SportsNigeria Defeats Host (Niger) 2 - 0 || 2015 African U-17 CAF Tourney by pendy79(op): 10:59pm On Feb 15, 2015
WORLD champions, Golden Eaglets of Nigeria, Sunday defeated hosts, Niger Republic 2-0 in Niamey, to set the tone for a victorious outing at the 2015 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Under-17 Championship.

The opening game of the competition, watched by a mammoth crowd of home supporters and a sprinkling of Nigerians, saw the Golden Eaglets opening their account in the 18th minute through Victor Osimhen, while Captain Kelechi Nwakali’s beautiful free-kick from outside the box silenced the home fans in an entertaining opener at the Stade Seyni Kountche in Niamey.

The hosts went closer with Souradjou Alhassane just before the break but could not test Nigeria’s goalkeeper Akpan Udoh.

In the second half, the Nigeriens rallied to try and get back in the game with striker Ibrahim Issoufou the main threat but the Eaglets were resolute at the back and held on to collect maximum points and pile pressure on the debutant hosts, who now face a ‘must-win’ clash against Zambia in their second Group A fixture.

The opening match was preceded by a colourful ceremony depicting Niger’s history, culture and song and traditions. It was attended by the host republican president, Mahamadou Issoufou, CAF president, Issa Hayatou, Executive Committee of CAF and members of the Organizing Committee of the championship.

Oaikhinan Isibor Aigbe and Co, Lawyers to Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, have written to popular blogger, Linda Ikeji over a publication described as “defamatory” to the person of the presidential aide.

The petition titled “Publication Of Defamatory Material By Linda Ikeji” was made available to DAILY POST Thursday morning.

Isibor, a Barrister and Solictor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, was referring to a publication on Monday, February 9, 2015 where the Spokesman was reportedly booed out of a platform while addressing some Nigerians, and insisting that Gen. Buhari, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress was not electable. In the video, Okupe was abruptly interrupted with the shout of APC.

Reacting to the report, Okupe’s lawyers said “the article contained a video which has been taken out in a manner designed to cause our client embarrassment. humiliation and lowering of his assessment and standing in the eyes of his employers and the general public.”

The Chamber, therefore, demanded the immediate removal of the “very misleading post” within 48 hours and as well an apologise to Dr, Okupe.

However, a check on Linda Ikeji’s blog shows she has removed the post. But she is yet to write an apology as demanded by the letter.

An aide in the office of the presidential aide told DAILY POST that despite the post’s retraction, nothing short of apology will make Dr Okupe drop the matter.

PoliticsPolice Free Power-drunk Cop, Frame Tortured Couple by pendy79(op): 3:46pm On Feb 12, 2015
The power-drunk cop who tortured a couple in the Ikoyi area of Lagos State, Dada Ogunsanya, has been freed by the police.

However, one of the victims of the torture, Ejeh Smith, is currently being detained in the Ikoyi Police Division.

PUNCH Metro gathered on Wednesday that the police at the Ikoyi division were mounting pressure on him to admit that he was a criminal.

He was initially arrested by the Lion Building Police Division for allegedly receiving stolen diesel. The Ikoyi division heard about the case after Ejeh had been granted bail, but nevertheless rearrested and brought him before some selected journalists.

The action, it was learnt, was targeted at rubbishing earlier reports indicting Ogunsanya and the then Ikoyi Divisional Police Officer, Aisha Haruna.

Our correspondent had reported in December, 2014 that Ogunsanya, a corporal attached to the Ikoyi division stopped a cab conveying Ejeh and his wife, Grace, home.

The policeman, who was part of a patrol team, was said to have shone his torch on the passengers, who protested that the inner lights of the cab should have sufficed.

Angry Ogunsanya was said to have used his rifle to hit Ejeh in the eye and stepped on Grace’s stomach.

The DPO, Haruna, was alleged to have deleted Grace’s recording of the incident.

The matter was still ongoing, when PUNCH Metro learnt on Wednesday that Ogunsanya had been released, while Ejeh had been detained for another matter.

Ejeh’s wife, Grace, said her husband was arrested for allegedly receiving a stolen keg of diesel.

She said, “Last week, I returned from work and I saw a 25-litre keg of diesel in the house. My husband said a security man in the next compound wanted to sell it to him. He explained that the security man said he did not have money on him.

“My husband told the man that he would help him sell the fuel, as he had no use of the product.”

It was gathered that the security man had stolen the fuel from his employer, which was later detected through a CCTV camera.

Policemen from the Lion Building division were said to have arrested Smith after the suspect mentioned his name.

Grace said the police in the Lion Building granted bail to her husband, but as Ejeh was going home, policemen from the Ikoyi Division surfaced and said the complainant had demanded that the matter be transferred to the division.

It was gathered that the DPO of Ikoyi division at the time of the torture, Aisha Haruna, is now the DPO of the Lion Building division.

Grace said, “After we paid N15, 000 for Smith’s bail in the Lion Building division, the police said he should be taken to the Ikoyi Police Division, that the owner of the case wanted it transferred there.

“The lawyer representing the complainant wanted to withdraw the case, but the police said the case should go on.

“The police then asked my husband to accept that he is a criminal, so that they can rubbish whatever we said they did to us. They also invited some journalists to interview him.”

It was gathered that Ogunsanya, who was back at the Ikoyi division, had been insisting on Ejeh’s arraignment in court.

But the Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Kenneth Nwosu, said the police did not frame the couple.

He, however, admitted that Ogunsanya had been released, saying his trial had ended.

He said, “Dada Ogunsanya’s trial has ended and his rank was reduced from corporal to constable.

“Smith was arrested by his community for receiving stolen goods and was brought to the Ikoyi Police Division for investigations before charging the matter to court.

“Nobody organised a press conference on his arrest. Some journalists heard about his arrest and called me that they would like to interview him and I cannot stop them.”

It is clear that the Presidency is unhappy about the affinity of the Labour Congress with the Opposition and hence wants to impose their stooge on the Union Leadership like they did with the Nigeria's Governors Forum to kill dissident views and presumed opposition to Government's waywardness and bankruptcy of the Commonwealth of the Nation.

THE 11th National Delegates Conference of the Nigeria Labour Congress was on Thursday abruptly disrupted as aggrieved parties hijack, and smashed ballot boxes being used to elect incoming leaders of the organisation, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The International Conference Centre’s venue of the conference was thrown into confusion as delegates ran for dear lives after some aggrieved contestants and their supports suddenly became violent, hijacking and destroying ballot boxes even while voting was still underway.

The Conference, which began Tuesday, was organised to elect new leaders for the country’s central labour union following the expiration of tenure of the current executives.

It is not clear yet how the event, which had been peaceful since it began suddenly descended into crisis, but the election for the President of the Union had created tension among delegates and split them along partisan lines.

After the disruption, the police took over the venue and delegates were sent away, ostensibly to protect the facility from being vandalised.

Labour leaders have now reconvened at the NLC headquarters in the Central Business District of Abuja for a meeting, aimed at resolving the logjam.

Three candidates had put themselves forward to be elected as President Waheed Omar’s successor.

They are the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, Joe Ajaero; the National President of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, Igwe Achese; and National President of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria Ayuba Wabba.

For the three deputy president positions, the Non Academic Staff Union is putting forward its General Secretary, Peter Adeyemi, while the General Secretary, National Union of Textiles, Issa Aremu, is contesting unopposed, along with the National President, Nigeria Civil Service Union, Kiri Mohammed.

PoliticsRivers Guber: Tension As Police Stop APC Rally In Okrika by pendy79(op): 1:18pm On Feb 12, 2015
Tension heightened in Okrika, Rivers State yesterday as the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Chief Dakuku Peterside was allegedly told not to hold a rally today. The exercise had been postponed thrice due to security concern.

This is even as the First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan arrived in Okrika, her hometown yesterday. There was a security meeting between APC leaders and the police yesterday.

Briefing journalists yesterday in Port Harcourt, the Campaign Manager of Dakuku Peterside Campaign Organisation in Okrika, Tamuno Williams, stated that the inability of the police to provide security for their members in Okrika had led to the postponement of the rally thrice. Williams said: “We could not hold the first rally on Saturday, January 24, because unknown hoodlums blew up our podium and sound systems with dynamite. Cars were burnt and our canopies and chairs destroyed. The police then asked us to reschedule the rally for Tuesday, February 3. Again, it was postponed on the instructions of the police.”

According to him, the leadership of the party was surprised when the representatives of the commissioner of police said the rally had to be postponed indefinitely.

“We were shocked. It is clear to us that the APC cannot hold a rally in Okrika when the President’s wife is in town. We are also indigenes of Okrika”.

He accused the police of being partisan, stressing that the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Nyesom Wike, was addressing a rally at Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, with heavy presence of armed security, while they were holding the meeting with the security chiefs at the state police command.

“If members and supporters of the APC cannot hold rallies in Okrika, how are we sure they will be allowed to freely cast their votes on the day of the election? If the police cannot allow the APC to hold its rally at Okrika for security reasons, how are we sure the police can protect those who will vote for the APC at the polls?”, he asked.

They can't even put up a united front on the reason for poll shift. The NSA and Military chiefs are saying one thing, Fani Kayode and the Party are singing a different hymn.

PoliticsBoko Haram Not Main Cause Of Poll Shift - Fani Kayode by pendy79(op): 7:31pm On Feb 11, 2015
The Director of Media and Publicity of the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has debunked views being canvassed by the international media that the elections were postponed principally because of Boko Haram insurgency in the northeast zone of Nigeria.

Fani-Kayode said the decision to postpone the elections never emanated from the government of President Goodluck Jonathan as being speculated, but from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) owing to the problem of logistics it encountered.
He made this known during his brief one-on-one interview session with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Africa Service.
Fani-Kayode said INEC mainly agreed to shift the dates for the scheduled Nigeria’s general election mainly because many eligible voters in Nigeria were yet to get their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs).

He stressed that the percentage of those who were yet to get the cards was still high as at the time the dates of the elections were shifted.
He said INEC had announced that about 34 percent of eligible voters in Nigeria were yet to get the cards, stressing that the scheduled general election could not have been allowed to go on with a high percentage of Nigerians being disenfranchised.

PoliticsFrom Stock Market To Weddings, Nigeria Polls Shift Wreaks Havoc by pendy79(op): 7:20pm On Feb 11, 2015
The band was booked, invitations had been sent to 500 guests and two caterers hired to prepare a range of local specialities, including jollof rice and pounded yam.

Agnes Adedipe, a 28-year-old resident of Nigeria’s largest city Lagos, thought her March 28 wedding was coming together: then national elections were postponed to the same date.

“I am confused, angry and completely lost,” she told AFP.

Nigeria’s widely-criticised decision at the weekend to postpone the polls by six weeks because of violence by Islamist group Boko Haram has reverberated around the country.

The political uncertainty has further hurt an economy already hit by low global oil prices and led to warnings of a looming constitutional crisis.

But that offered little comfort to Adedipe, who sobbed as she contemplated reorganising her wedding in just six weeks.

Election day in Nigeria — initially scheduled for February 14 — is a public holiday and movement is restricted because of heightened tension and the prospect of unrest.

In short, it’s not an ideal day for a 500-person wedding and Adedipe will be forced to reschedule.

“This postponement has ruined my marriage plan,” she said.

Nation on standby

The National Security Agency (NSA) pushed for the vote delay on grounds that all available military personnel were deploying to the northeast to fight Boko Haram insurgents and would not be able to provide security on polling day.

Electoral commission chairman Attahiru Jega insisted he was ready for February 14 but ultimately yielded to the NSA guidance, leading to claims that he caved in to ruling party pressure.

President Goodluck Jonathan was facing a tough challenge from former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, prompting claims that Jonathan loyalists desperately wanted more time to revive his campaign.

Nigeria’s economy, the largest in Africa and driven by crude exports, has been hammered by the slide in global oil prices and the election delay has only made things worse.

The naira currency hit a record low on Wednesday (203.1 against the US dollar) leading to concern that an extended period of political limbo will have wider consequences.

Razia Khan, head of Africa research at Standard Chartered, warned of “additional uncertainty” caused by the campaign extension and said needed policy adjustments to cope with falling oil prices could be delayed.

The stock market has also been depressed by a political environment “riddled with uncertainty and negativity”, added Gabriel Ilori Akinyemi, managing director of Valmon Securities in Lagos.

Constitutional crisis? –

Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) party has fiercely criticised the decision to delay the vote, highlighting clear inconsistencies in the concerns expressed by the NSA.

Last month, the agency’s main issue was difficulty in distributing voter cards, while last week security concerns had become the new focus.

The Boko Haram conflict has been raging for six years and while voting was always going to be complicated in the group’s northeastern stronghold, the military had previously said nothing about problems securing polling stations nationwide.

The APC said that “any further postponement can only lead to a constitutional crisis” and recalled the damage done by a similar crisis following 1993 polls.

Nigerians had hoped that vote, which the popular business tycoon Moshood Abiola was on track to win, would end a long period of devastating military rule.

Military ruler Ibrahim Babangida had other ideas and cancelled the ballot counting, which sparked months of uncertainty that ultimately saw brutal army general Sani Abacha take power for four years.

Lagos-based human rights lawyer Jiti Ogunye said Saturday’s postponement showed Nigerians that the supposedly independent election body could be “forced by the state to cow-tow and subvert the democratic will of the citizenry”.

He voiced concern that public confidence in elections would be further undermined as March 28 approaches.

As she tries to salvage her wedding plans, Adedipe may take comfort in the fact that her fiance is also familiar with political uncertainty, constitutional chaos and deadly unrest.

Her husband-to-be is currently based in Ukraine.

See an example of the owner of this forum who stickied what he thinks is an Anti-Buhari article on the home page of the Politics section thinking he is doing a disservice to the character of Buhari, he foolishly thinks Nigerians are looking out for propaganda,

Nigerians in their Millions are feeling the pains of the GEJ's failure in Leadership and they are kicking him out, no amount of propanganda against Buhari can stop it, Not even inconsequential Nairaland.

Chiamanda is in US but yet feels the uselessness of the Government in Nigeria and some bastards are telling us he is the best thing after Agege bread to have happened to Nigeria.

Buhari needs no campaign really, the reality of the times in Nigeria today is the driving force behind him

I think the direction the country need to go is clear to all that are not blinded by ethnic and religious bigotry and daft ignorant apologists of Government.

My Choice and mind is clear, The Nigeria I dream is a NIGERIA ruled with the fear of God and where corruption is beaten to the barest minimum.
We can't continue the path of infamy for another 4years, 6years of cluelessness and willful wickedness and nonchalant attitude to the cry and pains of the citizenry is enough reason to boot out the useless government of GEJ.

You can't wait for election to fight an insurgency you watered and allowed to fetter for years all because YOU SEE IN THE INSURGENCY AN OPENING TO SIPHON PUBLIC FUNDS AND SEEK POLITICAL COVERAGE FOR YOUR EVIL PLANS.

God will heal the land.

Going into the elections, Nigerians are deeply divided along tribal, ethnic and religious lines. More than any other ruler in the chequered history of Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan has worked very hard to amplify the differences among Nigerians. He had done tremendously to make us realise that we are not of the same tribe, tongue or religion. He had invested handsomely in reifying the divisive tendencies that undergird the Nigerian nationhood such that the coming elections are coming with fearful promises of deepening the schisms, the divides and possibly leading to the disintegration of the country. A sneak preview into the embarrassing campaign of President Jonathan and his PDP reveals this scenario. When Nigerians feel that a president that should leverage on whatever are the achievements he wrought with a six years unprecedented oil windfall (the highest in the history of the country) to advertise his competence for additional tenure, all they get are mudslinging, character assassination, muck raking, blackmail, abuses, fabrication of lies and incendiary hate propaganda against their main challenger, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari.

But then, elections, for ruling parties, are about giving accounts of stewardship and tapping on that to seek for elongation. For a ruling party, election time is time for testimony of the good things it had done and the need to trust it with more time to do more. But Nigerians are not getting that from Jonathan and the PDP as they strive so desperately to parry our attention from the most critical question of how well they have managed our affairs in the last six years. Where we would have been told (even as we don’t experience it) how our lives had been improved by the government, we are fed with tons and tons of hugely fabricated lies and insidious propaganda against just one man.

When Nigerians expect fruitful results from the providential oil windfall that has blessed the six years of Jonathan’s administration, how he will work to improve the pallid state of the country under his insipid watch, all they get are unflagging abuses, character assassination and woeful resort to throwing brickbats at their main opponent. Most importantly, Jonathan seems to have invested so much in driving knives of hate and intolerance among the country’s Christians and Muslims, among Southerners and Northerners and thereby precipitating a conflagration among Nigerians, having realized that the probabilities of his retaining power is practically gone.

But there is no escaping the sordid underpinnings of the Jonathan presidency however it tries to divert our attention. Recently, Charles Soludo, the former Governor of the Central Bank made a startling revelation that a huge N30 trillion has been stolen from the country’s treasury during Jonathan’s tenure. This only followed the yet to be resolved revelation by Soludo’s successor as CBN Governor, Emir Lamido Sanusi that $20 billion was diverted from the country’s treasury and also the bombshell from former President Obasanjo that the foreign reserve he built up in his eight years has been completely depleted. These are just infinitesimal bits of the hefty funds stolen during this administration. In the face of these hair-raising revelations by those that should know, Nigerians are getting poorer to the extent that the country is on the verge of becoming the country with the highest number of poor people in the world, infrastructure continue to decay, standard of life continues to plummet, life expectancy is on such a free fall that the respected Economist Magazine wrote that Nigerians die eight years younger than their counterparts in poorer Ghana! Public power supply has dimmed considerably from where Jonathan met it despite the fact that billions of dollars have been poured into it, our health sector survives as an expansive mortuary as the death rate continues to expand, and hunger, disease and want ravage millions of Nigerians to no end.

Also, corruption and stealing of public resources have become integral parts of government. Jonathan insists that stealing is not corruption and maintains that he will not send corrupt people to jail. This has been the well exploited license that has opened the huge resources of the country to free pillaging as the Jonathan regime feels satisfied celebrating the corrupt beneficiaries of its quaint predilection to Byzantine corruption as the hallowed fruits of his paradoxical economic growth. Nigeria under Jonathan is bankrupt today as a dip in oil earnings has wrecked the states and ensured that states and even the federal government owe workers’ salaries for several months. Today, and despite the gloating of a booming economy, Nigerians are hungry, angry, frustrated, demeaned, agitated and edgy, as Jonathan presents himself for re-election.

In its latest editorial dedicated to the coming general election, The Economist has this to say of the Jonathan government;

“Start with Mr Jonathan, whose People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has run the country since 1999 and who stumbled into the presidency on the death of his predecessor in 2010. The PDP’s reign has been a sorry one. Mr Jonathan has shown little willingness to tackle endemic corruption. When the governor of the central bank reported that $20 billion had been stolen, his reward was to be sacked.

“Worse, on Mr Jonathan’s watch much of the north of the country has been in flames. About 18,000 people have died in political violence in recent years, thousands of them in January in several brutal attacks by Boko Haram, a jihadist group that claims to have established its ‘caliphate’ in territory as large as Belgium. Another 1.5m people have fled their homes. The insurgency is far from Mr Jonathan’s southern political heartland and afflicts people more likely to vote for the opposition. He has shown little enthusiasm for tackling it, and even less competence. Quick to offer condolences to France after the attack on Charlie Hedbo, Mr Jonathan waited almost two weeks before speaking up about a Boko Haram attack that killed hundreds, perhaps thousands, of his compatriots.”

This is just a summation of the damning international opinion on the Jonathan government, which goes like this;

Influential Newspaper, New York Times, writes, “Mr Jonathan, who leads a corrupt government that has little credibility.”

Britain’s TV station Sky News thinks, “President Jonathan is at best naive, at worst manipulative.”

Well respected financial publication, The Economist, says ,“Jonathan’s government incompetent, callous and very corrupt”.

British Newspaper, The UK Guardian, writes on the president’s corruption record, “Jonathan’s record on corruption is a disgrace”.

Former United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, describes the Jonathan government, saying, “Nigeria under Jonathan, squandered oil wealth, and breeds corruption.”

Former US presidential candidate and Senator, John McCain speaking on the Chibok girls said, “We shouldn’t have waited for a practically non-existent government to give us the go-ahead before mounting a humanitarian effort to rescue those girls”.

According to the US State Department, “Massive, Widespread and Pervasive corruption affecting all levels of government under President Jonathan”.

The local opinion is more damning and forms the preface for the presidential election. This is the kind of indicting scenario Jonathan and his PDP are trying desperately to run away from and what better way to do that than to go personal and divert discourse and election campaigns to banalities with liberties to sell lies and falsehood and hoodwink unsuspecting and ill exposed citizens? What better way than to indulge in infantile trading of lies, mischief and inanities as a campaign manifesto? For this dirty job, PDP and Jonathan have gathered a hefty cache of jobbers when they should have gathered economic, political and governance experts to drive their campaign. With the huge resources salted from the treasury, the PDP has bought off the entire media; print, electronic and online with a singular mission to engage in lies, blackmail, forgeries, haul dirt at their presumed nemesis, Gen. Buhari and these are over working themselves to earn their illicit commission. Sadly for them, the more they engage in these dirty campaigns, the more they mobilise Nigerians on the great need to rusticate them on 28 March.

A sample: A few days ago, AIT, a station committed irrevocably to the corrupt interests of the PDP, did a very dangerous documentary with the sole purpose of generating lies and evil propaganda to tarnish the image of Buhari. The documentary was meant to put a final seal on Buhari and for this, AIT smiled to the bank. After repeatedly airing this one hour documentary for some days, AIT opened an online poll to gauge how well its hate mission has sunk with Nigerians. Lo and behold, Buhari so roundly trounced Jonathan in the poll such that 79 per cent voted Buhari while a paltry 19 per cent voted Jonathan! Embarrassed and roundly humiliated at the failure of its mercenary job, AIT pulled down the poll, making a face saving claim that some people hacked into its site!

What is becoming so obvious to the PDP and Jonathan presidency is that the more they sow lies and falsehood to arrest the soaring Buhari candidacy, the more Nigerians get mobilised around him as a panacea to the continued decay and rot that have pockmarked PDP’s years in power. As it stands today, the coming election has been called for Buhari by Nigerians that refuse to buy PDP’s jaded market of mudslinging as a campaign tactics. The expectation is that given the rancour and division the PDP has slyly sold in Nigeria, a Buhari presidency should start working on a unitive template to weave Nigerians from every tribe and religion together again, heal the fractures that have been inflicted on the Nigerian state and lead the country to recovery from the blisters of the present. What we have currently is a fruit of total failure of leadership as exemplified by Jonathan’s six years of failed leadership. It behoves the coming leadership to hit the ground running as soon as it is elected and mop up the strains the PDP has brought to bear on the structures and people of the country.
