Marketing gimmick 101 fgss.

I thought at first, why did they not release it on November 12, since the obvious emphasis is on the number 12 😩🤔, they just deliberately moved a day further, and now everyone is gonna be wondering like me, why didn't they just release it on November 12th..hence more traction...hence more expectation...hence more potential views.

The marketing team got me ngl, so i am quite sat for this 👍🏿

Lanterns (2026)

This might be a tedious, tedious watch.

The vision James Gunn has had for DC since he rose to the helm looked so bold and good on paper, but they haven't exactly translated into proper execution. I don't think there has been a single DC project since he took over that has stuck the landing.

Enter Lanterns.

I was genuinely excited for this one, but that excitement came with a caveat, seeing that they hired Damon Lindelof as the showrunner. I mean, this man could turn a kids' show into some political allegory 😩.

After seeing the first episode, I don't even know what to feel. It just feels like the show is struggling to figure out what it wants to be. It feels more like a True Detective wannabe masquerading as a superhero show, when obviously it should be the latter.

The show doesn't know if it should be a goofy cop-buddy show or a plainly political one. This struggle with identity is the most glaring problem with the show, and it stems from a showrunner wanting to imprint his scent on the show while relegating the source material to the background.

I have a theory that the reason they named it Lanterns and not Green Lanterns is so they can shape it however they see fit.

I came in for an intergalactic superhero show, and I'm hearing "go back to your country" tropes, "girl boss" tropes, diversity tropes... like, what are we even doing here?

The characters are annoying to a fault. I'm currently rooting for none of them. The sheriff is chief among them.

I hate how Hal Jordan was going back and forth with her just to get time with that alien when he literally has the power of the Lantern. I guess this is just a way for the show to have enough material to fill a one-hour episode runtime.

Kyle Chandler seems like the only actor that wants to be on the show. I'm not a huge fan of Aaron Pierre's acting...it feels too flaccid.

I shouldn't have this many think pieces to talk about after just one episode, but the episode has given me a lot to talk about.

I just hope the high ratings aren't simply because it portrays a current political trend. I hope the other episodes allow the show to establish its true identity.

Serious movie wrapped up in comedy. Seth Rogen is as always the bomb in delivering " dry bar" comedy. He had me laughing most of the time particularly when the discussion moved sexual.

I really get the movie the end was particularly deep. The conversation between the couple and prnelope cruz ( been a while I've seen her ).

Olivia wilde killed her role moving from anxious to excitement to resentment and finally quiet supportive acceptance.

Edward Norton was also quite good.

The cast killed his movie and if it weren't for the comedic bits I would have said Oscar in the calling.

Worth a watch yes highly recommended.

One thing i liked about it was how there was a clear distinction between the jokes and the seriousness of the subject matter, so the message at the end was very clear.

Though, the Oscars tends to favour dramatic roles, but i will argue this had a bit of drama in it, it is officially billed as a comedy drama even. Plus, not like we have been treated to many stellar performances this year

Moonlight (2016)

Who is you, Man?

I don't think I have missed seeing an Oscar Best Picture-winning flick in the last 10 years, except for this one, and I really needed to correct that.

The story is about a boy named Chiron, told through three stages of his life. The acts are aptly named after him and his nicknames: "Little," "Chiron," and "Black." Exploring masculinity,loneliness, and the desperate need to be loved. The movie isn't "grand"... the beauty lies in how subtly it tells this story.

Chiron grows up in a world where men are taught to act a certain way to be accepted, and vulnerability is treated as weakness. He eventually builds himself into this version...hardened, tattooed, grills and all...as "Black." But beneath it all, he was still that soft little boy inside, desperately yearning for love and purpose in his life.

And that, for me, is what Moonlight is about....the versions of ourselves we create just to survive.

The cinematography was top work, especially the use of the colour blue throughout.

Mahershala Ali as Juan is one of the shortest appearances in a motion picture with a profound impact on the entire film that I have seen in a while. There is a quote he tells Chiron that captures the latter's struggles. It goes, "In the moonlight... black boys look blue." That becomes a metaphor for Chiron himself: his identity, vulnerability and masculinity are perceived differently depending on the environment and the people around him.

This is such an A24 film in every sense of it. The kind of film that made them one of my favourite studios... literally giving me some of my best movies ever. They might have lost the wheel a little, but I am glad this studio exists.

I enjoyed Moonlight a little more than I thought I would, and it would have been an easy recommend, but some of the subject matter is still taboo here.

But still... special, special film!✨

Kraven the Hunter (2024).

This Reverse Masterpiece 🥳🥳

The attempt by Sony to use marvel characters they own rights to, to create some sort of superhero universe has always been laughble, but this takes the cake.

I had the unfortunate pleasure of pushing play to this and believe me, I have seen my fair share of truly despicable films, all my time as a cinephile but this might genuinely be the worst movie I have ever seen 😭😭.

I couldn't even tell you plot without sounding like a knobhead. 😭😭

I spent almost the whole of yesterday listening to music from morning till midnight on Apple Music.
E be like say I go stick to my Spotify. It seems my issue with it na just a few cherry pickings.

I'm not really into lyrics these days like I used to. Maybe, 3-5yrs ago, I seriously needed it. Now na to dey rhyme and mime with any lyrics wey I no fit grab. 😂😂
It's mainly usually rap battles, eg Drake vs Kendrick Lamar that's where I seriously need the lyrics sometimes to see how heavy hitting the bars and banter is.

But it's a nice feature to have on day one on Apple Music.

Spotify truly has the best UI/UX. I was struggling to find link to the album of a song directly from the now playing page on Apple Music. Something that was just two clicks away on Spotify, I dey use 2hrs dey reason where dem hide am.

Then there's the Apple Music radio feature, probably something to do with its UI/UX, I tap on one of the radio stations and I barely know if I've clicked on it, there's no subtle highlight to tell if I clicked it and I have to wait like 3s before I'm sure I clicked on it when it starts to play.
That's unlike Spotify's where even if the song ain't playing yet or loading due to network quality, you see an highlight to know yeah you clicked on this thing, just waiting for the internet to do its thing.

Spotify recommendations algorithm to me seems unmatched. I dey listen to rap and afro beats and Apple Music go dey recommend Jazz and R &B gimme. 💀
One of the things that made me hate YT Music.

Nothing for this life fit make me go back to YouTube Music. I try am for free earlier this year, I run back asap after a week. The UI/UX is the most useless shite I've ever seen. Too many buttons and things on your screen..... Too many options wey no really necessary or make sense.

I'm surprised you said YouTube Music has the best recommendation. I believe Spotify has always had that crown. The last I can remember from YouTube music recommendations is that it seems pretty better than Apple's.

What they have over Spotify is sound quality. The songs seem louder, fuller and more bass and stereo surround compared to Spotify.

Apple Music's lossless audio, I could hardly tell a difference compared to the standard one. I also saw online most people can't tell the difference with cheap headphones, saying where the difference is notable are for like those music studio setup where every breath can be heard.

Been having a few issues with Spotify Premium renewal, and freemium has almost run me m@d so I say make I branch out.

loool...Yeah.. Spotify is kinda the most "balanced" amongst the 3. The audio quality thing to me sef is negligible among them, except you are a core audiophile, using any good headphones or buds, has you set.

Brooo... spend considerable time with YT music and you'd know their music recommendations is top notch.

For the payment thing, it isn't a hassle with me o..I just added my Opay card to my Google account, so i pay for all my google/google play services there, which include apps i need to pay premium for, which includes Spotify and AM...so maybe try it, instead of trying to pay directly on the apps.

Oyaskii, just decided to check out Apple Music premium, and it's been pretty good so far. The sound quality seems fuller and slightly more quality than Spotify's. And I'm not even using the Lossless audio feature sef.

I like the UI so far. Pretty clean and smooth. Still a few things I gotta get used to. I still really like Spotify's tho. But it's better with smoother UI, the thingy with the lyrics. I don't know if lyrics is available on day one, a feature Spotify been falling off lately. Still to fully confirm that. Spotify seems to have the edge on algorithm tho, still na just for two days I don dey use am.

But man, this Chris Nolan's the Odyssey movie music with Travis Scott is an epic banger man!!! Ludwig Göransson is HIM.

Spotify UI is A1, plus the music recommendations is dope too, and they have some niche features blending playlists with friends, and creating playlists with AI, i could be in the mood for some calm songs for a workflow, and the AI will pick the best ones instantly, but their lyrics feature is terrible and their song quality is suspect.

Apple Music has terrible UI and song recommendations, but crazy song quality plus lossless audio, dolby and spatial audio on supporting buds. They recently upgraded their lyrics game, they even offer translations for none English song, a feature i really like because i listen to foreign language songs alot, and the lyrics feature comes in day one.

YouTube music, the absolute best when it comes to recommendation...like they know what you want to listen to next from a shuffle 😩😩, good song quality too...but the UI/UX is terrible..they can't seem to separate audio from video...but it comes bundled with YT premium.

Just stick with the Apple Music sha...if it's audio quality and lyrics function you care about, it should serve you .👍🏿

This man sacrificed himself to save this same universe as "IronMan". The emotional legacy that singular act has on this franchise is eroded by him appearing as a Supervillain in the same franchise. Whether he is in a mask or not, you'd subconsciously know it is RDJ and that's a taint...but hey man, i get it. After the Jonathan Majors debacle, they had to come up with just about anything, to save a franchise that looked like it was loosing it's spark, and nostalgia rage bait is a foolproof method... don't rate it, but i will allow it.

And as for Dune, don't know what you mean by it's going to be dark and loud but there isn't a reason why you can't see both, maybe not on the same day

Watching movies like these has shown me the light why Daniel Day Lewis aka DDL has long been considered one of the finest actors to have graced our screens.

Top tier film and that ending was one hell of a way to bring such ultimate climax.
I wasn't neccessarily a fan of Paul Dano's performance in here but he wasn't bad in this, even though I found the preacher boy character insufferable at some point.

Great storytelling piece about oil exploration and discovery in the US during the 20th century.

Movies like this is what reminds me how good cinema was compared to what we have to stomach in the 2020s.

There is a reason why DDL is the highest Oscar winner for make male lead. He is too good...shame he doesn't like acting anymore.

When I watched it I didn't bother to rate it because Nollywood normally Sabi fall hand. It's definitely because uzo went nude partially that was why he won the the movie won best actor and other awards beating to kill a monkey proving this modern Nollywood as a whole never really ready.

Damn, thanks for bringing this up my radar.
I watched the trailer and I think I posted it here a while ago and said to myself this is a must watch. Cos it was so promising and like you say, dialogue heavy storytelling is one of my favourite techniques to filmmaking.

I dunno how it totally disappeared off my sight after that time. I saw a few people praising it few days ago on Twitter, and I couldn't remember it was actually this movie despite the name sounding familiar. I just told myself it's the trend of hyping up films online only to become shite or tolerable when you embark.

And with 2026 presenting drab movies for the high seas lately I've been mostly disinterested in new films except highly anticipated movies— so this one failed to set up alarm bells on my radar.

Until I read your premise I remembered the trailer. Muchas gracias.

Tried joining the hype film gimmick and instantly got burnt back to back with Backrooms and Obsession 😩😩...so i took a step back..

Really good films are such a rarity these days, so i always appreciate the few.

Lmao.... I've watched Alien before but as a kid and could barely remember a thing.... It's the Predator films I remember vague things of not the earliest Alien. So, I don't really count them as what I've watched.

Similar situation with the Quentin Tarrantino Vampire film Sinners copied from.

Devil's Advocate I maintain isn't a great film.
It's a decent film at best.

lol I always find the argument flawed. A good film is a good film, no matter the era you see it in. I can cite so many examples. The first 2 Star Wars movies set in the 70s and 80s are still the best and most rewatched in the franchise, despite the obvious technological handicaps.

The Invite (2026)

Dark comedies are such a rarity these days, and this movie was like a breath of fresh air in the genre.

An embattled couple invites their new neighbours over for what seems like a normal dinner, but it quickly delves into a swingers’ party, with everything on the table, from pegging to bi-curiosity and whatnot.

The awkwardness of the attempt is where the movie shines. It is relatable, funny, and surprisingly emotional as they soon realise their relationship might be on very thin ice. Because if four people can’t comfortably swing, even when all of them are consenting, then what exactly does that say about the relationship?

The movie is basically one scene with four cast members, so you’d know it’s a heavily dialogue-driven movie, and I can’t stress enough how these kinds of movies are my bread and butter.

Special praise for Seth Rogen. This is the best I’ve seen him act. Like, this is Knocked Up (2007) Seth! Like pre-joint-obsessed Seth. He was genuinely funny, not doing too much, whilst staying grounded in the complexity of the situation.

Olivia Wilde’s career as a filmmaker might have taken off. After the disaster that was Don’t Worry Darling (2022), this was a perfect comeback. Besides directing, she delivered on the acting as a coitus-starved and slightly mentally unstable housewife.

Penélope Cruz was the architect of the supposed four-way tàtàtàtà, and she fit the part, perfectly. Her body and face card will never, ever decline!

This eclipses The Drama (2026) as my favourite drama of the year, and quite possibly one of my best films this year.

Top, top-shelf film.

Private detective Jake Gittes hired by a beautiful socialite to investigate her husband's extra-marital affair, Gittes is swept into a maelstrom of double dealings and deadly deceits, uncovering a web of personal and political scandals that come crashing together.


Got a chance to see Jack Nicholson much younger than I've seen him in films. Seems dude has had his quality, touch of dynamism and aura for a long time in the acting industry.

One of the best top shelf whodunnit movies I've ever watched. Suspense from start to finish. While you might feel you could guess what comes next or who does what, it comes up with another twist and turn of events to spin you away from your original ideas and suspicions.

Roman Polanski— one of the favourite piece of sh!te director who Twitter peeps loves to dunk on for his shitty character and moral compass, he actually did create a masterpiece. One that securely keeps his name or movie amongst the best films of all time.

You have been on an amazing run of oldies, recently maaan...keep at it.👍🏿

Colours of Fire (2025).

Colours of Disaster.!

One of my major rifts with modern Nollywood flicks is how, for all the razz and dazzle they think they are capable of, the stories are still weak, poorly written to a fault, undermining whatever progress they think they are making. I saw the trailer for this last year, and I was on the edge. On paper, it promised a proper mythology and fantasy tale mixed with technical and visual brilliance. After seeing it now, I would like to say: it failed, almost spectacularly, at both.

Let me get this out of the way: I think a large part of this movie, if not 100% of it, was the work of generative AI, which is bad in itself. I probably think they used some non-paywalled, low-tier one.

The plot was simple but logical to some extent. Two tribes, Blue and Red, are divided by myths and fear. When Blue warrior Akinbode is sent to kill a supposed monster, Moremi, he discovers the real enemy is misinformation and the lies sustaining their hatred, with Moremi becoming the bridge between the two worlds.

However, the film was more interested in visual spectacle to an annoying degree that the story was relegated to the background and the characters treated like an afterthought.

As Nollywood begins to gain the attention of global film distributors, their budgets become higher, and they feel they have to flex those budgets by using sophisticated VFX, animation, etc., while still neglecting the core, which is the story. They think a visually pleasing film means Nollywood has finally arrived on the world stage, forgetting that cinema is art first, before anything, and the core of that art is a proper script. Everything else builds from there.

The cast gave a below-par performance, to say the least. And this isn't entirely their fault because the filmmaker basically said, "Hey, the audience is here for the visuals, so just wing it." 😩

I actually think Uzor Arukwe should take a break, go see his family, or better still, touch grass! He blew up from a YT flick, and since then, filmmakers want to put him in every flick, whether he is a fit or not.

Osas Ighodaro as Moremi was a confusing character, which matched the haphazardness of the film. She could be bursting with joy one minute and muted with restraint the next, for no apparent reason. It looked like her first time on set.

For all the technical brilliance this film thinks it achieved, none of it wowed me. I am a motion designer and sometimes shadow as a film/video editor, and there is something called "over-editing," and it shows here. In an attempt to prove a point with the visuals, they over colour graded and over-saturated everything, and the whole thing looked like a mess.

The filmmaker, Niyi Akinmolayan, is an animator, graphics and visual artist whose early works weren't commercially successful, but they showed good glimpses of how VFX in Nollywood might look down the line. But in this film, he forgot all his training and behaved like a man with a huge hammer where everything around him looked like a nail.

It brings me to my most distasteful part of the entire thing: the overuse of generative AI. It's like Niyi's Claude sub had a few days left to run and he wanted to max it out. 😒😒

The beast teased as the main villain was so badly AI-generated, I just burst out laughing. 😩😂 Like, what are we even doing here?! The straw that broke the camel's back was when they infused actual AI-generated visuals with A-roll live-action shots. I will place both screenshots below, and at first glance, you'd think they were from different motion pictures.

It neatly sums up how this movie tried to chase visual spectacle and set a leading legacy for these kinds of films in the industry, but it never seemed to get out of its own way.

They had the audacity to tease a Part 2.

Naahh.

Funke Akindele has once again baited me with gimmick 😩 and teased one of these supposed Nollywood blockbusters, out like clockwork in December. And Inshallah, I will still be there, like I have been for the past two years, for her past two blockbusters.

But wallahi, I can't state enough how Nollywood stresses me, mannn.

Like, can they actually get a flawless blockbuster so I can brag?? Fgsss.😩😩😩

lol..no vex, she's obviously a good actress, but it comes with a caveat that doesn't sit right with me. The performance of her, I have truly liked was in "The Queen's Gambit", every other one from there on, has little or no variation, just one emote and incapable of range 👀😩

The Bear Season 5 (2022–2026)


Final Season… Final Form… Final Serve.


There is this phenomenon I have come to know whilst consuming media all these years, and I have come to term it the “Overachiever’s Curse.”

Like, an artist makes an album so good, proper “rent was due” level, and you just know they are never hitting those heights ever again. Not that their art diminishes, but they have made something so pure and divine that you just know it was a one-off.

When Lorde released her debut album, Pure Heroine, in 2013, it was revolutionary. Everything else she has made since gets compared to that, and none has quite measured up. Or when Jon Bellion released "The Human Condition" in 2016, for the first time in ages, I came across an album with literally unskippable tracks. And since then, you know the story. Wizkid moved into "mature men Afrobeat level" and released "Made in Lagos" (2020), first listening, and i was like, naahhh, this Ègbon is never making any project better than this, and which has been largely true 👀

The Bear Season 2 [/i]is genuinely one of the most profound seasons of a TV show I have ever seen, so my fear was: after giving me “[i]Forks” and “Fishes,” how will they ever top this?

Seeing the final season now, they never did. suffering from immense success if you will, but it is still TV serial royalty.

It seems like a lost art now for TV shows to return with a new season every year, but The Bear delivered a fresh season almost at the exact same time every June, since 2022. And they had already won me over with that singular act.

The final season opens with what looks like the final day for "The Bear", both figuratively and literally. Carmy has already revealed his decision to leave the restaurant and stop being a chef altogether at the end of S4, and the season is about him, and everyone around him, coming to terms with that decision.

There is a line from S4E2, when Nat tells Carmy that it is okay to actually walk away from something you love deeply, and that the important thing is that you are capable of that love in the first place.

And I think that's the most important lesson of the show.

Carmy loved cooking and being a chef, obviously, but it came with so much extra baggage: the weight of living up to his brother, a lot of family trauma, and everything else that came with it. That's why, when the show was tagged as a comedy all these years, I was always baffled. From S1 to S3, Carmy was miserable as hell! 😩 But immediately he decided to take a step back, he became calmer.

And that is the point: you can love something that deeply and still be able to let it go.

The cast of this show were phenomenal, and I loved how the writers continued to shine the spotlight on the side characters, so that the show wasn't just all about Carmy.

I may never be sentimental enough to make a “best shows of all time” list. There are just too many dynamic variables. But there are some shows I watch where I feel a shift. Something changes that I can't fully describe, It's like some other door opens!

I have a list for these kinds of shows:

Succession. Scrubs. The Office. GOT. AOT.

When I think of these shows now, I think of The Bear.

No gainsaying it, I am going to miss this show.

I am super thankful for five excellent seasons, and Carmy's healing journey coming full circle was the finest place to leave it. No dilly-dallying, no extending it further for the bare sake of doing it.

I think other shows these days should take a cue.

I saw it but it's still ass, watching that compared to watching the full 720p with the best possible audio versions spoils the whole experience of watching a Nolan film. If you decide to watch the clearer version later on, it'll just spoil the whole experience for you

I would want to say this as politely as i can, you are speaking from a very previleged place, am in these streets and i know what is HD to people and that was pretty close to, if not it...the concept of 1080p and 4K UHD is alien to many people, they simply can't tell the difference, but in their minds, see that leak, they know they have seen "The Odyssey" (2026) and everything you thought you saw at an IMAX screen, they saw it too...the premium experience, you'd want to think is the difference, is an expensive luxury they can gladly do without.

And various leaks have been flooding the Internet since it got released, and only this warranted this exposure and long discourse... makes you wonder why 🤔

It is a public forum for goodness sake, if i can't "speak freely" whilst maintaining simple decency, then I don't know what we are doing here.

I'd like to think you are closer to the owner or at least closer to some mods..so please get this message across to them...If this place is going have so many guide rails, then the least they can do, is to make a them well known, not let everyone just blindly posting and get clamped and you don't even know what for.

He isn't infallible as this film would suggest. In these perilous times, i have come to expect anything. I firmly believe now, that a good filmmaker can make a bad film, and vice versa.
