drop in global oil prices, inflicted a second deadly blow on the country's finances. Due to US sanctions, Iran's oil revenues dropped from over $60bn in 2018 to $9bn in 2019. As the Iranian leadership tried to compensate for its oil revenue losses with gains in other sectors, the pandemic struck the service sector - which makes up more than 40 percent of Iran's economy - and sped up the country's looming economic collapse. In the first half of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic already caused a 15 percent drop in Iran's GDP, and the country is expected to experience further losses in the second half of the year. Adding to these concerns, Iran's economy is experiencing another period of "stagflation", a combination of recession and high inflation. The Iranian leadership's short-term remedy for its economic woes has always been to print more money, which leads to higher inflation. Earlier this year, the Iranian rial plummeted against the US dollar to the currency's lowest value ever, with one US dollar being traded for 230,000 rials. Inflation, meanwhile, reached 40 percent in 2019 and is expected to rise further this year. Iranians have been protesting against increasing economic hardship since December 2017. Most recently in November last year, they took to the streets en masse to protest against an unexpected increase in gasoline prices. The government violently cracked down on the protests, killing up to 1,500 people and injuring many others. Since last year's violence, the worsening economic situation - and the unrest it may trigger - has been a primary source of concern for Iran's political elites. Most recently on June 27, Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Mousavi Khoeiniha, one of Iran's highest-ranking and most politically influential clerics, wrote an open letter to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei and warned him that "increasing inflation and declining incomes have created back-breaking problems for the people" which threaten the stability of the country and the future of the regime. To remedy this situation and prevent future unrest, the regime adopted a twinned strategy of offering basic material aid to the poor and intensifying oppression. In April, as the coronavirus pandemic exacerbated the country's existing economic and social woes and increased the likelihood of a new episode of nationwide unrest, the government created an ad hoc welfare central command station called the Imam Hassan Headquarters to provide Iran's poorest and most vulnerable with basic goods and "buy" their loyalty. The government, however, is well aware that such initiatives are akin to putting a band-aid on a bullet wound. Iran's parliamentary research centre has warned that as many as 57 million Iranians (out of a population of 82 million) may be pushed below the poverty line in 2020. The regime, whose income is already shrinking, cannot afford to provide sufficient aid to such a large section of the population for too long. This is why the government is also using a more effective and familiar tactic to prevent mass unrest: oppression. In June 2020, the state-appointed IRGC Brigadier General Hossein Nejat, one of Khamenei's most trusted officers, as the head of Sarallah headquarters. Sarallah is Tehran's most important security headquarters and is tasked with protecting government officials and institutions in the city against domestic threats such as riots, anti-government protests or coup attempts. General Nejat's appointment to this role indicates not only that the regime is gearing up for more anti-government protests, but also that it is preparing to crush any revolt with force. Prior to his appointment, Nejat made it clear that he views the urban poor as the most critical threat to the Iranian regime. In his analysis of the November 2019 uprising, for example, the general claimed that the West is using poor Iranians to topple Iran's government and described them as "illiterate people, who live in the outskirts [of major population centres] and [whose minds] are polluted in the cyberspace". And it is not only the forces directly tied to the Sarallah headquarters that are preparing for a battle with the urban poor. The IRGC has also started to prepare a volunteer paramilitary force of government loyalists, known as Basij, for a new round of unrest. According to my sources in the militia, the Guard has introduced new anti-riot tactics and scheduled extra propaganda sessions to convince Basij forces of the necessity of cracking down on civilian protests. Meanwhile, the IRGC propaganda machine is doing overtime and using social networks to pre-emptively brand any future protest movement as a Western attempt to topple the government. As they work to expand their support networks, the government's forces are also simultaneously dismantling any civil society organisation and movement that could provide support for protesters during future unrest, such as the anti-poverty NGO, Imam Ali Society. Another important element in IRGC's strategy to prevent future unrest is injecting fear into the population. This is why Iran's judiciary, which often acts as an arm of the IRGC, has sentenced youths involved in last year's protests to death. The message that was sent to the masses with these sentences was clear: There is no mercy, if you revolt, you will die. Today, Iran's security and political elites are clearly working overtime to prevent a new round of civic unrest. It is impossible to know whether they will succeed in sedating, and scaring, the Iranian masses enough to prevent another round of nationwide protests. One thing, however, is certain: in the hopes of maintaining order, the Iranian regime is becoming more authoritarian and repressive every passing day. https://www.aljazeera.com/indepth/opinion/iran-message-people-revolt-die-200713160012571.html?

Adult content can make it hard to maintain one’s manhood. So says new research which found a correlation between men watching porn — and men suffering from erectile dysfunction. “We found that there was a highly significant relationship between time spent watching porn and increasing difficulty with erectile function with a partner,” professor Gunter de Win, head researcher, said about his team’s work, which was presented this week at the annual European Association of Urology Congress — Europe’s biggest urological event. Researchers from Belgium, Denmark and the UK based their findings on 3,267 men’s answers to an 118-question online survey about their porn, masturbation and partnered sex habits. “We found that there was a big range of responses,” de Win said. “In our sample, men watch quite a lot of porn, on average around 70 minutes per week, normally for between 5 and 15 minutes per time, with obviously some watching very little and some watching much, much more.” Only two-thirds of respondents rated sex with a partner to be more stimulating than porn and nearly a quarter of those under 35 reported some amount of erectile dysfunction during partner sex — a larger percentage than de Win’s team anticipated. “This figure was higher than we expected. We found that there was a highly significant relationship between time spent watching porn and increasing difficulty with erectile function with a partner, as indicated by the erectile function and sexual health scores,” he said. Their findings, de Win acknowledged, are based on a questionnaire and not a clinical trial, but they prove that, without a doubt, “porn conditions the way we view sex.” In addition to complicating men’s ability to perform, porn also creates a slippery slope to more and more intense porn: Researchers found that 90% of men fast-forward to the most pornographic scenes and that, over time, 20% required increasingly extreme porn to maintain their arousal levels. “Our next step in this research is to identify which factors lead to erectile dysfunction, and to conduct a similar study on the effects of porn on women,” de Win said. “In the meantime, we believe that doctors dealing with erectile dysfunction should also be asking about watching pornography.” https://nypost.com/2020/07/17/men-who-watch-porn-more-likely-to-have-erectile-dysfunction-study/?

Windhoek city councillor alleges she was offered money by local politician to drop objections against tentative 5G deal. A city councillor in Namibia's capital has alleged she was offered a bribe by a local politician to ensure Chinese tech giant Huawei would win an exclusive contract to build the 5G telecommunication network in Windhoek. Brunhilde Cornelius made the allegations in an affidavit that was filed with police on June 19 and has been obtained by Al Jazeera's Investigative Unit. Cornelius, who is also the secretary-general of the opposition Rally for Democracy and Progress Party (RDP), alleged the bribe was offered by Nicanor Ndjoze, a fellow RDP member who is the party's director of elections. Ndjoze was allegedly working on behalf of his nephew, Reckliff Kandjiriomuini, otherwise known as "Minge", the head of the ICT division of the City of Windhoek (COW). The allegations come months after Namibia was rocked by several corruption scandals sparked by the so-called the Fishrot files, revelations that saw two government ministers - the former Minister of Justice Sacky Shanghala and the former Minister of Fisheries Bernhard Esau - resign after a joint investigation by Al Jazeera, WikiLeaks and Icelandic media. Shanghala and Esau have been in detention since late November 2019, pending trials for corruption, money laundering and fraud. Huawei's 5G network In the affidavit, Cornelius claims that Ndjoze referred to a 40 million NAD ($2.4m) slush fund available for potential beneficiaries of the deal that would give Huawei exclusive rights to develop the infrastructure for a 5G telecommunication network. Following her opposition earlier this year to the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the COW city council and Huawei, Cornelius claims she was offered 5-6 million NAD ($300,000 - $360,000) to drop her objections and allow the city council to approve the signing of the MoU. According to Cornelius, Ndjoze told her on May 12 she could receive the payment in exchange for dropping her opposition to signing the MoU with Huawei. Ndjoze allegedly told Cornelius the deal with Huawei was spearheaded by his nephew. Kandjiriomuini allegedly enlisted Ndjoze's help, knowing that he was a member of the same political party as Cornelius, to persuade her to accept the bribe and allow the MOU to be signed, according to Cornelius. There is no evidence Huawei has any knowledge of these events. Hidden recording Cornelius states in the affidavit that following Ndjoze's alleged offer, she reported the attempted bribery to the police, who equipped her with hidden recording devices for future meetings with Kandjiriomuini and Ndjoze. The affidavit explains how the following day, on May 20, Kandjiriomuini requested a meeting with Cornelius and Ndjoze. Picking her up from the COW municipality, Ndjoze drove Cornelius to a petrol station at the edge of town. En route, Ndjoze informed Cornelius that "local guys who we can trust" would set up a joint venture with Huawei. Cornelius describes how Ndjoze told her to "relax" and that she was in "good hands" after Cornelius let him know she was scared to participate in such a scheme given the backlash caused by Al Jazeera's Fishrot expose. Surveillance footage obtained exclusively by Al Jazeera confirms that Ndjoze arrived at the petrol station with Cornelius at 16:44 local time, about 10 minutes after Kandjiriomuini. Ndjoze and Kandjiriomuini are seen having a discussion outside the car, before Kandjiriomuini steps into Ndjoze's car, and they drive off. The three then headed to the discreet Eagle's Beer Garden on Windhoek's Avis Reservoir. Cornelius described Kandjiriomuini and Ndjoze as being cautious to avoid anyone observing their meeting. During the conversation, Kandjiriomuini told Cornelius everything they discussed should be treated confidentially, that he was the driving force behind the planned deal with Huawei, and that the deal would be "to the benefit of all of us". According to the affidavit, when Cornelius asked directly when she should expect to receive her money, Kandjiriomuini responded that it would come when the MoU was signed and the project began. Cornelius claimed the meeting with Ndjoze and Kandjiriomuini was covertly recorded using equipment hidden in her hat and undergarments as part of the investigation by the police. Al Jazeera was not able to independently verify the existence of the recording. Kandjiriomuini said in a written statement to Al Jazeera: "There is no evidence of any recording in which I informed Ms Cornelius of any individuals benefiting from the Huawei project" and claimed that Cornelius had reasons for misrepresenting the position. "I deny her false allegation." https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/07/exclusive-corruption-allegations-namibian-5g-deal-huawei-200715065812785.html? Cc lalasticlala |

The UK approves the phased removal of the Chinese telecoms giant from its 5G network despite warnings from Beijing. The United Kingdom has bowed to US pressure and approved the phased removal of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei from its 5G network despite warnings of retaliation from Beijing. Tuesday's policy reversal handed a significant victory to US President Donald Trump's administration in its geopolitical and trade battle with China. But it threatens to further damage the UK's relations with the Asian power and carries a big cost for UK mobile providers that have relied on Huawei equipment for nearly 20 years. Oliver Dowden, the UK's digital secretary, announced the move in Parliament on Tuesday after Prime Minister Boris Johnson chaired meetings with his Cabinet and the National Security Council. "From the end of this year, telecoms providers must not buy any 5G equipment from Huawei," he told MPs. The new guidelines also require all existing Huawei Huawei had been reportedly pushing for the full ban to be delayed till after the UK's next general election, scheduled to take place in 2024, that could potentially bring a new government to power with a more sympathetic approach. Huawei's reaction "This disappointing decision is bad news for anyone in the UK with a mobile phone. It threatens to move Britain into the digital slow lane, push up bills and deepen the digital divide. Instead of 'levelling up' the government is levelling down and we urge them to reconsider," Huawei said after the announcement of the ban. "Regrettably our future in the UK has become politicised, this is about US trade policy and not security." Johnson angered Trump and upset some members of his own Conservative party by allowing the Chinese 5G leader to help roll out the UK's speedy new data network in January. The UK was then completing its departure from the European Union and looking to establish strong ties with powerful Asian economies that could fulfil Johnson's vision of a "global Britain". But the Trump administration told the UK government that its decision imperilled intelligence sharing and could even result in the relocation of some US fighter jets from England. US stance Washington believes the private Chinese company could either spy for Beijing or shut down rival countries' 5G networks in times of war. Huawei has always denied this and pointed to 20 years of cooperation with British security agencies that checked on the safety of its existing 3G and 4G networks. The British review was triggered by new US sanctions in May that blocked Huawei's access to US chips and semiconductors at the heart of 5G networks. The restriction raised the possibility of Huawei having to switch from trusted US suppliers to alternatives whose safety could not be guaranteed by UK security agencies. https://www.aljazeera.com/ajimpact/uk-bans-china-huawei-5g-network-hands-big-win-200714120459624.html?

Iran has said the misalignment of an air defence unit's radar system was the key "human error" that led to the accidental downing of a Ukrainian passenger plane in January. "A failure occurred due to a human error in following the procedure" for aligning the radar, causing a "107-degree error" in the system, the Iranian Civil Aviation Organisation (CAO) said in a report late on Saturday. This error "initiated a hazard chain" that saw further errors committed in the minutes before the plane was shot down, said the CAO document, presented as a "factual report" and not as the final report on the accident investigation. Flight 752, a Ukraine International Airlines plane, was struck by two missiles and crashed shortly after taking off from Tehran's main airport on January 8, at a time of heightened US-Iranian tensions. Iran admitted several days later that its forces accidentally shot down the Kyiv-bound plane, killing all 176 people on board. 'Wrong identification' The CAO said despite the erroneous information available to the radar system operator on the aircraft's trajectory, he could have identified his target as an airliner, but instead, there was a "wrong identification". The report also noted that the first of the two missiles launched at the aircraft was fired by a defence unit operator who had acted "without receiving any response from the Coordination Centre" on which he depended. The second missile was fired 30 seconds later, "by observing the continuity of trajectory of the detected target", the report added. Tehran's air defences had been on high alert at the time the jet was shot down in case the US retaliated against Iranian strikes hours earlier on American troops stationed in Iraq. Those strikes were carried out in response to the killing of a top Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani, in a US drone attack near Baghdad airport. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020/07/iran-misaligned-radar-led-ukrainian-jet-downing-200712102324803.html?
