The Presidential ambition of All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Bola "Pablo Escobar" Tinubu, may come to an abrupt end if he doesn’t come up with a strategy to outsmart the new leadership of the party.

In early 2020, APC stalwart and former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola "Pablo Escobar" Tinubu, seemed to be in a position to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023. This was because – apart from his access to funds and enviable connections across the country – he had strong influence over the party led by its National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

Tinubu’s influence also seemed to extend to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a federal agency committed to fighting financial crimes. The EFCC, led by Ibrahim Magu at the time, had received several petitions against Tinubu between 2017 and 2020 but took no action

Some strategists in the APC are now trying to rewrite the plot, building alliances in the south-south and south-east which would render Tinubu’s south-west convening power less vital for election success.

It is important to note, however, that there has not been a Yoruba president in 16 years, since General Olusegun Obasanjo. The ethnicity of politics in Nigeria means some may see this opportunity as the ‘time’ for Yorubas. However, Tinubu is not the only popular Yoruba politician that could be a contender even though he is the wealthiest and arguably the most influential.

No fewer than 58 top politicians and political office holders in the country have spent millions of naira to visit the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in London, United Kingdom (UK), Daily Trust reports.

Since August 12, when President Muhammadu Buhari visited him at Duchess Mews, Portland Place, Central London home, his political godsons, admirers, and supporters have turned the residence into a Mecca of a sort. Buhari was in the United Kingdom like Tinubu for medical attention.

Tinubu is one of the top shots of the APC said to be eyeing the presidency. There have been controversies over the reported pact between him and President Buhari on the 2023 presidency.

Governors who have so far visited include Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Dr Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti), Rotimi Akeredolu (Ondo), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), and Umar Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), who was in the United Kingdom for his son’s graduation.

Ganduje, his son, Muhammad; two lawmakers- Kabiru Alhassan Rurum and Aminu Babba Dan’Agundi visited Tinubu.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila was also there. Traditionally, the Speaker travels with some of his aides.

The Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, and House of Representatives' member, James Faleke (APC, Ikeja) were also there.

After Sanwo-Olu’s visit, a delegation of Lagos State government, comprising the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat; Chief of Staff, Tayo Ayinde; Deputy Chief of Staff, Gboyega Soyannwo and Special Adviser on Education, Tokunbo Wahab was also there.

Others who have visited London to see the Asiwaju include Senators Tokunbo Abiru (Lagos East); Opeyemi Bamidele (Ekiti Central); Adeola Solomon (Lagos Central), Adelere Oriolowo (Osun West), and Mohammed Sani (Niger East). Former APC National Legal Adviser, Dr Muiz Banire (SAN), Adekunle Akanbi, National President of ALGON, Kolade Alabi, and Lagos State secretary of the association, Rasaq Ajala.

The Isolo Local Council Development Area Chairman in Lagos, Otunba Adebayo Olasoju, Lagos lawmakers – Temitope Adewale (Ifako-Ijaiye 1); Nureni Akinsanya (Mushin 1); Sylvester Ogunkelu (Epe 2); a delegation of the Governors’ Advisory Council (GAC) comprising Senator Anthony Adefuye, Mr Wale Edun and Mrs Idiat Adebule, a former deputy governor, had also visited him.

Also in London for Tinubu were four former governors, Senator Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara), Senator Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), and Senator Kashim Shettima (Borno). Senator Abu Ibrahim and Usman Zanna were also there.

The latest people to pay him were members of the Northern Caucus in the House of Representatives, led by Deputy Speaker, Ahmed Wase.

The entourage was made up of 20 lawmakers, including the Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa; Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Abubakar Fulata; Chairman, House Committee on the Army, Abdulrazak Namdas; Blessing Onuh (APC, Benue), daughter of former President of the Senate, David Mark; Sada Soli (APC, Katsina), Abubakar Lado Suleja (APC, Niger) and 13 others.

Minus President Buhari, Ganduje, and three others who were in the United Kingdom for personal reasons, 53 persons were in London for the former Lagos State governor.

With the increasing prices of tickets, at least each visitor would have spent between N4 million and N5 million on First Class or Business Class return tickets to the UK, based on our findings from travel agents.

This puts the money spent by those who visited Tinubu at N265 million for the 53 politicians.

This is in addition to other expenses on hotel accommodation in London, feeding, among others. An average room in a hotel per night costs between 150 and 200 pounds (N90, 000 and N120, 000), according to information obtained from some travel and leisure companies.

A British Airways non-stop return first-class ticket from Nigeria to London costs between $7,000 (N4 million at the rate of N570 to a dollar) and $10,000 (N5.7m).

A Business Class ticket on the other hand costs between $4,000 and $6,000 depending on the time the booking was done.

While Tinubu is currently not holding any political office as he remains a private citizen, Nigerians have been talking about the alleged deployment of taxpayers’ money by politicians to visit him.

A public affairs analyst, Comrade Toyin Raheem, said while there was nothing wrong in paying a visit to someone who is indisposed, the majority of those doing the visiting must have spent public funds to embark on the visits.

Raheem, who is the Chairman of the Coalition Against Corruption and Bad Governance (CACOBAG), said the money could have been better spent on providing basic amenities that would benefit the masses.

He said, “In African culture, there is nothing wrong in visiting somebody that is sick but it shouldn’t be at the expense of the masses. Now, the majority of these people going to visit Tinubu used public funds. The money they spend does not belong to them.

“Has that now become part of their projects? There are a lot of things that need to be attended to. There are a lot of infrastructures that are crying for attention, yet many of them diverted money meant for the people to go and visit their leader. Nobody says they should not go and visit their leaders but it should be from their pocket, it shouldn’t be money that belongs to all of us as a people. It is wrong.”

Dr Chido Onumah, Coordinator, African Centre for Media and Information Literacy (AFRICMIL), said that those engaged in the trip to visit Tinubu in London and spending states resources would probably claim they are not using state resources.

“But it is also a pointer to the nature of the politics of our ruling class. How members of that class are beholden to a few people at every moment.

“For me, the bigger issue is the fact that public officers who have the opportunity to make a difference do not see the importance of fixing the country’s health system,” Onumah said.

On his part, Malam Hamza B. Lawal, the Chief Executive of Connected Development (CODE) and founder of the ‘Follow the Money’, said that by discussing whether or not politicians are using state resources to visit Tinubu, is dwelling on issues that should be of no importance in the national discourse.

He said, “There is no question that using taxpayers’ money for such trips is wrong, but what should concern us is the root cause of politicians acting with such impunity and if you ask me, it is lack of proper accountability.

“This is why we ‘Follow the Money’ so that it doesn’t enter private pockets or is misappropriated. Until we have solid institutions and systems where every naira and kobo used in public offices are accounted for, we are going to keep debating the moral justification or legal apparatus for government officials to use taxpayers’ money to visit their godfather abroad.”

Investigation has revealed that the London mansion where the National Leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu welcomed President Muhammadu Buhari on August 12, 2021 is the subject of a multi-billion fraud scandal.

The investigation is part of the global International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ)-led Pandora Papers project, which Nigeria’s PREMIUM TIMES is a part of.

The project involved 600 journalists from 150 news organisations around the world sorting and analysing a trove of almost 12 million confidential files, tracking down and interviewing sources, and adding context using public records and documents.

The leaked files were retrieved from some offshore services firms around the world that set up shell companies and other offshore entities for clients, many of them influential politicians, businesspersons, and criminals seeking to conceal their financial dealings.

The investigation added that the Buhari government had also secured a freezing order on the property from a Federal High Court before the previous owner, who is now an international fugitive, sold it at a huge discount to an offshore company owned by the governor of Osun State,
Gboyega Oyetola, a known proxy and a relative of Tinubu.

The property, which is situated at 32 Grove End Road, in the wealthy Westminster neighbourhood of London, has become a sort of mecca to associates of Tinubu, and politicians of the ruling APC, after the former Lagos Governor started staying there to recuperate.

Apart from Buhari, other politicians who have visited Tinubu at the expanse 6,975 sq ft property are the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; a former governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun; Amosun’s successor, Dapo Abiodun; the governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi; the governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu; members of the Lagos State House of Assembly; the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila; a contingent from Kano State led by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje; top Fuji musician; Wasiu Ayinde, among other dignitaries.

Documents obtained from the UK property register revealed that in July 2013, the property with title number 340992, was bought for £11.95 million by Zavlil Holdings Ltd, a shell company incorporated in the British Virgin Islands, a notorious tax haven.

Further documents obtained by PREMIUM TIMES revealed that Zavlil Holdings Limited is owned by Kolawole Aluko, an international fugitive wanted by law enforcement agencies in Nigeria and the United States for money laundering.

Kola Aluko and his associate, Jide Omokore, were indicted in the U.S. and Nigeria for multi-million-dollar fraud and money laundering violations allegedly in collusion with a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

In 2016, the Nigerian Government filed a Mareva injunction at a Federal High Court in Lagos seeking to confiscate a list of properties belonging to Messrs Aluko and Omokore valued at $1.8 billion.

A Mareva injunction is a Court order which freezes the assets of a defendant pending the outcome of a litigation.

In the suit against Messrs Omokore and Aluko, alongside their companies, Atlantic Energy Drilling Concepts Nigeria Limited and Atlantic Energy Brass Development Limited, the Nigerian Government asked the court to grant it seven orders to prevent the accused from disposing the assets. The government alleged they were acquired through fraudulent means.

The third prayer the government made to the court was to grant it an order restraining the accused “from giving any instruction, demanding, accepting, receiving payments and/or transacting, transferring, mortgaging or howsoever dealing in any manner with assets of the Defendants in both houses and land in Abuja and Lagos and others located outside Nigeria.”

The government then listed 17 properties in Abuja, Lagos, the U.S., Canada, Dubai, Switzerland, and the UK. Among the listed properties was “Grove End Road, London”.

The court granted the government all its prayers. In October 2017, an attempt by the defendants to dismiss the Mareva injunction granted on the properties was subsequently dismissed by Oluremi Oguntoyinbo, the trial judge.

But just around the time (on October 18, 2017) the court dismissed the defendant’s attempt to dismiss the injunction, documents obtained from the U.K. property register revealed that Mr Aluko sold the house for £9 million to Aranda Overseas Corporation, an offshore company incorporated in the British Virgins Island by two of Tinubu’s most trusted surrogates – Adegboyega Oyetola, formerly chair of Paragon Group of Companies and incumbent governor of Osun State and Elusanmi Eludoyin, Mr Oyetola’s successor at Paragon.

In November 1999, 18 years before it was used as a vehicle to purchase the London property, Oyetola and his billionaire partner, Eludoyin, sought the service of a Bristol, UK-based international company registration agent, Jordans Limited, to help them set up a company.

They wanted a kind of setup that would guarantee some secrecy and on November 11 of that year, the company was registered.

Leaked confidential records revealed that Messrs Eludoyin and Oyetola became the shareholders and directors of Aranda and we did not see any record that the latter resigned from the management of the company even as he served as chief of staff to his predecessor, Rauf Aregbesola, thereby breaking Nigeria’s law.

In Nigeria, a person is statutorily obligated to withdraw from engaging in or directing a private business, except if it is farming, upon becoming a public officer, Section Six (6) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act stipulates.

Apart from Aranda, Oyetola has another footprint in the offshore shadow economy. He and Eludoyin, in 2003, incorporated another shelf company in the British Virgin Islands, Global Investments Offshore Limited.

He ran the company as a director almost throughout his term as Mr Aregbesola’s Chief of Staff. However in June 2018, months before he became governor, he withdrew from the company and made his children – Rukayat Oyetola, Hafiz Oyetola, and Rasheedat Oyetola directors.

He also transferred his shares in Global Investments Offshore Limited to Mr Eludoyin and his son Haifz in June 2018. A register of directors we saw shows that all the formalities for the transfers were concluded and signed on June 1, 2018.

By remaining a director of Global Offshore for the entire period he was Chief of Staff to Aregbesola, Oyetola violated Nigeria’s code of conduct law and could be arraigned before the Code of Conduct Tribunal if authorities decide to prosecute him for the infraction.

It however remains unclear why Oyetola would rush to buy a property his country was pushing to confiscate due to well-known corruption allegations against its then owner.

Also unclear is why Tinubu, who apparently wants to become Nigeria`s president, would agree to stay at the controversial property.

As for Buhari, it is yet unknown why he would visit Tinubu at a property suspected to have been originally bought by Mr Aluko from the proceeds of alleged theft of Nigeria’s oil money.

Oyetola ignored multiple requests for him to comment on this story. His spokespersons declined to revert days after they promised to do so.

This is a sequel to my open letter to Pastor RUGA Osinbajo published on Monday. Great leaders have visions. You can’t be a real leader who people want to follow without vision. Vision is the essential leadership ingredient. Vision is a clear, inspiring, practical, and attractive picture of a country’s future.

Apart from Chief Obafemi Awolowo, The Great Awo, no Nigerian leader has the gift of vision for Nigeria. All the leaders produced so far have been spectators and predators. Pastor RUGA Osinbajo argued in his address to CAN (Christian Association of Nigeria) that for 61 years the vision for Nigeria is undefeated. What vision? I believe Pastor’s RUGA’s 61 years of undefeated vision for Nigeria is a country of generators, boreholes, and dilapidated schools.


A country of death trap roads, of shanties, of crumbling hospitals without doctors, nurses, and drugs, of unreliable and or non-existent public transportation, of glorified high schools, called universities, of unsafe and unsecured country, of tyrannical and lawless government, of hungry, haggard-looking citizens dying like flies from treatable and preventable diseases, of nepotist, corrupt, deaf, dumb, blind leader. The Punch in an exhaustive investigative report, detailed how Vice President Yemi Osinbajo aka Pastor RUGA, was involved in an alleged N100bn scam.

In what could be termed Linkage Scam Group, N100bn was laundered among four different companies owned by the same people. Simmons Cooper Partners is linked to Ocean Trust Limited. Ocean Trust Limited is linked to Alpha Beta Consulting Limited. Alpha Beta Consulting Limited is linked to Alpha Beta LP. The four companies were accused of being a “conduit for diversion and laundering of funds”.

Simmons Cooper Partners is linked to Osinbajo. Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to General Muhammadu Buhari, said Simmons Cooper Partners was listed as a company in which Osinbajo has a stake in his assets declaration form in 2015. Dapo Apara, the erstwhile managing director of Alpha Beta, alleged that Alpha Beta owed the federal government N100bn in unpaid taxes spanning over 10 years.

Osinbajo as the then Attorney General of Lagos State and Wale Edun the then Commissioner for Finance, recommended to Bola Ahmed Tinubu the then Lagos State governor, that Alpha Beta Consulting be given the exclusive rights to collect taxes on behalf of Lagos State government with 10 per cent commission. Alpha Beta raked in N600m per month from the contract.

Pro-transparency groups and those close to Tinubu business empire confirmed that Tinubu owns Alpha Beta. In 2012, Dominic Adegbola, Lagos-based medical doctor, filed a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to Lagos State government seeking detailed information on all Alpha Beta contracts with Lagos State since 1999. Ade Ipaye, the then Lagos State Attorney General now Osinbajo’s chief of staff, turned down the request saying the FOI was a federal law that did not apply to the states.

In November 2017, a state judge ruled that the FOI was applicable to Lagos State. The judge said “The law was duly enacted by the National Assembly and did not require domestication to take effect in states.” What happened to the N100bn Alpha Beta scam? Like all other high profile corruption cases, the EFCC deleted the case from its docket.

During the Buhari-Osinbajo presidency, corruption has flourished in previously unthinkable ways, and at such a remarkable rate, that it’s almost impossible to keep tabs on it. Osinbajo has dutifully stood by General Buhari, mustering a devotional gaze rarely seen by an intellectual to an illiterate and ignorant president. What a comical mismatch!

History is replete with people who have changed the world for good as well as those who caused massive destruction for their people. They left a wake of pain behind them. They left a legacy of destruction, legacy of pain, and legacy of ruins. Osinbajo as Vice President of Federal Republic of Nigeria by his utterances, action, or inaction writes his own history and legacy.

Former President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki, has never hidden his ambition to be president of Nigeria and his eyes remain on the ball. In this report, Segun James looks at the politics of a man, who has suddenly become an issue in the match towards 2023

Two years after Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki left office as the President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, he is still an issue in the nation’s body polity, more so as he assumed a prominent place in the leadership of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Since leaving office, he has not only been a rallying point for the party, he has also spent his time reconciling the fractured party and getting it ready for the 2023 general election.

Synergy may not be an ideal word in politics, yet, accepted political management theory holds that, there are a few ways for a party to boost its value, most especially among states controlled by it. This has been the work of Saraki in the last few months.

However, there’s a reason for Saraki’s efforts. Kit is not just because he has his eyes on the presidency in 2023, but really, what’s an ambition without a viable platform? In addition, he believes the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has performed badly in the last six years, hence the need to go for a competent and capable hand that can lead the nation out of the doldrums.

He is neither from the core north nor from the south. He comes from the middle belt, a part of the country that has also been agitating that the presidency should be zoned to them. He believes he would be a unifier in a nation that is torn between ethnic and religious divides. He has been going round the country, promising, albeit on behalf of the party, to make a country suffering collapse of confidence to stand tall again.

Until Saraki was being harassed by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) for alleged financial crimes committed as governor of Kwara State from 2007 to 2015, that it became known to many that he might have been marked for decimation.

Although the EFCC has denied arresting him over allegations of fraud and money laundering, but his invitation was evidently suspect. EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren said contrary to reports, the former governor of Kwara simply honoured the invitation of the commission, stressing that he was not arrested.

“It is true he was invited, and he responded but there are no details at the moment,” said Uwujaren

Saraki was said to have been arrested in Abuja shortly after attending a wedding ceremony of the daughter of one of his loyalists and the Third Republic Kwara State governor, Senator Shaaba Lafiagi.

A statement by his Media Office, signed by Alhaji Yusuph Olaniyonu, also confirmed that Saraki was invited to clarify issues that the commission raised with him, but was never arrested.

“Following the order of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on the Fundamental Human Rights case filed by Saraki during the period of the former Chairman of the EFCC, which precluded the commission from investigating him until the matter is dispensed with, the commission at the last hearing on July 14, 2021, pleaded with the judge that the order was preventing them from doing their job.

“Following this complaint, Saraki, as a responsible citizen, on his own volition approached the commission that at the earliest convenient date, he was willing to visit the commission’s office and clarify all issues they might want to raise with him.

“He, therefore, visited the commission’s office this afternoon and answered some questions. He is back home. He was not arrested. Saraki also assured the commission that he has nothing to hide and will always make himself available to clear all issues that may require his attention.”

If there was one thing that the former President of the United States of America, Mr. Donald Trump has, it is to intuitively see the future opposition. It was this that made him ask the Ukrainian government to investigate and discredit a yet to be nominated Joe Biden as the candidate of the opposition Democratic Party.

It was this intuition that also made him say, even before the 2020 election that, “I will not concede if I lose as it would be deemed corrupt.” Both scenarios became true. Today, in Nigeria, a similar scenario is playing out. The attempt to discredit potential opposition candidates by the ruling APC is the name of the game.

Saraki is no stranger to controversy. The former president of the senate was one of the five governors that crossed the Rubicon by defecting from the PDP to the newly formed congregation of political parties, the APC in 2013, a move that led to the loss of power by the PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan to APC’s Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Not long after that, he had another reason to return to his PDP. The move, this time, did not achieve the dramatic effect of the first.

Exceptional times call for exceptional measures. This appears to be the situation in the Nigerian polity. Yes, politics has begun in earnest and the race for 2023 is hotting up; and Saraki is one of the people on the front line.

Over the past decades, Saraki has been a recurring decimal in the political scene of Nigeria. Either as governor of Kwara State or President of the Senate, he had consciously stayed politically relevant since 1999, building bridges across the different divides.

For Saraki, taking the road less travelled has often led to better results, even though very controversial. But one that is often overlooked: crisscrossing from the PDP to the APC and back is no big deal.

Scion of the enigmatic Ilorin political leader, Dr. Olusola Saraki, Bukola took his first tottering steps in politics at the coming of the 4th Republic and within a few years, stepped out of his father’s shadows and established himself as a leader and force to be reckoned with.

However, the surprising thing about Saraki’s invitation by the EFCC for alleged corruption charges committed while in office as governor was not the allegation, but the timing.

Saraki is today one of the leading contenders for the presidential ticket of the opposition PDP, even though none has openly declared for the nation’s number seat. Given his antecedent as a political strategist, the belief in some quarters is that the invitation was a warning sign of things to come.

The story of Saraki is the tale of a man that has been able to defy the odds at every turn. Until the “Otògé” movement in Kwara, which uprooted his stranglehold on the state’spolitics, Saraki, like his father, had been able to negotiate himself into the national consciousness and reckoning.

But the Otògé movement, which changed the dynamics in the state politics, uprooted Saraki and his loyalists from the state’s political system, has turned out positive. Barely two years later, Saraki is not just back into the reckoning, he is the in-thing, a situation that is giving the state governor sleepless nights.

A few years ago, PDP’s political hegemony in Nigeria was unassailable, but today, all of that is history. No thanks to Saraki and others, who left the party. But now that he is back to the fold, could he repeat the magic of 2013? That remains one of the salient questions as the race towards 2023 inches closer.

In politics, culture splits wildly. Politics encourages one another to cross-carpet along the political divide without regard to ideological difference.

The going forth and back by Saraki and a former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has been a source of concern for some of the electorate, who have keyed into their ideologies. But, surely, there is a similarity between the PDP and the APC, which in fact, is the reason for the seeming confusion over the ideal choice among the voting Nigerians. It is the lack of ideology between both parties.

Every crisis is a challenge and an opportunity. Yesterday’s solutions are often unsuitable for today’s victory. Since Saraki’s reconciliation committee started working, the PDP seemed to have gotten its groove back. The party is not only on its way back from the edge of extinction but from all indications, it may end up giving the APC a run for its money and vanished goodwill.

With Nigerians fed up with the almost eight years of the APC and President Buhari, there is certainly hope for the opposition party; and Saraki seems to be one of the “great white hopes” that could drive the process. But will he and the PDP succeed?

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari and former President Goodluck Jonathan, Wednesday met at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

The former president came into the premises at about 4pm.

It was not clear why he visited President Buhari as he did not speak to the media afterwards.

However, Jonathan had been active as ECOWAS special envoy to Mali, a position that has brought him in more regular touch with President Buhari in recent times.
