We are unnecessarily being profiled and it's all wrong, when I knew It was all a joke was when Student visa processing last year was delayed for more attention to be paid to the Ukrainian refugees as in those bringing money into the country were being held back for those bringing nothing, chai we don suffer
@Goke7 I usually agree with you on most subjects but this is a bit harsh! People that are escaping a war zone through no fault of theirs should not be prioritised? Haba!

On the issue of council tax, for those that have successfully switched from tier 4 to tier 2 visa, please remember to inform your local authority so they can issue a revised Council Tax bill. You might think they won’t know but trust me they are monitoring everything and will send you the revised bill in due course.

Same advice for those that initially benefited from the single person discount but whose partners and children have now joined them. You have a duty to inform the Council when there is a change in your circumstances. If you don’t inform them, they will soon find out and send you your arrears.

True bro. You get a refund if you challenge most councils.

I am afraid to say more before someone takes it to youtube and make a public debate of new immigrants not paying council tax.
The exemption you are alluding to only applies to Students and their dependants which is something that has been raised severally on this thread. I think the OP is on a work visa so won’t qualify for the exemption but thanks for pointing that out.

If you don't have an ILR and no recourse to public fund, you probably should not pay council tax. It's worth checking as many dont know this

Not really, council tax bands can be so random that sometimes you question how they arrived at it.

When I was living in a terrace house my house number is 9 and my council tax band was B while my neighbour in number 8 was on band A, the same house size. The excuse my landlady gave then was that my house is end-of-terrace.
End terraced houses are usually valued higher than mid terraced properties though because of the absence of neighbours on the other side and also larger gardens. This could be the reason for the higher council tax band.

Ok, use the link above from Zahra29 to check what your council tax should be. Different properties will have different tax bands. Generally speaking the bigger the property, the higher the council tax.

What is your council tax band and which local authority? You can check online to see what your tax should be.

Schooling, and Healthcare is free in London and every part of UK till Tertiary. People pay for private services in London and every part of the UK so don't bring that Middlesbrough argument o grin I know people who pay for private education in remote parts of Wales. Londoners do it because they can not because they have to.

As for Mortgage costs, houses appreciate more in London than Middlesbrough. I know folks who bought "expensive" properties worth about 450k some years back, now they are getting offers of almost £1m. So don't pity such Londoners, as long as they bought right, they will be fine, my dear.

Meanwhile, I need to visit this Middlesbrough
😂🤣😂 in the same way that you’ve argued that schooling is free but people choose to go private. The brits can also argue that immigrants should stay in their country 😜, you don’t need to come to the UK. You can very well stay in your country. Nobody forced us to come here to study. We chose to come here out of our own volition and if the government changes the goal post halfway through the match, then we should just chin up and move👍

This narrative that most Brits are uneducated and unskilled is not helpful or accurate. The vast majority of skilled and leadership positions are occupied by Brits. There might be a shortage in some industries like Engineering due to the historical relative unpopularity of STEM courses, but it is mainly the roles that are viewed as low skilled and/or low paid that Brits do not want to do.
Sorry to digress but this reminded me of the argument in Part 2 of this thread about cost of living in London and Middlesbrough where I pointed out the person will be better off in Middlesbrough by the time they factor in school fees, high mortgage costs etc @Solumtoya commented to say schooling was free in London. I decided not to continue that discussion because it wasn’t worth my time. More than 22% of London pupils attend fee paying secondary schools and an average of 25% across the entire country yet we constantly paint all British people as poor and uneducated on this thread.

It’s a case of damned if they do! Damned if they don’t!

There’s no way the government policies can favour everyone. Some minority group will always feel marginalised - this time around it’s the international students that feel victimised. Tomorrow it will be another section of the society. Rishi Sunak is on the telly right now justifying the decision. Is he right? Yes. Is it fair? No but it’s what it is.

Any government official that believes this should not be in a position of planning

I have not come across a Brit that would pay 15k, Visa + IHS fee and separate from family all cos of a masters degree. They'd consider it ridiculous. How then does the UK expect a low income Nigeria to churn out such cash to stuff their coffers?

Returning to contribute is one of the hypocritical statements branded around. They could stay back and contribute to the UK economy. For the Nigerian labour market, a UK masters is not worth any more that masters from elsewhere. Many times not worth the paper it was issued on.

Over 95% of folks coming for masters see it as a means to emigrate legally. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Just like with being part of the EU, the UK economy gains much more from international students than it gives.
That you haven’t come across one does not make it a fact! I know a British citizen that got a partial scholarship to study (first degree) in America. His family had to make a substantial contribution (more than that your £15k) towards his studies in the USA. Having now graduated since last year, he has been looking for a means to change his visa to work permit. Visa eventually ran out but due to being a BC, he was able to switch to an ESTA to prolong his stay in the USA temporarily. Bloke still hasn’t been able to get a sponsored job in the US. He’s now contemplating coming back home to get a job in Scotland or enrolling for a masters so he can continue to live the dream in America.

Apart from Canada and Australia. I doubt if there are any other countries that allow students a clear path to naturalization or bring their entire village as dependants. It’s their country and their rules and if we don’t like it, we can very well stay back in Nigeria. This attitude of entitlement is getting a bit old and silly now.

Let the sht hit the fan 🤷🏽‍♀️

. Was HSMP abused as well?
Yes it was back then between 2007 to 2009. There were a lot of underhand practices, people were using fictitious payslips and bank statements from Nigeria to meet the minimum financial requirement for the HSMP visa. Salaries from their UK jobs wasn’t sufficient for the requirement so, they would claim they were consulting in Naija and use forged payslips to meet up. It wasn’t just Nigerians that were involved though, Indians were equally as guilty.

I’m going to wade into this credit card debate. Without sounding like a broken record, folks should focus on running their accounts properly, paying bills on time, registering on the electoral roll and generally keeping everything above board in the first instance.
There is no need to rush into applying for a credit card in your first few months. You need to first understand how credit cards work, APRs etc.

People are just joining the bandwagon and applying for the American Express Avios Cards without checking if this is the right card for you. Just because you get avios points for travelling - this might not even be useful to some people. The APR’s on these Avios cards are usually higher than other cards in the market. Also when I had this American Express Avios card 10 years ago, only very few merchants would accept them, this may have changed now but I doubt it. I know everyone on here claim to pay back everything at the end of month but it takes a lot of discipline to achieve that. And also what happens if you fall upon hard times? Some people are just setting themselves up for colossal debt with this type of cards.

Before rushing to apply for a Credit Card, you should first ask yourself: what do you need this card for? Are you looking for rewards like Avios and cashback? Or are you looking for 0% interest on purchases for the foreseeable future? Or are you trying to build your credit score? Or do you need a balance transfer card? I will leave this link again here to check eligibility for pre approval before applying:

https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/eligibility/credit-cards/

Finally when I got my first credit card in this country, I was just a house wife and was not in active employment. I got a phone call from my bank asking me to come in for a review and they offered me a credit card at the review. At that time I had been their customer for over 4 years and had no default on my account. Since then I have acquired over 6 credit cards with very generous limits across all the cards and I get 0% interest on purchases and balance transfer offers on my cards every month. Sometimes I take up the offers, sometimes I just ignore them.

Moral of the story, slow and steady wins the race. Do things right and every other thing will fall into place eventually.

Hi good people, please what is best and cheapest means of transportation from Glasgow to London. I would be traveling to London to renew my passport in July .
I would appreciate any useful information regarding everything I need to know about renewal of my passport before leaving Glasgow. I intend to return same day if possible.
Hi megabus would probably be the cheapest but not necessarily the best. You can get the overnight bus so you are arriving in London around 8am and going straight to Nigerian House. You will also be able to get the overnight bus from London back to Glasgow the same day so no need for hotel. However as this very long journey and I wouldn’t recommend this unless you are really strapped for cash.

The other two options would mostly likely require an overnight stay in London. You could use the train, tickets go for about £25 one way if booked in advance. As your appointment is in July, you will be able to snag a cheap ticket. You could also use one of the budget airlines eg EasyJet, even British Airways has reasonable flight only deals to London.

Whatever you do, ensure you get to Nigerian House as early as possible. Ignore the appointment time and arrive in plenty of time. Hopefully you will not encounter any issues and should be done latest by 1pm.

Hi guys - I'm travelling to Canada (from the UK) for a couple of weeks, please what's the best card/bank to use while abroad. Will appreciate any input.
Either Starling or Chase bank card is fine. No additional fees and you get the Mastercard rate prevalent at time of transaction.

When withdrawing money or paying for transactions abroad always choose to pay in the local currency. The ATMs and cashiers will give you the option to pay in GBP, ignore this and choose to pay in local currency’. This way your card provider will do the conversion using the Mastercard day rate available at time of transaction. However, if you choose to pay in GBP, the atms and merchants would use their own exchange rate which is usually a big rip off.

There's nothing you people cannot justify.

She took a side job that would require her to be regularly at another place for a full day meaning that the place where she works (and her colleagues and possibly patients that depend on her services) would lose a full day of the assistance she could have provided.

Cost of living crisis - is she the only one in the crisis? As a pharmacist she's paid significantly above the average in the UK. So if everyone in her workplace starts disappearing for full days at will, how will her workplace function?

This sort of sob-story mentality that you people use to justify misbehaviour, again, is how many of our institutions have been reduced to rubbish.
Thanks Bros.

Madam,

Only if you know how grossly underpaid core professionals are In the uk, you wouldn’t be saying this. A pharmacist with 2 kids who took a side gig for 3 months probably to cushion the effect of the cost of living crisis, if she was paid well enough, she might not have considered it in the first place. She was already suspended , why fire her after suspension and the whole issue seems overflogged.
The side gig is not the problem. It’s the hours conflicting with her full time job and the fact that she did not disclose it to her employer especially if there’s a contractual provision requiring her to disclose such. Let’s not gloss over the issue….what she did was wrong.

I would say it’s greed that has landed her in this position. I’m sorry I have no empathy for this person. Also speaking about cost of living crisis, she is a pharmacist for crying out loud and not a supermarket colleague on minimum wage.

Provisional license is usually valid for 10 years and within that period you are required to pass your practical test within 2years of passing the theory test.

I think your colleague was either driving with an international drivers license or Nigerian license which is only valid for one year from the date of arrival. If they were driving on a provisional license but without a qualified driver beside them, then it’s also a contravention of the law.

London, like New York or Lagos, is expensive and we would mostly wanna stay away from it.

But it is also filled with opportunities that keep many of us thriving.

I know one Nigerian guy that got a Tech role paying like £70k in London. He was at it for less than a year before switching to one of the big banks on a close to 6-digit offer. And there are so many of such roles asking to employ and sponsor him in London. Telling him to move to Middlesbrough would be a joke.
Is this your guy married by any chance and does he have kids? By the time you factor in higher rate tax, mortgage costs, school fees for the kids in London, commuting costs, etc, he will be better off on a £50k salary in Middlesbrough.
