PoliticsUk Whites Scampered For Safety After A Nigerian Identified Self At Train Station by Otobroto(op): 8:46pm On Jan 03, 2010
Abdulmutallab: Nigerians in UK live in panic

Jackson Udom, London - 03.01.2010

A Nigerian, who introduced himself to Sunday Tribune as Mallam Sanni Abdul Rahman may have unknowingly caused a stir at the Kings Cross train station in UK, when all intending passengers largely made up of whites, scampered for safety the moment he entered the train.
This incident occurred barely a week af-ter an attempt was made by a 23-year-old Nigerian, Umar Farouk Mutallab, to blow up an America bound Delta airline.
Abdul Rahman, was dressed in a muslim attire and was therefore mistaken for a terrorist or a muslim fundamentalist. The people thought it would be suicidal to board the same train with Abdul Rahman.

The incident aptly captured the experience which innocent Nigerian residents in the UK are now going through as a result of the December 25 incident.
A week after the Mutallab attempt, the dust raised is yet to settle, even as Nigerian residents in the UK now live in apprehension over the effect which the action of the 23-year-old Nigerian would have on their continued stay in the UK.

Specifically, Nigerians believed to be living in the UK illegally, have now gone into hiding for fear of being swooped on by the Metropolitan Police, who are said to be keeping 24 hours surveillance over areas largely populated by Nigerians, with particular attention on Nigerians with any muslim name.
When Sunday Tribune visited Peckham, Hackneywick, East London, Stevelage and Watford, all outside London and other suburbs in the UK, which are known to be highly populated by blacks, an air of apprehension and fear of the unknown enveloped the area, with residents afraid of going out to engage in their normal daily routine.

It was also gathered that Nigerian students who are genuinely studying in the UK are now living in fear because of the belief that the application for the renewal of their visas to enable them continue with their studies would be rejected.
At the Heathrow and Gatwick airports, intending Nigerian travellers were made to go through serious and inhuman screening before being allowed to board any plane to any destination.

One of the passengers (names withheld), was ordered to remove his belt at the screening point and to the amusement of other Nigerians and travellers on the queue, his trousers fell off and he was almost naked, only for the security operatives to say “we are sorry.”
Another female Igbo traveller, who was visiting Nigeria for Christmas was ferried into the rest room by a female security operative at the airport; she returned complaining that she had been unduly insulted by the security officer.

Speaking with Sunday Tribune on her travail, the fair-looking Nigerian lady from Abia State who pleaded anonymity said, “I wonder why the uncivilised action of one person should be visited on all Nigerians, you needed to see the kind of insult I was subjected to in the toilet, my privacy was infringed upon.
“Nigerian authorities should at this point in time rise up in defence of Nigerians who are genuinely and legally living outside the shores of the country, to put a stop to this insult. If something is not urgently done, Nigerians should be prepared for terrible times.

“No Nigerian is in support of what Mutallab wanted to do, and that is why we are saying that the act of an individual should not be used as a parameter for dealing with others who are legally living and doing businesses outside the country.”
Speaking with Sunday Tribune at Kings Cross Train Station in London, Alhaja Kehinde Okanlawon said “Nigerians are never known to be terrorists, that word is novel to Nigeria and Nigerians. Despite the harsh economic situation in Nigeria, nobody wants to die. The action of Mutallab is already taking its toll on Nigerians here, specifically those with islamic names, we are now being branded as terrorists.
“Even our neighbours and co-workers are now treating us unfairly. It’s not funny at all. We are not free to move around, because wherever we go and whatever we do since last Christmas is now being monitored.

“We are no longer trusted and nobody knows what the authorities in the UK are planning to do under this unbearable situation. “At the train’s stations and airports, any black they see is believed to be a Nigerian, and such must be avoided, it is as bad as that.”
In the words of Muideen Akinola Alao, a student in the UK, “this is the end of the road for Nigeria students here. Even back home, it would now be very difficult for intending students to be granted admissions, not to talk of visas. We are no longer trusted, they have raised the security bars on any Nigerian resident and those planning to travel.

In the past, Nigerians were screened at the airports for illegal food importation, and now terrorism has been added. “We appreciate the proactive step so far taken by the Nigerian government, but they should go beyond that by ensuring that innocent and law-abiding Nigerians are not molested nor subjected to inhuman treatment in their countries of residence.”
Investigation by Sunday Tribune revealed that some Nigerian muslims living in the UK with their male children have ordered them to always be clean shaven in order not to draw an undue attention of security operatives to themselves.

According to Alhaji Usman Sodonki, “I have been living outside the shores of Nigeria for over twenty years, I’m an ardent muslim, Islam as a religion abhors violence, and that is why we vehemently condemn the act of Mutallab, it is un-islamic. Because of how the whites treat any act of terrorism, I have ordered my children to keep as from now on, very clean shave so that they will not be viewed as terrorists. Bin Laden, who is the figure behind terrorism has a long and unkempt beard as his trademark, so I wouldn’t want my children to be mistaken as members of the Al Qaeda.”
It is not only Alhaji Sodonki that had ordered his wards to keep a clean shave, others who did not want their names in print, confided in Sunday Tribune that the most decent thing to do at the moment is to keep a clean shave, because a stitch in time saves nine.

Recently, the spotlight has been shining on a growing drug culture in Abuja. Cocaine is sniffed casually in public area, highbrow clubs and even restaurants as Weekly Trust investigations revealed

The hard drug business appears to be doing very well in Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Deserted areas, mostly uncompleted buildings, are mostly where the activity goes on. Dagba, close to Area I, is the most popular, according to findings. “It is easily the major hot-spot for the sale of cocaine [in Abuja],” said a female patron called Kelly (not real name). “Anything you want, you can find it here, even if cocaine isn’t your thing. It is a veritable Disneyland for us,” she added, referring to fellow drug users, called ‘Coke Heads’ in drug culture parlance. An electrician whose workshop is nearby complained that Dagba is very notorious and found it surprising that even though people keep screaming about the place, trying to draw the attention of the relevant authorities, all seems to be falling on deaf ears. “The dealers are so brazen that they’ll even approach you without being sure if you are interested in their wares,” he said.
Drug usage was hitherto seen as the forte of the Lagos jet-set, whose bank accounts and fast lifestyles are more in sync with the resulting culture. But according to another Abuja-based user, a male who works in the banking industry, while pleading for anonymity, “Cocaine and heroin are in the FCT to stay. There is a lot of money here, so what do you expect?” He also alluded that the biggest customers of the sellers are highly-placed individuals. “There’s a popular politician who I keep bumping into when I go for my twice-weekly fix.”

Mega-popular recreation spots like Millennium Park are a haven-of-choice for users, hence the presence of dealers, according to a family man who told Weekly Trust that he has decided to put a stop to his once-regular family afternoons at the park. “Imagine having to explain to your 12-year-old child why it isn’t good to do drugs, when a few seconds later, well-dressed youth will be sniffing lines of cocaine in plain sight,” he said. Further investigation revealed that many night clubs and even restaurants serve as unofficial joints where cocaine can be purchased and used, often times openly.

At a popular Abuja eatery, an encounter with an addict showed that restaurant proprietors do not want to scare their customers off, so they pretend not to notice. “I buy from elsewhere, but come here to do my lines,” she said, referring to the method of sniffing she prefers. She owns a big cosmetic store which is doing well, and when she was asked why she went into drugs, she shrugged, offering a single word: “Boredom.” Most other users interviewed agreed that boredom is the number one reason, but some of them blamed the clichéd reason of peer pressure. “You have to be perceived as ‘cool’ if you want to belong. And there’s no better way to be cool than to [do drugs].”

An auto parts dealer called Igbenedion (not real name) told Weekly Trust: “You cannot compare Lagos to Abuja as the federal capital seems to be the big deal now. The main drug barons are here in Abuja as they only have their men in other states networking for them. I have on several occasions been approached by some of these dealers to come and join them as a trafficker in return for big money.” Igbenedion confessed to having met one of his would-be employers at an Indian hemp-smoking joint he frequents himself. “I won’t deny the fact that I sometimes smoke Indian hemp but cocaine will definitely not work for me, seeing the way they are being caught nowadays. It’s really not worth the trouble,” he said.

While there is no concrete, obvious reason for the allure which Abuja seems to have for dealers, some development experts are of the opinion that the apparent prosperity evident in the city is a natural magnet for drug sellers and users. According to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), about 98 percent of all suspects arrested at Abuja Airport with drugs, mostly cocaine, are individuals from various parts of the country other than the FCT.

Then there is the viewpoint of one Alice Atama, once a drug addict, who said she was doing very well until she met some friends who introduced her to cocaine. “The reason nothing’s being done as the problem grows and grows is there are influential people and their kids involved,” she said, also bashing the police. “Let me also use this opportunity to say that the police are not helping matters as they do go there sometimes to raid the place and in the next 3-4 days they culprits are off the hook again and it is back to business as usual.” In the same breath, she commended the cops. “They are always raiding, which is good, but there are no results and the problem remains, growing.” Various police spokesmen declined comment over the phone, citing the holiday period as an excuse. The police in Area I proved difficult to speak to, as the officers there insisted that it was the Divisional Crime Officer (DCO) that could speak on that issue. An officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said their hands are tied in the situation. “We arrest, including important personalities in the society, and others come to bail them, leaving us in a fix.

The FCT command of the NDLEA was more forthcoming. The Head, Public Affairs Department, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said there is indeed a rise in the activities of drug dealers and users. “This year, 2009, saw us recording the highest number of arrests, both at our Airport Command and at our FCT Command, due to new, more stringent methods we’ve employed,” he told Weekly Trust. He also said drug barons have always targeted Nigeria to be a major transit route for them in West African sub-region. At the airport, total seizures from January 2009 to date stand at 56.52kg of various types of drugs, half of which is mainly cocaine. The FCT Command, in the same time-frame, recorded an alarming 300 grams, a larger chunk of which is cannabis, followed by cocaine.

What is its selling point? Cocaine – a high-priced way of getting high – seems to have a mystique. Nick-named ‘the caviar of street drugs,’ it is seen as the status-heavy drug of celebrities and wealthy people. Users describe it as a “heavenly high”. But as an ex-user said, the reality of the white powder hits after the high, as it has powerful negative effects on the heart, brain, and emotions. Cocaine is a purified extract from the leaves of the Erythroxylum coca bush. This plant grows in the Andes region of South America. Powdered cocaine, commonly known as “coke,” dissolves in water. Users can snort or inject powdered cocaine.

According to a Kaduna-based doctor, Auwal Ibraheem, cocaine users often describe the euphoric feeling as an increasing sense of energy and alertness and, a feeling of supremacy, among others. “On the other hand, some people describe other feelings tagging along with the high: irritability, paranoia, restlessness and anxiety. While it harms the brain, heart, blood vessels and lungs, it can even cause sudden death,” Ibraheem added.

A document from United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) said there are myriad of reasons for the prevalence of drug abuse in the population, including socio-cultural displacement of young people through rapid urbanization and modernization, general poverty levels that increase the vulnerability of children and the belief among prostitutes, labourers, commercial drivers and law enforcement agents that narcotics increase energy for tedious and long hours of work.

Stats for users vary from city to city, but Abuja’s are as follow: From January 2009 to date, 36 males and one female have been arrested at the airport forpossession of hard drugs, most of which is, again, cocaine. The FCT Command recorded arrest of 196 males and 5 females, according to Ofoyeju. “It is indeed a growing problem, but adequate measures are currently being employed to take care of the situation,” he assured. But Atama, the ex-addict, does not agree. She concluded: “This cocaine thing is the business of the super-rich. Cocaine business, as I see it from the point of view of a one-time insider, is here to stay in Abuja. It will take the grace of God and well-meaning Nigerians to stall the dangerous trend.”

Abdulmutallab: U.S. Lauds Nigeria’s Co-operation

• American Intelligence Officials Flood Abuja

By Paul Arhewe (Lagos) and Chinedu Offor (Washington DC) (With Agency Report)

Washington has expressed satisfaction with Abuja’s support in the investigation of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab who attempted to bomb an American airliner on December 25.
United States officials said both Nigerian diplomats and security agencies have been providing “appreciable co-operation.”
Dozens of American intelligence officials are in Abuja and some Northern states seeking background information on the family of Abdulmuttab, son of former First Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA) Chairman, Umaru Mutallab.
The father, suspicious of his terrorist activities, had reported him to security agents and the U.S. embassy in Abuja last month.
CIA and the FBI operatives will undertake a security tour of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos to determine how Abdulmutallab left the country with a bomb sewn inside his underwear.
While the investigation continues, fears that the latest religious violence in Bauchi could spread to neigbouring states has prompted America to order all its citizens to leave Northern Nigeria.
The State Department also asked Americans in other parts of the country to “be vigilant and take additional security precautions” because of a possible break down of law and order.
President Barack Obama directed that additional CIA and FBI officials be drafted to the Nigerian Desk in the State Department to monitor the situation.
“Nigeria is emerging as a potential trouble spot and we are being prudent in keeping a closer watch on developments”, an official told Daily Independent in Washington
The CIA had in its annual report labeled Nigeria as “a potential recruiting ground for terrorist groups” and warned that Al-Qaida seeks to overthrow the Nigerian Government because of the perception that it is not a religious extremist.
CIA officials argued that the high population of jobless youths and growing Koranic schools pose a threat not just to Nigeria but other nations.
“These are where vulnerable youths are indoctrinated and by fundamentalist groups” the said.
Washington is also deploying other assets through its Africa Military Command of (AFRICOM) to monitor developments, the White House is worried by “the seeming power vacuum” caused by the absence of President Umaru Yar’Adua.
The Associated Press (AP) reported on Tuesday that Yemeni Information Minister, Hassan al-Lozy, disclosed that Abdulmutallab lived in Yemen for two different periods of time, from 2004 to 2005, and from August toDecember this year.
Abdulmutallab was in Yemen from early August to early December 2009 after receiving a visa to study Arabic in a school in the capital, San’a.
Al-Lozy said the Yemeni embassy in Washington has been instructed not to issue any more visas to students who want to study in the country without Interior Ministry approval.
It also emerged on Tuesday that over 300 Internet postings purportedly written by Abdulmutallab showed that his terrorist conduct was a build up from loneliness and depression suffered over the past years.
With a user name “Farouk1986”, Abdulmutallab shows that he is a fervently religious and lonely young man who fantasised about becoming a Muslim holy warrior.
The postings reflect on a growing alienation from his family, his shame over sexual urges, and his hopes that a “great jihad” will take place across the world.
While officials haven’t verified that the postings were written by Abdulmutallab, details from the posts match his personal history.
For example, the username also matches the alleged bomber’s middle name and birth year.
Farouk1986 says he is from Nigeria, the suspect’s father says Abdulmutallab broke off ties with the family.
Those posts, beginning in 2005, show a teenager looking for a new life outside his boarding school and wealthy Nigerian family.
Most of all, they paint a portrait of someone who seems lost and needs someone to hear him.
The postings seem hastily written, and are replete with spelling and grammatical errors.
In one, on January 28, 2005, he wrote: “I am in a situation where I do not have a friend, I have no one to speak too, no one to consult, no one to support me and I feel depressed and lonely. I do not know what to do.”
The posts were made to an Islamic bulletin board called Gawaher, which literally translates from Arabic as “gems” or “jewels,” but can also be read as “essence” or “spirit.”

He said though Farouk’s father, Alhaji Umaru Mutallab had informed the US Embassy in Abuja about his son’s renegade activities, there was nothing negative about him that could warrant close monitoring.

He however said inter-agency action to track his activities failed because he was not considered a huge risk. Because there were no indications that he was about to carry out a terrorist attack.

"There was no suggestion he was about to carry out a terrorist act," the official said.

Kelly said Mutallab, came to the embassy in Abuja, Nigeria, on November 19.

"He was concerned about his son’s safety and whereabouts and wondered if the U.S. government could help," the official said. "The father said he was in Yemen," this official said. "His son had gone from London to Yemen."

He said this information was based on what the father said, though it was not corroborated.

The next day, November 20, the U.S. embassy in Abuja sent what is called a "Visas Viper cable" to the State Department detailing the father’s concerns, Kelley said.

The information was passed on to the National Counter-Terrorism Center in Washington, which ruled that the information in the cable was "insufficient for this interagency review process to make a determination that this individual’s visa should be revoked."

"The Secretary of State can unilaterally revoke a visa but usually does that for foreign policy and diplomatic, not national security, reasons.

"This has to be done in consultation with other agencies.

"At the time, there was nothing in his application, nor in any data base at the time, that would warrant that he should not receive a visa. He was a student at a reputable school; he had plenty of financial resources. , There was no derogatory information about him last year that would have indicated that he should not get a visa," Kelley said.

no one knows where he got his explosive device- he also went to Ghana btw. Not saying he didnt carry it from Nigeria though.

However, airport security is supposed to be designed to prevent and catch such things.

besides, the way the news was going on and on about his nationality was just plain disgusting.
I know that any news about Nigeria is good news in Journalism. Something tells me, he never carried that explosive from here, but his nationality disturbs me most.

very true unless they make exceptions for certain people or have some shady business going on
Does that mean the guy did not carry the bomb from Nigeria, even with all these Boko Haram guys, and local Taliban around us?

i like to think ppl go into marriage with the best intentions, my dear you  can be with a saint for 20 yrs and it s still go sour, its a lottery you can not even begin to predict how ppl turn out. ppl change too remember? ppl grow in a marriage too and begin to want different things its the nature of this beast called HUMAN
Yes at this point, I will agree with you, though, I will differ a little. I always look at marriage as an institution where certificates are issued to their students even before lectures begin. You receive your certificate before you begin to attend to lectures. In this school, you must look for an appropriate course, where you know you have comparative advantage (which represents your husband). In all, the foundation of every marriage, matters. If it is founded on trust, love, sincerity, endurance, the will of GOD and tolerance, then, when the storm of life in marriage comes, and the foundation is solid, then it will survive. But if it is founded on lies, deceit, and greed and gold digging, then the result is what is happening in the show business.

wow so remain in a marriage even if it make u very unhappy, bring up unhappy kids, live a lie. sorry i respect culture however i think every single one of us use it to judge and remain hypocrites. it makes us feel better to be able to point at anther a say '' did you hear? ''' did u see?''
That is the reason why I always tell people to be mindful of whom they marry. Marriage is not all about "husband and wife", but it is all about two different people with different background coming together under agreement to live together forever. I personally tell people to engage themselves in some family history search, spiritually, and physically. There are marriages that one will enter into, and things will work perfectly (though with some very minor shortcomings). There are some that are already doomed from inception. It boils down to the people involved. The foundation of marriage too matters.

i really couldnt give a rats behind about celebs and their lives. Marriages fail not first wont be the last and it always takes two to tango. i thought Nigerians were ssmarter than this? all this celeb culture is tiresome
I have always said it, that the live of celebrity can be ignored in western cultures, but not like that in Nigeria. In Nigeria, we have a way of live, which is duplicated in all the cultures in the land. It is a serious taboo in some culture here, to even divorce your husband, talkless of going after a second husband.

I have read through this thread and have not seen where it was written that, it was by force for you to comment. If you dont have anything to say, please shut the trap!. The thread is all about the reason why she relocated. Could it be that, the new lover residing at Lekki instigated her divorce? Which has even made her now go about with body-guards. Please get a job or something, instead of talking rubbish!.
