Politics › Re: MC Tagwaye Resigns From APC And Joins SDP by papyjaypaul:
AMINDA:
Elrufai is not popular but the APC has expended all its arsenal trying to combat him for weeks, and he seems to be having the upperhand. He has single-handedly revived the opposition. Elrufai is doing exactly what he's supposed to do, taking the momentum off Tinubu's campaign in the North. The real traditional opposition figures have not even entered the conversation yet and APC is in disarray.
The most important thing you should take from this comment below is that 2015 leaked memo. I read it again today and it's now so obvious El Rufai has not done anything new. I urge you to read it and come back.
emkz:
In 2015, El Rufai was said to be a frequent visitor to the villa and was projecting himself as the de facto vice president. There was a rumour that Osinbajo had to assert himself and Buhari politely asked El Rufai to focus on his own state and leave Abuja administration to Abuja politicians.

Then a memo where El Rufai criticized Buhari's economic policies leaked. Does anyone think that document leaked without El Rufai leaking it himself?

I think El Rufai got spoilt when Obasanjo made him one of his closest ministers. He cannot function without being seen to be in charge.

Now that Tinubu decided it might be better to keep El Rufai at arm's length, El Rufai decided to take to the gutters to fight.

El Rufai has fought the following:

1. Atiku
2. Yar'adua
3. Tinubu, when he wanted to dislodge him as the fox of Lagos politics.
4. Buhari, when he called him "Pa Buhari" and advised him not to contest. It was curious he later worked to get Buhari elected.
5. Senator Jonathan Zwingina
6. Senator Ibrahim Mantu
7. Senator Suleman Hunkuyi, for which Buhari named him "Bulldozer"
8. Senator Shehu Sanni
9. Governor Uba Sani
10. PDP
11. APC
12. Nuhu Ribadu
13. Tinubu
...and so many others

El Rufai is an intelligent man, but he lacks political shrewdness and lacks the ability to plan in secret. He could have been seen as a potential president if he matched his intelligence with the charisma of Yar'adua, the maturity of Nuhu Ribadu, the wisdom of Buhari, the bridge-building capacity of Tinubu, the humility of Jonathan, the craftiness of IBB, the silence of Abacha, and the diplomatic skills of Obasanjo. Obasanjo started demonstrating his brashness after his time in power.

Controversy can only take him so far.

Politics › Re: Countries Where Pornography Is Banned Or Heavily Restricted by papyjaypaul:
Zionmdde:
Oga why the focus on children? It's difficult for you to see child pornography on the surface. You have to develop the desire first, then go into indepth search for it. So in that case, blame your desires in the first place.
That's not true. You don't need to go that deep to find children. You are also writing like everyone on the internet is normal. If people can post on Nairaland that they want to sleep with married women, some who are older than they are, how do you think everyone on the internet is normalhuh There are some schools that ban mobile phones in Nigeria but you have parents who give children mobile phones and you say this? Didn't we see that young girl who recorded herself having sex on the internet? Was it an adult that recorded it?

Don't talk about desires because the cleanest person can get tempted the more they see things.

I am not a fan of Tinubu and I don't support the scheming to remove deputies.
But a deputy governor is part of the executive. There can always be disagreements within the executive.
However, a speaker is head of the legislature, a different arm of government and should be insulated from the influence of the state governor, all things being equal.
We know this checks and balances is not for the good of the people unfortunately. If they allowed democratic institutions to grow, EVERYONE will benefit from it but they are only after selfish interests, which can go far less

Kajaard:
Apt and succinct response. It's been a very long time I read a post on nairaland that made sense. Respect cool
Very good post by emkz. In fact, I went back to read the memo and noticed the following

In the memo, El-Rufai had posited that, “the Lagos group more or less led by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu is the most organised and proactive. This group made a key contribution in our electoral success, but like all groupings it naturally exaggerates its role in order to increase its influence in the coming administration. The group will use the media to promote its own “GMB Boys” or suggest “Northerners” of their choice that they think would do their bidding.

“Some already are boasting that they will choose the next petroleum minister and the executive leadership of the NNPC. They will seek direct control or great influence over key economic portfolios, including agencies involved in revenue generation (NNPC, FIRS, Customs, etc.) law enforcement (Attorney General, EFCC, etc.) and financial services regulation (CBN, SEC, PenCom, etc.). This group will seek an alliance with some GMB family members to help strengthen their pre-eminent position in these areas.”

The memo, according to some revelations that trailed it, was written by the Kaduna governor, and received by the President, sometime in 2015, before the nomination of ministers by President Buhari. Consequently, many of those who spoke with The Nation accused El-Rufai of fanning the ember of discord with his argument.
With this memo, you can call it a masterstroke that President Tinubu publicly begged him in Kaduna in public to work for him, put him in his campaign team (I remember when he said El Rufai was part of his team in Chatham) and then submitted his name for Minister, only for the security clearance to be used as a reason to deny him grin I have to applaud the President for this style even though I'm not his fan. Because if you listen to El Rufai's interview, he was almost going the route of the other guy, challenging the Presidency, "who's the Presidency?" They clipped him before the elections, after the elections and let him hibernate after ministerial screening. It's better to let the security clearance speak to him than to tell him to his face and that is why he said he knows it is not the security clearance that cost him the Ministerial job.

I think they know what he wants, he likes to be a power broker. The President also has Wike on board, who people have said there will be a time they will fall out and we know who will fall harder between the two.

Acidosis:
The idea that his father might deserve whatever treatment he’s receiving today especially if he was an absent father doesn’t make sense. The majority of the people benefiting from Asake’s wealth today didn’t contribute to his success either.

The people who contributed to his success are his fans, who go all out to stream his songs and attend his shows. I’m not sure he’s helped any of these people either; instead, celebrities are often known for spending lavishly on the Sophia Lambos of this world.

Sometimes, you have to look beyond people’s failures and weaknesses. Sometimes, you repay the wickedness of the wicked with good deeds in the hope that they might repent.

If we all decide to help only those who contributed to our success, then even Asake might not be where he is to today.

Foreign Affairs › Re: Trump Vows To Retaliate EU 50% Tariff, Calls Union 'Most Hostile In The World" by papyjaypaul: 5:12pm On Mar 13, 2025
netmillionaires:
I have always said that minimum wage is an advantage. It is stupid countries with selfish leaders and citizens that are not making use of the opportunity. This is the babes of America.

Wages and salaries constitute about 70% of the cost of production. Increased wages mean a more expensive good. An American would rather spend $100 to buy 20 tees from China than use the same $100 to buy 5 tees produced in the US. Countries will continue to buy from China because they can afford it.

to sing tariff will mean that if Americans are buying a product made in China or Europe for $5, the goods will become expensive and Americans have to spend say $15 for the same goods. This will force American industries to start producing the goods. But since Americans won't accept low wages, the goods will still be costly but cheaper say $11. The Americans will complain about the rising cost of things and demand for an increased wage. If the is implemented, companies will complain again about increased cost of production and increase price again. And the cycle continues. The countries that are already complaining about the high cost of American goods will be forced further away.

If Nigeria is producing cars, the cars will be cheap and affordable even to the low income earners. All we do is assembling which means the high wages paid to high wage Americans and Europeans for produced parts have been factored into the cost.
Trump said the tariffs are temporary pain but I don't think so. The only reason why Tesla can sell is because America bans BYD. The only reason Apple can go up is because Huawei was banned. The only reason Facebook has freehand and they try to damage the reputation of TikTok is because one is from America and another is from China. The only reason Lenovo is popular is what you and I know. There are other factors but every country likes trade protection so that they don't become like Ukraine where America will tell you to say thank you.

China has competitive advantage because of their population and government policy. India took advantage of the IT industry and Nigeria can do the same thing if we have focused leadership. This is the only place I agree with Bill Gates who said Nigeria's greatest asset is its people. Give them work to do, japa will be japada. If other governments sustained what Obasanjo opened up, by now Nigeria will be a popular WFH destination but our financial system is compromised and we have weak regulations and the wrong people in government. Whenever they tout foreign investors, it is a mockery of our capacity. If you protect your people, they will gain from trade agreements.

Cost of food production is cheap in Nigeria but many things cannot allow us to feed ourselves and export crops for FX. All our leaders know is to buy houses and sell us to foreign exploiters.

And this is why China keeps winning US . Cheap labour, no stringent environmental laws and strategic devaluation of the china yuan. Also low tariffs that enables them to flood countries with all kinds of products killing off local industries. This is also why Nigeria is in the mess it is . Nigerians developed an addiction for foreign goods that helped to destroy our local markets . Something has to be done to remove that addiction. Especially in the critical industries of the country
💯

The average American will not work a low wage to produce clothes, or else the Unions will kick against it. It's exploitation in Asia, Africa and cheaper places but that's business for you. If Nigeria has 24/7 light today, it will be the next destination for this exploitation. We don't have light but see what the Indians, Chinese and Lebanese are doing with factories. The Panama Canal Trump is eyeing is already captured by China. America will lose because they have been comfortable with this lie and they also don't want migrants who can work cheap labour in USA. Democrats and their type have also wasted too much time on carbon emissions and climate change while China keeps producing to the high heavens. They prefer China to pollute their own environment while they save their own by taxing energy emissions and preventing production. Trump will make a fool of himself but it's a good call even if he fails. Let everyone start thinking about self sufficiency

Foreign Affairs › Re: Trump Vows To Retaliate EU 50% Tariff, Calls Union 'Most Hostile In The World" by papyjaypaul: 3:28pm On Mar 13, 2025
Trump will only stop when the Americans start feeling the impact of his tariffs. I understand what he's trying to do to make sure Americans only patronize made in American goods and services but you cannot isolate yourself from the world. Trade does not work that way. Trade works with partnership agreements.

There is a reason why it is cheaper to produce laptops, cars and other gadgets in China or Asia. Even clothes are made in Thailand, Indonesia and India because it is cheaper there. Can Americans afford their own products? E get why Apple moved production to China. We shall see.
