abduleez1:I remember when "Joker" (2019) dropped and first critics review where on about, "Oh it was too violent", "oh it's gonna increase gun violence"...like violence and gun crimes didn't exist before....like the movie birthed it!, it didn't even deter me, i was seated by 10am on 5/10/2019, and we were like 3 in the cinema hall, and we had a treat!. It turned out to be one of my best movie experiences pre covid world before the madness of the lockdown started. It went on to totally smash it at the B.O, and Joaquin Phoenix getting Oscar's best actor nod, and when called upon to receive said award, this brother appeared so nonchalant, yapping about Animal rights and what not, and there have been whispers about the mental toll the character took on him, so i didn't even remotely think he was gonna sign up for a second one... So you can imagine my joy π©π©....and they went ahead to cast Lady Gaga as "Harley Quinn" that's like going "crazy for crazy", and to top it all off, they pulled Bredan Gleeson from Ireland. This is like A1 casting.... So brother, i can't tell you how unbelievably back we are π©π© . Seated for this feasting βπΎ 5 Likes 4 Shares |

After a long hiatus, i invested in some horror stock, this week.... Longlegs (2024). skin crawling, gut turning indie horror fest.... A seemingly clairvoyant FBI agent investigates a series of bizarre familicide-murder that occurs in a defined pattern, and give an inkling, that suspects are just clever and nothing out of the ordinary is going on, but as we go deeper, she soon come to realize that, the murders are beyond "clever" and something more sinister is going on, and that the man downstairs might be involved.... Special praise for Nicholas Cage who shines as Longlegs, invoked genuine dread with his mannerism alone and i am so in tuned, with his post blockbuster/retirement vibes. He is now able to casually drop all timer performances like this, that truly shows what an exceptional actor he is. Also happy for Neon cuz has A24 seemed to have dimmed the lights on indie flicks that are not expected to bring in big bucks, they have stucked to their guns and "LongLegs" hav actually gone on to be thier biggest payday yet at the B.O. 7/10. Oddity (2024) Absolutely... Absolutely.... Terrifying! Straight out of the bat, this was quite possibly the most nerve wrenching flick i have seen in a while.... Damian McCarthy's follow up to "Caveat (2020), is an irish horror masterpiece that didn't even waste time like "LongLegs" to reveal itself to be a supernatural bone chilling ride... A one eyed man goes to a woman's house at the dead of night, to inform her that some entity has entered the house before him to kill her and he has come to save her, the woman is hesitant to open the door, cuz she's quite sure that's she is the only one in the house....or so she thought... A delightful treat, if you like 80s-90s horror...no dilly dally.... straight up eerie and unsettling spectacle.... I'm quite convinced that 2024, is truly the year for horror flicks and i might start taking the genre seriously again... 8/10. 5 Likes

OhBritannia:This particular sub genre of movies are one of my faves. Limited cast, and basically one scene and shot. You'd just know the dialogues are going to be intriguing as the cast just gone on with rich discussion about life in general...no particular plot point, just wholesome human connection.. I totally enjoyed this one and i agree with your rating. 1 Like

Palehair: True...True... Indie filmmakers used to have stories closer to almost 100% originality far from the madness of blockbusters but the allure has always been low, because at the end of the day, they still use money to produce and not getting that investment back is bad business. A24 used to be a haven for indie filmmakers, but even they are moving away from making many arthouse flicks, in favor of commercial flicks, just to stay in business. Even the streaming/VOD pipeline seemed like a huge break for arthouse flicks but blockbusters are running away from long cinematic runs, and releasing earlier on streaming platforms and competing with them. The biggest film playing right now is Alien Romulus, this film has been going on since the 70s, meaning they have been recycling it for 45 years!, this year alone, we have had a Kong movie, a Kung Fu panda flick, A Ghost busters flick, A mad max flick etc...zero new ideas, just throw in some woke nonsense and agenda, and call it a day. Some of these franchises should have been retired by now. I know the aim for these prod companies is to make money and nostalgic bait is a safe net for them, but i totally detest the state of movies now. |

Baddestguyp: Hence my last paragraph. Thousands of idea have existed that it has become so difficult to flesh out an entirely new one, but there is a way to creatively "rebrand" existing ideas to make them somewhat new. However, like you have alluded, these writers would rather play safe and dance around the same idea for ages, leading to more garbage media out these days than actual good ones. I mean, our imagination are literally limitless, it can't be that hard. |

This thought makes me ponder, can there actually be an "original" idea for a film or a show going forward? Like 100% fresh, and never seen before idea? π€. I highly doubt, but i think there are so many materials and books that films and show can adapt from, and there is a way for screen writers to tweak existing IPs, to maintain some certain degree of originality and keep things fresh. |

abduleez1:A review i culled from IMDB below, kinda of encapsulates how I feel about this, and to some extent aligns with your review, because i didn't think for the life of me, they had more meaningful story to tell beyond part 2, they even egged out a separate "Minions" movie sometime ago, that didn't really hit so i wondered why there was need for this, if not for the serial nostalgic baiting milking scheme, that seems to be a theme recently in Hollywood, I mean a new "Toy Story" and "Frozen" is also planned, even "The Lion King" is getting another remix soon π©. Media that isn't based on existing IP or franchise is such a rare find now, and i think this kind stifles creativity but they should totally carry on, as it seems that's what the people want ππΏ

"Inshallah a boy" (2023) One Sharia Law for men....A totally different one for women...... This compelling flick totally mirrors, an average Asghar Farhadi's feature....high octane Arabian family drama and you'd be forgiven if you thought this was one of his films, because of how good this was... Amjad Al Rasheed's debut directorial film delves into sociatal pressures and gender expectations of a muslim woman in patriarchal society vested on the fringes of the Sharia law, where the birth of a male child is seen as a measure of a women's worth. The film centers on Nawal, a widow whose life takes a drastic turn after the sudden death of her husband. The plot intensifies when Nawal realizes that without a male heir, her late husband's family has the legal right to claim her home, leaving her and her daughter homeless. The story unravels as Nawal grapples with the harsh realities of a legal system and culture that place the burden of producing a male child on her shoulders. The film is marked by outstanding performances, particularly from the lead actress, who brings a deep emotional resonance to her role. The cinematography is beautifully crafted, capturing the stark contrasts between the intimate spaces of Nawalβs home and the imposing legal and societal structures that threaten her. The use of light and shadow, along with the film's pacing, creates a tense atmosphere that keeps viewers engaged. "Inshallah a Boy" does more than just tell a story; it opens up a conversation about gender inequality, inheritance laws, and the often overlooked struggles of women in the Arab world. Itβs a film that resonates on many levels, offering both a critical lens on societal norms and a moving portrayal of a womanβs fight for her rights and dignity especially in a religion that seemly embodies men to stifle women's right, as they blindly believe that's how a woman should be and that's how she remains "pure". The title isn't by chance or to serve as a satire, it captures the entire mood of the film...."Inshallah a boy"...... literally translates to "By God's grace, A boy"....a plea by the main character to God for a boy.....A boy that makes her a "Woman".... Top tier film 8/10. 3 Likes 1 Share

Flamemignon1:It begs the question, A publicity stunt to what end? because people have literally lost their jobs because of it and pre production budget up in flames. First and foremost, the movie was his idea, he was the one that brought it up to Todd as Phoenix is still producing it, sets have even been built. Are you telling me he just threw away money like that? In this economy that celebs are also feeling? Playing a role that is as sensitive as that and different from what he actually is irl is enough valid reason for him to develop "cold feet", furthermore, Actors are scrutinized more than ever now, and he probably felt he wouldn't be able to interpret the role as good as initially thought so rather than do a poor job and get vilified by the LGBTQA community, it was better he backed out now, and i think this is a valid reason. He was the one that pushed for the movie to be NC-17 and pushed for the sex scenes to be super graphic when Todd wanted to make it tame He probably didn't envisage how graphic it would be in real life, and it probably looked rather tame in his head. So him been straight, the role became all too difficult to interpret, and this again is a valid reason. You wan tell me say baba just decide say he's developing cold feet 5 days to shooting when his money is at stake too? Smells of PR stunt if you ask meAt bolded i know you are just saying that out of spite!. Joaquin Phoenix is an oscar best actor winner, and that's like an exclusive club, a club of like 5% of all actors that have ever existed!. Again, i beg to wonder what kind of Publicity stunt he was going for doing this. He is an A list actor, so he must likely didn't have his personal money in production, and most likely would have had backers who he might have explained his decision to, before announcing it. He will continue to be sought after because the talent is there. He is even a reclusive, that's why he picks carefully the role he's in, if not he would be in just about every film, with the kind of talent he has. So this has done nothing to his reputation in the market. Again like i said before, i have never been a fan of straight actors telling the stories of non-straight people. The LGBTQA community are a unique speck of the human condition and nobody can tell their story better than them. It is still a sensitive grey area for most straight actors, some can go through with it and others can't and it doesn't negate their talent. I think the best representation of the community by straight actors i have seen in the recent times have been Eddie Redmayne in "The Danish Girl" (2015), but not every straight actor can be Eddie Redmayne!. So casting crew casting actors/actress according to thier orientation might be the best way to go. Joaquin Phoenix probably would have just got his act and called it quit earlier than this, rather than causing this unnecessary drama which has made him quite possibly a persona non grata in the non straight community. |

abduleez1:I think we talked about this some weeks ago. Their business model is not a very smart one. Them trying to go bullish as a rookie in the business whilst ignoring marketing and publicity always looked doomed to me from the onset. More surprising is that thier parent company literally built thier name from strong marketing strong arm and publicity. Apple could easily sell you a basic pen and slap one gimmick name on it, and it will be the most expensive pen you'd ever see and people will rush to buyπ©, so uncanny how Apple TV is fumbling this bad with such a great rooster. TKOTFM VOD release was like 3 weeks after the cinematic release, and for a big budget title with one of the best filmmakers on board, i was wondering what was even the point? Why not just do am exclusive VOD release on your platform?. The good thing is that, Apple TV plus isn't limited off Apple inc yet, and so the parent company still bankrolls it and chest all the losses they have incured during their short stint so far. If they were actually running on their on profits, Apple TV plus would actually cease to exist within the next few years π |

. On a serious note, casting crew should know that despite actors been able to bend and navigate through a number of roles, roles that would involve sexual orientation different from the one they are irl would always be sensitive to some actors/actress and it's best to just cast straight characters to straight actors and non-straight characters to non-straight actors/actress to avoid all these drama. At least both side of the divide have enough good actors currently for this to happen

Phones / Re: The Xiaomi Thread. by oyaskii(m): 5:37pm On Aug 07 |
noobody:To me personally, foldables serves no immediate purpose that a phone, a tab or a PC isn't already doing and doing better. Hardly before you find people using them as a primary device. All the quirks are still been figured out and the technicalities involved makes it harder for even the most careful user to use them hassle free. For E.G, in the last one month or so, Samsung Care+ has seen increased number of damage screen issues from Fold 5 users, from simply trying to apply a screen guard on it, and with the current market fluctuations, the replacement screen is costing an upwards of 400k without a Samsung care+ insurance plan!. So my advice to people looking at foldables is to get a high end flagship phone instead or get a high end tab, if there is a need for a larger screen. Your mind will be far far at rest than dealing with the technicalities that foldables poses at the moment. 1 Like |

lol Ned Stark's Head was already off and the threat of the White Walkers was already well and truly established by the end of S1 because ain't no way people are comparing GOT to the horrendous pacing of HOTD. A well versed writers room would have had HOTD almost finished by the end of this S2. I most likely think these tease they have done for S1 and S2 is to unnecessarily elongate the show for relevance and financial gain. But alas it seems they have forgotten that the attention span of the world that saw GOT in 2011, it's incredibly shorter than those that are seeing HOTD today. The world is moving at an incredible pace, i basically can't even keep up with events that even happened like 2 weeks ago, as other events has toppled them for relevance. For context, i recently animated a social media publicity post for a brand that was about 4 minutes long, the publicity team rejected it, not because it wasn't good enough but they felt 4 minutes was too long!, and that if i hadn't passed my message by the 2nd 60 seconds at most, the message is lost because the tik tok syndrome has been found to be real, and people's attention span has been wrecked by it. Point being, with all this unnecessary tease and dilly dally, HOTD did in this S2, which is now basically 17 episodes that covers only like 22% of the books, so let's see if it holds enough relevance for people to be genuinely interested in it, in probably 2 years time when they return. I actually think people who haven't read the book would have even gone through the pain to read it between that time and just be done with it. Most people has either read the books or have had idea of the excerpt of the books, there was no need to be 100% faithful to the actual book!, like the whole Demon and Harrenhal shindig could have been over in an episode or 2, if the showrunners were serious, they let it dragged on all season, when it was so obvious that this brother was gonna bend the knee. The hate and disgust for that season finale was loud and clear, so if the showrunners like, they should not have sense and keep teasing till thy kingdom come! π€ 5 Likes 1 Share

Snerting AKA Touch (2024) "I hope you had a good life.... Nothing to complain about....." This gripping romance drama is a fusion of Icelandic and Japanese cinema, so you already know it's going to be good. The story unfolds in a non-linear fashion, spanning 51 years and culminating during the high-pressure days of the COVID-19 lockdown. It tells the tale of a man separated from his one true love simply because she is a "Hibakusha"βa Japanese term meaning "survivor of the bomb." While this might seem like a positive label, in post-World War II Japan, it became a slur. The term refers to survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima at the twilight of the war. These survivors were burdened with survivor's guilt and ostracized as outcasts, forbidden to love, to be loved, or to procreate for fear of giving birth to a "radioactive child." Amidst this backdrop, the film chronicles the man's 51-year-long quest to see his one true love one last time. This bittersweet romantic story subtly reminds the audience, scene by scene, of the traumatic damage caused by atomic warfare during WWII. It asks whether such extreme measures were absolutely necessary, as the emotional toll of that singular decision continues to outweigh the immediate need to end the war at all costs. All in all, the film reminds us of the importance of taking a breath, being present, and appreciating what we haveβbecause it could all be gone in an instant. A beautiful cinematic piece, and I'm always here to remind you all to watch foreign-language films! More often than not, there's beauty within. πΈ One of my favorite films of the year, and in a year littered with "stones," this stands out as a shining gem. 8/10. 1 Like 1 Share

Baddestguyp: I totally agree with this review. The show is almost satirical in nature when mirroring it side by side with the actual events of the Roman history. Using this lens to see the show, you might enjoy it more. Exactly as you allude, there are so many plot convenience bend to make the plot progress and they can be easily overlooked and forgiven since the show isn't aiming for the Emmy awards or anything a tad fancy. I actually like how they mesh many plot lines at the beginning and they all just found a common ground as they went along, not the greatest writing but with was more than okay. And was it just me, or for a show called "Those about to die", the gore was minimal at best, the gladiatorial scenes were few and far between and it was more of Horse/Chariot racing with a lot of political scheming in between. Even the explicit scenes that historical shows are known for where so few that the show could easily passed for a PG-13 show. I am totally convinced they slapped Anthony Hopkins on there for marketing purposes because believe you, me, that man had absolutely nothing to do with the show π©. Good show overall, not great, Just good and easily digestible. And should they decide to make another season, I will be there.βπΎ 4 Likes |

OhBritannia:The Oscars and the Emmy are not particular to any race, and so it's not an white only thing. The AMCVAs takes care of movies of African origin, and so on and so forth, as abduleez1 has stated, there are many other black oriented award platforms that rewards black only media, and surprisingly enough there are none exclusively reserved for caucasians. Now you wanting a black only award show, that is on the scale of the Oscars or the Emmys might be a far fetched idea, because i don't even think Blacks makes enough really good media consistently to warrant such clout. If there is an outstanding performance in a movie/show that is black oriented, trust me, the Oscars or the Emmys will recognize them 2 Likes |
