steady986: Don't sleep on Promise Amukamara. You could see that coach Otis trusted her to be the primary ball handler in the finals, even when Ezinne was on the court. She made some important 3s to settle the nerves too. I'd put her in there. Akhator is more a forward than a guard. Ibekwe would drop to the bench. The competition amongst the players would only be to our benefit. Imagine Amukamara starting a game, and in the 2nd quarter, coach Otis subs in Arike for her. That one na from frying pan to fire for the opposition |

somehow: It's high time ministries learn to generate IGI for themselves. HABA, so if the government doesn't release money, they can get sponsors, yet don't want government interference. This needs to stop. They should package the sport (All sports), none should be even 60% dependent on government. Completely agree |

A40: Unless Otedola, Dangote or any of these other mazajes step into the picture I don't see any private establishment pumping that amount into the female team alone.
With the number of girls we have playing in US colleges we should be top 3-5 in the World behind only US and maybe Australia. Even my WCW Liz Cambage I heard her dad is Nigerian You don't mean it? See better talent that would have helped Naija in the past! Anyway, I hope Felicia Aiyeotan of Virginia Tech won't turn down an invite to D'Tigress. She was born and lived in Nigeria till she was in her late teens. She stands at a massive 6"9". |

I’ve taken a look at the FIBA eligibility rules, and I discovered that Arike Ogunbowale could still play for Nigeria if she acquired a Nigerian passport before she turned 16! |

A40: Lmaoooo if you had a kid would you advice them to play for Nigeria? I see most of these guys as humanitarians because it's only football that provides some compensation for your services. I wouldn't advice Arike to come and play here, even in the WNBA most of those babes are underpaid talk less of Nigeria It all depends on whether the NBBF can secure a decent commercial sponsorship to the tune of $900,000/yr or more. If they can pull it off, and guarantee a bonus of, say, $400/day in camp allowance and $5,000 per game, the likes of Arike and other WNBA or college players could be tempted to play for Nigeria. Anyways, my dream D’Tigress starting five would be: Ezinne Kalu, Evelyn Akhator, Arike, Ibekwe, and Adaora Elonu. |

A40: So 2020 Olympics is sure.
Imagine if the Ogwumike sisters and Arike Ogunbowale could play for Nigeria. But our federation will not allow us be great. Smh Not yet. D’Tigress have to play in the African Olympic prequalifying tournament, holding between Nov 14-17. They are in group A alongside, Mozambique and Democratic Republic of Congo. Group B comprises Senegal, Mali, and Angola. The group winners and runners up advance to the semifinals. Then the semifinal winners will further advance to any of the four World Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (WOQTs). Each WOQT will consist of four teams, making a totanof 16 teams. The top 3 teams in each WOQT finally qualifies for the Olympics. So, D’Tigress are potentially 6 games away from a 2nd appearance at the Olympics. Yeah, I know it’s a tortuous qualifying process. Whoever designed this qualifying process isn’t a nice person. |

Danielnino00: Finally D'tigers have departed for China..
they will play Iran, Montenegro and Poland in an invitational tourney before the world cup It’s all down to the ingenuity of the NBBF president in sourcing a loan for the team. Hopefully, the Sports Commission will approve the release of funds by this week or next week. The whole situation has been embarrassing! After trying to convince the foreign-born players to play for the country, they then receive such bad treatment as their reward. The Nigerian authorities can do much better |

Julian Castro has qualified for the September ABC presidential debate! He scored 2% in the latest CNN poll, which was released today.
There are now 10 candidates who have qualified for the September 12 (and 13) debates, having met both the 130,000 donor threshold and the 2% polling threshold in four or more DNC-approved polls. |

steady986: Spot on. I believe the future of D'Tigress is looking good. We'll be the team to be for a very long time. The core of this team can stay together for a long time. Akhator is 24, Nyingifa is 27 or so, Ezinne is 27, Jasmine is 24, Promise is 26. The rest are 28 and above and have only 1 or 2 tournaments in them, thus the coach has to scout really hard. The good thing is Senegal have at least 8 of their players above 30. Our young team will be an asset for a long time. And it will only be strengthened with even younger players |
Sports › Re: Nigeria Basketball Thread! by PDPGuy(op): 8:21pm On Aug 19, 2019 |
steady986: By and large, the quality of the teams in the tournament was just horrible. Women's basketball in Africa still has a very long way to go. Bar Nigeria and Senegal, and Mali to a lesser extent, the rest were terrible. Basic things like holding strongly onto the ball was a problem. The ball readily slipped out of their grips when dribbling or catching a pass or rebounding. And shot selections were awful. Let's not even talk about the actual shot taking. Even open layups were readily missed. Still a long way to go. You spoke the truth! The most astonishing deficiency was the easy layups that were missed; even D'Tigress were guilty of that on some occasions. The other area of concern was the free-throw shooting. Most of the teams couldn't convert more than 40% of their throws. If Nigeria had, at least, a 50% conversion of their free-throws, they would have won the final by double digits! Definitely, like I said earlier, coach Otis has to scout for more WNBA and college players. Specifically, he and his coaching staff should scout for players who are very good two-point shooters from outside the paint. |

Barryseal: I'm actually talking about the last Afro basket in Tunisia where we came 2nd. Aminu wasn't part of the team. With him we could have retained the title.
Bottom line remains we are not doing well as a country. Look at the indoor gym they are playing this championship in Senegal, top class gym you have there. In Abidjan, they have anothee world class gym which hosted the Afro basket in 2015. All in West Africa.
Have you seen our national gym at the stadium in Surulere? Elementary schools in Texas have better gyms than that. This is supposed to be our best facility. She already plays for the US team
