Only private school is a choice.
University education is a choice. You don’t need to be a university graduate to be successful in life, there are other routes like apprenticeship or learning a trade.

Private healthcare is a choice, you can use NHS like Keir and wait forever for your appointment and procedure.

Private nursery school is also a choice. Most people keep their kids at home until they reach school age.

None of these private services are any different from private school education but Labour has chosen to discriminate against one group of people to match their left wing ideology.

Goodenoch:
But it is a discount. We buy cars and houses and whatever else from already taxed income. That argument doesn't mean anything and doesn't show why private education should be VAT exempt.

The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of parents cannot send their children to private schools. If you can, you're 'well to do' far above the average whether you consider yourself wealthy or not or whether you're making sacrifices to do it or not. Same as parents sending their children to Covenant University are almost universally going to be doing much better than the average parent of kids at UNILAG.

In principle, there's zero reason why the government and general public should be subsidising what is essentially a luxury (because your not paying VAT costs the entire country in additional funds that need to be raised to function).

Now, one valid point you've made is about how kids leaving private schools could lead to lots of pressure on public schools but the counter argument will be that funds raised from VAT on private school fees will pay for expanding capacity in state schools. It's not even clear that so many people will leave private schools. There has been conflicting data on that from what I've been reading, e.g. https://taxpolicy.org.uk/2024/06/02/independent_schools_misleading_vat/
Going by your argument, university education should also be taxed as well as private healthcare. Universities also operate as charities with business tax relief. University education is a luxury and not a necessity. Nurseries should also be taxed as these are also luxuries and not a necessity. Parents can stay at home and look after their children until they are old enough to attend pre-school. You can’t tax one form of private education and leave the other. Maybe state secondary and primary school places should be means tested just like University bursaries, that way it will be more equitable.

Second bolded - I belong to a few Facebook groups of parents in private schools and majority of them have categorically stated they won’t be able to afford 20% fee increase especially those of them with more than 1 child. Some of them living in England have even gone to the extent of contacting their LAs and MPS requesting information on available school places in their catchment schools. Majority of the schools are oversubscribed and councils are offering schools which are more than 5 miles away which would also mean additional transportation expense for the LA (read Taxi to and fro school).

Perhaps you should be asking Labour how they intend to staff the schools. I see many adverts for primary and secondary school teachers on my local authority’s website but there are no takers. You would argue that they would probably pinch the teachers from private schools that have gone bust but those teachers left the state sector for a reason and I highly doubt they will be willing to go back.

And you will have it.your daughter deserves the absolute best. However, if going to private school, there won't be a discount. Its unfair to discount 7% at the expense of 93%.
If you can afford to do something that only 7% can do, you are not just "normal" people. You are doing very well.
93% of parents cannot do this even if they starve themselves and cut every other expenses.
Which discount are private school parents receiving? They are paying tuition fees from already taxed income. I have demonstrated to you that they are actually saving the government money by giving up their state school places. If you have a counter argument to that, please present your case with facts rather than making a blanket statement like 7% are wealthy because in reality these people are just normal everyday folk who have different priorities and shouldn’t be penalised for their aspirations.

I share your sentiments about the vat on private schools. Not only the rich send their children to private school like you mentioned. Madam and I calculated how much it is to send a child to private school and that is about how much we pay for childcare in a year full time for nursery without tax free childcare or the free govt hours. We could send a child to private school, it won't affect our current lifestyle. Are we rich, I won't say we are; options for childcare are limited. If we valued private education, we could continue on this path but if it becomes more expensive as a result of this vat, we pull out and go public like you mentioned.

It's always easy to tax the 'rich' pay their fair share etc but there are disadvantages. Answers are not always black or white, a workable balance is always best. They are taxing energy companies on their profits, these companies are majorly investing outside the UK these days where all these excessive taxes and 'wokism' don't apply. In the longer term the UK loses.
This is exactly the same calculation we did and the reason why we agreed to send our daughter. 11 years ago when my daughter was in nursery I was paying circa £1,000 per month. Over a year that’s about £12,000 - private schools fees are within that range. We are by no means rich, just normal folk who want the best for their daughter in an environment where she can thrive and be the best she can.

Private schools like Winchester college and all the rest of them are businesses which turn a profit. They should pay VAT like the rest of us. That tax will be used to equip schools for the 93% of children in state schools. What's wrong in that? The country ll enjoy the extra 1 billion in taxes

I am very averse to subsidising the wealthy(if you can afford to send your child to a private school, then you are wealthy) .Let everybody pay their taxes, mbok.

I ,an adult cis woman, have never suffered any effect ,bad or good, from the existence of Trans women. Why are you looking at people in the restroom? . I literally don't care. How have they affected your life personally? Not hearsay o, personally from encountering one
The trouble with the bolded is that only 1% of private schools fall in the category of Winchester and Eton college. Those type of schools will easily absorb any VAT charge as their clientele are mostly rich kids from abroad and wealthy locals. It’s the smaller independent schools that provide support for SEND kids and provide bursaries and scholarships to thousands of gifted kids from poorer background that would bear the brunt of this policy. This is what Labour fails to understand.

According to you and Labour, anyone that sends their kids to private schools is wealthy. You fail to realise that a lot of parents make huge sacrifices to put their kids through private school by choice. Some people forego holidays, drive old jalopy cars and live in smaller houses just to be able to afford tuition fees whereas some state school parents are driving top of the range cars, live in fancy houses in the best catchment area for grammar schools and are able to holiday in various exotic destinations but according to Labour, these people are not wealthy….it’s the private school parents that are wealthy. Real politics of envy! It costs the Council about £8,000 to educate a child in secondary school. Private school parents are actually saving the government a lot of money by not taking up state school places. Instead they should be given a tax rebate as done in other European countries for saving the government money. What will now become of this your £1billion additional funding if 50% of the pupils in smaller private schools decide to withdraw their kids due to unaffordability, will Labour find spaces for them in oversubscribed states schools and how will the government fund it?

I couldn’t help but laugh at the second bolded. You are speaking from a place of ignorance if you think it’s perfectly ok for a transgender person to share public spaces with women and girls. Google Isla Bryson and see what happened when they were sent to a female prison. All hell broke loose - this is one of the main reasons why Nicola had to quit as SNP leader.

Like I said, each to their own but I will not vote Labour not whilst they are pursuing these policies.

Anyone travelling for Euros or Olympics this summer? Just got my Schengen visa and trying to make travel arrangements via Eurostar (tired of flying). Any tips for a young couple would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
You’ve kinda left it a bit late to book Eurostar tickets for summer especially with the Olympics coming up shortly. Tickets are still available but you will find that they are over £200 for a return journey whereas if you booked well in advance it’s usually priced at £39 for one way, I hate being ripped off so I always get my tickets 5 to 6 months in advance or as soon as they are released.

It’s an enjoyable experience not having to faff around with liquids and luggage restrictions and the train also takes you straight into the city. You will be able to get train tickets for your onward journey from the Gare Du Nord. Get the RATP app on your phone, they have something similar to a visitor Oyster card which you can load tickets into and use to navigate the public transportation system. Always remember to validate your tickets before getting on the train, the French police don’t suffer fools gladly and can fine you on the spot. Ticket info can be found here:

So are you saying migrants should vote a party known for anti-immigrant policies? Abeg how will they benefit from the so called favourable policies after they've been sent home?
Perhaps anti immigration is the wrong choice of words, I should have maybe said strict immigration policies. In any case I have had a look at their immigration policy and as far as I can see their proposed solutions are very similar to what the other political parties are proffering. See below:

https://www.reformparty.uk/immigration

You need to also remember that we are all different and are at different stages of our life journey. What might appear important to you might rank low in my list of priorities. I will very gladly vote Labour but I’m strongly against their proposed VAT on independent school tuition fees, Education is not taxed anywhere in Europe but due to Brexit, labour is now stealthy trying to impose tax on education. I will rather spoil my ballot paper than vote for that policy, I also have a young female child and I cannot vote a party that refuses to pledge to protect safe spaces for women and girls.

I have not made up my mind on which party to vote but Labour is definitely out of the question for me, based on the issues I have highlighted. I know Starmer will be our next PM with or without my vote, however I’m not prepared to aid that process. I’m also in Scotland and have the additional dilemma of SNP but those ones have completely lost their sense of direction and it’s now a case of the blind leading the blind.

Why was this the wrong thing to say? I only know of 1 private ITU in London. If you are critically ill, you want to be in an NHS hospital. Critical care is unmatched in the NHS.
He knows this, his wife is a doctor,i believe.
I want a PM who uses the NHS , he will fight to fund the NHS properly.

Do you know the reform UK plan for immigration? It's not a coincidence that all the skinheads are in that party. Do not vote for Christmas if you are a broiler chicken.
As an avid Labour supporter, can you honestly say that you were impressed by his performance on Tuesday night’s debate? I’m sure that debate did more damage than good for Labour.

His response to the NHS question was based on political ideology rather than commons sense. He will not use private healthcare to help a dying loved one, he would continue to wait on NHS waiting list. That to me is either foolishness or plain white lie but each to their own. Same reason he finds it difficult to define a woman.

I can vote whoever I want to vote for or even spoil my ballot paper. Labour does not deserve my vote because I don’t know what they stand for. They have refused to provide clarification on a whole lot of issues which I’m interested in. At least with the Tory’s and Reform UK, what you see is what you get!

I think people need to stop conflating UK and Nigerian politics/ politicians. For starters there are checks and balances here and accountability to the electorate, and if Labour were to come in and be absolutely abysmal and not keep to a single of their manifesto pledges, they would be punished at the polls come the next election, so it's in their own interest to perform well after so many years in the political wilderness.

I've experienced Blair's Labour ,when I was old enough to start paying a bit of attention to politics ,circa 1999, and then obviously the last 14 years of the Tories. It's definitely time for a change of government. Same thing happened towards the end of Thatcher's reign, people grew disillusioned and needed the hope of something better.

The Tories, as they are now ,have lost direction and identity. They are largely self-serving and have become complacent, dictatorial and accustomed to power. David Cameron's government was better, which is saying something. They need a stint in their own political wilderness in order to regroup and find themselves and what they stand for and then maybe they can come back into power in 5, likely 10 years.
I agree with you Zahra but Keir is not the man for the job, he lacks charisma and is very evasive. He couldn’t even answer any of the questions thrown at him. I wish Labour had another frontman or person(since they can’t define a woman). I knew we were fighting a lost battle when he said he won’t pay for private healthcare for his dying relative. At this rate I will be voting Reform UK.

As I earlier said, my below points are peculiar to us. It will be different for another family, say a doctor or nurse, for example.

For both,
1. it will take time for me to achieve the same earning power. In fact, getting a job in my field might take time as well. Therefore, our household income will be smaller. Bear it in mind that tax are not different from the UK. I spoke to reasonable amount of people in Australia to reach this conclusion. I already know much about Canada.
2. We can't buy a house immediately, so we will need to rent. Renting is expensive and difficult to get.
3. Things are mostly more expensive.
4. We are both working from home in the UK but my spouse would have to be going to the office. It might mean the same for me too when I eventually get a job. So, it will mean childcare cost, transportation cost etc.
5. They are only willing to sponsor work permit not PR. We don't want to be tied to an employer after what we went through on Tier 2 visa here in the UK.
6. I looked at school for kids and realised education is not necessarily better. We might want to bring the kids back to the UK for Uni, so what's the point?
7. Moving to a new country is hardwork. Kids will miss their friends and might take time for them to adjust.
8. Not keen on the extreme cold weather in Canada and extreme hot weather in Australia. Except for rain, I prefer UK weather.

So, what are we going to gain?
1. 3rd citizenship, maybe. Not sure, if it is worth the stress.
2. Bigger house? Maybe. That's the main motivation but we just got a bigger house here, so not keen anymore.
3. Better healthcare? Maybe in Australia but not in Canada. Waiting time in Canada is similar to the UK. I have 3 siblings in Canada. In fact, most of my extended family live there, so I know a lot about Canada already.
4. Cheaper energy bill and fuel. Yes, this is where Canada beats UK. Other things are mostly more expensive.
5. My spouse will earn more in Australia but if he goes contracting in the UK, he can earn similar amount.

So, what do you think, Is it worth moving?
You forgot to add annual leave and holiday entitlement . You would probably go from circa 6 weeks entitlement to maybe 2 weeks in Canada. I also don’t think Canada’s maternity leave is as liberal as UKs.

Is it to increase the monthly DD or login to your account and make one off payments?
Be careful with overpayment especially if your mortgage is on a fixed term. Some lenders have clauses preventing overpayment of more than 10% of the mortgage value. There will likely be a penalty if you exceed this threshold. Best to check with your lender before overpaying.

If you have the £4k available to put in a LISA, best to put it at the start of the tax year so it will accrue interest for the whole tax year rather than drip feeding the LISA.

Pls suggest banks that will give a loan of £3000 or more. My credit score is still low and my bank (HSBC) said I'm not qualify for their loan. I want to use the loan for IHS payment. I have read through the thread and I saw some pages on 0% interest loans that can be use to pay when apply for ILR but truth is I don't understand it. Kindly help. Thanks. sad
A loan will charge interest albeit at a low rate depending on your personal circumstances. What you require is a 0% purchase credit card over a longish period. That way you can pay your IHS and have ample time to pay off the credit card without accruing any interest.

England can make tuition free just like Scotland.
SNP’s Free tuition in Scotland is not all that’s cracked up to be. Places are very limited for Scottish students in highly sought after Universities and courses. The Universities would rather offer places to fee paying ROUK students and international students.

Best thing is to scrap the free tuition fees so everyone can be on a level playing field.

I’m happy Rishi is trying to get those on benefits back to work. They have become very lazy and over relying on this benefits and I think it’s unfair to migrants who pay taxes/ IHS with no recourse to public funds.
Just say it’s unfair period. British people also pay taxes and some of them are not eligible for benefits due to earning high wages. They also have private health insurance so never use the NHS but they’ve been paying national insurance contribution for donkey years.

The system is unfair to the working population irrespective of whether they are British or immigrant.

Some of the cards offer 0% interest on purchases for up to 26 months but the purchases must be completed within the first 3 months of card ownership. So if your visa payment is say in month 4, you will not be covered by the 0% offer.
