PoliticsSubsidy Removal Will Create Space For Development Spending — IMF by Paraman(op): 4:49pm On Jan 28, 2024
The International Monetary Fund has said that even though Nigeria and other low-income debtors have yet to request any debt relief recently, high debt servicing costs remain a growing challenge.

In a new report, the multilateral lender remarked that the good news was that there had not been any notable request by a low-income country for comprehensive debt relief since Ghana’s, more than a year ago.

On policy reforms aimed towards increasing revenue, the IMF commended Nigeria and three other countries for recent subsidy reforms that would create space for development spending.

It said, “Building resilience in the face of these trends requires countries to act. Some countries have made progress— for instance, Angola, The Gambia, Nigeria, and Zambia have taken steps to implement significant energy subsidy reforms to create space for development spending.”

It, however, expressed worry that many countries were lagging behind, especially in efforts to increase revenues, such as broadening the tax base, reducing tax exemptions, and increasing the efficiency of tax administration.

For instance, the typical Sub-Saharan African countries raised only 13 per cent of gross domestic product in revenues in 2022, compared with 18 per cent in other emerging economies and developing countries and 27 per cent in advanced economies.

“And those with high debt vulnerabilities can’t afford to wait. Policy reforms are needed to boost growth and capture more revenue from that growth, for instance, through tax reforms. This will directly improve countries’ key debt metrics and ensure they can avoid a costly debt crisis,” the report read further.

According to the Debt Management Office, Nigeria’s public debt profile increased to N87.91tn at the end of the third quarter of 2023.

In 2024, the Federal Government plans to spend N8.25tn on debt servicing. The figure represents 45 per cent of projected income and has drawn criticism from economic experts, including the World Bank which warned that unless drastic reforms are implemented, Nigeria’s debt service-to-revenue ratio would hit 160 per cent by 2027.

It stated financing pressures due to relatively high-interest payments and the pace at which low-income countries need to repay debt were straining budgets.

That, the lender said, prevented those countries from spending more on essential services or the critical investment needed to attract business, create jobs, improve prosperity, and build climate resilience.

The report read in part, “One important metric is the share of revenues the government collects from its population through taxes and other fees that go to pay its foreign creditors. While the scale of the burden differs greatly across countries, it’s generally about two and a half times higher than a decade earlier.

“This means for a typical low-income borrower the share has risen to about 14 per cent, from about 6 per cent, and as much as 25 per cent, from about 9 per cent in some economies. This is one of the key indicators used in the framework for assessing debt sustainability that signals a country might be at risk of needing financial support from the IMF or of missing a debt payment.”

It, however, expressed worry that many countries were lagging behind, especially in efforts to increase revenues, such as broadening the tax base, reducing tax exemptions, and increasing the efficiency of tax administration.

This your article shows you don't understand mathematics and analysis at all.
Tinubu should be the one begging Peter obi to step down.
As it stands the presidential elections have been divided into 2 different sets of people, Obi(young people and Christians) Atiku, kwankwanso and Tinubu (old people and muslims).
The north is now divided into Atiku and Tinubu
The south is Obi. The truth is Tinubu can't win 50% of the north. And he(tinubu) can't win without the south.
Worst case they scenario, they will be a run off.

You are naive politically and otherwise. Your little brain did not tell you that unlike the 1993 election where the two-party system was in place and was a two-horse race between NRC and SDP, which largely contributed to SDP victory, that it is not the same in the 2023 election.

The fact that you failed to tell yourself the truth that Atiku would do better than Tinubu in the entire North using your sentimental analogy, shows that you are completely naive.

The election will be Peter Obi's to lose, so he is winning by all indices available so far.
Tinubu defeated Atiku in the north west and north central

SportsJoshua To Earn No. 1 Ranking With Ngannou Win by Paraman(op): 11:43am On Jan 27, 2024
World Boxing Council president, Mauricio Sulaiman, has said that former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua will earn the WBC’s No.1 ranking if he beats Francis Ngannou.

However, Sulaiman insists a potential fight with Tyson Fury will likely have to wait as he is already committed to a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.

Joshua will enter the ring with Ngannou on March 8 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia in what will be his fourth fight in the space of 11 months after victories over Jermaine Franklin, Robert Helenius and Otto Wallin.

Ngannou will be competing in just his second professional boxing fight after narrowly losing to Fury on debut last October.

Joshua held the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO belts until he lost to Usyk in September 2021 and he has got his career back on track following successive defeats against the Ukrainian.

And Sulaiman says his rise to being No.1 in the WBC will be complete if he is victorious in March.

“Anthony Joshua was first ranked by the WBC when he started as a professional and then he kept moving up and was ranked inside the top five and then number 2 ranked when he received the opportunity to fight for another title (the IBF),” he told gambling.com.

PoliticsKeyamo Unveils N1 Billion Export Processing Center At Lagos Airport by Paraman(op): 11:28am On Jan 27, 2024
Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, inaugurated the N1 billion Export Processing & Packaging Centre (EPPC) at Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos, on Friday. The facility aims to enhance cargo exports.

Keyamo assured NAHCO PLC of continued support in the cargo export business, emphasising revenue growth.

The Minister noted that with advanced equipment and expertise, challenges in exporting perishable goods will diminish, including shelf life, temperature control, packaging, handling, and regulatory compliance.

Represented by FAAN’s Olubunmi Kuku, Keyamo encouraged stakeholders to utilize the facility.

He said, “In a world where revenue growth is key,I want to assure NAHCO that we will continue to support them in this and other ventures. It is my hope that exporters and other stakeholders will take full advantage of this facility to boost Nigeria’s export numbers, which will impact positively on our balance of payment position and strengthen the Naira.”

She highlighted FAAN’s commitment to promoting cargo development, forming a committee to address facilitation challenges, particularly in exports.

The Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development established the Cargo Services Directorate in FAAN to enhance freight services and foster innovation.

Kuku praised NAHCO Aviance’s leadership for their innovative approach and forward-thinking.

“I think it helps when an experienced business like yours sees the business sense in building a facility such as this to aid other businesses,” she said.

During the commissioning, Dr. Seinde Fadeni, NAHCO’s Chairman, expressed gratitude for the government’s support in easing business challenges.

He emphasised the importance of collaboration and thanked contributors for the project’s success. Fadeni urged the Federal Government to bolster NAHCO’s efforts in advancing Nigerian aviation.

In his words, “We have achieved this and the new task is to set a new goal. Our only request to the government on this occasion would be that; should we need your support in our quest to move aviation forward in Nigeria in our own little way, please be there for us.”

Fadeni emphasised NAHCO’s belief in Nigeria’s potential for food exports, stating, “We would need the government to give us all the support we need. The livelihood and indeed prosperity of many Nigerians depend on the export of perishables.”

He urged the federal government to convene stakeholders to propel the export segment forward and encouraged all involved parties to utilise the facility for export purposes.

Highlighting the significance of the new facility, he emphasised its stakeholder-centric design.

Indranil Gupta, NAHCO’s Group Managing Director, underscored the strategic significance of the facility, aiming to enhance Nigerian product competitiveness globally and create domestic employment.

The GMD emphasised that through streamlined export processes, adherence to strict packaging standards, and ensuring product quality, NAHCO enhances Nigeria’s product reputation globally.

Gupta stressed the significance of this endeavour, stating, “This is very important.” He further highlighted the Export Processing and Packaging Centre’s role in fostering skills development and empowering Nigerian youths.

Gupta underscored that the center embodies NAHCO’s commitment not only to business but also to socio-economic empowerment.

“As we commission this centre, we are embarking on a journey that not only strengthens our foothold in the global market but also contributes to the economic development of Nigeria. This facility is a symbol of our unwavering commitment to quality, efficiency, global standards, and customer satisfaction,” he said.

He mentioned that the EPPC provides office spaces for regulatory bodies and government agencies.

NAHCO PLC is committed to nurturing collaborative ties with cargo agents, valued clients of the facility.
He expressed gratitude to the government, regulatory bodies, and stakeholders for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in realising this vision. NAHCO anticipates ongoing collaboration for mutual benefit.
