What is the possibility of one getting a Visa approval if his sponsor is based in US?
I am in that shoe right now, got a partial scholarship for MSc in Engineering Data Science at the University Of Houston and my uncle who will be funding the deficit lives and works in the states.
UH is a nice school. Do you share same surname with your uncle? And is your uncle staying in Houston too?

Please those who have had interview, is it true that i20 should not be printed with A4 paper?
The Nigerian standard paper is A4 and the US standard is letter which is the dimensions given. You can print on either. However, should you want to print on letter you should enter a book shop to get a letter paper you can then go to business centres to print on it.

I have been with them for four years now. So without my employer's bank statement, I don't stand a chance of getting approval?
4 years is nice! Yes, the VO will need an evidence that your employer is sponsoring you. Since, you are working for the company you should also know the company well. Tough VO may ask questions about C of O of the company and other difficult Questions that I don't see recently because this has been a period of funding. Interviews now are soft so it may not get to that extent.

I mean in addition to paying sevis, app, visa, standardized test fee, Transcripsts fee one can also help appear for visa interview and pay flight tickets. It is all paying forward.

Hello Nairalanders,

I currently hold an offer from a top US school with partial funding from my department. I have spoken with my employer and they have agreed to fund the rest of the fee. The school said I can just provide the letter from my employer to them to secure my I-20 without providing a bank statement. I would like to know if that same letter suffices for the Visa interview here in Nigeria alongside the partial scholarship letter from my department.
You will need your employer to provide a letter of support from their Bank and a Bank Statement for you. You will need both in your interview. How long have you been working with your employer?

I understand but mock interviews are not part of the 'home work'

The least we should be able to do for someone else on this thread is free Mock interviews. Some individuals even go farther by helping to pay sevis fees, exams and application fees for others.

It's called 'Paying it Forward'.
And some others even help them to do Interviews by paying forward.

Hi Lovelies. Good to be back here. It always give me joy when I go through the post here and see how determined we are to succeed. This forum was my only social media around 2017, 2018. Others were busy on Facebook, I was busy on this thread gathering knowledge and sharing experiences. I can't thank the moderators enough. They were instrumental to my success story today. I completed my Master's program and currently working as a Network Security Engineer. I just want to encourage you all to keep the faith alive. Good morning Nairalanders,
Please I’m asking for my cousin that had his F1 visa denied in Abuja based on home ties issue and he’s planning on reapplying to Lagos because his school starts by August, can he reapply without any changes on his Ds160 and does he have a chance of getting approved this time and what other way can he convince the VO that he’s going for actual study or is there a document he needs to get this.
Thank you.
No one can help except you post the denial Transcripsts here and you share the previous DS-160 with someone you trust and is experienced on F1 VISA. Infact, it is better for your cousin to post the Transcripsts here so that when Questions are asked he/she can learn and provide response. There are some questions you will be asked and you cant answer except your cousin. Good-luck!

No one should be paying for a mock interview... you have enough info on these threads if you are willing to invest the time.
Sure. 'If you are willing to invest the time' and time is also money. There is a prize for every prize. Unfortunately,we always want to seek the short cuts. You get the best VISA Transcripsts from years back( 2013/2014/2015/2017/2018). They can start reading the threads from those years and I am sure it will be very helpful because that's when the embassy was really hot the days of checking the SOA and putting guys on AP. If you dnt want to invest the time you also pay the price.

Thank you all for sharing your interview experience on this platform. I have been following the thread since April.

Had my interview on Thursday, 20th of May, 9:30am
Status: Approved!

I was interviewed by a Black American Lady.

V:O- Good morning, please may I have your documents?

Me: Morning, sure! (Passed my I-20, Passport, SEVIS Fee Receipt )

V.O : What are you going to the US for?
Me: Masters degree at the *XYZ University .

V.O : Did you apply for Visa in Canada,
Me: Yes, I did in 2015

V.O : Tell me about your Bachelor's Degree
Me: I did as she asked

V:O I see you are a Lawyer
Me: Smiles, that's correct

V:O : One minute please, she stood up, shut the little opening , and Walked away.
Me: Adjusted my Jacket & said, Father Lord, Let your will be done!

She returned, while standing. She asked who is paying for your trip?

Me: I have a Merit Aid Scholarship from the University and my parents will pay for my trip.

V.O : detaches my other passports, I will be approving your visa and would like to feature you on our social media platforms.

Me: Thank you very sincerely.

V:O Slips the White paper, and returns my I-20. Watch out for an email from the embassy. Congratulations

Me: Cheers!
If you dnt mind. Feel free to share the university name in my DM if you are not comfortable sharing it here. I am also interested in your profile cos the VO talked about featuring you on social platforms. I will be happy if you can share the university name and the profile here though so that everyone can benefit. To be clear I am not an MBA person I just want to learn more from your transcripts. Thank you.

For those of you posting mock transcripts, I'll advice you either join groups where you have someone act like a VO and interview you or you have a friend scrutinize for you or better still post the challenging questions to which you haven't found an ideal answer. But posting your entire "to-be" transcript here won't do much good and it's misleading too.

Why I'm saying this, Most people juxtapose mock transcripts for actual transcripts. It's confusing.

You don't have to post the entire transcript. Just post the question (s) that is/are challenging to you and your overhead response. Instead of the entirety of transcript. And then people can look into and provide their feedback for you to modify.
I think it is better if full or part transcripsts is posted here for review. Part Transcripsts in terms of where you have a challenge & full if you want to know what areas needs corrections. Transcripts corrections is good but Transcripsts delivery is more significant. How you deliver your Transcripsts is more important. Audio mock interviews is nice but video mock interviews is better. I suggest for those doing mock interviews it is better to have it with those who have had rejects( like 3 or more rejects at the US embassy) cos they have more experience in those areas or those who have conducted several mock interviews with F1 students. I actually do mock interviews but it is not free because it is my time. I have to monetize the time because I could have used it for other productive business. I don't charge before but when I noticed guys where giving my information to agents who are making loads of money from it I started charging.

Thanks for the response. I have submitted and booked an appointment, to update the new DS160 means I’ll have to cancel and reschedule. Thanks I was hoping I wouldn’t have to cancel
You can fill a new DS-160 but with a new confirmation number. Go back to your appointment portal and click on updates profile. Go to DS-160 confirmation number and change it to the new number. Then click on reprint/ send to email. The new DS-160 confirmation number will appear on the visa appointment letter sent to your email.

- admission fee - 80k
- my admission charge - 40k
- i-20 - 150usd
- sevis - 350usd
- documentation 100k

kindly help!!!
Though the agent didn't really charge you much If you are to do it yourself you can spend more or a bit less. I advice you do it yourself but rest assured that admission fees are not fixed. Also,i-20 shipping cost is not fixed however some schools ship it for free. You should get all the information you need here. All the best!

tonero4urch:
Hello people, could you guys help with looking at this mock interview questions & answers and evaluate by constructive criticism etc.. Here it goes ;

Why are you going to the US?
A: I’m going to the US for my masters in Statistics ( Biostatistics concentration) in the department of Mathematics and Statistics at Georgia State University in Downtown Atlanta Georgia - USA.

Q: How Many Schools did you apply to?
A: 13 schools in the USA, 2 in Canada and 1 in Singapore

Q: How many of them offered you admission?
A: 6 of them offered me admission while others are still pending.

Q: Why Georgia State University ?
A: Apart from the fact that they offered me full tuition waiver, an employment and a monthly stipend, Georgia State University stands out for me because they match my objectives, training opportunities and field research . These are in line with my goal of being a lecturer after my Masters and PhD Programs. Also, apart from the fact that he has been helpful to me through out the admission process, I am particularly fascinated by the research work of Professor Gengsheng Qin. He researches on "statistical methods in diagnostic medicine and biological research" ; " survival analysis" etc which will be very effective in my quest to being a biostatistic lecturer of note after my PhD studies. I also chose this school because of its rich culture of faculty and student diversity.

Q: Where is Georgia state university located?
A: It is located in Downtown Atlanta Georgia USA.

Q: Why do you want to have this degree?
A: My dream is to impart knowledge to the younger generations and in order to do that having a masters and PhD degree will increase my market value when i return to my al mata (Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka) in Nigeria

Q: Who is your sponsor?
A: My school( Georgia State University) is sponsoring me. They offered me a tuition waiver with an employent as a graduate lab assistant and a monthly stipend. The deficit will be covered by my first cousin Mr Michael Uhuegbu.

Q: What does he do?
A: He is studying for his PhD in Vanderbilt University right now.

Q: Are you married?
A: Yes i am

Q: Do you have a relative in America?
A: I don't have a immediate relative but i have a first cousin by name Mr Michael Uhuegbu

Q: Why is he sponsoring?
A: He has been so passionate about my career and I told him about my ambitions. After i got my admission and he saw the funding deficit he immediately said he would cover it.

Q: Why do you want to study in the US?
A: Apart from the part that the US is known to have one of the best education system in the world having my education in the US will expose me to the advance practical and theoretical aspects of statistics. Also like I said having a master and PhD degree from an america university will do my credentials a whole lot of good on returning to my al mata Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka.

Q: How did you get to know this school?
A: After outlining my aims and objectives I decided to do a comprehensive search to find and filter schools in line with my goals. I did this by using google and other academic websites like USNEWS.com etc

Q: What is your study plan/What are the courses you’ll be taking?
A: It would take me about 28 months to complete the total of 30 credit hours ( comprising of 24 hours coursework and 6 hours thesis research). My courses include but not limited to Survival analysis, Advance methodologies in Biostatistics, Linear Statistical Analysis etc

Q: What’s your plan after graduation?
A: With my updated knowledge of the various aspects of Statistics and its application, I’ll be coming back home to the role of a lecturer in my al mata Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka.

Q: If I give you this visa, what will you do?
A: That means I have 28 months to equip myself with the theoretical and practical skills needed to be a lecturer and then I will head back to my al mata Nnamdi Azikiwe University Nigeria to take up a lecturer role and impact knowledge. My al Mata have since been experiencing dearth of statistics lecturers and i I would like to fill this void.

Thanks!
Looks like you are doing Masters & PhD at same time. Weird!

Thanks for your response. I get you

But at the end of the day, it still depends on your VO’s mentality.

There was a guy who answered all his questions just like you have outlined or even better and still got a denial.

Everyone in the queue was shocked!

Things dey happen true true
That happens. I have also seen someone who told me he didn't say anything reasonable and that it was the VO that forced him to talk. He is someone I know well. The VO was like please,go ahead, say something!

Visa denied in Lagos
May 4, 2021

First time, First denial
COA: $60k
No funding at all
University: Stevens Institute of Technology, NJ

NB: My best friend is saying I shouldn’t post my transcript on NL, but I’m posting it, so maybe someone will learn a thing or two.

Background: The queue was very long, over 300 people or more got interviewed today. Our biometrics were taken by 2 white guys. One middle aged and one young guy. I didn’t even know they were VO’s too. I thought they were just ordinary embassy staffs. I guess they were taking the biometrics to reduce the queue. Then as soon as there was no one else for biometrics. They resumed their VO duties.

There was an elderly VO, I was hoping he would interview me, he was not denying based on sentiments. He would analyze your case well and let you defend yourself and speak. He approved people that were able to speak well and defend themselves and denied those that were beating around the bush.

He had just finished interviewing someone, and it was my time to be interviewed, his window was vacant, but Unfortunately, as I approached, he left his desk, he was going for a short recess I think.

I was ushered to a young VO. One of those who were taking biometrics earlier.

VO: Pass your passport and I-20

Me: passed it

VO: What is taking you to the United States ?

Me: *talking boldly and with a loud voice* ...I am going to Stevens Institute of Technology, the third most prestigious University in the state of New Jersey for my Masters in CyberSecurity.

VO cuts in and says: I don’t need to know that information.

*insinuating that I shouldn’t have told him my school is the third most prestigious institution in NJ

*My heart started beating fast and I became nervous, that I have messed up.

VO: What would this degree do for you?

Me: This course of study has concentrations in Network security and data Protection and it pertains to what I currently need in my workplace for career growth. I work in an IT company.

*due to the fact that I was already nervous. I blurted the above out so fast.

VO tells me. Hold up. Take a deep breath. Now continue.

I continued...the course would also assist me to get the much needed promotion I have been working so hard for in my company.

VO: How many schools did you apply to?

Me: I also applied to Bowling Green State University, Bowie University Maryland and Kennesaw State University.

VO: How many admitted you?

Me: Stevens, BGSU and KSU admitted me, while I’m waiting a response from Bowie.

VO: Who’s paying for this?

Me: My mother ...then I added, I have her account statement here.

VO: What does she do?

Me: She is a real estate developer, the acquires hectares of land and develops it into estates. She also builds houses and sells. And develops for people too.

VO: How many staffs does she have ?

Me: About 15-20

VO: What is her monthly income

Me: 3.6 million.

*Now this was where I messed up. My mom does not have a fixed monthly income. She is a businesswoman and her money comes in steadily. I don’t know what made me say 3.6 million. I was already nervous and feeling dizzy. I’m sure my mother earns more than that monthly.

VO: Who does she live with ?

Me: She lives with my younger sister

*Honestly I don’t understand why he asked me this question

VO: Who do you live with ?

Me: I live alone, then I added with my fiancée

*I actually live with my fiancée, I don’t know why I said I live alone in the first place. Maybe because my fiancée is not currently around and I have been alone for 2 months.

VO: You live alone, with your fiancée. Okay

He types on his system for about a minute.

*I feel they type in the questions they ask us and our responses for record purposes.

VO reaches to the stack of letters, picks out a denial letter and hands to me. Then says “you don’t have the funding requirement for this program”

He didn’t even bother checking my moms account statement. It had a very good balance
Every question that a VO ask has a meaning:

What is taking you to the US. You spoke too much. Who doesn't know that SIT is prestigious in NJ? Infact, that point is generic. Is like you are going to Carnegie Mellon University and you are still telling the VO it is prestigious.
For guys that doesn't have funding there are three questions that you should talk a lot,why this school, why this course & what does your sponsor do( you should praise your sponsor well here except your sponsor is a rich public figure so you dnt need to talk too much). You should be able to defend all what you say.

What this degree do for you: Your response are generic. Why are you interested in Network protection & data security? How will these courses help your career? What promotion are you seeking? To IT Manager? You should back your points with examples.

Who is Paying: My mother is okay. *I have the account statement here* shows desperation and you shouldn't do that. Only when the VO ask for any evidence to support your mums sponsor is when you ask: Do you mean like a Bank Statement? Then you can bring it out. Unless VO ask for a document dnt push for it.

What does she do: You played it low! My mum is a respected real estate developer in Oyo State. She has acquired land worth over N300m & has several developed lands worth more than N100m.My mum has also patnered with the Oyo State Government to provide lands to Civil Servants & to several big wigs in the entertainment industry...... you should praise your sponsor.

How many staffs does she have: The VO wants to know how many people your mum is feeding that's why there's a follow-up question of how much does she earns annually & you answered that with nervousness. So, get the logic! Next time check your SOA well to know the net cash flows per month and get a rough estimate for a year by multiply by 12. There are a lot of questions on SOA that I can't talk about here that the VO can ask.

Who does she live with? She wants to know whether some guys at home also depend on your mum or how close you are with your mum.

Who do you stay with: whether alone or your fiancee is wrong. It doesn't make sense to be married and staying with your fiancee and your mum is sponsoring your Education. It will make more sense if you and your fiancee are sponsoring it ,your fiancee is sponsoring or you are sponsoring.

Normally, an ideal DS-160 should look like this. You are single, you are staying with your mum and your mum is sponsoring your Education.

When is your interview
But how does the person change the SEVIS ID on the us booking portal. The SEVIS ID should be that of the new school.

I heard about Kennesaw state university from Brown2green. May God bless him.

I'm grateful to God Almighty that made today possible. Everything started in 2019.
I wrote GRE and applied to schools but they all rejected me then I ran to Nairaland to tender my case.

One angel saw my case on Nairaland and sent a mail to me. We call him Pepe . I thank God for using Pepe for me. He told me to go and do WES so that I can get admission and funding. I told him it wasn't possible becos I didn't have that kind of money. He pressed on me until I did WES, then my story changed.

I am so happy right now. Only God could have done this.

I planned to have my interview at a later date but I just discovered that my passport will remain exactly 6 months tomorrow. God gave me today's date in short

Interview
Vo: good morning
Me: good morning sir.
Vo: do you have up to six months on this passport.
Me: yes sir. It will remain six months tomorrow.
Vo: where are you going in the US?
Me: I'm going to kennesaw state university for my Master's degree in chemistry. I got this offer in 2020 but due to covid lockdown I couldn't secure an appointment.
Vo: oh, I see.
Me: yes sir. In fact my assistantship was kept for me.
Vo: nodding in agreement.
Vo : why do you want to have this degree?
Me: I planned to join a multinational company here in Nigeria as a research and development Chemist, and this degree will put me in the best position to achieve that.
I'm currently eyeing Nestlé, OLAM, and Unilever.
Vo: where are you working presently?
Me: I'm working with Nestlé Nigeria on contract. I joined them pending the beginning of my program as I can't take up any permanent appointment until I get my Master's.
Vo: nodding in agreement.
Vo: have you travelled out before?
Me: No sir.
Vo: who is your sponsor?
Me : named him.
Vo: what does he do?
Me: he holds the position of vice president at OLAM international. So he controls all their manufacturing activities in Nigeria.
Vo: didn't get OLAM so I spelt for him.
Vo: why does he want to sponsor you?
Me: he was the one that advised me to go for my Master's abroad to gain a better research knowledge and international exposure before I join their company as R&grin Chemist. He promised to render all the necessary support and he's doing just that. In fact he gave me the money last year before I realized I couldn't go.
Vo: the money is in your account?
Me: No sir. In his account.
Vo: do you have his statement?
Me: yes I do. Gave him.
While he collected it to check, I quickly added.. that's just his transactional account, not his salary account.
Me: the assistantship I have has covered full tuition and living expenses, he's just covering the miscellaneous expenses.
Vo: checked the i20 again, then drop the account statement and then he said something I didn't hear and gave me the white paper.
Me: still standing at his front like I was in another world.
Vo: you are free to go.

Hallelujah!
The security there said it was the longest interview.

I appreciate everyone on this thread. Thanks so much!

Spence, thanks so much for words of wisdom.

Pepe my brother, I love you so much.

Glory be to God!

Good day guys, Please I need advice from the gurus. I was denied visa in January for Spring admission. My school is having the spring semester fully online. I enrolled and started my program online for the spring. Paid a deposit for my tuition. Now I'm planning to reapply for visa to go continue my program in in-person. Does the 120 days to resumption before applying for visa apply to my case. Or can I apply anytime since I'm already a student of the school? Please I need advice. Thanks
You will be given an updated i-20. The 120days rule to issue visa apply. Online program doesn't require i-20 or VISA. Check your i-20 to get a clearer info about when to visit the embassy within the 120days. There is Program start & end dates and earliest dates to resume on i-20.

I already told them to change that amount on the i-20 , they already did. So each school has their own way of doing their things, but I just tried to explain to them and they corrected it within minutes and sent a new i-20 showing the same amount as the one on the COA.
Ok, that's nice.

Please can we all contribute to this please I think someone had something similar to this last two years on this thread , I received my i-20 for the fall semester yesterday and this was what I was seeing in the i-20, at the left hand side tuition fees and living expenses altogether is $22,300 , at the right hand side of the i-20 students funding for 9 months, personal funds $0 , funds coming from the school $0, Father $55,000 because father was used as the sponsor. This actually means that the school calculated the SOA of my father and then put $55,000 there, please aren't you seeing this as a problem and that this might confuse the VO, since the amount in both sides are different? Please anyone with similar experience or that have idea of what I am talking about can contribute. Oga @fairheart and Co please what is your take on this. Screenshot photo below to see what I'm saying.
Since your sponsor amount is way more than the COA you should be fine. Ensure your SOA reads this total amount in your interview.
