Nigeria’s Justice Minister, Abubakar Malami has reportedly secured federal jobs for his northern brothers, a report by Gazette Nigeria has revealed.

The federal jobs were secured at the National Industrial Court according to the report.

The three beneficiaries have been identified as: Mohammed Lameer Sani Gado, Shuaibu Ahmed, and Abdulhadi Usman Bayaro.

Making what appeared as nepotistic appointments public, an overly excited Mr Gado, who hails from the same state (Kebbi) as the justice minister, disclosed on his Facebook page that the appointment letters were issued on June 24, 2021, and took effect on June 30, 2021.

“Our sincere gratitude goes to the Almighty for making it a reality. Today Friday, 25.06.2021, we received our offer of provisional appointment with the national industrial court,” Mr Gado wrote.

Thanking the Attorney general for using his office to facilitate their appointments at the court, Mr Gado added, “Our sincere appreciation goes to Attorney General Abubakar Malami, who is solidly behind this. May Allah reward you with jannatul firdausil Aalah, Amin.

“The three of us are Mohammed Lameer Sani, Shuaibu Ahmed, Abdulhadi Usman Bayaro.”

In the letters seen by Peoples Gazette, Messrs Gado, Bayaro, and Ahmed all had the Federal Ministry of Justice Abuja as their address.

While the court offered Messrs Gado and Bayaro appointments as ‘assistant executive officer,’ Mr Ahmed was employed as ‘assistant data processing officer’ at its Sokoto division.

“Your appointment will take effect from 30th June 2021 and you are accordingly advised to report to the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, Sokoto Judicial Division at Opposite Federal Government College, Kano Road, Sokoto, Sokoto State for the documentation of your appointment while the authenticity of your certificate/statement of result is being verified,” the letters stated.

Mr Malami could not be reached for a comment on his role in the appointments. The Gazette contacted his spokesman, Umar Gwandu, on whether the justice ministry advertised vacancies for the jobs.

Instead of responding to the inquiry, Mr Gwandu requested The Gazette should forward its inquiry to him via WhatsApp, but he had yet to respond to it several hours after receiving the message.

Mr Gwandu also refused to pick a follow-up call from The Gazette.

In February, The Gazette exposed how President Muhammadu Buhari secretly recruited his new media aide Bashir Ahmad and four others into the Department of Petroleum Resources in violation of the law.

“Along the way, they started pulling out because most of them saw that they had a glass ceiling on the Saraki side. They started pulling out. We started in 1998. Where was Lai Mohammed in 1998? He was in Lagos.

“He came in 2003 to contest and went back. The other guy that was shouting was with Saraki. We remained here deliberately. We did not ask for anybody’s structure.

“We had people like Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, as well. He was with us. He was the first Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP. He has never been with Saraki. There were less than 10 of us. We deliberately continued to build our structure. In 2015, when Saraki moved to PDP, we left because we will not be part of it. We left the party for them. I moved out.

“I never contested for office, I was sponsoring candidates and building a party. I was even offered the position of Board of Trustees of the party. I refused. I said I have my business.

“Our goal was to change the system in the state. It was not until 2011 that we found ourselves in the ACN, but then ACN belonged to Asiwaju and Lai Mohammed was his frontman here. So, they had their candidate.

“We said let’s do free and fair primaries, they refused. Eventually, they threw us out and picked their own candidate.”

“The delegates were playing games so I stepped down to contest for Senate. I contested against Saraki. I believe they rigged the election.

“Many times, I have engaged with the traditional rulers, especially to say, let’s be accommodating, it will soon pass,” the governor said.

I remember that both the man in ADB and Okonjo Iweala among others were appointees of PDP. Their results were known too. To think that "an entirely new set of hands and minds" will descend from space, assume power and develop Nigeria, is utopian. Publisher and journalist Dele Momodu has re-entered politics and joined Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Momodu announced his move to the PDP in a statement, explaining that his decision was based on the need to contribute meaningfully to the development of the country.

“I have consulted widely. And it is clear to me that given the dangerous and disastrous drift that our nation has experienced in the past six years, the only party from which amends can be made to rectify our situation is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP),” he said in the statement released on Friday morning.

“This accords with my vehement opposition to the policies and practices of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and its leadership, which has denuded our country of everything we hold dear – national unity, cohesion, security, economic prosperity, educational advancement, social infrastructure, and above all, our cherished moral values.

“For these reasons, I am happy to declare that I am now a full-fledged participating member of the great and patriotic Peoples Democratic Party.

He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of failing in delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians, maintaining that the PDP has landmark achievements to show for their 16-year rule.

“It is deeply saddening and regrettable that some of the biggest and landmark achievements recorded under the PDP administration have been diluted, wasted, or diminished by the present APC government,” he added

Mukhtar Sani’s brother, Yunusa, had descended the ladder after a plumbing fix, when he looked up and noticed that the job was not perfect. So, he climbed the ladder again. This was when he slipped and fell, the impact causing damage around his neck and back.

What happened to him afterwards could never have been imagined in a government owned hospital, and it led to his death.


He was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, where he was attended to and was soon referred to the National Hospital Abuja (NHA) due to the complicated nature of the surgery he required.

The Interim Invoice issued to Sani, and obtained by HumAngle, showed his brother’s medication history. The cost of his treatment, which included an x-ray, amounted to N175,780.

The invoice also indicated that his brother had been in the hospital for four days, from Feb. 6, 2020, by 10:06 p.m. until his death on Feb. 9, 2020. He was registered as patient 660461 and stayed both in the old ward of the National Hospital and the new ward.

They had a challenge with raising N500,000 within the shortest possible time for the surgery he required.

Fortunately, Yunusa’s boss was able to provide the money. Sani then approached one of the doctors with the intention to pay for the surgery. To his surprise, he was given the account details of one of the doctors.

“I refused and asked for evidence that I was sending to the hospital account,” Sani explained. “I said I wasn’t going to send it to an organisation I didn’t know.”

Previous payments made, according to the Interim Invoice HumAngle consulted, revealed that for every service/drug prescription given to the patient, a section in the document listed the names of those who billed the patient, including two receipt details for a total number of 27 different services and drugs provided.

So, when it came to payment for surgery, Sani did not send the money to the private account given to him. His refusal to do as others did cost his brother, Yunusa, his life. He died while awaiting surgery, leaving a wife and three children.

But they found a convenient excuse for his death.

“They told us that they knew he wouldn’t survive, that was why they didn’t do the surgery,” Sani said.

“I’m still fighting to get his death certificate because we have gotten some kind of sponsorship for his children’s education.”

“I wrote an application to the medical director, but I still haven’t been given. In fact, they were unable to find his file in the entire hospital, so it’s even impossible to get hold of the record that will make it possible for me to get the death certificate. I took the file number and documents of everything we did, but they are unable to find it.”

This is just one in several cases of alleged corruption at the NHA.

Give a bribe or keep waiting

The procedure for booking appointments at the NHA stipulates that: “All bookings are done in the various clinics of the hospital by Health Record Officers on duty. Patients are expected to give their hand card to the Record Officer in charge so that he/she will indicate the day, time and the Doctor to see in the next appointment.”

But this procedure is only on paper. Some intermediary staff at the hospital have devised their own rules. Such was the case with Mr and Mrs Yakubu who were patients at the hospital recently.

The couple, like Mukhtar Sani’s case, were also referred to NHA in 2020 when their six-year-old son had tonsillitis.

“We were given a letter from Nisa Premier Hospital to give to the National Hospital because they had the required equipment for our son’s surgery,” Lucy Yakubu said.

At NHA’s pediatric section, a Record Officer (RA) collected their file and shelved it. The husband and wife then waited for over four hours, hoping they would be called in to see the doctor.

When the RA returned, the couple asked why they were left waiting for so long. But there was no apology because, according to the RA, “he had a lot of other things to attend to.”

Mr Yakubu then reminded the official that their situation was an emergency because their son had not eaten properly for three days and was in pain. But that was still not enough to sway the man.

“At that moment some people walked in and he quickly attended to them,” Mr Yakubu claimed, adding that the patient appeared to have bribed the RA.

Mr Yakubu’s suspicion was confirmed when he and his wife approached a nurse and she told them that staff at the hospital prefer to attend to those who give them money. “‘If you don’t, they won’t, the nurse told us,” he recalled.

Mr Yakubu and his wife returned to Nisa Premier Hospital and relayed the incident to a nurse. She prescribed antibiotics to their son and advised them to take a local approach.

“We diluted salt in water and added alum,” Mr Yakubu narrated. “That was what helped our son.”

His wife added that when she gave birth at NHA, nurses liked to be given money before they would call a doctor “to attend to us.”

Money paid into private accounts

A HumAngle reporter visited the Ophthalmology Department of NHA for an eye test with the help of another staff member.

When she went in, the doctor was attending to patients so she had to wait. When she was finally called in, he asked a few questions before the tests began.

There were two students present and the doctor conducted the test using a machine while simultaneously teaching the students.

When they were done, he took down her details and then negotiated a price with the hospital employee that brought her. He wrote down the prescription on a piece of paper and handed it to the HumAngle reporter.

This reporter was later issued medicated glasses after payment of over N30,000 was made into the private account of the doctor (name withheld).

“There are many acts of corruption to uncover in this hospital,” a staff member who pleaded anonymity told HumAngle. “In some places, you pay directly into the doctor’s private account.”

The source also explained that patients are required or expected to pay bribes when consulting doctors who have assistants. These assistants ensure patients give them some money before they have access to a doctor.

“Also, a particular female doctor at the hospital who has her own practice has the habit of referring patients to National Hospital. But instead of the patients paying to National Hospital for the use of its facilities, they still pay to her because she ensures that she personally attends to them,” the source revealed.

There are reported cases where doctors collude with hospitals to scam Nigerians through a referral kickback scheme, but the former case is different.

When HumAngle reached out to Segun Adetola, Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Health, he said he was not the right person to speak to regarding government hospitals in the capital. He directed HumAngle to the Ministry’s Director of Hospital Services, Dr Adebiyi Adebimpe.

But Dr Adepimbe asked HumAngle to write to the Minister of Health himself.

Meanwhile, the management of the NHA appeared to have received reports of corrupt practices among staff members. Tayo Haastrup, the facility’s Public Relations Officer, said NHA now has an e-payment system “which has really blocked these kinds of loopholes.”

Haastrup, who sent his response in text messages, added that the NHA has been running the e-payment system for about three years.

A source at the hospital agreed that, indeed, the e-payment system has helped to reduce corruption within the hospital, but added that staff members still find ways to engage in fraudulent practices.

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, SAN, has said the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has a strong political will to fight corruption in Nigeria.

Owasanoye said this during the presentation of a paper titled, ‘Anti-Corruption Legislations, Policies and Practices: How they Align with UNCAC, OECD Anti-Bribery Convention and other Regional Conventions on Preventing and Combating Corruption,’ at the 26th INTERPOL Global Programme on Financial Crimes and Assets Recovery in Abuja recently.

The ICPC Chairman, who was represented by ICPC’s Director of Operations, Mr. Akeem Lawal, stated that the Buhari regime was known for not interfering with the work of the anti-corruption agencies.

He also said the regime had been noted internationally to have a strong political will to fight corruption.

According to him, “Even if you are in his political party, he does not care. Go and answer the anti-corruption agencies. If you are free, you are free, if you are not, he doesn’t care. So he has a strong political will to fight corruption at this moment. Notwithstanding our internal challenges, we know this government to have the political will to fight corruption.”

He called for collective effort to ensure anti-corruption is institutionalised in Nigeria, adding that there was a need for strong institutions that would survive governments in order to make the fight against corruption a continuous one.

The Chairman also spoke on the need for principles, morals and good attitudes while stating that leaders had a role to play just like the followers.

“All of us are in this battle to ensure that corruption is brought to a standstill, and we do it in a manner that is logical and consistent with other international legislation and convention,” the ICPC boss declared.

The programme had in attendance officers from security agencies of different African countries.

The Permanent Secretary, State House, Umar Tijjani, said on Thursday that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had approved the construction and equipping of a 14-bed space Presidential Clinic at a cost of N21bn

Tijani stated this when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs, to present his 2022 budget proposal for consideration.

He explained that the construction firm, Messrs Julius Berger Nigeria, construct the VIP clinic.

He said the physical construction would start on November 1, 2021 and would be inaugurated on December 31, 2022.

The Permanent Secretary explained that the Presidential Clinic would contain 14-bed facilities with a total area of 2,700 square metres.

He added that there would be an underground, first floor, two operating theatres, two executive suites, two VIP wards, two Isolation wards and a six-bed isolation area in the building.

He further explained that there would be laboratory, healing garden, pharmacy, and X-ray facility in the clinic.

“It was estimated to cost about N21bn and the facility contains 14-bed space with a total area of 2, 700 square meters, there will be underground and first floor.

“Most of the preliminary works had been concluded. Mr President has approved the project. We have gone to the Bureau of Public Procurement to get a Certificate of No Objection.”

He told the committee that JBN was picked as the contractor because it built the State House and had been maintaining it since 1990.

“JBN has done a great job, and it was considered because of security reasons.”

He said the clinic would also be open to other African countries for medical treatment.

One of the members of the committee, Senator Nicolas Tofowomo, expressed dissatisfaction with the failure of the Permanent Secretary to show the committee any pictorial view of the hospital.

However, some other members of the committee led by the Chairman, Senator Danjuma La’ah, commended the initiative of the Federal Government for constructing and equipping of the Presidential Wing of the State House Clinic.

Former Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Isa Bio has dumped the All Progressives Congress party.

He defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Bio, also a former Minister of Transport, defected on Thursday, alongside his supporters at his Gure/Gwasoro ward in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.

DAILY POST reports that Bio, refused to go along with Dr Bukola Saraki when the former Senate President decamped to the PDP from the APC prior to the 2019 general elections.

Welcoming Bio to the PDP, the Kwara State Publicity Secretary of the party, Tunde Ashaolu, in a statement in Ilorin on Thursday, commended the Baruten born politician for taking the bold and timely decision to join the party.

He said ” the action reflects the wishes of Kwarans who are tired of the misrule of the Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq led administration.

“We are pleased to welcome former Minister Ibrahim Isa Bio and his followers into the Kwara PDP family.

” We applaud his voluntary bold and timely decision to dump the retrogressive and dysfunctional APC and pitch tent with our party that is moving from strength to strength,” he added.

The party spokesman said, as a respected community leader and experienced politician, the party has no doubt that the entry of Bio to the party, will further strengthen the PDP.

“The repositioned Kwara PDP is poised to reclaim power from the APC and deliver good governance to the people of Kwara,” he stated.

There is no single reason to back Tinubu presidency, either from his prior accomplishments since he took over Lagos with his "armies" , or to highlight any special skills, something Nigerian youths can hope to benefit them. Ahead of the 2023 general election, numerous members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State at the weekend defected to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The defected APC members, who were mainly youths from Ogidi Ward, the electoral ward of the serving Senator from Kwara Central, Dr. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe, accused the senator of non-performance since he was elected to the National Assembly, and the APC government in the state.

The youths, who spoke at the event, also said: “We had to retrace our steps as we were all deceived by cooked lies and propaganda against the former Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, in the last general election in the state.

“It’s now crystal clear that APC in 2019 was a one-chance vehicle that was out to deceive the Kwara people just to get into power.”

Receiving the defectors at the Banni Zone in Ogidi Ward, the newly elected PDP Chairman of Ilorin West, Alhaji Issa Abdulkadri, lauded the youths for taking their decision to return to the PDP in the state.

He said, the new PDP leadership in the state would provide them good leadership that would improve the socio-economic wellbeing of the masses if return to power in 2023.

While urging them to work with the party structure, he assured them of inclusiveness and team spirit so as to take the state to a greater height if the party takes over power in next elections.

Meanwhile, the state PDP Organising Secretary, Hajia Bilkisu Oniyangi, over the weekend charged women to justify their inclusion in party leadership.

In a statement issued in Ilorin, which was signed by Oniyangi after the meeting with the women leaders and other ward women leaders in Ilorin South Local Government Area, she said: “In the spirit of preparation towards reclaiming Kwara State from the ineptitude of the APC, the PDP would accord women and other stakeholders in the decision-making process in 2023.

“We urge the women to justify the confidence the leadership of the PDP has reposed in them for the women inclusiveness.”

The statement added: “The women were full of gratitude to Saraki and all the party leadership for the actualisation of 30 percent women affirmative in the leadership of the party across wards, LGAs and the state executives that produced an unprecedented woman as the state organising secretary of the party, in Nigeria politics.”

The statement, therefore, urged the women in the local government area to intensify their efforts in creating women awareness as well as mobilisation for the party ahead of the 2023 general election.

A member of the first family said there were efforts to convince the president to support a candidate that would protect his (Buhari’s) interest when he exits the presidency in 2023.

“We believe that Tinubu will not protect Buhari’s interest after his tenure, hence the need to look elsewhere.

“We are working hard to convince the president to support a candidate that would protect his interest after his tenure,” the source, who sought not to be named, said.

Similarly, a cabinet member said: “The president is not interested in Tinubu’s candidacy because he is not convinced that Asiwaju is the right person to succeed him.”

Daily Trust reports however that Tinubu has not formally declared his intention to contest for the presidency but different groups are openly campaigning for him

As part of measures to whittle down the influence of Tinubu in the South-West, the ruling APC has continued to bring in people who are perceived to be opposed to the former Lagos State governor.

A former governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, whose second term bid in 2019 Tinubu worked against, was on Tuesday named as a member of the contact and strategy committee of the party.

Aside Ambode, the party has harvested top shots in the South-West political zone, including a former deputy governor of Osun State, Iyiola Omisore; a former governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel, and former Speaker Bankole, among others.

There are reports that they were cajoled by the APC towards demystifying Tinubu ahead of 2023.

Talking about the relationship between Buhari and Tinubu, a source in the presidency said: “President Buhari has never had a cordial relationship with Asiwaju.

“He just believes that the former governor of Lagos State should be used to achieve his ambition. After the 2015 elections, you will recall that Asiwaju was abandoned.

“He was brought close again before the 2019 elections. So, there is no need to worry about their relationship. It is the same scenario that is playing out,” he said.

A ranking APC lawmaker also told Daily Trust that the president was not happy with happenings in the South-West even as he accused Tinubu of doing nothing visible to quench the rising agitations in the region.

“I can bet you the president will not come out openly to support him (Tinubu) to become president even though the former Lagos State governor believes that this is payback time considering the huge investment he made in Buhari and the APC.

“Also, the president has had reservations about Tinubu’s personality because he sees him like any other politician in the country. But he became suspicious of him when Tinubu started claiming the title of a national leader of the party after the 2015 elections.

“As you know, the national leader of a ruling party should be the president. You know, the former Lagos governor is arrogant and the president is stubborn, the two cannot go together,” he said.

Efforts to get the reaction from the presidency were not successful as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, did not reply to a text message sent to him after phone calls.
