mrnilobrawn: I think he was refering to that of trv, but its up to him to clearify.I just went through his post history and it is for TRV. He already has admission. Deleting my former post now. |
mrnilobrawn: Is this for your trv application or admission? That's my Statement of Purpose for my admission. Do we need SOP for TRV application too? Was that what the OP needed ni? I'm in process of gathering documents for my TRV. |
beejaybrave: Guys please I need someone to be kind and email me an instance of a SOP that won the show....borriclarry@gmail.com![s]Hello, here is my SOP in pdf format for MSc in Computer Science with research focus on Data Mining/Machine Learning. Kindly note that I have been in correspondence (via mail) with a professor in that field for the past 5 months before I submitted my application. The professor had already accepted to take me as her student before I sent my application. Nevertheless, I hope it helps you. Cheers![/s] MODIFICATION: Apologies. I thought you were asking for SOP for admission. |
Hello, thanks for responding to my question on if fixed deposit accounts can be used. Just for clarification sake, I did not get the info that fixed deposit can't be used on NL. It was someone else that told me ("beer parlour" talk thingy). Please permit me to verify another "myth" I heard "on the streets". Is it true that including landed property and land documents can delay your processing time because the embassy may need to verify each of those documents and the more documents they need to verify, the longer your process takes. This myth makes some sense but is it true? Thanks. |
Jennydoris: 1. Never Deprive your spouse with attention, Love andGood nuggets but your style of writing hurts my eyes. Writing Like This Is Not Normal Even When Writing Titles. |
vanrichie4u: Dude use ur dad's statement of account, I'm in the same situation as u, I wonder why ppl here say such about fixed deposit, what if the amount in d fixed deposit is "HUGE" resulting to higher monthly dividends as compared to another applicant with a current/ savings account with just 5mil would d VO prefer option A or B, abeg fixed deposit, current or savings account all the same, what matters is that the account is capable of paying your bills. My own opinion. Thanks a lot. I also wonder why people say thattoo. Maybe we should ask them. Abeg, can we use a statement of account from a fixed deposit account?. No vex say the font big. |
I am surprised that I have not seen the most popular non-conventional use of toothpaste that I know of, to clean CDs/DVDs that have scratched. Works like magic! |
akanni: Hi pally, I am not sure that balance in your bro in law's account will satisfy the VO.Statement from a fixed deposit account is good, if you can throw in some landed docs, share certificates, etc would be fine.If you've already paid for the whole tuition and accommodation for the whole period of your masters then, it could be ok.You need evidence to show your relationship with sponsor, evidence of the job he/she does, 6 months statement not 3, letter from sponsor stating reason for sponsoring you, also wanna know how you paid the tuition, you working? Thanks for your response. My dad is the real sponsor but most of his cash is in fixed deposit. His major current account goes up and down since he doesn't buy into the idea of just stashing huge money in your account except it is in fixed deposit. He has paid tuition and accommodation. I used my bro in law cos his own is not in fixed deposit (I do not know where I got the idea that they don't accept money in fixed deposit). Also, someone also warned me against using landed property and share certificates because they would want to verify the authenticity thereby delaying the processing during verification. I guess I would switch back to my dad as major sponsor and use his statement of account cos it is much more than my bro inlaw's own. Thanks for all your tips. |
Hello everyone. Thanks for your support. I am to resume in January 2015 for my masters and I am putting together my student visa application at the moment. I am doing it the online way and here is a list of documents I have gathered (or intend to gather as the case may be) apart from the application forms I downloaded online: 1. Admission Letter 2. Proof of payment of fees and accommodation 3. Letter from my school/supervisor that I may need to work in the school (Research Assistant/ Lab Assistant ish) 4. Police report 5. Brother-in-law Bank Statement of 3.5 million in the past 3 months (which is also bound to increase) 6. Letter from Brother in law stating in he would sponsor me. 7. Birth Certificate I am not satisfied with the list because it looks pretty short and I feel like something is missing. Do I need to include educational credentials like Transcript? I already have a supervisor and she has arranged a summer job for me that would give me some level of income, do I need a letter to that effect too? Can I tender a statement of account from a fixed deposit account? Thanks a lot for your anticipated response. |
Hello folks, Abeg, from your experience, does craze often catch the login module of the cic.gc.ca website? I opened an account yesterday and I tried to login in today and it was saying my userID is invalid. Tried to open another account with the same userID and it said the ID has been taken? Later tried to login and it went once but it is not recognizing my document checklist ID. Abeg, did any of you experience these abnormalities too ![]() |
Gbengadan: Good day peeps, I am new on this thread. My name is Oluwagbenga, graduated from OAU in Ife and planning to get a masters degree in canada and i need info or tips on how to go about that. ThanksDo your due diligence. Go on the internet and get information on what you want to study, what schools are appropriate for you, what exams you need to take, admission requirements, resumption dates etc. |
Siga: ...Visa application is case by case basis... some take less than 2months... some longer... I can't realy give an average... it depends on how u package ur application.... How much verificationt they need to do and how fast they get back to them.... and it depends on how quick u get what they request done....Thanks for the info. I am grateful. |
ElCapt: Hey.Oh.. Thanks! That is better news. |
Siga: ... Up to 21 weeks.... Take note of the Up to.... Doesnt mean urs will be 21 weeks... It means they have up to 21 weeks...Thanks a lot sir! Please, from your experience, how long does it take on the average? Thanks! |
Good morning! Going through www.gic.gc.ca, I noticed it takes 21 weeks for a student visa application to be processed in Lagos. Please tell me it is a typo? I thought it is all online so why that long? |
vanrichie4u: After completing the online application, u would be requested to go down to their office for biometrics(It takes just a day). For the other question...fellows in da house with better knowledge will put u through. Thanks a lot. I have been combing through past Canadian threads on NL and I must admit that I now a decent view of the TRV process. There is a huge mine of good information in those old threads. Nevertheless, would continually post here on unclear things. I saw some people mention police report. Abeg, is it compulsory? Thanks! |
Fortissimo: Wow! Your post is quite an eye opener. I've already narrowed my choices down to about 13 schools. Most require GRE. Considering my CGPA, would you suggest that I contact the schools' admin departments first, to ascertain their acceptance of a 2nd class upper degree? From your expose, I believe this is the starting point. To be honest, I am jealous of your CGPA . You stand a good chance with that 4.xx/5.00 because many of these grad secretaries do not know the range of our grading systems. Grading schemes differ and that is a huge problem when it comes to assessing a result. Also, maybe the University stated 2.1 as entry level for Masters but the level of competition for that course might mean a 2.1 doesn't stand a chance thanks to some crazy chinese and indian nerds. I don't really know why but she said "let me be honest with you, try other options because you did not make a first class". Other secretaries from other schools were like "Of course, just send your blah blah blah".Furthermore, when I was exchanging mails with the professor that latter accepted me, when she reviewed my transcript she was like "I can see many Cs and Es and that is not good". What saved me was my class rank. I told her I graduated in the top 5% of my class of 160 students. That was when she accepted my results. My course adviser also wrote a letter of recommendation for me to back the fact that I graduated in the top 5% of my class. In summary, your GP is cool. If you feel it is not good enough, use class rank. Tell your former lecturers to mention it in their LORs. Mind you, GP is not everything though. Your SOP, LORs and sometimes Resumes count but if a professor agrees to take you in ahead of time, you have a very high probability of getting accepted (i would say 95% chance). Another trick you can play is to apply for phd straight and they "downgrade" you to masters cos your "GP was not high enough for phd". Cheers! |
Fortissimo: ...A peculiarity for admissions into research based programmes is the need to contact and obtain a go ahead from a prospective supervisor in the university of choice. I also want to write GRE and possibly IELTS to make my application as competitive as possible. I graduated with a CGPA of 4.03/5.00.Hello, mind if I suggest just ONE thing? START CONTACTING YOUR POIs NOW! I just gained admission to start my computer sceince masters in Winter 2015 and this is what I did. Got a list of the top 50 Universities. You can filter out universities on a lot of criteria. Personally, I didn't want to take GRE so I looked at the admission requirements of the top 50 canadian schools and looked for the ones that don't need GRE. That narrowed the list down to like 30. I then started sending mails to the graduate secretaries stating my GPA and some were honest with me that they only take 1st class from Nigeria (I graduated with a 3.56/5 btw). That narrowed down my list to around 20. I then fully concentrated on those 20 and looked at tuition. I removed the top 5 most expensive. From those 15 unis, I searched their computer science department for lecturers who's research interests me and I sent them mails. This was the most disappointing part because I got a response rate of about 5%. Only 2 letcurers said I should go ahead and apply and only one accepted me as a student after many rounds of exchange of mails. I wrote IELTS during this period and put my application together. I applied to only one university and I was successful to the Glory of God. Mind you, my method took me 18 months cause I started when I was in final year and I am about finishing youth service. So you might not generally follow my model put I hoped you picked out one or two things that can make your timeline more feasible. Best of luck! |
Hello NL! Please a quick question. I have just been granted admission to start Masters in a University in Ontario. I have visited the cic website and I have seen that the documents needed are divided into 3 broad categories: Proof of Identity, Proof of Acceptance and Proof of Financial Support. Can I kindly get a rough break down of the financial support part? Like how much is needed? Can I do the application fully online from start to finish? Thanks. |
Nice read although I doubt many people would have the patience to finish it up. Can you kindly post the links to where we can get the actual research papers so I could evaluate their methodology? I ask this because sometimes, we scientist often have a biased approach towards research. For example, we may use a small sample space to make a broad and bold generalization. For those of you who don't understand what OP is saying, here is the summary: Viewing of pornographic material especially on the internet can lead to Low Self Esteem, Behavioural Changes, Change in S.e.xual Orientation just to mention a few and it was also comapared to taking harmful drugs in the article. EDIT: nairaland screens the word s-e-x-u-a-l? Surprising! |
Hello People! Been a passive observer of this thread for some months now and the comments have been a valuable source of information. Just dropping in to say I appreciate the efforts that some people are putting in here to guide some other people. Cheers! |
Hello folks, I'm new to Lagos and I have not noticed any parks for kids except in big shopping malls (Shoprite and the likes). I tried doing some search on the internet for such places and the results I saw were pretty old and I don't know if such facilities would still be in good shape. Such places include Funtopia, Funland Limited, Woodfields Farms and Parks, The Kidzone, Jahlobia etc. As I mentioned, most of the reviews are pretty old and I'm concerned if these places are still suitable for kids. Would be grateful if you can suggest and recommend fun parks or places for kids (ages 2 - 10) within Lagos because I promised to take them out to somewhere FUN this weekend. ![]() Thanks! |
Siga: ...UBC for where... Never lived anywhere but Tdot (Toronto)....WoW!!! Did you go to UofT? That's like the most expensive if i'm right and funding ain't that easy to get there cos of the competition. But anyway, enjoy the "tan" from the heat... ![]() ***still waiting to hear from Humanshado because he would be the first Nigerian that i know that is (or has) going (gone) to UBC. |
Siga: HEAT ALERT IN EFFECT ...DAMN...Been hot all weekend man...even now ...at a point it was 34c feels like 41c ....enough pools and cooling centres opened...Enjoy it while it lasts... ![]() Abeg shey you go UBC I have noticed you are one of the power users on this thread (just started going through the thread today) |
innocent chuks: @ cute shadeAnd you refer to yourself as innoncent. If i hear!!! ![]() |
Huzzie: TEAM WINTER (JANUARY2014)@Humanshado, abeg how you take enter UBC because that's my dream school?! I've always dreamed to work with Prof Lakshmanan of their Data Mining group. I have read so much about Vancouver and it's like its only my body that is here in Lagos and my mind is roaming the streets over there. I intend starting my masters January, 2015 because by then I would have had at least 2 years working experience in the industry. Please I have some questions like your CGPA (cos I want to know my chances. Finished with a 2"1 (3.65)) LOR's (was it industrial-based or academic-based), SOPs (wouldn't mind if I lay my hands on it) and if they accept TOEFL waivers. Other UBC alumni or present grad student's inputs are very much appreciated. |
FrancaNneka: Hey you above....i could catch a grenade for you.Franca, wouldn't have any cause to do that Because I would never put you in harms way I'm your knight in shining armor Always there behind you to watch your back(side) Also in front of you to clear the way But most importantly, always with you no matter what. |
toshmann: Making women happy is all that matters in a relationship.. . . . . . . . . .that is why men don't live longWhat a logic! Totally unbiased and convincing!! What a slowpoke!!! |
When I first saw the title I thought the author would apologise as regards Rape, Domestic Abuse, War Crimes against women and the likes. He lost me in the first paragraph when he started sounding like Taylor Swift. NONSENSE! ![]() |
Hey bro, I'm like in your shoes too but all I have to say is that map out a career path. What I mean is that what do you want to achieve with that masters? From what I've read, I think you believe that having a masters would give you an edge in the job market in Nigeria. <b>This is not totally true as there are lots of unemployed people with masters in Nigeria (even masters from UK universities)</b>. The major thing you need in the Nigerian job market is <b>skill</b> (because that helped me as you would see below) and of course a good first degree. I said I'm in your shoes because I'm also planning on going for my masters in 2014. I am a relatively fresh graduate and before I finished my B.sc, the company I did my IT with were calling me to resume even before doing my NYSC (I'm a Computer Scientist). I have worked for a year in the Tech Industry in Nigeria and I don't feel fulfilled despite the pay that's why I'm chasing my masters with and eye on Ph.d to enter the academia. I feel drawn to the classrooms and I intend being a research lecturer. The business part of the Industry and customer relationship just pisses me off. I'm not that old to give advice and obviously I don't have much experience, but please do Masters for the right reasons or else it would be a waste of time and money. Please my people, I have a question. <b>HOW HARD IS TOEFL</b> (Heck! Are HTML tags not supported on Nairaland?) |
25K is quite small for the CBN governor for a local trip. He's probably lying or i'm missing something in the report |
Afam4eva: That no one on the other side of the atlantic doesn't mean it's not great or doesn't mean others are better than it.I'm not disputing the fact that it is great (to the americans), it's just that the dude claimed it is the most viewed sporting event. |
