You've given me a lot to think about, but I still wouldn't send her to a Nursing Home.
She wants to go back to naija anywayz.

Nursing homes would cook her the food she loved, wouldn't take care of her as should be taken.
A home healthcare worker has a one to one attention with her, which arely happens in th nursing home.

In some homes, family can bring her their foods whenever they want to
but remember that most of these patients are on some special or modified diets.
Patients in nursing homes can also have one on one private care aides provided for by the families that can afford it.

One "fair skinned " Nigerian nurse went to Nigeria for vacation and ran out of her bleaching cream and returned to America darker  than Kweku Amfosah grin
Even her own kids and friends thought she had contracted a terminal illness
A few months later she was "healed"

grin grin grin i think most of them didn't go into nursing for their humane nature but for the good money.

now that the baby boomers are coming of age, i wonder what's going to happen. i thot the philipinos nurses are the best.

any Nigerian woman who was called to be a nurse went to Yaba school of Nursing and others not UNIBEN and UNICAL for sociology.
I don't trust any of these opportunistic nurses here.
They are all 419ers grin
none of them went in there for the love of that profession.
It's just a job

reloaded, wasn't it in New York that a Jamo impregnated a woman in coma  in anursing home some years ago
The stupid idiot was sexually assaulting this woman until her belle started growing and an ultrasound showed a baby
and she delivered a mixed kid and a paternity test proved who the daddy was.
Very sick!

camnt say I blame people for being fearful though osisi

Some CNAs are disgusting esp those nasty Jamo ones. Very negligent and malicious.

You're right.
The same Jamo could be the care giver people hire in their homes.

are you talking of Jamo CNA,someone talked of Naija nurses that'll flush the medications down the toilet because the shift was over
People are wicked

Ndipe:

My parents are gone, but while I was against the idea initially, now, I am beginning to realize that nursing home isnt that bad of an idea. I mean, you have folks taking care of your parents while you are away at work. Which is better, leaving your parents all by themselves at home and risk themselves to a life threatening danger, or have someone take care of them 24/7.

I still remember the thread where you talked so lovingly about your parents and narrated the ordeal when you went home to bury your mom.
It was so touching.
Bless you.

Nursing homes are not bad at all.
Just because they found a  giant rat in the sweet and sour soup  pot at Asian cuisine doesn't mean restaurants are bad grin

Not all nursing homes are bad.
Imagine if you had a parent that needed to be bathed, toileted, fed  and was on dialysis etc,you would keep her in your home here in the USA wth strangers coming in and out of your home and drive her to be dialysed 3 days a week plus all the specialist visits in between?
When there's an option of a place she could go and be cared for and you pay the bills and visit her daily.?
Plus she'll be having interaction with other residents of the home.
Family / Re: Would You Put Your Parents In A Nursing Home? by osisi2(f): 1:38am On Apr 01, 2009
*Hauwa*:

OgidiBoy, that is very true. the interaction is good for them with regular visit from the children.

That is the key.
God forbid my parent ended up needing care, trust that I'll be at that nursing daily making sure they're taken care of.
Please God keep my parents healthy for me o
Amen!

~Sissy~:

keep their parent in their house plus their family, at least i know many people here who are doing it.

Many people do it because they can't afford nursing homes.
They are expensive.
I know people who have taken care of sick parents till they died, many of them had to quit their jobs and get on welfare and they aged a great deal with all the stress.
Some end up diovorced from their spouses because the illness takes over the entire household.
No body wants to "send their parents away"
but sometimes a nursing home is the best option for sanity sake

Ebony-Silk:

This may be true, but I can't send my mom to a Nursing Home.
I'd arrange for a home healthcare nurse to stay with her at home

Most caregivers come and go.
will they be trained nurses too?
and the caregiver would take her to the frequent doctor visits and is never expected to go on holidays, quit or call in sick?
do you know how much that costs?
If you (God forbid) had a mother than was stricken with alzheimers, you would keep her at home endangering her and your whole family?
Or you'll have her locked at some corner of your home  with a caregiver (assuming you can afford it) rather than a home where she can interact with fellow patients and receive the care she needs.

~Sissy~:

it doesnt always work that way. some people say something and stick to it. when it comes to my parents i dont compromise.

do you think people send their parents to nursing homes because they don't love them?
If you're going to be single forever you can do whatever you want but when you decide to have a family with a husband and children, your parents become secondary.
Your immediate family become your main concern and you can't burden your household with a sick parent altering the whole dynamics of family because you're uncompromising.

Ogidiboy and Osisi, you are both right there. i think there are some nice homes. not all are bad.

question: would you gent and ladies like to wear diaper in your old age?

Hauwa what type of question is this? grin
I don't like wearing pads 4 days a month talk less of diapers?
we do it because we have to
In the same way adult diapers are only worn because they are a necessity

OgidiBoy:

What if you on a fixed income and your wife is out of work and you live in this tiny two bedroom apartment with 3 kids. And what if your mom is getting social security and can afford one of those lovely Elderly homes, is it still wrong to have her live there till things get better ?

Many of these people answering are small girls, college students.
Wait till they're married with a family of their own and a career.

If they needed the care why not ,if you can pay for it.
Is it better to place your life  and your household on hold to take care of ailing parents when there's care available.

I hope the money really goes to the less privileged and not in some thieving pockets like everything else in Nigeria
If individuals had money to help out the underclass, give it directly to the person or persons and not through ventures like this that are mostly shams  set up to enrich some thief meanwhile they've blown their trumpets for all to hear.
The scholarship scheme set up in my hometown ended up a big disaster and the money is still unaccounted for.

who wants to have first hand information on epidurals?
well the second time I told Dr Goldstein that as soon as I hit the labor room ,I need the anesthetist
They marked it on my file
As soon as the labour started and the time was right, my man called Goldstein and  called the Hospital
After we checked in,I requested that I needed the epiduaral right away since I was not about to go through the torture I went through  a few years prior trying to be "natural"
A few minutes later Dr Chin Kong the anesthetist comes in with a needle and syringe the size of a shot gun grin
I thought he was was a veterinarian from the gadgets he had.
It didn't take long for me to realize that I was the horse grin
He swabbed my back and instructed me to keep still.
One small movement he could pierce through my spinal cord and I'll be paralyzed for life
I almost chickened out but I quickly remebered  what I went through a few years earlier and took my chances with paraplegia

It took the first time and it was heaven from then on.
I was flipping the channels on the TV
If I had my laptop ,I would have logged in to Nairaland grin

and all you ladies talking about how the baby wiped away the pain lied. lipsrsealed
I had my kids years ago and up till today I'm traumatized by the hell I went through from home to the maternity room and back grin
where do I begin?
The labor pain was more than anything I had ever experienced.
Leilah captured it and I'll rephrase it

It felt like a  volcano was about to erupt in my pudendal region taking my buttocks with it

then after the birth, the afterpain cry cry cry cry cry
even shots of diamorphine couldn't relieve it
shall I talk of when when they discharge you with vaginal tears and episiotomies? cry cry cry
that you're required to wash with Iodine solution after each pee pee shocked shocked shocked shocked
I spoke  Egbira and Kalabari
