Hi peeps... This e family is growing larger by the day.. Was thinking we could Organise a Canada nairaland meet up.. Something like insta meet for instagram where members meet up for picture project lol, but this would be for drinks or dinner... Maybe like once a year in major cities like Toronto, Lagos, etc... Would be nice to meet and chat with forum members around your city about experiences and challenges etc....... Just a thought...

I'm in! I'm in!! I'm in!!!
Did I just mention, I'm in!

Glad it could help you. I hope others who got theirs recently can follow suite.
The more we crowd source these SOPs the more accyrate we get when applying. I guess that's what online communities are for.

Hello Fam, can I get a VISA without paying school fees to your intending? Also, if am given admission and VISA how long can I stay in Canada without paying my school fees?

Waiting for your response.

Thanks

I got mine without paying my fees.

You can stay as long as the fee payment date (which is unique to your school) expires.

MY CASE

I finished Nysc last month, I do not have a job yet, my sop centers around coming back to nigeria to help the government after my studies, applying the skills acquired to solve naija problem my focus being fundamental nigeria problems.(Corruption, transportation, kidnappings and co)
. Please help me o, dis is the remaining aspect of my application that is still inconclusive.

Thank you all.

Fresh Graduate, no problem I guess. I read somewhere that a year after leaving school may not need much docs to show gainful employment. If you really want to prove you have been doing some work in your field even before you graduated, you can out that in your CV. But left to me, you are cool if you graduated this year and you do not have a job.

Cheers!

congratulation to you, good news like dis always inspires me. pls how did u go about frm the beginning d steps n plans you made, pls I have same dream

Glad I could be a source of inspiration. Below is the broad summary of steps I took:

1. Got a list of the "top 30 schools" in canada. Google it.
2. Checked the comp sci departments of each school and filtered out schools based on my own personal preferences. Eg. I did not want to write GRE, so I removed schools that needed GRE as part of their admission requirements.
3. Trimmed down the list and started sending mails out.
4. Caught the attention of a Prof and we corresponded for up to 2 months before she agreed to be my supervisor.
5. Sent application for admission to school and I was accepted and assigned a supervisor and research group.
6. Did some research on TRV applications (read a lot of SOPs on different fora, went through CIC rules etc ) while gathering my documents.
7. Applied for TRV online sat through the long anxious wait.

I guess the rest is history. Just allow God to guide you in each step cos the way I did it would not likely be the way you should do it. Wishing you the best. Cheers!

omo pchax, abeg i have been on this issue since, when i saw 'research group' i say make i ask you.

abeg i have been trying to get a supervisor/course advisor ooooo, but omo nothing oooo, i almost done even send email to all the staff for the dept of compt. sci. @ UofM, e go remain like 3. i don right here tire nothing. the only advice i got was to try regina, but guy i wan stick with this one baba, abeg help if you can.i need am for the admission

Abeg no stalk the lecturers ooo... It is not everyone that has a research group before getting admission. Infact, most people do not. But if you insist on getting a supervisor before admission be ready for a lot of "email snubs" and you also need to widen your scope of unis. Do not just focus on one Uni. The fact that UofM profs did not reply you doesn't mean you should not go ahead and apply. Also, if you have a guy in that Uni, tell him to put in a word for you.

There is no full proof template of email to send for a prof to reply you but just keep it short, be specific and polite. State your research interests. Show you have read their profile and some of their papers, ask if they have space for a MSc or PhD student (which ever the case may be for you) in their research group for the upcoming semester.
May God crown your efforts with replies and admissions.

Cheers!

The solution to the fear expressed quoted below is not too hard.
Those who have had their TRV may assist in posting SOP here after carefully removing their personal details. After all, they have nothing to loose
in the event of a copy and paste by a mentally lazy applicant.
Only the applicant who does a robotic reproduction has everything to loose.
I have a strong believe that with a dozen volunteers of excellent SOP as advised , this forum will be helped immeasurable.
Best wishes to all.
"EIDT: Someone noted below that this can give room to plagiarism. Using the example I cited of my SOP to gain admission, I believe no serious person can plagiarize because even if you want to copy the style and format, you would still need to put in your own words."

Thank you soji0509 for that. I wish more people did this. When I came to this forum, I was looking for sample SOPs that Nigerians write. I couldn't get one. During my search for sample SOPs I stumbled upon different forums form different countries (Kenya, Bnagladesh, Pakistan, UK etc) where I came in contact with dozens of SOPs after going their threads. I even posted a tip I found on a Kenyan site some few months back on how to write SOPs. The overall template I applied for my application was taken from a Pakistani site.

I just wish more people could post SOPs here to really help others and give them an idea of how SOPs in particular and the application package in general is structured. Thanks.

Good Afternoon.

I collected my passport yesterday with the Visa on it. Thanks to God! Also, I appreciate this community for letting me "disturb" them with some bogging questions. Details of my application are below.

BACKGROUND AND TMELINE:

I submitted online on the 28th of September and did my biometrics the next day.
I used a sponsor (my dad) and a co-sponsor (my brother in-law).

DOCUMENTS:
❖ My Sponsor's Letter (SOA: 12M Fixed Deposit)
❖ My Co-Sponsor's Letter (SOA: 5M Corporate Account)
❖ My Letter

NOTABLE EXCEPTIONS AND RISKS TAKEN:
1. Did not submit my SOA
2. Did not submit my NYSC Certificate
3. Scanned all the documents with my Tablet with poor lighting. Had to photo edit each document to make it readable atleast.
4. Did not pay school fees
5. Non of the documents were notarized neither was an affidavit sworn. They were all on plain A4 sheets. My sponsor had no letter head (retired and not working). My co-sponsor had a letter head.

Please feel free to ask any questions concerning the application package. I saw the format that I employed in the application on a Pakistani forum where TRV hopefuls meet.

Once again, thank you all and wishing us all more TRVs. I give all glory to God.

Now who is joining me in ethopian airlines on the 26th? cheesy

EDIT: I no get access to my NL email. Abeg no vex if you send me PM and I no reply.

That will be counter productive as it will give room to plagiarism.

I see where you are coming from and I appreciate your response.

To start with, the SOPs would be redacted so if anyone wants to copy it verbatim it would be at his/her own detriment. Also, anyone who is ready to plagiarize a letter that is stating why he should be granted a Visa is not ready for that Visa. Rather than it giving room to plagiarism, I believe it would give people more ideas of how to go about writing an SOP. Cos as it stands now, not many people have access to SOPs so they have limited knowledge on what is acceptable and appropriate on an SOP.

Once again, thanks for raising that salient point.
Travel / Re: Travelling To Canada Part 6 by pchax: 9:50pm On Dec 02, 2014
Good Evening.

The recent trend in acceptance of TRV applications has been disturbing and I have been thinking of how we can improve that as a community. Having seen the documents that some people submitted, every thing looks intact and the financials look juicy except for one variable that can not be measured quantitaively - Statement of Purpose. Honestly, I believe we would be receiving higher approval rates if we submit very quality SOPs along with our applications.

I am a fan of the open source paradigm and I believe in crowd-sourcing to make impact. Having said that, the method by which we help others review SOPs on this thread can be improved on. Presently, the applicant sends a PM to a member of the thread and asks for review. The member gives his/her comments about the SOP. This one-to-one mapping would not foster collaborative development. Apart from that, some wrong pieces of advice can be given through PM (innocently and with no bad intentions) and the applicant would swallow it hook, line and sinker.

So what am I proposing, I believe SOPs should be published openly and those who are kind enough to review can do that and post their observations on the thread. The applicant can now get a mental aggregate or summary of all the observations and prepare a better version. Before I continue, the published SOP must be redacted so as not to reveal any personal information or any information that can make anyone trace who you are. You might be asking if it wouldn't consume much space on the thread if it is posted here. No it wouldn't because the applicant would post a link to the redacted SOP. To post a link to a document you need to host it in a cloud storage ish like Google Drive or DropBox.

Many forums like this in other countries use this method. Popular sites like reddit and gradcafe users use this review their applications and SOP. I believe it would help produce higher quality SOPs and Letters and foster collaborative learning as other people can pick up ideas.

For example, this is my redacted SOP I used to apply for admission. Everyone can read it and give pieces of advice as they deem fit. And more importantly, everyone can also vet the pieces of advice that is being given.

Thank you and wishing us more approvals!

EIDT: Someone noted below that this can give room to plagiarism. Using the example I cited of my SOP to gain admission, I believe no serious person can plagiarize because even if you want to copy the style and format, you would still need to put in your own words.

STORY TIME

As I was leaving the Visa office yesterday after submitting my passport, a police Van double crossed me while I was waiting for Obalende Bus just by Oando filling station. 2 men were inside, 2 were siting in the covered boot panel and they all had assault rifles. They demanded I hand over all the documents in the black folder I was carrying. I promptly did that cos I did not want whahala. They were going through all the documents and they asked for my name. I told them. They now said "so you sef wan travel", I kept mute. They asked where I work. By then I had regained my confidence from the early shock and I decided to play "humility" with them. I told them "your boy is trying to push it on the streets ooo.... No real job yet". That was when the two that were sitting at the back jumped down and demanded I enter the van. There and then, I knew the answer I gave them about where I work was the wrongest because with my faded jeans and t-shirt they would have assumed I was a "runs guy" trying to do some shady deals around the embassy. I stood my ground tough. Luckily for me, the man searching my papers came across my NYSC certificate and said "ooo... you be corper sef". I agreed to being a corper. And he gestured for the 2 that wanted to take me into the van to stop. They kept on demanding for my International Passport and honestly, I did not have it on me. They even ransacked the file I was carrying to look for it. To cut the long story short, they wasted like 5 minutes of my time before they left and they gave me back all my documents.

Has anyone had such an experience with them around that area before?

My advice now to those going to the embassy is to dress responsibly. Because I believe they profiled me to go after me cos I dressed in a "runs guy"way (a pair of jeans that has seen better days and a black t-shirt 3 times my size with some heavy grafitti inscriptions in front). Also, no matter what happens, never hand over your passport to anyone.

May God guide us all and keep us safe.

Good Morning and have a fruitful day!

@pchax congratulations on your TRV

please can anyone from the university of windsor confirm the following

1. how long does does it take the university to process an admission application.

2. if transcripts must be sent directly to the university or scanned copies are accepted.

3. if the letter of acceptance is sent via e-mail or regular post and if a deposit is required before sending the letter.

Thanks. Not collected my passport though. smiley

1. Took slightly more than 2 months.

2. Send transcripts directly to Uni. Scanned copies are acknowledged but a decision on your admission wouldn't be made until you send the REAL thing. Signed and Sealed.

3. The letter of acceptance is sent via post but there is a way around it. It takes like 7 weeks after an offer of admission has been made. But I did not have 7 weeks to start processing my Visa. So I contacted the graduate studies secretary for my department to please scan the letter and send it to me via mail before she packages it to send via post. I used the scanned copy to process my subsequent Visa application. I received the physical copy of my admission letter like 3 weeks after I submitted my Visa application.

Best of luck bro!

Hi Guys,
Got a mail from UofM saying my app has been reviewed fr eligibility, however b4 referring me to d selection committee, dey need info on d no of lecture hours per credit unit (for some requisite courses in my transcript).. Dey asked for my uni's website, which I sent and included my HOD's contact details..
Pls does any1 knw hw many lecture hours make up a credit unit in a typical Nig Uni? Wanna contact my HOD ahead wiv d right info b4 dey do cuz he fit go do guesswork if he doesn't knw.

I dunno about your former Uni, but in my former Uni, the units attached to a course determines the lecture hours per week. So a 4 Unit course, is 4 lecture hours per week (either 1 hour for 4 days, 2 hours for 2 days or 2 hours and 2 1-hours for 3 days). If you know the requisite courses they are asking for, you can check your potential school's undergrad website for those courses and their units and use that to compare to your former uni.

Good morning everyone, I need your candid advice. I got a spring admission last week with a scholarship of 15,500. All glory to God.

However, I am on the verge of loosing that admission because my parent doesn't have fat account to show though that scholarship has covered all expenses, tuition, accomodation, and all. If I will need to add to that scholarship it shouldn't be more than 500-1000Cad. I have no rich uncle or aunt who could pose as my sponsor just to get the visa.

My dad,s financial standing as at when we had family meeting after I broke the goodnews was about 200k but he said he should have an inflow of 3M for a year.My dad spoke about loan but we don't know If he would be granted My mum has only 72,000 though with an inflow of about 1million because she is a thrift collector. I just finished helping my mum draft her request for loan letter from cooperative. She requuested a loan of 300k.And personally, I can raise 500k on my own cos I work . My monthly pay is 30k and I save very well

I want all the experts here to come to my rescue. Do I stand a chance at all or I should just forget about this? I am so confused right now about the financial aspect of this. Somebody help me!!

Hello Sir, Happy Sunday!

Firstly, congratulations on your admission. The funding is juicy cheesy

Your case is interesting and I know it would work out well at the end. Just to add my 2 cents as I trust the other gurus would chip in their own useful nuggets (***looks at Oga Siga***). Is it possible to get a job in the Uni now? Maybe you can talk to the Careers department of the school or something like that. I guess, a job and your scholarship without worrying your folks can convince the VOs that you are financially stable to take care of yourself.

Just to help brighten your day, I have seen someone get TRV without scholarship and a SOA of 2.4M (he had paid full school fess though). Cheers!
