testional: . One love Pchax, Please, is that any means you may assistance me with IETLS practical materials, Please ,am in need of it I don't have any. Thanks I did not use any practice materials because they just want to know how good you are with English. So I just google "IELTS free online practice" and I did a two tests from what I saw online on the week of the tests. The reason why I did so was not to jack as such but just to get familiar with the format of the test questions. For IELTS all you need to know is: ❖There are 4 sections that carry the same weight- Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening ❖ The major test takes place on Saturdays but the speaking test comes earlier. ❖ You would be graded on a scale of 9 for each tests and your overall score is the average. Most schools require 6.0/9.0 ❖ If you have been speaking English since primary school, you do not need to jack. This does not mean you do not need to prepare. Just practice a few free tests online. Best of luck, bro! |

VickyRotex: yea i get you. what am saying is am a grad of comp sci aswel. although, i did comp eng in my 3rd/final year.more like a change of course. And thats what my certificate reads. and since am applying with a Bsc Comp Sci, then its samething with yours. the only thing that makes mine M.Eng is the fact that i intend going for Information security. of which most schools i see, state it as M.Eng or MASC. while comp science is Msc. You welcome. One last thing. Now that you mentioned Information Security as a research area you are interested in, do not be too narrow minded on it. If you see a school that has something related as a research area maybe Cryptography, Datawarehousing, Digital Forensics and any other area that can be linked to Information Security and their school fees is cheap, and you have good prospects of being funded or accepted by a lecturer, grab that school. What I mean is that it doesn't necessarily have to be information security. Yeah! People on this thread are so helpful. Some times I wonder if they are Nigerians . The help I get from here for my TRV application is so immense and it is part of what motivates me to help others based on my little experience with the admission process. yippeee! my offering comes in may 3 Likes |

VickyRotex: wooow... this would go a long way. and help me to narrow my search. we are in same field.. *computer science*. i meet up the requirement of the 2:1, and i criously dont want a school with the GRE thing. i wanna start january or may.. hope its not too late for may.? thanks. We are not on the same field my dear. You studied Computer Engineering, I studied Computer Science. Your Masters is M.Eng or ME mine is an MSc. Our research field interests are very wide apart at such a higher level so I wouldn't be of much help to narrow down your search for you. Just hop on google and do your due diligence. I have noticed you have two schools in mind. Just google "University of theSchoolYouHaveInMind Computer Engineering Department". From the first result, you would see their Admission Requirements (if you need GRE or not), Tuition, Research Areas, Professors etc. Trust me, it is not that hard. If you want to know more universities in Canada just google something like "Top 50 Universities in Canada". From the list check their Computer Engineering Departments and see for yourself what they expect from you. About the GRE thing, off the top of my head (I might be wrong) the following schools do not need it for Computer Science Msc: UBC, SFU, McGill (but they don't take MSc Winter applications for computer science. It pained me!), Windsor, Calgary, USacks, Guelph, Dalhouise, etc. About starting in January. Hmmmm.... Many schools winter deadline if I remember correctly is end of september. Have you done IELTS? Some schools might waiver it but I did it just to boost my application package. Just target May or August. But note that not all schools have May admissions so if you want May, you have to filter the list of schools to those that take May. 2 Likes |

VickyRotex: lols. pchax, that was one lovely sermon. it sure would go a long way. thought i'd be good to go with those two schools. But i guess i got to make a wider search. are you in canada? as for the offering, dont worry it would come soon... when am in canada tho. lol I am not in Canada. Just got admission to start my Masters in Computer Science in University of Windsor In January. I am compiling my document for my Study Visa application. There are lots of questions you need to answer before you make a decision: ❖ When do I want to start? ❖ What area of research intrigues me and does the department have such a research area? ❖ My GPA, does it match their requirement? (A 2nd class upper is good enough for most schools) ❖ Do I really want to write GRE (I did not want to so I looked for schools that did not need it. Trust me, most schools don't). ❖ How much can popsi/uncle/boyfriend/sugar daddy afford for tuition and what are the prospects for Teaching/Research Assistantship. ❖ Does the cost of living in the city make sense? (I read that Vancouver is one of the most expensive cities in North America). These and many others are questions that you need to consider. Some of them, you need to ask yourself, some you need to ask the graduate school directly and the remaining, you blast it out on NL. There are lots of good people on this thread. would be waiting in windsor for my offering 2 Likes |

VickyRotex: HI! I guess this is just the right time for me on this thread, and i believe il testify very soon. cudnt read everything on this thread, but with the little i read, i guess there've been more of success You do not read everything on this thread because topics around here focus more on the visa application process than on the admission process. There are some sites that give you a deep insight into the admission process. personally, I used gradcafe.com (don't be intimidated by their americanized high CGPAs and GRE scores. VickyRotex: ... Am a grad of comp Eng. I plan going for my masters in canada, tho two schools on my mind. Am considering giving it to an agent, but a friend said i can process it myself. truth is i dont know how to go about it. and the fact that am kinda busy, i dont know if working it myself would go a long way. i need advices and ideas on how to go about it. Thanks in anticipation. Your friend spoke the gospel truth and I would repeat it, YOU DO NOT NEED AN AGENT. I know you are busy and might probably have a tight schedule but dedicating an hour everyday too research about those two schools' computer engineering departments and sending mails to their graduate offices wouldn't hurt. Just have a firm believe behind your mind that you would get the admission. A few thoughts that would help are: 1) These schools seek international students because we bring in a lot of MONEY. 2) They also seek cultural diversity. They pride themselves in that for some reasons I don't understand. So, just carry that mindset that you are sought after. Before I end my sermon, permit me to kindly chip in that applying to 2 schools only might not necessarily be the best ideas except you have professors in those schools that have offered to take you. I would recommend at least four schools. One incredible gangstar school, one school in an incredible lively area, one cheap school and one school as the spirit leads. Just makes sure that the common denominator in these schools is that their Computer Engineering Departments match your research interests. #EndOfSermon. Offering Time 5 Likes |

Hello good people of Nairaland, I have been cooking up a plan that involves 2 sponsors and I would like to tap into the experience of folks here to know if the plan would fly. My Dad is the Primary sponsor and he is capable of sponsoring me throughout my stay. He has paid the school fees (resumption is January) and his SOA is above 10M (I don't know the exact amount and the closing balance and it is fixed deposit). I also hope to throw in some share certificates in there. The trouble I have is that he is retired and he is not working so he doesn't have a proof of current employment and he doesn't own any business. Consequently, I decided to approach my inlaw (my sister's father in-law). He owns a business and he gave me his SOA (which closes at 5.5M. I noticed it was pretty high before. I mean 50M kind of high). I would not want to bother him(because we are not that close) with things like proof of ownership of business, tax clearance certificates, proof of how he is related to me etc. So I decided he would be my secondary sponsor (I don't know if such a term exists or applies to visa applications) because I assume that as secondary sponsor, you do not need to submit much documents. Just a declaration should suffice. So good people of obodo Nairaland, I crave your indulgence to ask some questions: 1) Would using a co-sponsor make the application more complicated (as it may raise doubts about my Dad's true ability to sponsor me) or would it re-enforce my application (cos it shows access to more funds and more people are willing to support)? 2) Would using a co-sponsor increase the time of processing application? 3) Is there anything like secondary and primary sponsor (I heard it somewhere. Not just sure). 4) Should I just drop the co-sponsor ish and stick with my dad? Why? 5) Am I crazy Thanks in anticipation of your pieces of advice. 2 Likes |

Lonewolf001: pls guys i need help with what the layout of an e-mail to a potential supervisor for an msc program should look like @siga and other gurus your input is needed. thanx I guess I can add my 2 cents based on what I did. The first thing you need to know is that these professors receive dozens of emails every day so make it as brief and catching as possible starting from your subject. Some professors state what subject the mail must be so carefully check the profile of the professor if he has such a restriction. If not, something like "PROSPECTIVE MASTERS STUDENT IN [insert research area]. Your first paragraph should be about introducing yourself, where you schooled, GPA and course of study, and the term you wish to start your Msc. Your next paragraph would be how I found out about the professor and his research work and any experience you have had in that area. Your third (and advisably the final paragraph) should be about how your interests match and how it would be a honour to work with him if he has any opening for a MSc student. Mind you, don't be disappointed if they do not reply you. You can try again some days later. Best of luck. 2 Likes |

pchax: : OP never said: Acidosis: I agree with you to a certain level but I doubt if they are mocking our degrees. If you notice, the 2:1/1st class thingy is a criteria for fresh graduates. If you don't have it, then show that you have the skills through certifications or what have you. Honestly, 2:1/1st class just gives you a foot into the door. they don't help you keep the job. Corporate Organizations know that. Btw, many degrees in Nigeria are not "hard earned" in my opinion (I guess that is another discussion for another day) Acidosis: Are you suggesting that government should pass a legislation that bans all job adverts specifying only 2:1 and 1st class? What do you think is the right thing that government should do? To change the hiring policies of corporate organizations? Acidosis: I agree with you on that and personally I don't see any harm in "poaching" the microscopic few (assuming we can refer to the millions off 2:1's and 1st class graduates as microscopic.). Companies around the world do that. Google, Microsoft, facebook etc... They look for the "microscopic few" (that are skilful though) Acidosis: Please what is happening then. I am genuinely interested in knowing. Acidosis: I agree with you on that perfectly. The economic should be diversified to the extent that even a WAEC certificate should earn you a honest and respectable living. Thanks for making good and opposing points not just repeating the "Education level doesn't determine success in life" rhetoric. |

OP never said: 1. You can not be successful in life without a 2.1 or first class 2. You can not get a job without 2.1 or 1st class 3. God's grace is not needed in the job market 4. Only dull people make less than a 2.1 5. Success in life is a function of what grade you make. Rather, OP said: 1. Making a 2.1 or 1st class improves your chances of getting a job in the corporate world. 2. Corporate Organizations are constantly seeking graduates with 2.1 or 1st class. 3. Making a 2.1 in University is not rocket science. Just be diligent and hardworking [s](which I earlier disagreed with cos my school makes it look like rocket science)[/s] What OP wrote is clear and it is a fact. Many of you that are coming up with the "Only God gives Job", "Educational qualification doesn't correlate to success in life" rhetoric are clearly missing the point and should go read OP's post again. If you think what OP said is not true or not fact-based kindly make your own post that can be as informative and clear as that of OPs. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Am going to 300l now with a CGPA of 3.26,pls guys,do u think it is still possible for me to graduate with 2.1? Am ready to work harder in my 300l and 400l. I really want to graduate with 2.1,am studying sociology. Hope for a reply soon. Thanks guys Dude! Do your due dilligence. We can not make an informed decision based on "I am going to 300L and I am studying Sociolgy in a Fed Uni in the South East" for the following reasons: 1. We do not know if you have a carry over course or not. 2. We do not know the grading scheme of your Uni. Is it 3.26/5.00 or 3.25/7.00. 3. We do not know the amount of courses needed for your to finish up and their respective weights. 4. We do not know if you have entered some kind of trouble with a lecturer in your department. 5. We do not know.... See, there are a lot of factors that can make you not to finish with a 2.1. So the only person that can answer that question is yourself. Get an excel sheet, input all the courses you need to do to finish school. Fill them all up with A's and see if you finish with a 3.50 and above. If yes, then you can finish with a 2.1 idealistically. Realistically, set targets for yourself. Your destiny is in your hands bro not in the advice of a random stranger on NL. Best of luck! 1 Like |

In my school, those type of people would barely survive the first year. I have a solid academic background (All distinctions in WAEC with a couple of good Maths Olympiad performances), I am quick at learning, I work hard and I managed to finish with a 3.56 (was never on a 2.1 until my last semester). Since this Windsor prosfessor and I have been discussing research-related things for quite a while, and she asked me to apply, I decided a bird in hand is better than UBC in the forest (at least for masters level).
