He isn't a government agent neither is he an IPOB member. So, why is he always with these videos? What's his interest? He doesn't mean well for Igbos, it's evident in his post (Endsars protest were he mocked obigbo women), he has childish attitude (posting mostly to taunt IPOB). Is he out on a vengeance? There are a whole lot of questions begging for an answer. Boko Haram videos and ISWAP videos always comes from Boko Haram and ISWAP. So, how come IPOB killing videos comes from him a non member of IPOB or is he an under cover agent secretly working for IPOB (IPOB decoy) media wing. Who records it?, why do these video recordings always sent to a particular folk?, what's the reason behind the choice of this particular folk (what's his interest?). Many viewing this post as guest (including foreigners) and some registered members are really interested in questioning these guys. I took my time and went through this folks post on this forum, he certainly has issues with Igbos in general and IPOB in particular (citation: Endsars protect). I am really bothered about how they get these videos first hand. Many on this forum including those viewing as guest have asked similar question but no answers yet. I think IPOB should employ independent group of detectives to unravel these killings. Until then we'll all keep our fingers crossed. But my mind is made up already on the two you mentioned. If you're certain of MBBS admission then quit. Remember you can apply the knowledge of computer to solve many problems in agriculture. So, computer science is incorporated in all discipline including MBBS. So, if I were to be in your shoes I will rather finish my present degree, go for MSc, then a PhD and graduate at a very young age. These academic journey will entail the use of computers and acquiring computer based skills that will help you create a niche where you fit into perfectly. My story 1: As a young secondary school graduate, I had untold love for physics (nuclear physics), similarly, I had passion for computer science too but the universe chose chemistry for me, I understand Chemistry more than I do for physics but I don't really have that passion for it. I was offered admission to study industrial chemistry in the university, it wasn't really that fun to me coupled with some health challenges. I wanted to quit Chemistry for computer science in my second year but a friend dissuaded me, I am still grateful to him for that singular action. Fast forward to my MSc; everything changed, I met a supervisor who was so fanatic about Chemistry, boom! that flame of interest and love for chemistry was ignited. Then, during my PhD I applied the knowledge of computer (computational chemistry) in an attempt to solve my health challenges and it was really fun connecting back to my love for computer science. Presently, I am happy I didn't give up on chemistry. I am now working towards converting my passion into money, and it isn't easy I must confess. My Story 2: A friend of mine, had strong passion for MBBS, he was at least 22years older than me as at then, he graduated with us, went back and did Anatomy for 3 years, then wrote another jamb. I am proud of him, he is a medical doctor today. To him Chemistry was very difficult. My point: The key is passion. Can your passion sustain your interest in computer science or MBBS? Do you have a valid and workable plans to attain your goals? Conclusion: The universe has a way of chosen us for specific task, it's now left for us to improve on those task and monitize them for financial benefits. The first step to a successful academic career is having the right orientation. So, I would advice that you get in touch with the following first hand 1) Your institution of interest: Chosing the right university to acquire a PG certificate is very essential because it will determine whether you'll finish the said degree in a record time or not. The wrong choice of institution will frustrate your dreams and cause severe depression and regrets. So, ensure you ask appropriate questions in person. You must visit the institution in person. Look for previous graduate of the institution, ask them critical questions that include a) lecturers adherence to timetable b) student lecturers relationship c) departmental interpersonal relationships d) supervisor students relationship and other questions that will help you graduate early etc 2) Your supervisor: Your supervisor holds the keys to your success, so you must know and understand his/her personality. You must ensure you read and understand his research interest. Also, you must acknowledge whether his thesis is affordable by you. Can you foot his kind of research interest? You must also know his/her relationship with students. Can he read your work in record time and push your research because most times the supervisors provide the necessary push that'll encourage timely graduation of students. The wrong supervisor will elongate your stay in school and possibly lead to waste of scarce research resources. 3) your financial standing: How much do you have at hand to start your PG journey? Do you have a sponsor or not? Here you really need not to have a billion naira to start a PG but you really need to be hardworking enough to provide for your academic and research needs. PG is a journey you make alone so you need to be financially smart to sustain your study. 4) time availability for your study: How much in time are you willing to offer for your study? You must prioritize your schedule and assign more time to research and learning. The challenges are there but if you're working on your passion, you'll find it interesting 5) then your passion and relevance of your research to the present economy which includes; if the chosen area of research can yield enough fund. This information you must seek in person, you must create a financial niche were your research fits in perfectly. In academics it's always your passion (fun) that yields money (fund). My Story: During my BSc I had strong passion for organic chemistry, so I did my MSc in organic chemistry. It was very difficult at first but my love for organic chemistry sustain my interest in the thesis. Then, during my PhD I developed strong passion for computer aided drug design and discovery and it's application to sickle erythrocyte gelation. The passion for this research interest sustained my stay in PhD till graduation. After my MSc I helped someone interpret his spectra (NMR, GCMS, IR, UV-Vis) and I was paid for it. Not much but I was happy that the skills I acquire have paid me My point: Leave your comfort zone and make physical contacts with people and institutions. You'll go places. If ASUU perish we all perish. I think most of the people in this forum assume a lot. 1) During the last ASUU strike in EBSU, the cause of the strike being that the state government reduced the salaries of lecturers by 20% followed by notional promotion (promotion without pay increase). It followed that the same government that complains that there's no money went ahead to reduce student school fees followed by reduction in monthly subvention to EBSU; the consequences of this is that the university became bankrupt. Then, after the first year of the reduction in school fees, there was a subsequent increase in fees by the same government to 30% against the previous 10% reduction. Recently the same state government that subdued ASUU and NASU built a world class university using TETFUND meant for EBSU development. In this their university you pay nearly a million naira to study industrial chemistry. The big question remains can any of us here afford "king David umahi university of medical sciences" the big answer is no; not you and certainly not your children. The university wasn't built for the poor and middle income earners in Nigeria. In fact children of lecturers can't even afford the institution As I write this, EBSU which was formally the pride of state university in Nigeria is now a shadow of its past glory (politics have destroyed the school). We drove pass the institution on 26-4-2022, the students are protesting that not a single lecture has been taught and yet the university wants them to write exams. The lecturers have only been paid once this year since there are paid using the students school fees (the school fees isn't enough to pay staff salaries), some are not even motivated to teach at all. 2) During the tenure of Gov Elechi of Ebonyi state, the government merged/sold the state owned university teaching hospital with/to FETHA/Federal government, reason being that the state is too poor to have a state university teaching hospital so FETHA absorbed most of their staff but the consequences is staring its indigenes to the face now, just imagine a state without a teaching hospital. That means Ebonyi state government have not and will never employ medical and health workers. The state will be losing their health professionals to other states. FETHA staffs are over burdened while the indigenes can't get enough medical and health services. The big question remains how many of us can afford king David umahi university teaching hospital in Ebonyi state. You already know the answer. The key function of government is to make life easy and affordable to it's citizens but here in Nigeria we support government blindly; to us politics over everything. Same people who benefit from ASUU, NMA, JOHESU etc misery come online to castigate them. I don't pray that ASUU should give up but the day they do; we all should be rest assured that education will never be affordable again. Non of us can afford a private university. Government subsidizes health care and education. Imagine how expensive private hospitals are then try to picture how exorbitant private universities is then you can appreciate this battle of purpose. The reason behind proliferation of private universities is to weaken government universities and if it's achieved then we all should prepare to 1) Lose accreditation because most PhDs will go for job openings at private universities 2) pay more fees and semester dues 3) have uneducated population 4) most of the awarded degrees in public universities will be rejected abroad due to lack of accreditation 5) Brain drain etc. If I give testimonies of other universities in Nigeria I have had interaction with you'll be perplexed. Note: Most private universities pay higher salaries than government owned universities. So, it's happening already. fapcrook:1) The guy you were replying to, knows little or nothing about academics. It's funny how they exert their claims with so much confidence as if he/she knows what he/she is insinuating. Generally, in academics PGD overrides a BSc, MSc overrides a BSc while a PhD overrides a MSc. irrespective of grade. What it implies is that with a PGD you've done two independent research while a first class BSc. have done just one independent research. PGD confers you with greater honours than BSc. as far as certification is involved. A PGD with good academic papers will place you far above your mates with BSc. Irrespective of grade the order is thus BSc < PGD < MSc < Mphil< PhD 2) On employability for PhDs, it's a general problem worldwide but the Nigerian issues is always generally pathetic. But the opportunity PhD confers on you is enormous, you can apply for a postdoc abroad, get employed in an industry, become an adjunct lecturer, become an independent researcher and with a PhD you can head any government ministry without undue victimization. Even in your village you can as well become intermediary between your community and any company that wishes to be sited in your community. But if your wish is academics then prepare to do research and publish the results of your finding. The private universities are there to employ you for a start then with good research records you can move to a public university, truth is you can even combine the two and make good money for yourself. PhDs are very few, I mean very rare to find. Out of 7 of us that graduated 5 works with a tertiary institution (out of the 5, 1 works as an adjunct lecturer too), 1 works with a government secondary school while 1 works with a private secondary school. After the PhD, what's your contribution to knowledge? That's all that matters. So, growth is a gradual process, I believe in you and I know you'll get there. It's not everyone that can summon the courage to solicit for assistance in a public forum like this. One day your passion for academics will pay you well, so, till then don't forget to share your testimonies with us when it happens. According to the uncertainty principle, you cannot measure position and momentum with same precision; it's either precision in position increases while that of momentum decreases. So, you should've understood earlier that getting married and pursing a PG is very difficult, I even wonder how you guys do it; possibly you've kids too. I got my PhD at 30 not long ago, I know how stressful and financially demanding it was, talk of someone who is married with kids. My major concern is, as a married man, no matter how much people give to you, your family comes first. So, you have to take care of your wife and kids before considering the PhD self. My point: Be rest assured that your PhD will delay based on fund and time. So, don't bother yourself much about leaving school early rather focus on taking it one step at a time so you don't get depressed and possibly suffer from high blood pressure (your wife don't wanna be a widow neither do your kids wanna be orphans). And during the PhD acquire some sellable skills that can provide for you outside lecturing. You can as a matter of urgency explore and exploit your university for opportunities. My Observations: During my PhD journey, most of the married ones amongst us did their PhD in more than 10 years, I guess family comes with its own wahala. So, some will drop out of PhD, comeback and continue from where they stopped, some even start afresh. Your Testimony: You should be grateful that you at 32 years already have a job, a wife and kids. Me I only have a PhD, no job, no wife, no child yet. Summary: God will provide. You're not in competition with anyone. You're blessed already, let your family be your major consolation. I will advise that you chose an aspect of your course that best suits your passion and devote your interest in it. Ensure you're a master in that area. Then, study harder everyday, target A's only and probably you'll get into 2.1 but even if you didn't make it, you'll not be in deficit because you also invested in your passion which inturn will yield fund. PGDE: is a professional certificate. The PGDE is a prerequisite for Nigerians who do not possess educational background to acquire the needed knowledge and teaching skills that qualifies them for TRCN (teachers registration council of Nigeria) exams, and if you pass the exams you're issued a licence to teach in Nigeria. Only those that graduate from the faculty of education are directly admitted into TRCN without writing any exams. So, certificate in education is both academic qualification and professional certificate. Presently, you cannot invigilate or supervise WAEC or NECO exams without TRCN PGD: is an academic certificate. The PGD is mostly needed when there is need to move from one department to the other or from one faculty to another, also, PGD is required if you intend to be part of a research group without prior information in the said research. The aim is to improve your knowledge in preparation for the task ahead. So, you'll do PGD not just because of your CGPA but because the university wishes to imbibe in you the needed skill to perform certain task. So, the PGD is an academic certificate thus can guarantee you employment opportunities or improve your chances of getting employed in an institution that requires a minimum qualification of BSc. Therefore, PGD is an academic prerequisite while PGDE is a professional prerequisite At the university: BSc < PGD < MSc < MPhil < PhD Note: If you've a degree in education you're not required to go for PGDE because your bachelorette is both a professional certificate and an academic certificate. But I've seen people who do PGDE with intentions of furthering to MSc, it's possible when the said individual has some years of experience evidenced by your appointment letter, letter of promotion, or any other proof as required by the institution you're applying to. The Need to Acquire a directional certificate - My Verdict The first challenge of those who intend to be part of the academic community is focus (direction). Acquiring certificates without due investigation of the relevance of the said certificate in your field of endeavor becomes a challenge and most times leads to nowhere and in most cases depression. As a young university graduate, it becomes paramount that you ascertain from your Lecturers the appropriate combination of degrees capable of getting you an academic or industrial position. Most students don't know nor understand how precarious it is to jump from one department (chemistry) to another department (mathematics) or from one faculty (Physical sciences) to another faculty (pharmaceuticals sciences). Many are of the opinion that it doesn't really matter as much as you do a postgraduate diploma in the said department but that's far from the truth, in fact very far from the truth. Employability in academics is not same with industries, academics requires that you stick to the original department/faculty. Moving from one department or faculty to the other reduces your chances of securing an academic position i.e the odds are against you. So far as academics is the reason behind your certificate acquisition you most stick to the original. What if I bring to your notice that most people who have certificates from different faculties/departments do not really possess a postgraduate diploma. How come? The answer to the above borders mostly on online degrees. Most People are ill informed, nonchalant and hasty in decision making as it relates to academics. So, before you pick that postgraduate form, please go to your BSc supervisor and make enquiry. Make sure you clear all your doubts because any question you left hanging will come back to hunt you. My Experience: 1) An industrial chemist became the HOD of civil engineering department in one of Nigeria state university. Her movement was BSc industrial chemistry, MSc Hydrology, PhD ( I can't recall her area but still it was civil engineering related). She could only become the HOD solely on connection but from her testament she wished she did all her degrees in chemistry. 2) while working for one of the state government in Nigeria for recruitment, I noticed these certificates in the following order without a postgraduate diploma: Bed, MSc public health, PhD Medical microbiology. Please, if you were in my shoes how do you employ this individual to teach in a secondary school? (I am still of the opinion that he got his certificates online) 3) Thirdly, this story https://www.nairaland.com/7076488/feel-like-wasted-time-education My Verdict: Dr. Gaddo would say " Because of the politics in the university stay where you are". If academics is your goal stay right there, finish that course, get a PhD in that course and the sky will beg to catch up with you. The university is an ocean of opportunities. Conclusion: Converting your passion (fun) into pay (Fund) is a very tricky and subtle means but a higher degree in the hands of an enlightened mind is a weapon and if utilized in it's fullness yields benefits beyond your expectations. Assuming all variables remains constant and you spend more or less 1.5 million to acquire MSc in two years. If you get a job placement in a private university that pays at least 120k/month then 1.44 million/year for an assistant lecturer. So, in two years you have recovered all the money spent and raking in profits. The big question remains how many businesses can yield such profit in just two year with same capital. If I am to include a doctorate certainly a PhD will place you above your mates because your competitors are no longer your countrymen but foreigners. There was a time I doubted peoples success stories, success to me was an illusion, I felt something's were practically impossible. I always made excuses were there isn't need for one. To me then sickle cell was the reason I attached to most of my failures. Everything changed when I met my supervisor, he gave me work and more works to do. Funny thing is all the activities he assigned to me was meant to build me. Each stage I conquered I felt more accomplished and fulfilled. I acknowledge they exist millions far better than me that's why I must keep moving forward knowing that one day I will get there. To grow I had to acknowledge that everything is possible and I tasked myself to quit giving excuses, started taking responsibility for my mistakes and worked towards correcting them. Most importantly I accepted who I am, had my routine drugs near me always and adhere strictly to the Dr instructions, attends clinic often and contribute towards awareness creation. ajl:A PhD is a minimum of 3 years, so it's very much possible. On Nigerian University: If my story was that of someone who finished PhD in 12 years some would have had reasons to rain abuses on our lecturers and the university system as a whole but now the system worked, nobody wants to appreciate the efforts made by our Professors. Juliearth:The key is passion. I am passionate about academics. I love to teach. Even if I become Elon musk without PhD I will still feel empty. I followed my passion, I am certain that one day the passion if it doesn't bring money it will bring fame and the fame will certainly bring money. But for now money isn't a priority. My happiness and fulfilment comes first. Don't forget the university is an ocean of opportunities 2 Likes |
