Politics / Re: Zainab's. Article On Boko Haram. A People In Terminal Decline. by Orisdude: 12:48pm On Feb 22, 2012
If the Nigerian President was a man of vision and purpose, he would realize that in this mess he has been handed a golden opportunity to unite Nigeria.
People of all stripes are quite ready to listen to the reality on ground, not to primordial religious or cultural sentiments.

Begin a tour of every part of Nigeria, accompanied with a solid economic blueprint that people see going into action immediately.
Destroy and level the tin gods of yesterday. Master the politics and go after every enemy of progress. Castrate them. Level them. For any person or bloc that will not repent, wipe them and their memory from the face of the earth. Begin to speak directly to the people, let them begin to hear, and then see, what you are saying and promising.
The Northern parts of Nigeria may not have voted for him en-mass but there was a substantial amount of votes, it doesn't even matter. You are President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and that makes every state your state and every local government and village your home.
Be vicious and implacable in bringing destruction down on Boko Haram and its sponsors; cultivate a new breed of leaders, political, cultural in the North and bring them to power.
Ensure that they mix up with everybody everywhere. Southern Nigeria does not have space for everybody and for every project- its one Nigeria, we should be able to live anywhere.
Let everyone see that you belong to all of us. Speak and act for every Nigerian.
Go after education like a laser beam. ASUU knows how to go on strike? No problem. You can meet their demands but you will come up with a set of yours- QUALITY, Hardwork, focus and real time doing, ASUU must decide that if they really want an upgrade they will have to upgrade their services. Give them ultimatums. Sack VCs- appoint proper administrators.
Security is not hard. There are well trained bureaucrats and technocrats who are focused on the job, who know what to do, who understand best practice, who do not understand politics and have no need to. Bring them to power and then protect them fiercely and relentlessly.
Go after men and women of vision. Slowly begin to develop a core of "can-do-people" who will become your inner circle. Sack and decapitate any political sycophant attached to you. You needed them for a time, now its up- expel them into never ending darkness. And from all tribes, divisions and walks of life, begin to appoint men and women who you can put pressure on to perform. They must perform or they will be disgraced.
Nigeria is not hard. What makes it hard is the lifestyle, the laziness and sheer indulgence that "take-it-for-granted" has bred.
Nigeria is not hard.

Truely, people do not know what they have.
Fashola, with all the nonsense he has to contend with, is moving Lagos forward bit by bit.

I think Lagosians are beginning to take the good they have for granted.
Have you been to Jos, Makurdi, Jalingo, Abeokuta etc?

Development takes time. And it costs something. Don't forget that the PDP central government in Abuja is not doing anything for Lagos.
Maybe some of you do not remember the Lagos of old.

Autos / The Trouble With Carfax Reports. by Orisdude: 1:59pm On Sep 17, 2011
THE TROUBLE WITH CARFAX
JANUARY 23RD, 2009 · BY LOUISGREEN · FILED UNDER: COMMENTARY · CONSUMER NEWS · MISCELLANEOUS

Most people purchasing used cars rely solely on Carfax to let them know whether or not the vehicle they are buying has been wrecked or has other serious problems.  That is understandable because Carfax has created the perception that if there is a problem with a vehicle, it’ll be on a Carfax report.  Car dealers, eager to make sales, are more than happy to perpetuate that perception.

As an attorney who handles automobile fraud cases, I have seen many instances where my clients were shown a clean Carfax for a vehicle, and it turned out to be wrecked anyway.  How does that happen?

Erica Johnson of Canadian Broadcasting’s consumer television show “Marketplace” did a (pardon the pun) bang up job exposing a shady Vancouver, BC car dealer and Carfax itself.

View the segment here.

Ms. Johnson starts by going to the car lot (accompanied by hidden cameras) and picking out a car that she’s ‘interested’ in.  The dealer tells her it has a clean Carfax, stating, “There’s no problems with the car,” and “we want to show you exactly what we’re selling here.”  She eventually test drives two vehicles which really involves showing  them to a Vancouver Police automobile forensic expert for examination.  He finds evidence of accidents and replacement parts on each car.  Next, they run database searches on Carfax’s competitor Autocheck and find reported frame damage for each. Afterward, they go back and confront the dealer who backs off of his claims and admits that Carfax is not reliable (at 8:45 into the video).

My colleague Bernard Brown from Kansas City, MO appears in the piece. Bernard is the lawyer we autofraud attorneys view as the Michael Jordan of our niche for his expertise, generosity in sharing what he knows, and most importantly, his success in obtaining sizable jury verdicts against those involved in the  wrecked vehicle trade. Bernard explains that Carfax receives a patchwork of information that is frequently incomplete.  He further explains that receipt of a ‘clean’ Carfax report causes consumers to let their guard down.

The shady Vancouver dealer invites Ms. Johnson to contact his former (happy) customers, and she takes him up on it.  They do some checking and find a young dude named Darren, and boy do they have some interesting information for him.  Yep, his SUV,  which Carfax reported as accident free, shows frame damage on Autocheck.  Oops. Erica & Crew go with Darren to a garage where a body expert  puts his SUV on a lift and confirms the damage.  Darren calls the dealer on camera and is essentially told that he is SOL, which is a shame because the damage makes the truck unsafe and worth less than he paid for it.

The best part of the segment is Erica Johnson’s interview with  Carfax spokesman Larry Gamache at its headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia.  Mr. Gamache is a cheeky spokesman who looks straight out of DisneyWorld casting.   He shows up early in the piece touting his company as having ‘the most complete information that’s available to consumers today.’

Erica delivers the coup-de-grace later in the segment when she whips out Darren’s clean Carfax report for Mr. Cheeky.  So why is it that Carfax produced a clean report while the competitor showed the damage?  “I think your question you need to ask is why the people who have the information about the frame damage information why haven’t reported it to Carfax yet.”  Oh really?  But wait, there’s more:

Erica Johnson:  “Darren thought the point of Carfax was to let him know whether the truck he was buying had any problems.”

Mr. Cheeky:  “I’m sorry, he was mistaken.”

Pause and consider that statement. Erica Johnson does as evidenced by the incredulous look her face.  Mr. Cheeky’s look is pretty amusing as well. There is more to the exchange, which is found around 16:44 into the video. I encourage you to watch the whole thing.

What is the Take Home Message?  It is this:

A CARFAX REPORT SHOWING THAT A VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT CANNOT BE RELIED UPON, AND DON’T EXPECT CARFAX OR A DEALER TO TELL YOU THAT.  Carfax is as good as the information reported to it.  Helpful negative information about vehicles do turn up on Carfax reports, but unfortunately, Carfax does not always receive all of the information available.

People in the industry know this (or should know this).  Many dealers purport to have knowledge and to rely on Carfax themselves, but they know better, just like the dealer in this report.   Check your jurisdiction, but in most places dealers have an obligation to know what they’re selling before putting it out into commerce. They can’t play dumb after making false representations about the vehicle’s condition.

Be smart.  Be safe.  Do not be lulled to sleep.  If you are interested in buying a used car, have it checked out by a mechanic and body man first.  If a dealer won’t allow you to have the vehicle independently checked out, go somewhere else.  (And don’t sign any arbitration agreements, but that’s a post for another day).

Kudos to Erica Johnson & the people at CBC Marketplace for a well-done, informative piece.

Greetings sir,

My apologies. I did try to derail a few of your threads.

I've been reading up generally on transmissions and transmission oils.
On the acurazine forum (http://tl.acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=764322&page=24), I see that quite a number of people have used the redline brand of oils, and that for honda transmissions, they recommend a mix of the racing ATF and lightweight racing ATF.

I was wondering what you think. I drive an accord 2005 V6 and I want to change the transmission oil and I see the honda ATF-Z1 has a bad rep for been loaded with too much friction modifiers that cause transmissions to wear out quick.

I would also like to get some if you think its a good idea and was wondering if you could help.

My email address orisbe@yahoo.com.

Thanks

Greetings Chief Siena,

I've been doing some research on transmission oils.
I drive an accord 2005 V6 and I think the honda atf-z1 is absolute crap.

Most of the forums seem to agree that its is so loaded down with friction modifiers and that its not a synthetic oil
(acurazine.com)

Most of the members there seem to swear by the Redline oils- a mix of Redline racing ATF and redline lightweight racing ATF.
The mix, ratio 2:1 gives an oil viscosity of about 8.3; while the ZTF-Z1 is 7.1. But operational temperatures will make that a non-issue.

So 2 things:

What do you think?

Is it available where you are? Can you arrange to help me get some?

(Sorry for hijacking this thread!)

Autos / Transmissions- Theory And Whatever: by Orisdude: 2:33pm On Mar 10, 2011
I drive a honda 2005 V6- very cool ride that E. A Bimbo (Inspired) got for me.
I got interested in transmissions and transmission oils when the driver bringing it down almost gave me a heart attack by putting ABRO in the gearbox. PUSHKA!
Thankfully, it was resolved before any damage was done.
But it has got me interested,

Chemical engineers, in their bid to improve the trans oils available to cater to the newer, sophisticated gearboxes been developed (and make plentyyy money in the process) have compounded new oils left, right and center.

Now, we all know that Honda's are not particularly noted for building excellent transmissions, so if you have a honda you may need to pay attention and be quite deliberate in the maintenance of its transmission.

So enough about the generalizations, my immediate discussion concerns dexron III (and related oils) and Honda ATF-Z1. Honda recommends the exclusive use of Honda ATF-Z1, but says that if not available, a dexron III oil should be used as a temporary stop gap until it can be replaced with the Honda ATF-Z1.

From my research, it would seem that Honda ATF-Z1 is a moderate base oil, a little less viscous than oils branded dexron III (the classification has been discontinued but remains popular). It is modified with the additive called Z1 which is supposed to modify the features of the fluid without affecting its ability to effectively lubricate the transmission. From what I've read however, the general consensus it would seem is this; Z1 affects the viscosity of the fluid by actually reducing it.

The reason for the Z1 additive is to lower the frictional coefficient of the liquid enabling the clutch plates slide over each other at lower engine revolutions/speeds enabling the "imperceptible" shift. What this means is, when driving, a driver will hardly notice the transmission shifts up or down. I see that the opinions is, smoother shifts sell cars but work the gearbox hard and wear it out faster.

Other conventional dexron III liquids make the gearbox operate more "conventionally": the clutch plates don't slide over each other until a certain specific frictional coefficient is reached. The trans shifts are firmer and feel like the those of the first generation auto shifts. But the fluid holds the gearbox parts more "firmly" and prevents them from sliding at the slightest provocation. Which in essence keeps the gearbox longer and in better shape.

So my thinking is, a "firmer" feel on my gearbox is a small price to pay if dexron III maintains it better especially since its older. I saw an article where the author who claimed to have worked for honda helping them develop and test gearboxes said that in a field test with dexron III, the hondas 2004 and 2005 had been able to tow a vehicle each of similar size and shape without wahala even uphill, but that with ATF-Z1, they were unable to do any major pulling.

I'm running coastal dexmerc in my transmission. (It costs just a little less than the Honda ATF-Z1 which is not even available commercially.) I've run it for 2 months, and the liquid looks, feels and smells the exact same way as the day it was put in.

Only thing is that after running for a while, the gear shifts become a bit harsher. I did some research and this is attributed to the torque converter in the gearbox "locking up" because the fluid is heavier and thicker than the Z1. In a couple of articles I read, the authors were so bitter at Z1- and vowed not to ever allow a drop in his hondas. The torque "lockup" was a small price to pay and a number of them were investigating their own additives to reduced "lockup" which I see is described as a "harmless nuisance to smooth shifting".

Experts in the house- can I get some opinions on the issue? Wordd.
