Urban planning (urban, city, and town planning) is a
technical and political process concerned with the use of land and design of the urban environment, including
transportation networks, to guide and ensure the orderly

Many of our planners still depend on analogue or paper maps while few have upgraded to using one of the numerous AutoCAD land development software. While this is a welcome development, there is the need to look into the future and by future I mean what other countries are already implementing. Intelligent planing of our cities is intrinsic
to the development of our nation. Ofcourse the AutoCAD brings about a digital outlook to the planing world, Yes, AutoCAD makes drawing easier. As a GIS expert, I agree! I have used the AutoCAD software severally and its awesome but GIS is a system, it gives your work a spatial reference. You can stay in your office and measure the distance between a particular bank to the nearest filling station anywhere in the world without blinking an eye. You can run a cluster analysis to show you the spatial distribution of let's say filling stations in a particular area ( filling stations aren't even meant to be in some areas) a buffer which is commonly referred to as setback can be analyzed to give firsthand information on how buildings are located along our roads or rivers. Network analysis will come in handy to predict Traffic flow and congestion. Apart from these very interesting analysis, GIS affords you a very robust database of all features that may or may not interest you as a planner. GIS gives you an edge, it helps you make intelligent decisions.

Yes sir, it is. Please read through the thread for one of my posts where I discussed AGIS in Abuja. I'm kind of busy presently but I promise to give you a run down very soon. I currently have a couple of Urban and Regional Planning students from FUTA and The Polytechnic Ibadan undergoing training in our office. GIS is basically for the Environmental Sciences but recently it is been employed in almost all spheres of life including Marketing Logistics.

I only created the thread to sensitize job seekers on how they can empower themselves with GIS. I did not make the thread about certification, I assume you must have gone through the thread but if not please do. Thanks once again.

Hello Mods, A few days ago, I created a thread to sensitize Nigerian job seekers on how they can be self employed using GIS. I made sure that the thread was devoid of any advert. Today I discovered that it has been moved to the cert and training section, please I want to know why the thread was moved because that movement has defeated the motive behind the creation of the thread. A very easy way to be either self-employed or even make extra cash either as a student or a worker is to master technical skills. These skills make you self reliant and releases you from that pool of the unemployed which you detest so much. I see as most graduates flock to job advertisement threads not minding if its real or not. Some even accept wages that remind you of the Roman empire slavery era. It is good to hope to work in blue chip coys, but we can't all achieve that dream! Think of what you can do for you self and your country, not just what your country can do for you.

If you are handling any project involving GIS or you intend to embark on one anytime soon, feel free to join this thread so we can all learn.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a system which collects and analysis spatially referenced data, to provide intelligent facts that aids decision making. Cannistra (2003) submitted that more than 95% of elements that affects human activities can be referenced to a particular location, this includes that you and I can only occupy a particular space on the earth surface at a given time and while we occupy the space, no one else can.
Think of it as an address that describes your house, only that GIS employs a more precise method- the use of co-ordinate systems. Co-ordinate systems are a combination of the lines of longitude and latitude that point directly to a particular feature on the earth surface. One major advantage that a GIS has over other mapping systems is the fact that it has a robust database capability.
Every feature has an attribute, think of it as the descriptive features that you possess. One can't just describe you as a boy or a girl, it has to be more a tall dark girl or a plump fair girl. When a decision maker queries the system for a specification that suits your description, you and others that match prop up. That is a simple GIS!
The system that powers your car tracking devices is a GIS, GIS is currently used to analyze flood patterns and avoidance, the military has now seen the benefits of GIS and are presently implementing it to combat insecurity in the north, the recent lagos state emergency response network is also based on a robust GIS.

Sir, I don't know of any in PH. I run a GIS firm that offers hands on training amongst other solutions in Ibadan. But if you stick with this thread, you might be able to learn a thing or two.

Why aren't you using satellite imagery, that way we can do some image processing using erdas imagine, ilwis or arcGIS 10. Are you going to determine vegetative cover extent or index.

For beginners, please get quality GIS training. It might cost you a small fortune and time on your path but I can assure you that you will be better for it. NGOs depend mainly on foreign finances and as such decisions must be based on facts that can add up. GIS is a technology based on locational analysis. Let me site an example of the ActionAid, its an NGO that involved in developmental projects. Most of their projects are borne out of information produced from a GIS. Questions like where is the best place to site a maternity centre, or a dispensary or an elementary school can be answered using GIS.

Get some video tutorials, or better still go for a customized training to brush you up. Never lose touch with GIS, it's here to stay!

Let me highlight some points just in case you haven't. Google earth imagery are very high resolution imagery that shows clearer pictures of the earth surface without further image processing. If you get the Google imagery of your area of interest, you will surely be able to differentiate a stream from a river.. I only advised that you get the imagery so as to guide you since your image isn't clear enough.

Thank you good sir, I decided to limit this thread to explaining how we can empower our youths with GIS and this is why I posted a link above to another thread where I give details about the technology. However with regard to your brilliant suggestion, I will shed more light on GIS.

Try to open the map in the corel draw environment and re- save using as a Bitmap format. If you are using the ilwis software, choose another of the jpeg formats available. If that doesn't work, concentrate and digitize your area of interest. You can download google earth imagery of the area to guide you better. I'll like to see some of your maps. Keep on using GIS.

@ jimikata, GIS can be used to monitor Nigeria's border but it will be much more effective if it is customized. Why I prefer the customized one is that whatever works fine for the custom service might fall short of the Nigerian immigration service requirement, however several GISs can be linked together if need be.
Let me make an example of a GIS customized for the custom service. Aerial photographs (snapshots of the earth taken from outer space) will be processed to determine the areas most susceptible to smuggling, the number of villages along the route (since some smugglers enjoy support from villagers) custom outposts can also be determined, even if the smugglers beat those outposts, their possible hideouts and routes can be detected.
All these and some other factors can be channeled to ensure safety in our border regions. Furthermore, in advanced climes, real time video links can be factored into the GIS to enhance performance. Web powered GIS can also be implemented to facilitate easy sharing of information among departments.
