Foreign Affairs › Saudi Arabia Plans To Allow Alcohol Sales To Non-muslim Diplomats. by Paraman(op): 3:04pm On Jan 26, 2024 |
Saudi Arabia plans to allow alcohol sales to non-Muslim diplomats for the first time, two sources familiar with the plan told AFP on Wednesday, modifying strict rules governing liquor in the conservative country. Alcohol has been banned in Saudi Arabia since 1952, after one of King Abdulaziz’s sons got drunk and shot dead a British diplomat. Alcohol has been banned in Saudi Arabia since 1952, after one of King Abdulaziz’s sons got drunk and shot dead a British diplomat. Under Saudi law, penalties for consumption or possession of alcohol can include fines, jail time, public flogging and deportation for foreigners. Alcohol “will be sold to non-Muslim diplomats” who previously had to import alcohol via a diplomatic pouch, or sealed official package, one of the sources said. Prohibition has been the law of the land in Saudi Arabia since 1952, shortly after one of King Abdulaziz’s sons got drunk and, in a rage, shot dead a British diplomat. Rumours have swirled for years that alcohol would become available in the Gulf kingdom amid a wave of social reforms introduced as part of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 reform agenda, among them the introduction of cinemas and mixed-gender music festivals. A Saudi government statement on Wednesday said authorities were introducing “a new regulatory framework... to counter the illicit trade of alcohol goods and products received by diplomatic missions”. The statement added: “The new process will focus on allocating specific quantities of alcohol goods when entering the Kingdom to put an end to the previous unregulated process that caused an uncontrolled exchange of such goods in the Kingdom.” The policy “will continue to grant and ensure that all diplomats of non-Muslim embassies have access to these products in specified quotas.” The statement indicated that not much would change immediately for the vast majority of Saudi Arabia’s 32 million people, who have few ways to imbibe unless they are willing to travel abroad. Beyond attending diplomatic receptions in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter, they can make homemade wine or turn to the black market, where bottles of whiskey can go for hundreds of dollars ahead of holidays like New Year’s Eve. Sensitive subject Under Saudi law, penalties for consumption or possession of alcohol can include fines, jail time, public flogging and deportation for foreigners. Last year, Saudi Arabia was granted hosting rights for Expo 2030 and the World Cup in 2034, further fuelling speculation that the alcohol ban might be lifted, or at least weakened with carve-outs in places like NEOM, a planned $500 billion futuristic megacity. Take international news everywhere with you! Download the France 24 app But given that alcohol is forbidden in Islam, the issue remains deeply sensitive in the country that is home to the religion’s holiest sites in the cities of Mecca and Medina. Saudi officials had until Wednesday dismissed suggestions of any major policy change. “The short answer is, we are going to continue with our current laws,” deputy tourism minister Princess Haifa Al Saud said when asked directly about the issue at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2022. https://www.france24.com/en/middle-east/20240124-saudi-arabia-plans-to-allow-alcohol-sales-to-non-muslim-diplomats?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=telegram&utm_source=shorty |

Kenochi: I took I sincerely believe that if this government is ready to sustain the rally of the naira, they need to quickly do the following:
1) Sell off at least Two Refineries Reduce the wastage associated with those scrap metals 2) Give the states and local governments total control of Electricity generation and distribution This model we are practicing is a total waste of government resources, allow individuals and willing states to generate electricity and distribute it at their a price that will be market competitive The Government is already working on number 1 Number 2 has been done since last year. Even you sef can generate a certain amount of electricity. If you have the money, you can apply for a license. Security should be one of the first priority right now |

mrksquare: He hasn't started. He hasn't rolled out any capital project from the 2024 budget.
Are you not aware, Justice Omotosho voided the maiden budget of Gov. Sim and directed that he should represent it to the embattled Martins Amaehule led House of Assembly ?
All the projects he has done so far are from the Wike's budget of 2023. Though, Gov. Sim sought for a supplementary budget of 200Billion through a loan facility from Zenith Bank PLC and it was approved by Martin Amaehule led Assembly when the going was good. That is the money that was used in kick-starting the Port Harcourt Ring road. Julius Berger was mobilised 100% to avoid unnecessary variations in the contract sum since the project will last for 4years.
Let's be patient with the man. Alright boss |

mrksquare: For a man that gave Rivers state civil servants four promotions that were denied them by previous administrations, and you feel the workers should not jubilate? For a governor that gave 100k each to civil servants for Christmas and you think that isn't enough to jubilate over his victory? Mind you, during Wike's government he neither gave Christmas bonus nor even paid the workers the actual minimum wage.
Gov. Sim was a career civil servants and it isn't out of place for his immediate constituency to rejoice over his triumph at the supreme court.
As for projects, the Port Harcourt ring road project that was initiated by Amaechi, but left undone owing to the humugous cost to construct same is presently being constructed. And may I remind you that the project cost to the Rivers state government is #200 Billion. Even, Wike that is labeled Mr. Project refused to entertain the idea of constructing the said road owing to its cost implication.
The said #200 billion is enough to construct one flyover in each of the 23 LGA's at a cost of #7Billion per flyovers. Mind you, during Wike's era, he used #7 billion naira in constructing each of his overhead bridges in Obio Akpor
All the internal roads in the Old port Harcourt township is presently being reconstructed. Ditto all the internal roads in Bori, in Khana LGA. The Andonni Unity road is under construction. In short, the scope of the work has been extended to get to the Council Secretariat at Ngo town. The Woji- Aleto road is under construction.
And also take into congnizance that the budget last year was the one that was conceived by Wike. The disputed Rivers state budget is the first budget of Gov. SIM. But the budget is under contention. Gov. Sim will do well and his performances will be multi-sectoral in nature. I thought he has start spending from the 2024 budget |

Fujiyama: ^^^
It is still very dusty.
Work on site has stopped completely. Every few months, site workers with a payloader or an excavator turn up, go through the motions of doing some work and then disappear.
The only thing that makes the traffic situation slightly bearable now is that there are fewer cars on the road because of fuel subsidy removal and general hardship. I passed through the road before Buhari handover, traffic and dust wan finish me. I can't still believe such a massive project will be abandoned. The contractor handling the construction is HITECH. I actually thought it's because of the election construction stopped. I thought construction will restart after he is reelected. |

stepaside1: I commend Gov Sanwo Olu on this. I worry that financing is not yet sorted. I thought Afrexim Bank or some financial institution committed to providing part funding. Why not start with that and be more creative in finding the balance?
That said, there are lots of existing roads that are either potholes filled or very rough and undulating. Can there be a plan over a 4-yr period to resurface those roads and beautify them? The sort of upgrade/resurfacing that FG is doing with the third mainland bridge. Collaboration with FG is crucial as some of these roads are federal roads. Lagos should massively benefit with BAT as President. If not, no one else will do it for Lagos in a generation. Some of these roads include;
1. Eko bridge 2. Carter bridge 3. Ikorodu road 4. Ozumba Mbadiwe road 5. Kofo Abayomi street 6. Lekki expressway 7. Lekki regional road 8. Lekki coastal road 9. Oba Akran avenue 10. Mobolaji Bank Anthony way 11. Kingsway (Alfred Rewane) road 12. Falomo road 13. Billingsway road 14. Domestic to International airport road
...just to mention a few i concur |

Fujiyama:

The Regional Road has been abandoned.
This is January 2024. After all the media hype and propaganda, the LASG simply stopped work on the road and went to sleep. Completion date of June 2022 indeed.
Those living and travelling on that axis are worse off now than they were before this so called road construction began. They have to endure completely unecessary traffic jams and a much longer route to get from any point A to any point B. All of it completely avoidable. And there's no end in sight.
Sanwo-Olu 'won' his re-election bid and has since moved on to other things - and building infrastructure is clearly not one of those things.
Nigerians will learn. I can't believe the construction will be abandoned for more than a year |
