PoliticsRe: Pantami Reconciles El-rufai And Gov. Uba Sani At Funeral by pak: 10:18pm On Mar 30
I am following you now because of this fantastic analysis you just did.
On point, it was just playing to the gallery

festacman:
This was purely playing to gallery by Pantami. This was a mockery of reconciliation. It was an abuse of solemn moments of burial and mourning. It showed lack of emotional intelligence.

El rufai is bitter about what he considers betrayal from Uba Sani. He trusted Uba Sani like a son. He was one of his confidante. Therefore, it will take more than a casual graveyard handshake for him for forgive. Forgiveness is not a flimsy thing. It takes willpower and deep inner pain for an offended to TRULY forgive especially when betrayal is involved.

Besides, if Uba Sani considered what he did as betrayal, he wouldn't have waited for El rufai's mother to die in order to reach out to him. But of course, it is obvious, he sees what he did to El rufai as taking his opportunity or perhaps as simply act out-politicking another politician.

I hope she consistently improves to achieve her goal of becoming Nigeria's first GM.

I am hoping to attend this year's NFOC - any other person planning to attend too

Car TalkRe: Which Car Can I Get With ₦3.5-4M? by pak: 1:47pm On Mar 12
Don't let people here discourage you, I know someone who got a good Nigerian used 2008 fairly used Camry about 2 months ago for 5 point something and by and large the car has been of good use (of course the little repairs here and there you will expect of a typical Nigerian used cars)
Your current budget is not too far off, do not let the naysayers discourage you.

However, most first time buyers do not realise that the cost of procuring the car is only the first half of the story.
maintaining a car, especially if it is not new and considering the crazy cost of fuel is also forcefully tug at your pocket.

You can wake up in the morning joyfully and without warning before the end of that same day, you can be facing repairs that might cost you over a 100k

PoliticsRe: Again, Dangote Refinery Hikes Petrol Price To ₦1,175 by pak: 3:22pm On Mar 09
nairalanda1:
The problem is debt.

Our budget is pegged to the price of oil. Most of the time, oil is never high enough to adequately fund the budget. As a result, borrowing results (and I am not talking about benchmarks set by government...even with those , government has to borrow).

When oil price is low, debt grows. By the time oil prices rise again, the debt has to be settled and serviced first before anything else...so anyone expecting appreciation of naira and dwindling costs should really forget about it.

Remember also that we used to use forex to subsidise the strength of the naira? Not anymore...so the naira would still be bad. The only way to have a strong naira is by selling manufactured stuff the world needs...which is how the economy of strong nations works.
Thanks for your response.
But I'll say you are partly correct on both.
On debts, budgets even the part that involves debt settlements are based on benchmarks. Anything higher than those benchmarks would be considered excess to expected supply. unless you want to argue that crude prices before now have been largely below the benchmarks- so this increase in price is balancing out but seriously, I don't think that's the case.

Tthe concept of defending the naira, Now exchange rates are ideally supposed to be set by the forces of demand and supply, sort of seeking an equilibrium point. The concept of defending the naira comes from cases where a Govt chooses to provide FX below market prices from reserves or excess supply. Like Emefiele and Bubu did throughout their time.

Lowering fx rates due to an upshoot in fx supply is not defending the naira. This aligns with the fundamentals of how exchange rate work.

Thanks for your insight though
PoliticsRe: Again, Dangote Refinery Hikes Petrol Price To ₦1,175 by pak: 3:03pm On Mar 09
This defies logic.

Petrol Prices should stay the same - hang with me.

Higher Crude prices mean more dollar inflow for FG, which should directly impact the supply of FX and bring dollar prices down.
This should also imply lower operational costs for the Dangotes and suppliers and they should balance out.

Yeah, I know we all know economic calculations in Nigeria usually defy logic

Foreign AffairsRe: Several US Bases In Kuwait, UAE, Qatar And Bahrain Under Attack By Iran by pak: 3:23pm On Feb 28
Botragelad:
Israel and the US have a clear plan: Target and wipe out key people and structures in Iran with precision. Iran, acting like a typical weak terrorist regime, always picks the easy, useless path just to keep their propaganda bots fed.
All Iran does is launch weak attacks on random buildings with zero real gains, while their own top officers keep getting taken out one by one.

How does that help their cause at all?
Israel and the US could bomb the the entire country for a full week if they wanted, no real air defenses left, no Russia or China jumping in to save them, no Hezbollah, no Taliban, nobody. So many high-level Iranian Islamic officials have already been eliminated, but they still keep pumping out the same propaganda lies for their supporters. Lol
I somehow suspect (though not completely sure) that Iran intentionally make this baseless responses to achieve two contradictory goals - to not really anger or provoke the US to worse escalation and at the same time not appear completely weak

FamilyRe: How Divorce Affects Children In The North (video) by pak: 9:50am On Feb 25
AdolfHitlerxXx:
Divorce culture in the North is crazy. Especially in Kano.

Saw men divorce their wives over tea being too cold. Talaq, Talaq and Talaq... You don land for your Papa house.

Only there will you see a man divorce a pregnant woman. She too as soon she can force the baby to wean, she can go and drop off the baby at their gate even with the maiguard!

Where I come from, you will be forced to stay with her at least till after she delivers.

In Kano, I know a rich man whose first 2 wives are safe because they are his cousins and the extended family wouldn't take it. The other wives 3 &4, soon as they get pregnant, they seem to irritate him because he divorces them. He's done this over 20 times. I know a Bauchi woman with 9 different husbands. 3 of them on the same street shocked

Divorce isn't stigmatized and women use their fathers names so it's easy to hide if you don't do your homework.

I was house hunting at a point and saw a very well furnished apartment. Was wondering about the brand new electronics when agent mentioned that it was a couple who married 3 months previously but before moving into the house, they had divorced.

Side-pieces aren't really permitted, you marry her in, unlike Southern men get away with. But Northern men will marry a specific lady simply to taste the sugar. 6 months after when she's shown she can't even lay the bed... She gets her 3 Talaqs.
People who have not spent time in this places might think you are exaggerating.

you see that Kano, the headquarters of divorce in Nigeria. Even fellow Northerners are hesitant to marry Men from kano because the perception is that they don't even regard it seriously. SOme of then marry women and dump them the way a southern man might pick girlfriends

Why can't we eliminate mosquitoes
They're actually important for the balance of the ecosystem.

Lots of small organisms in fresh water rely on mosquito larva for food and small fishes and small aquatic animals also rely on some of these organism for food. So you can see how the chain reactions go.

The option is often to etiher genetically engineer mosquitos to be purely rely on or prefer plant based diets rather than blood or engineer them not to carry the malaria virus

Jobs/VacanciesRe: Has Crossover Ever Invited You For An Interview? I Just Got An Invite by pak(op): 8:51am On Feb 25
michaelodafe:
Congrats on getting to that stage — Crossover can be real, but treat ANY invite like a phishing attempt until you verify.

Quick checklist:
1) Check the sender domain carefully (not just the display name). If it’s a weird misspelling / random gmail, be careful.
2) Don’t click any “login” links in the email. Instead go to the official site directly and sign in from there.
3) Nobody legit will ask you to pay for onboarding/training/interview.
4) If they ask for Telegram/WhatsApp chat immediately, or request personal docs too early, red flag.

Prep-wise: expect scenario questions + “how would you solve X” + deep dive into your previous work. Have 3–4 STAR stories ready (impact + metrics), and be ready to explain your decision-making.

If you paste the email domain (mask your personal info), people here can help sanity-check it.
Crossover is real and "not real".

Crossover is popular globally for recruiting tech talents. They pride themselves as selecting only the top 1% and have a stupendously high salary package. Go through Nairaland and so many Nigerians have worked there.
However, They have so many questionable practices that ensure most of their staff never stay their for long. Most people only spend months before they pack their bags despite the high pay.

And their interviews typically do not go the way you have mentioned - before you reach the interview stage you would have gone thru a series of grueling test and challenges (11 and 12 in my case) that can break the less talented or determined.

At the interview level, they are more concerned about tech fit and culture fit.

But thanks for your response though.

CrimeRe: Plateau Government Arrests Pregnant Woman For Trafficking Three Girls To Ghana by pak: 8:35am On Feb 24
This seems to be quite common in Plateau state.
We had a month long program in Plateau in 2024 and within that period we had 2 people alleged to have moved to Ghana through an agent who promised them Jobs, enticing them by saying the exchange rate means Ghanaian jobs were going to be better paying than in Nigeria.

And this is not limited to just girls, young guys were also said to have been paying some tidy some for agents to help them relocate to Ghana. While there I even listened to a radio show addressing the issue and at that time Tudun Wada was claimed to be the epicentre

If you read the Hadith from the Apostle Paul, then it gives a general guiding principle that we can all work with and applies to many other scenario -
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient (profitable or proper): all things are lawful for me, but all things do not edify.
Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, OR DO, do all to the glory of God. But do not cause offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles nor to the Arabs,
