Solumtoya: Remember, London is the financial capital of the world so it's not easy for people with certain expertise to find good jobs outside London I don’t agree with the BiB especially in these days of remote working where some folks are relocating to the Caribbeans and Spanish Islands etc to achieve a better work/life balance. I don’t even understand the fixation with London when you can get better value for your money elsewhere and also enjoy better quality of life at the same time. |

The best suya in my humble opinion is from Alhaji Suya. I’ve ordered from them severally and I can testify it’s top notch albeit expensive. @Koonbey you can order online. They ship the suya in cool boxes in refrigerated vans usually next day delivery or 2 days delivery for those of us in Scotland. The suya always arrives still frozen, you only have to defrost and microwave for 3 minutes for a sumptuous delight. |

KOVIC19COVID20: Thanks @Justwise. Maybe I didn’t put it well enough. I max out my £4,000 LISA using moneybox and govt has topped up my cool 1k for me on each occasion.
I want to use the sticks & shares as a second (but parallel) way to earn some extra dosh. I don’t mind if the margin is small, but I want to be buying sticks and shares worth £100 each week.
But I really do not know which ones to buy and which to avoid. What do you hope to achieve with your investment? Are you looking for current income via dividend payment or future income through capital appreciation? Whatever be the case, you need to study the shares you are interested in over a period of time. Although they say past performance is not a guarantee of future performance, studying past performance could give you a good indication of what might happen in the future. Alternatively rather than invest in individual shares, you could look to invest in an index tracker or managed funds. That way your risk will be diversified as you are investing in a portfolio of shares/bonds. I’m not sure DIY apps like FreeTrade are the best for novice traders. I haven’t used it though so can’t comment on its suitability. |

Also for the cabin luggage, apart from the usual small box of 8kg, can I also carry a laptop bag with some stuff on my back? What is it like here in Heathrow British Airways has a very generous hand luggage allowance of 23kg and not 8kg. Check the dimensions of your suitcase though, you can also take your laptop bag etc. https://www.britishairways.com/jba/ba/fi_FI/baggage/bagcabin.html |

To further buttress my point, in Canada as of today the average salary is $75k per annum which equates to 4K per month after taxes. The average 2021-2023 car costs approximately $800 per month coupled with insurance cost of $400 per month and fuelling costs of $300 per month. Before the twinkle of an eye, you are set back $1,500 per month because u want to drive a brand new car and show off to people that don’t care about what u drive.
This is all relative. I don’t believe getting a brand new car or phone or even credit card and mortgage should be the top priority of a new immigrant but circumstances differ and what works for one may not work for the other.
I have been here long enough to know that having a brand new car works better for me. My monthly rental is less than £250 (including free servicing for 3 years) and my car insurance (full comprehensive with protected NCD) is about £220 per annum so no the total cost of the car, insurance and deposit is not significant in the grand scheme of things for me. I would rather rest assured that my car is in excellent condition and ready to go when required than buy a second hand that would breakdown without warning and leave me stranded in the middle of no where.
To give you an idea, I once bought a 3 year old car in 2013 and the car served me for approximately 4 years before developing an irrepairable fault - spent over £3,000 trying to diagnose and repair the car before eventually trading it in as deposit for a brand new car. For starters, the garages charge between £45 and £80 per hour for labour, you will also have to contend with the run around from the mechanics as is typical of tradesmen in this country. So I don’t agree that a second hand car is always the most cost effective option.
At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong option. It all depends on our individual circumstances and past experiences. |

nineville: Firstly, check the terms and conditions of the accounts you can switch to, namely Santander Edge, 1I2I3, Everyday, Select, or Private Current Account:
https://www.santander.co.uk/assets/s3fs-public/AD_documents/h257208_p562799_coremc0933jan23h_lr.pdf
Thereafter, check the links for each of the Santander current accounts mentioned above and all have eligibility (how it works) criteria excerpted: ''You are over 18 and live in the UK permanently'' Thanks for taking the time to reference that. I’m sure new immigrants on here will find that useful. |

HollyMadison: Hi elders, hope we are all good..
1. Please can anyone share tips on inviting grandma for omugwo? due date is mid 2023 and we want to start processing visit visa now.
2. In applying for the visit visa, which case is stronger? a. Grandma coming for omugwo (visa application will be done by her daughter who’s on tier 2 dependent visa) Or b. Grandma coming for her brother in laws burial (visa application will be done by the her sister, the widow who’s a British citizen) .
Thank you 🙏🏽 I would use both in the letter - grandma is coming for omugwo and will also use the opportunity to spend some time with her sister who has recently lost her hubby. You will need to provide the usual supporting documents i.e banks statements, pay slips, death certificate of her brother in law, mortgage statement for your home, copies of your passport data page and visa/ British passport. If you are renting, rental agreement and letter from your landlord might be beneficial. What is grandma’s current status? Is she a pensioner? Are you funding the entire trip or is she supposed to contribute towards it? You will need to mention in the letter that you are funding the trip etc. I invited my mum for omugwo many moons ago and as far as I can recall, it was pretty much straightforward. I doubt the process would have changed that much. |

harddrive2012: Please I need help in getting a temporary Accomodation in Glasgow. The Airbnb I’ve been seeing are expensive. Also, how do I go about getting a 1 room for myself and partner that doesn’t share bathroom but rather with a private bathroom.
Can you advise me on transportation to book from London(Heathrow airport) to Glasgow. Arrival time is around 4:30pm. I saw British Airways for 9:00pm but they won’t allow me carry the full luggage(23kg*2) except for business class which is costly.
Thank you Most convenient option would be national express from terminal 2 but check their luggage allowance and also book a flexible ticket in case you are delayed. Don’t book from London Victoria unless you like stress. |

Viruses: According to whose standards is caring job a waste of one's time? Let's give care givers some dignity.
We seek different things in different jobs. Some seek peace of mind that comes with sponsorship knowing that one day the stress will be over and they'll move on, others have made up their mind to go for a second, third and so on masters or live illegally if they don't get sponsorship. Some have partners that will start masters which will in turn give them continued legal stay.
Different situations guide these decisions so care workers should not be crucified. Nothing stops anybody from changing job/career anytime they so desire. Nobody is disparaging care work, I’m just highlighting the possible outcome for that strategy. At the end of the day, there are no right or wrong approach. Each approach comes with inherent risks/drawbacks. People should follow whatever approach favours their circumstances and deal with any obstacle as they arise. |
