Business / Should I Sue? Legal Advise Needed Please by Palaver: 10:42am On Sep 27, 2018
I was introduced to palm credit (a micro scale lending company) and I took a loan of three thousand naira which I paid back.
Shortly after, I was in need of quick cash, so I patronized them again. However, due to serious cash crunch which I have experienced lately due to decline in my business activities, I defaulted in the repayment of the loan for thirty days.

Before taking this loan, I read their terms and conditions carefully, and I understood that the punitive measure for late repayment was accrual of interest on the principal loan and also reporting to the National Credit Bureau. In terms of confidentiality of agreement, this is what is written on their site;
"When using Palm credit, your data is always secure. Our platform uses world-class standard security and encryption technology to protect all details. When you provide us with information, you can also be assured of your privacy - our loan agreements are always kept confidential. Palm credit never shares your information with third parties unless it is for dedicated business purposes, such as reporting defaulted loans to authorized credit bureaus. We do not sell your data or credit profile."

However, to my uttermost consternation, Palm credit started messaging my phone contacts (randomly) the following "Please inform (my full name) to settle loan repayment of eight thousand, seven hundred and thirty six naira as soon as possible else, actions will be taken against him. If in doubt, please call (my name) on (my mobile number)".

Three things were wrong here;

Palm credit broke our confidentiality agreement.

In a desperate move to embarass me, Palm credit inflated my loan repayment by over a hundred percent. When I checked to see the amount due for repayment, it was actually four thousand three hundred naira and not eight thousand seven hundred naira as claimed by Palm credit.

While using the Palm credit app on my device, Palm credit swept through my phone and copied my phonebook contacts with the callous aim of messaging them to embarass me.

I tried calling their customer care and they refused to pick. I also tried to speak with one of their agents on phone but she also declined to speak but instead ended the call on me severally after realising their foolishness.

I had intended to make the repayment next week as soon as my clients pay me for the previous work I have done for them but I have now decided that I will NOT repay that loan until Palm credit retracts their messages by apologizing to the random contacts they messaged from my phonebook.

I have contacted a lawyer and I will be suing the company for breach of confidentiality as contacting third parties apart from the credit bureau was not part of the terms and conditions made available on their site and app. This incident is a clear indication that these online lending companies (especially palm credit) cannot be trusted with your information (phone contacts, BVN, and account details). They are rogues!

you are right. Its upfront they pay and last i heard from the last intake...entry level upfront was about 4m after confirmation. Salary was about 300k per month(basic plus meal allowance). Not sure if its still same or will be reviewed by 2018 but those figures show why its like blood and sweat to get in there. Again, That is what i heard from last intake..i don't have further info about salary scale. If entry level gets that, you know EH will def be getting more. Seasons greetings..
Bless you Tami. I was doubting the 2.4m figure earlier stated. I have it in good authority that entry level at NCC earns N220 and annual upfront of 4.6m. How then can DPR entry level earn lesser being one of the highest revenue generating agency of government?

The third person during my interview sat adjacent to me at quite a distance from where I was sitted. I spent about 30 minutes and it was really interesting. However, the woman (who I believe is from FCC) wasnt absolutely silent as she spoke to me thrice during the interview and even offered me a valuable advise. Hoping for the best!

Is CONTENDISS under ministry , agency or parastatal

So are you saying for a graduate who just got employed in a federal school of medical lab technology under GL 7 Step 11 the person will earn less than 90k a month
Is there any different between an agency and parastatal? Parastatals are extra ministerial bodies or agencies of govt. The Fed. Ministries do not use contendiss but conpss. Some health and educational training institutes (more like parastatals) use contendiss. The board of an agency together with the management determines the salary structure to be used after consultation and lobbying with Ministry of Finance, National Assembly and NSIWC.

Are you surprised about the figures? You guys glorify the civil service too much. CONPSS used to pay civil servants in the ministries is worse. A BSc/BA graduate is placed on GL 08 S2 with a total gross per annum of just a little above N700,000. After tax, pension and nhis deductions, the monthly net is below N50,000.

I see a lot of speculations in here, well DPR is trying to work out easier ways or measures as to how the interview should go. Guess they don't want it to be as clumsy and tight as the last interview(2012). There would be different interview centers, as staff are already working that out now, but what I do not know is whether or not they would give stipends to those coming from outside Lagos or generally as NNPC would usually do. The last interview was conducted in a building with about 3 to 5 different Interview panels, but it's not going to be the case this time around.. And just so you all know they are not taking 300 or 400 or 500 as most pple talk or think, it's 750 in all (250 OND's and 500 GT's and EH's)...
I am not sure of what to say about those with portal closed, some got msg/email, some didn't and yet the portal is still opened (personally I did not get the msg/email and my portal is very much alive) so what do we say about that? Something about this whole process still remains shrouded in secrecy,(even to most dpr staff) I guess you should wait for the invites to start rolling out first then ur status would be known. It's better to wait, stay mute, than to just give yourselves HBD as a result of speculations.

Only about one tenth will remain on this platform when the interview invites start coming in. Someone here said they shortlisted 3500 pple for the interview, I laugh, if only you knew(have you heard of STANDARD MERIT)? you should take a stroll to their headoffice to get clarification on that.Do you really think they have that strength? well, do not loose hope, stuffs happen and things change. Who knows you could be favored.God has the final say. Good morning.
I'm compelled to quote you as it seems you're one of the very few who knows what's up as regards this recruitment. I mentioned earlier in this thread that DPR intends to recruit over 700 staff. This isn't a speculation or suggestion as I saw a copy of the request memo they sent to FCC. The figures were put at 700 and something (not exactly 750 I saw, though I'm not disputing your figure as they may have finally settled for that). As per the portal issue, many will be surprised. The fact some of us dont come here to speculate doesn't mean we are ignorant of certain things. I knew as far back as March 2016 that DPR will recruit in October same year and I mentioned it with one of my popular alternate monikers here on Nairaland. The whole process is shrouded in high level secrecy and only few people can confidently tell you the state of things. That said, I repeat that as at today 02nd of November 2017, everyone who wrote the aptitude test stands a chance, only the interview mail will seperate the successfuls (which includes those on merit, connection and God's favour) from others. Thanks!

Career / Re: Nigerian Public Service Salary Structures? by Palaver: 9:39am On Nov 02, 2017
For CONTENDISS 07, the annual gross is N983,653. Allowances (excluding training or official trips) are already included in this figure.

Also, there is a difference between GL 07 STEP 2 and GL 07 STEP 11. I assume you mean the former as you appear to be a fresh graduate. The way the salary structures are formed, a worker on 08 s 11 may earn higher than one on 09 step 2.

I dont know what you mean by "various salary paying bodies". But nothing of such exist. What we have is the NSIWC (the salary and income regulatory body) and different government agencies with various "salary structures". Some are funded by the national treasury i.e conpass, conpss, conposs, conhess, contiss, conraiss, contendiss, conafss, contopsal etc, some are self funded e.g NCC, NNPC, NIMASA etc and some are on special salary structure but funded by the national treasury e.g DPR, NIGCOMSAT, SEC etc. I hope this helps.

Education / Re: 5 Most Common Nigerian Pidgin English Words and their Origin by Palaver: 7:42pm On Nov 01, 2017
Loluores:
Lol, funny thread. But make I just use dis time take clarify some language tins for una (no mind me oh, I be real boti but make I try speak small pidgin).

Anyways though, the vocabulary of the Nigerian Pidgin is predominantly from English. A number of words come from different languages across Nigeria though, which means that you probably have some words in your own dialect you use when speaking pidgin. An Igbo person is more likely to use "Nna ehn" than anybody else. Or a Hausa would say "dat one, ba?" Warri will say "Guy kpom, I hol bar, mek we just va go lanson."... don't ask me what that last sentence means oh grin

Some other words were introduced into pidgin from other languages like Portuguese, Dutch, French, even from Saõ Tomé, way back when the language was developing during like 5 or 6 centuries from now due to contact with different people that landed on our shores from Lagos to Warri (I hail una oh, the headquarters of Pidgin grin) to PH to Calabar. The origin of some of them is quite interesting:

Pikin is from Portuguese peqeño (little, small, little kid)

Va or Vamoose is probably from Spanish (or should I say Portuguese, I'm not so sure) ¡Va! or ¡Vamos! (go, let's go)

Boku is from French beaucoup ((very) much/many)

Sabi is from Portuguese saber (to know)

The older pidgin word palaver is probably related to Spanish palabra and the Latin parabola (word, story, parable)

The words yeye and kuku (or kukuma) in pidgin are of Yoruba origin, that is undisputable. It's a wonder you guys even debated that one at all. At least, the way yeye is pronounced is phonologically close to Yoruba.

The Yoruba word yẹ̀yẹ́ is a noun which is sometimes used as an adjective to qualify other nouns. It means unseriousness or frivolous amusement. It could also be derogatory, with meanings like nonsense, rubbish, useless, silly/ridiculous. It's definitely not the same word that you find in some Yoruba names nah, how will that even be possible? grin The tone marking is different as you can see in a name like Adéyẹyè which is from Adé yẹ oyè as someone has already explained above.
The argument that yeye is from an Igbo word eyiye that looks like it has a similar meaning to the Yoruba word yẹ̀yẹ́ easily lends fuel to our tendencies in Nigeria here to start stupid tribalistic I-claim-dis I-claim-dat fights. There's no point in doing that. I don't speak the Igbo language. But it's a well known fact that both languages are linguistically related. A number of words in both languages are cognates; they are related. Such as the word for cat (olóńgbò, ólógbo), or the sentence "I am in the house", in both languages: "M nọ̀ nímé ụ́lọ̀" = "Mo wà nínú ilé". Whether yẹ̀yẹ́ and eyiye are indeed cognates is for the linguistics scholars to confirm, I simply don't know.

Kúkú is what is called a pre-verbal adverb in Yoruba, which is an adverb that is located before the main verb. Other Yoruba examples include tètè (early, quickly), ṣẹ̀ṣẹ̀ (just (with reference to time)) and kọ́kọ́ ((at) first). See how these words have two identical syllables just like kúkú has. Kúkú doesn't have one single meaning. Some of its meanings include: rather, anyway, indeed, just (not referring to time in this case), even, etc... depending on context. It has more or less the same meanings in pidgin.

Una is straight from the Igbo second-person plural subject or object pronoun únù, meaning you (all), no need to even debate that one.

Make una no allow dpr rest o. More people should call their helpline to make enquiry. The more calls they receive, the more feedback they will give to the HR or management. That should give them an idea that the recruitment process is dragging for too long. Budget cannot be the reason for the delay, then what is?
