Beorn: The Shining - maybe if I'd watched it in the 80s and not with a 20th century perspective/lens, I'd have found it interesting, intriguing and scary like most horror movies. The movie was unnecessarily long, with unnecessary long dialogues instead of cutting to the chase and getting down to the basics. The acting of Jack's wife was particularly uninspiring. I find the movie kinda childish. It didn't get my heart racing one bit till around the last 15 minutes of the film when Wendy started seeing ghosts and the flowing blood. I mean, it took over an hour for me to witness a real ghost action when the old woman and Jack kissed. I slept off last night while watching it after the Champions League final match. That's how boring I found it.
The Shining 3/10. Koice, this is the only taint in your list of wonderful suggestions. Be careful with old movies, they are like throwback photos and you know how they look compared to new advanced tech cams. |

Beorn: Ok, have you watched The Babysitter? It's a Netflix horror movie. In short, horror movies are not fantasy movies, right? So how are they logical?
Another one. Fast and furious, are they in sci-fi or fantasy genre? The answer is a fat no. So how come the cars were moving through air from one skyscraper to another in Fast Furious 7? Is that possible? But yet people are watching it till the end and gushing about how amazing it was even when they knew the directors are lying to us all. You see, if we are looking for logic, very few films are worth seeing. I said some action movies are fantasy where i mentioned fake stunts. For example, Fast and furious, everyone have this fantasy of racing with their car(s) at crazy speeds which was what the movie is based on. |
TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by oyetpel(m): 10:02am On May 21, 2018 |
Beorn: You're missing the whole point. The point I'm trying to make is both are fictions and not real. OK, since your problem is about the genre of fantasy being included, let's take it to another genre.
You've watched or heard about films like Rambo and Schwarznegger's Commando where a single person takes on a battalion of solders and wipes them out while not dying at the end. Please, care to explain how "logical" that sounds to you? Why haven't a single soldier killed all Boko Haram since it's logical in films?
What about Jet Li films where people fight in air, use knife to defend rain of arrows? Is that a fantasy genre too? But we all loved it. At the end of the day, they're all lies. All fictions. We just watched for fun. Koice your input is needed, come and weigh in on the matter. |
TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by oyetpel(m): 9:57am On May 21, 2018 |
Beorn: Oyetpel, what about Brad Cooper's Limitless? Is that drug real? Is the movie a fantasy too? Yet we enjoyed it. The point is all those films are fake, they're fictions. Limitless is a fantasy movie. Most sci fi movies are fantasy. That drug have altered normal human behaviour giving him a superhuman mind, so it has crossed the line to a fantasy. |
TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by oyetpel(m): 9:30am On May 21, 2018 |
Beorn: Revenge and BP are both fiction and not real life story. Black Panther was pushed off a cliff in a human state and yet miraculously survived, got rescued by a wandering rival tribesman and stayed in a state of coma till healed by a magical flower. Both films are fictions whether fantasy or not. The entertainment level is what will differ due to individual choices. Don't confuse yourself. Do you want to compare say, 24 hours series to Agents of shield? Black Panther is a fantasy movie that involves superheros with superhuman powers. Did revenge characters have superhuman powers? So things like vibranium, purple leave can't find it's way into a movie that deals with realities of normal human beings. Genres like fantasy, sci fi, sometimes action movies can't be taken seriously because of fake stunts, supernatural, effects in them. But a movie like Den of thieves, romance movies, comedy, drama are films that are logical and deal with realistic actions and behaviours. |
TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by oyetpel(m): 8:47am On May 21, 2018 |
Beorn: If we are to follow your line of thought, then no film is worthy of finishing. You watched Black Panther to the end, right? Well, you'd have quit from the beginning because they took us for fools.
Wakanda does not exist. None of the characters exists. Vibraniun is a lie. The flower that automatically heals people does not exist. There's no real recorded of the fight scenes in Tokyo. There no human that can climb buildings or survive bullet shots wearing one imaginary Vibranium vest.
So, Films are fictions. Even the ones based on real events are garnished with some acts or storyline that never happened to add a bit of flavour to it. I have not watched revenge, but you can't conpare it with Black Panther. BP is fantasy, revenge is not so they are suppose to be factual and logical to nature. |

TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by oyetpel(m): 7:57pm On May 16, 2018 |
koice: While you're certainly right to some degree, you generalized. Lemme show you how.
Tv shows come in many forms: Dramas, reality tv shows, sitcoms, soaps, miniseries, and documentaries. Now, dramas can be classified into 2: Serial and procedural. In serial, every episode is linked to each other, held together by a common plot, whilst in procedural, each episode has it's own plot and not always linked.
Now in my experience, serial drama tend to have shorter seasons, one or two writers, which helps to facilitate consistency and fluidity between episodes, effectively eliminating filler episodes, protracted and convoluted plotlines. Quality content is hence achieved. Serial dramas are monopolized by premium cable giants like HBO, Showtime, FX and lately, streaming mediums like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime.
Procedurals have longer seasons, multiple writers, which can lead to inconsistencies between episodes, protracted, fillers and convoluted plots. NBC, CW, FOX, ABC and CBS (the big networks) are the chief proponent of this quantity over quality mode of tv entertainment.
To address the emboldened, when you talked about that, you were only talking about the big Network tv shows, not the premium cable variety. The later is quality over quantity whilst the former is quantity over quality. When I said tv shows have superior character development over movies, I was using cable's version of drama as my model of excellence.
To conclude, you shouldn't generalize on certain things, because there are a lot of moving parts going behind the scene you may not be aware of. I still maintain my stance that most tv shows either serial or procedural, they all fill their shows with unnecessary scenes to waste time to prolong the series. Nigeria are now becoming knowledgeable, before we all take in these shows hook line and sinker. But if you check the series thread, you will read people saying, this or that should have ended because they feel the show have climax. OR people saying they have stopped watching so and so shows because they are starting to decline in their thrills. |
TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by oyetpel(m): 11:00am On May 16, 2018 |
koice: It is. When something is 2hrs+, character development don't have the luxury to drag. A talented writer working with a talented actor can get the most out of a character, but it's incomparable to a tv show variance. Yes i know, but tv shows seems to drag on so as to keep it running, so they start adding unnecessary scenes and storylines. Which makes one feel disconnected from it. |
TV/Movies › Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by oyetpel(m): 10:31am On May 16, 2018 |
koice: Don't you feel rushed whenever watching a movie? Because of the time constraint involved, movie characters goes through a comically rushed development sequence that serves to not only alienate the audience, but make the plot feel kind of half-assed. By contrast, longer plots in tv shows leave ample room for characters to maneuver at a more steady pace, hereby, creating a feeling of intimacy with their audience. Meaning, the viewers can become far more invested in tv show characters than movie characters. Character development in movies are not rushed, it only leaves one to decipher the character's arc. |

dealtinate: Yup. Better character development, continuity, longer plot, better storytelling, more relatable characters and flexibility are some of the many reasons I would rather watch a tv show than a movie in my spare time. I don't think tv series have better character development because of longer plots. The longer plots create room for rubbish script scene fillers, which is what led the to fall of Designated survivor. |
