Governor Ugwuanyi told his visitors made up of members of the clergy, the laity and the Diaspora of the diocese that the decision of the his
administration to set up the urban renewal committee for Nsukka was to begin the fulfillment of part of his promises contained in his
inaugural address, during which he had said the university deserved
such a facelift to bring it in tandem with other un university towns elsewhere in Nigeria and beyond.

The committee headed by renowned architect and former commissioner for Works in the state, Mr. Chris Ofor, and also parades other professionals like surveyors and engineers would soon be inaugurated, the governor told his elated visitors.

They also include the two members representing Nsukka Local Government Area in Enugu State House of Assembly while the state
director of Lands would serve as the secretary of the committee.

He explained to the delegation that Enugu State Government has commenced actions in sourcing other ways of raising its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) to forestall the grave dangers posed by the
present economic downturn occasioned by the glut in the global oil industry.


“Here in Enugu State, our administration is already looking inwards with a view to sourcing other ways of raising our internal generated
revenue to enable us to deliver on our electoral promises”, he stated.

The governor expressed happiness that the bishop led a high-powered delegation made of representatives from across all key groups and
segments of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka to visit him.

He described the visit as a show of solidarity that gives his administration a huge moral boost at this early period, adding that he would strive to deliver good governance to the people of the state as a payback gesture in view of their support for him.

On the Bishop’s counsel, he urged the governor not to be deceived by the pecks of his office but to always be wise as a serpent in carrying out his duties, saying “Your Excellency, do not be deceived by the paraphernalia of office around you. We are aware of your vulnerability. You are, indeed, like a sheep in the midst of hungry wolves”.

But the clergyman also had words of encouragement thus: “Do not be afraid; be confident as God who started this work with you will bring it to conclusion.”

Governor Ugwuanyi, who had played host to a delegation led by the Bishop used the occasion to announce the list of 12 persons appointed to serve in the Nsukka Urban Renewal Committee to modernize the university town.

It was an occasion during which the clergyman and former vice rector of the Pontifical Urban University, Rome, warned the governor against the antics of deceitful hangers-on, while urging him not to lose his well-known trade mark of disarming humility...

I am very sorry to say this. I love Nsukka people but they are clannish to a fault. I have always wished Adada State was created so they can go and develop their state. Did we not witness the whole Enugu without exception, conceding governorship seat to Nsukka zone? Nsukka people would never have extended such gesture to Udi or Nkanu zone. Take analysis of past elections, they have always wanted to snatch power by all mean. The people who are here moaning over the building of road at Emene, have forgotten that while the whole Nkanuland was in darkness, Jim Nwobodo gave electricity to Nsukka.

I hate to tow this line, but I wish all those coming here to lament about Nsukka as if anyone is opposed to the development of their zone should simply carry their misery and go to another forum. Did anyone remember that I made a similar comment many months ago about my view on Nsukka. This is who they are. I am sorry I am generalizing, but that's who they are. Don't forget 90% of friend are from that area but they are disgustingly clannish. I know this will hurt some people but I have to say it.

I wish I had pictures.
What I mean is Udi rural roads are not only tarred, but are also properly marked, with sidewalks on select routes, despite not being subject to heavy use.
Also, Udi has her fair share of agro-allied industries. Nachi Oil is dead, but the idea that sited it is what I'm advocating.
9th Mile Corner is another industrial haven in that axis.
Lastly, Udi has better-developed tourist sites like Awhum Waterfalls. And it's linked to Ezeagu, Oji and Ozalla by excellent access roads.

On what basis do you decide where the roads are mostly needed? Do you realise that more people will gladly remain in the rural areas if they can get basic amenities like good roads there?

I completely agree with you.

Less than 20% of the population of Enugu State reside in Enugu city. By sheer numbers, that's a 4:1 victory for rural areas.

Moreso, we've taken a detour from the 90's model of development. Rural-Urban migration was such a big deal it was taught in schools. Rural dwellers were being encouraged to remain in rural areas, and concerted efforts made to keep them comfortable: rural electrification, potable water, health care infrastructure etc. Somewhere along the line, we adopted a strange, untested model of development : everyone ran off to big cities forever in search of the elusive golden fleece. Government neglect of the rural areas further entrenched this newfound model.

The model being advocated by biafrandream can only work in Lagos because it already is a conurbation of sorts, but not in Enugu with a large population in rural areas. I know what a relief the Nike-Opi Highway has turned out to be. And the offshoot from Ugwuogo-Nike to Isi Uzo has been another blessing to people of the area.

ENSG needs to replicate Udi in all the other 16 LGAs. The Udi model of rural development is where I stand.

This argument has come up before, and from what I remember, Deltans emphasised that Asaba is growing in its own right as the capital city of Delta State. I don't dispute that Asaba could be feeding off of Onitsha's commercial boom, but consider also, on the other hand, that Onitsha's boom might have subsumed Asaba's commercial future forever. Hence, Asaba has chosen to leverage on their comparative advantage: accommodation, hospitality, and the siting of an airport few kilometres from Onitsha might only be a happy accident.
In addition, previous posters have all assumed that Asaba's economic boom will take something away from Onitsha's. May be not. May be an even more resilient regional powerhouse will emerge to rival Lagos.

In all, these are two Igbo cities with shared heritage. Other than being separated by a body of water, there isn't much difference between both.
State creation appears to have divided us much more than we care to admit.

Even I don't know everyone on that list. But Obiora Ike, Barth Nnaji, Ike Ekweremadu, Osita Ogbu are deserving members.

I hope Ifeanyi is not inviting trouble to himself. First of all, it will require money to run the 15 man committee.

Secondly, I doubt if the members of the committee would abandon their private engagements to travel to Enugu to hold meetings all the time.

Thirdly, Ifeanyi should know that he is morally bound to carry out the recommendations of the committee because nobody wants to waste his time to offer advice that would be ignored.

What stops Ifeanyi visiting any of the committee members in their respective homes in the evenings and or inviting any of them for a dinner in the state house to deliberate on issues.

Too much cooks they say, spoil the broth. You don't need such committee to know how to govern though it's a welcome development.

Your concerns are genuine.
However, I don't think this group would be anything like the National Confab and it's characteristic profligate waste. But again, there's no talk on remuneration, so what do I know.
Ugwuanyi should run a lean government. I believe this present effort is so as to prioritise government investment. Having conceived the idea of courting some of our finest minds, I believe we should give him time to see what he can achieve. Or, whether he set out on the wrong foot.

I am actually welcoming this news with mixed feelings. Will this team really meet, will they last, will politics not scatter them? Will it not increase cost of governance?

On the good side, I am happy with the quality of people at the top of the committee. However I would have been happier if Prof. Nebo had made the list. The chairman, Msgr. obiora Ike has been championing entrepreneurship in Enugu, they manage one of the biggest printing press in Enugu, at Ziks Avenue, and has a small vocational school at coal camp. I am also happy, the members are not limited to Enugu state only, it gives me the feel that igbos can still have an Economic team, it just needs the someone to bring the governors, technocrats, Intellectuals and wealthy elites together. Lastly, It's either Ifeanyi is also toying Chime line of minimal media hype or he is truly slow in kick starting or maybe am too curious to know his line of governance... However, I am still happy he is seriously limiting his dependence on 'National cake'

The dwindling oil fortunes has opened up new ways of thinking for public office holders. Enugu, with a budget of 89 billion, and IGR of 19 billion, would hit the rocks had the state not opted to do things differently. I welcome the advisory committee. At least, these are all high achieving men and I don't think any of them is digging for gold (No gold in Enugu BTW).
Rockefeller only named Enugu as the city to watch out for in Nigeria, more like 30 under 30 to Watch.
Lastly, I think Ugwuanyi should take his time to get his foundation right. That way, he would deserve whatever encomiums his administration earns, as well as be responsible for mistakes, and answerable to heavy criticism, should he err.

Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi sets up 15-Man Advisory Committee consisting High-Achieving and Eminent Technocrats

Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has constituted a 15- man Economic Advisory Committee.

The committee, which has received applause from residents of the State is to advise and guide the state government on the best economic policies that would help to engender sustainable economic growth in the face of the present dwindling revenue from Nigeria’s Federation Account caused by the glut in the oil industry.

Among prominent Nigerians that made the list of the 15-member Enugu State Economic Advisory Committee are the former minister of power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, deputy senate president, Chief Ike Ekweremadu, industry giant and chairman of Innoson Group of Companies, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, former Economic Adviser to the president and current Director of the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Nigeria, Prof. Ostia Ogbu, Chief Chilo Offiah, among others.

In setting up the economic advisory team, the administration of Governor Ugwuanyi desires that the pool of experts would effectively discharge its obligations by “thinking of new ideas on economic issues” and or give government pertinent advise on what should be done to enhance the economic fortunes of the state.

According to a press statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Uwakwe Abugu, the functions of the economic and development experts would revolve around three key objectives, namely, to promote balanced and sustainable economic growth, to promote and engender adequate employment for the people of Enugu State and to promote a system of fair income distribution among the various income groups in the state.

The Vicar-General of the Catholic Diocese of Enugu, Msgr (Prof). Obiora Ike, who has been central figure in the successful entrepreneurial exploits of the diocese has been named the chairman of the committee while the Economic Adviser to the governor would serve as the secretary of the committee.

Other members of the committee put together by the governor include former Aviation minister, Amb. Fidelia Njeze, a successful investor and civil society activist, Chief Loretta Aniagolu, Dr. Chikelu Mba, Mr. Kelvin Emeka Onah, Mr. Emeka Odo who had mercurially ‘transfigured’ from a business reporter with the Daily Times of Nigeria to become a banker and financial guru, Princess Ngozi Nnaedozie, Mr. John Okoye and Mr. Ikechukwu Chioke.

The membership of the committee cut across states other than Enugu and the Chief Press Secretary explained it in the statement yesterday, saying the decision to include experts from outside the coal city state was informed by Governor Ugwuanyi’s desire to ensure that nothing was left undone in the current efforts to shore up the revenue base of the state in view of his burning desire to fulfill his campaign promises to the people of the state who gave him overwhelming support at the polls last April and have continued to show their love for him since he assumed office.

The governor’s move is basically a response to the concern across the country owing to the frightening development in the oil sector which has made it difficult for some states and even the federal governments to pay their staff salaries and meet other obligations starring them in the face as governments that should be responsive to the yearnings of the people.

Hence, Ugwuanyi’s advisory committee is coming at a time when “Enugu state Government has come to the conclusion that the advisory committee will assist us in investments promotion, mobilization of funds, increased internally generated revenue (IGR) and establishment of industries.

“It is our own economic survival strategy and we also intend to use the platform to encourage and reengineer effective public-private -partnership”, the statement added while also describing the committee as an assemblage of economists, entrepreneurial gurus, financial experts, and others from
the energy, civil society sectors as well as politicians who have cut their teeth in the executive and legislative business of government in the country.

The committee will be formally inaugurated soon after the coming Enugu State Executive Council would have been constituted.

Federal allocation depends on several parameters one of which is IGR. Others are Population (most influential ), Landmass, Derivation etc

Silicon Hill

Ugwueme-Udi Hills

Ezeagu Tourist Complex

Set in the most natural terrains, the Ezeagu tourist complex comprises of a body of water, a lake, a natural spring, and a cave that stretches for three kilometers on end. Ani Ozalla Lake and Shrine

There is the Ani Ozalla Lake and the Ani Ozalla Shrine, both located close to Ozalla in Nkanu West LGA. The Ani Ozalla Lake is a natural body of water with numerous number of crocodiles which are regarded as sacred – incarnations of the river goddess who at the promptings of the chief priest come to accept offerings from supplicants.

Ngwo Cave and Waterfall

The Ngwo Cave and Waterfall are located at the Ngwo Pine Forest where a heavy waterfall descends from overhead limestone rocks. The waterfall forms a shallow pool at the cave floor before flowing out as a stream into the wild. Apart from the waterfall, there are several caves that are tucked away into the rock, and you can access some of them by climbing while some are easily within reach.

Located in the southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria, Enugu State was created on August 27, 1991; and the name Enu-gu means “top of the hill”.
